Letter from the Editor

Hello All, And a very warm welcome to this festive edition of the WAC on Track. As the temperature drops and the Christmas markets start springing up, it really is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! With the scent of oranges and cinnamon and, of course, good old Glßhwein hanging in the air, it’s hard not to get just a little bit excited. Uster on Ice will be up and running again from 7th December in the Stadtpark, and not to be outdone by all of this festive activity, there is plenty of seasonal entertainment at the WAC. Parties, market trips, movie night - all of which you can find the details of right here in this issue. Many, many thanks once again to all those who have contributed, and wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and a truly fabulous new year‌ See you all again in February Tamsin

President’s Note Philippa Milz Dear WAC Members, December is here and Christmas has been in full swing in all the shops since early November, have you had enough already? I hope not because we have quite a few Christmas events going on at the WAC to get you in a festive mood. First off is a trip to the Zurich Hauptbahnhof Christmas markets for a glühwein or 2 before moving on to watch Last Christmas at the rd cinema on Tuesday 3 December at 7pm. If that’s not enough then on Thursday 5

th

December, we have

a Christmas movie night at the WAC with pizza and drinks for only 10chf. The film showing is The Man Who Invented Christmas, sign up on the WAC noticeboard if you want to join. A week later we have the now traditional Christmas Jumper party held this year on th Thursday 12 December from 7.30pm at the WAC. Blow the cobwebs off your best Christmas themed outfit or throw a bit of tinsel round your neck and add some bauble earrings, more is more in this case. Bring a dish to share, a bottle of whatever you fancy and most importantly a Secret Santa gift to fight over later in the evening! What will the most sought after presents be this year? 4

Last but not least we have the return of the WAC Christmas party on Sunday 15

th

December

2-5pm. There will be carols, the usual games and crafts, an opportunity to buy some gifts for your loved ones and the all-important visit from Santa with the option to have a professional photo taken with him for 10chf. Even better this year there’s no need to bring any food as we will provide hotdogs, mince pies and popcorn plus soft drinks (Glühwein and Prosecco will also be available to buy). Unfortunately, we say goodbye this month to Carol our Office Manager. Carol has been an active member of the WAC for many years especially when her children were younger and was also President before taking on the Office Manager role. She has been a quiet superhero toiling away in the background making sure the club is running efficiently and working closely with Ida our School Director. These are big shoes to fill and we will miss you immensely so Thank You for all your hard work over the last 5 years. Happily, she’s not leaving us completely having joined the school staff back in August teaching reading and writing on Wednesday afternoons. I am, however, pleased to announce that Helen Griffiths will take over as the new Office Manager. Helen has also been an active WAC member, albeit a few years ago, and started the school class now known as Explorers. Welcome to the family Helen and we all look forward to working with you in the coming months. I hope you enjoy the many fun activities we have on at the WAC this month and wish you a very peaceful Christmas and a smooth slide into the New Year. Philippa

LEARNING TREE COOPERATIVE SCHOOL It seems like we just returned from our Fall break and now the next holidays are here again. Time flies by so fast! We had a fun, busy year so far and we look forward to continuing our fun in 2020. I would like to take this special time to thank all the people who have been invaluable in their support. Thank you to my wonderful teaching team! Thank you to Carol who will no longer be working with me in the office but will still be in our team! Your hard work, dedication and support was greatly appreciated. I would also like to welcome Helen, who will be taking over for Carol. I look forward to working with you! I would like to thank our PTA team Clare, Denise and Hai. Clare and Denise, we have worked together now for years and I can always count on you. You are the best! A very special mention and thank you to Hai. I have worked with you for only one year but the amount of support I got from you is amazing. You were always ready to jump in, give us new ideas, volunteer and just be around when we needed you. The teachers, PTA and I will miss you! We wish you all the best. Please don’t forget that we close one week earlier than the Uster schools. Our holiday break is from December 14 to January 5. We will see you all again on the th week of the 6 of January! In the meantime, our best wishes for the holidays to everyone!

COM Corner – Farewell and Welcome Dear WAC members and Friends, After more than 5 years as Club Office Manager, I’ve decided it’s time for a change. I have absolutely loved my job in the office and I will miss it – but I’m very happy to be still at the WAC as Teacher, Reading and Writing. I’m also keen to focus on teaching and maybe take up a new hobby or two. I’d like to thank Ida for all her support, and also the teachers who are such a lovely group of people. I have also had the pleasure of working with fantastic volunteers. A special thank you to my Presidents – Clare, Ieva and Philippa, it’s been an absolute honor to work with you all. I’m very happy to be handing over to Helen, who will introduce herself in the next edition of the WAC on Track. I know she will do a great job and she’s looking forward to meeting you all over the coming weeks. There are lots of new things happening at the WAC next year. Just a sneak preview is in this bumper edition. The Little Scientists stem coding workshops, weekly courses and holiday camps look really exciting. There th st will be free trial workshops on January 25 and February 1 – contact Scilla at sroncallo@gmail.com if you’d like more information. Pilates will continue as well and we still have space for one or two more ladies. It’s now on Wednesday evenings from 7.45pm – so if you want to get toned abs in the New Year, this could be the class for you….. Wishing everyone a lovely Christmas and see you in 2020! Carol

Dinner Club at the WAC Back on the 1st November, The Dinner Club met for dinner in an unusual setting. We had dinner in a cosy and very warm Mongolian Yurt at Maharana Indian Restaurant in Hinwil. The Yurt was beautifully decorated all around and we were lucky to have it to ourselves. The Yurt was in the restaurant garden and we stepped outside and back into the main restaurant to where the buffet was. On offer were a wider range of very tasty Indian Curries, several meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, delicious samosas, pakoras, and some deserts as well. Maharana also offer a delivery service to Uster and the surrounding area, check out their website for further details. A chat with the friendly chef and owner revealed that he worked here in Uster in the Wagerenhof kitchens for many years, it's a small world... I would definitely recommend Maharana if you ever fancy some good Indian food. The buffet was super and eating in a Yurt made for a memorable experience. www.maharana.ch Walderstrasse 17 8340 Hinwil The next dinner club will be in the New Year when we shall try out the newly opened Nooch Asian Restaurant in Uster. Wishing you all a very merry Christmas with lots of mince pies, Christmas pudding, stollen, Panetone, Swiss Guetzlis and lots more delicious food! 15

The WAC Teenage Boys’ Club says goodbye

In 2011, my husband and I founded the the WAC Boys’ Club. In the meantime our big boys are all so busy and it has become more and more difficult to find activities suitable for everyone. Not only the boys but also us parents have found friends over the last 8 years. So we keep the memories, are happy to have seen them grow from little boys to young and independent young men and wish them all the best for their future.

Let’s hope somebody else will start a Boys’ Club for the younger ones soon. We can definitely recommend it regarding all the fun we had. Come on dads! Mirjam and Thomas
