Hello WAC Members, The feel of Fall is definitely in the air! The cows are coming down from their summer pastures, pumpkins are available everywhere you turn, we are almost to the Autumn break, and of course the Halloween party is being organized! If you are looking for Halloween costumes -- well, you may have noticed a VERY limited selection! I tend to re-use Fasnacht costumes for Halloween, but several places still exist to put a costume together for your kids. Many of the Swiss children’s clothing catalogs, such as Walzkidzz and Kidoh, and toy websites such as Pastorini, carry costumes you can order online. Search “verkleidung” or “kostüm.”

Treasurer Leong See Wong-Fischer aoisora@wongfischer.com

Bolli Stoff fabric shop in Winterthur has a large Fasnacht shop in the lower level where you can buy accessories such as hats, wigs, crazy glasses, witches’ brooms etc. year- round. (Steinberggasse 12/14, Winterthur)

And if you’d like to create something of your own but don’t have a sewing machine, try these ideas! Check out the amazing “Where the Wild Things Are” costume below...wow.

President’s Note

October 2012

Carol Conzelmann

Dear WAC friends, September has been a busy month at the WAC and a busy month for many of us, settling our children into their new routines and enjoying some late summer sun. The WAC participated in two marketing events during the past month. The first, a Welcome Day organized by the Uster local authority, was aimed at new residents who had the chance to see what clubs are available in the town. We had many people drop by who didn’t know about the WAC and we feel it’s good to increase awareness in the local community about the WAC and what we offer. The second event was an International Parenting Fair in Kilchberg. Aimed at the ex-pat community, there was lots of information about education options in the wider Zurich region. Thanks to Angie Menendez, our Marketing guru, who organized the materials for both events, and for the numerous helpers who gave their time voluntarily to man the stands: Jen, Heather, Bettina, Heike, Angie, Ida, Caryn, Sharon, Leong See and Sue. This was a real team effort between the WAC Board and our Teachers! Looking forward to the month ahead, the WAC is bursting with new activities and events! Newly established is our regular Ladies’ Night In. We’ve already had Italian and Mexican – the next one will be Asian themed. Everyone brings a dish and joins in an inexpensive and fun evening with both old and new friends – look out for more information on the notice board! Totally new this month is the WAC Dinner Club, set up by our WAC Secretary Susan Junod. The first evening out will be on Thursday October 25th at the Suan Long restaurant in Uster. It’s a great chance to escape from mom and cooking duties for an evening and enjoy some good company. Also coming up soon is our annual Halloween party. Heike Adler and Kalpana Jaiswal have found a great new location for our party so expect something new and exciting this year. The party will be on November 4th so make sure you keep your diary free! Happy reading, Carol

Ida Imbach

The teachers and I would like to thank the board for their support in another successful Parent Information Evening! The evening started off with a short talk by Carol, who introduced the board members present, Sue and Susan and talked about the WAC – the Club and all it has to offer. I was proud to introduce the wonderful, dedicated women who are the ‘backbone’ of the school –my teaching team – Mahjabeen, Heather, Sangeeta, Caryn, Kathy, Yvonne, Kate, Bettina, Stephanie, Sharon and Loredana. Another essential team member is Jennifer, our Club office manager and Lunch Club Coordinator. All these ladies are a very important part of the team that makes the school and the club a great place to be! A big thank you to all of you! Before going up to the classrooms, the floor was given to Jennifer, our Club office manager , who talked about the lunch club and different courses offered. She was followed by Kristina, who spoke about the PTA and the support it gives the school The PTA (Parents Teachers Association) has been instrumental in helping the school and the teachers in all their needs – from making playdough to organizing class photos. The PTA is comprised of the class reps headed by Kristina Linkomo. If there is anyone who is willing to help out as a class rep or just for a task, please contact either of us. Kristina - k.linkomo@yahoo.com or Ida - ltcschool@wac.ch. We then proceeded to the classrooms upstairs and later on finished the evening with some drinks and nibbles from Susan Junod – Thank you! For those of you who couldn’t make it, the teachers and I are always available to answer your questions. We are here for you and your children! I would like to thank all the families whose children come to our school. Your support is invaluable to us! So, we wish you a nice Fall Break and see you next month!

Please note that we will have another Usborne Book Sale on October 31!!!

Halloween The highlight of the season will be our Halloween party on November 4th. The special events team has been working for quite some weeks already to make this event as special and halloweenish as in the past. We will have a disco and are still looking for a DJ. If you are interested to be our Halloween DJ please send an email to kalpana.jaiswal@gmail.com.

We start monthly arts and crafts workshops for children 4+ starting in October. We will have a „Christmas baking“ class for children 4+ at the beginning of December.

LIBRARY NEWS

Dear WAC Members,

Judy Burckhardt

This last summer’s films continue to come out finally in DVD. For this month, the Library has acquired Men in Black #3, Dark Shadows, The Dictator, and Snow White & the Huntsman. In addition the Library has added Disney’s Robin Hood, Hercules, The Great Mouse Detective, and Geek Charming to its collection. For Halloween, I bought the Addam’s Family. And as requested, I have bought a few more classic Dr. Seuss cartoons: The Cat & the Hat and The Lorax. Also as requested, the Library has bought the hit adult book trilogy: 50 Shades of Gray. Because this series is expected to be in high demand, we will make these books only available on 4 week loan basis ---- like children’s books. Other new books for this month are The Demigod Diaries by Rick Riordan (author of the Percy Jackson series) and some more ABC Mystery books. Thank you always for your support of the WAC Library. Happy Halloween! J Judy

Interiors/Exteriors

Pamela Stankay

Hello WAC members! Interior/Exteriors is seeking volunteers to help with:   • Tea towel laundry (weekly) • Recycling (weekly) • Gardening – help either with knowledge or labor • Individuals who would be willing to help on one-off big projects, but don’t want to make a weekly commitment I would also like to ask for people with any special experience to step up and either write an article or consider hosting an evening class.  Personally I would be interested in woodworking basics and painting techniques.  I would also like information on how to help children understand handicaps.  What I have read so far says, “Give an age-appropriate answer.”  Some actual examples would be very helpful. If you can help with any of the above, please contact Pamela at: psherry@gmx.ch

To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries. A C Grayling, Financial Times (in a review of A History of Reading by Alberto Manguel)

Readers Gone WACky Alice Knöpfel

The Readers Gone WACky is a group of readers who meet on a regular basis to discuss a selected book. We have members from different countries with a wide range of tastes in reading - which makes our book selections and discussions challenging and interesting. When we discuss a book we not only discuss why or why not we like it, but also consider themes, metaphors, structures, comparisons to other works of literature and the author. In addition to these in-depth discussions, the book club always leaves time for socializing and snacking. Over our twelve year history we have seen many deep connections made on literary and other levels. Here are a few good reasons why you should join the Readers Gone WACky: Ø

You read things you otherwise wouldn’t read.

Ø Ø

You discuss great books that really need to be discussed. You get up to date on current literature.

Ø

You enrich your knowledge by reading or re-reading classics.

Ø

You expand your circle of friends to others who also enjoy intellectual stimulation.

Ø Ø

You get out in the evening at least once a month without spending a lot of money. You enjoy delicious snacks.

The next book club meetings are: October 24:

Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and The Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones

November 21:

Seating Arrangements by Maggie Shipstead.

Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings at 20:00 in the lounge. NEW MEMBERS WELCOME!!!! Please contact Alice Knöpfel (044 912 2326 aknoepfel@swissonline.ch) for more information.

Sharon’s Tips

This month my tips for moms and dads are short and sweet and hopefully very pratical.

When your kids start school, kindergarten even preschool, everything should be well labeled with your child’s name written everywhere possible. This Swiss company creates personlised stickers, with your child’s name, and you choose the colour, font and design. They have a promotion going on: 60 stickers for Fr. 10. http://www.stickerkid.com/ch/ Another favourite website, that I found particularly useful over the years, is www.starfall.com. This is for kids learning their letters, then learning to read, and then who are able to read. It’s very colourful and practical, and the main thing it is safe!! My kids still like going on there. Best wishes Sharon

Fly away ba!oons Amid a flurry of activity (and reluctance on the part of many of the kids) we watched the sky transform into a multi-colored canvas as Mickey Mouse led us in letting off over 200 helium filled balloons at the WAC BBQ this year. Each balloon was tagged with a members name on it just in case the balloon was found. We are happy to report that 2 balloons were found and reported back to us at the WAC. Thomas Junod's balloon made it all the way to Neu-Ulm in Germany and Sharon Warthmann's balloon went even a short distance further to Guenzburg.

October 2012 Just in Time…

The  weather  is  definitely  cooler  now  and  the  leaves  will  be  turning  gold  and  yellow  soon.  Autumn  color  and  autumn  smells   -‐  so  naturally,  pumpkins  come  to  mind.  Pumpkin  soup,  muffins,  bread  and  warm  pies  are  for  the  making. I  remember  my  very  first  WAC  Halloween.  For  1  Swiss  Franc,  we  could  buy  a  mini  recipe  booklet  with  wonderful  recipes:   Pumpkin  Recipes  at  your  fingerJps,  from  the  WAC.  It  even  came  with  a  lovely  orange  ribbon.  That  was  over  15  years  ago   and  yes,  I  sJll  have  that  booklet. Time  passes,  our  children  no  longer  go  to  playgroups  and  R&W  classes  nor  do  they  go  to  the  Girls  Club.  My  girls  are   teenagers.  So  places  like  Jucker  Farm  are   no  longer  interesJng.  Teenagers  have   other  needs  and  interests.  They  must   learn  to  interact  with  adults  in  all  kinds   of  se`ngs  for  example:  shopping,  asking   quesJons  and  negoJaJng  prices.   Where  to  go  to  find  tons  of  pumpkins  and   pracJce  speaking  English?   We  found  such  a  place:  Gartenpark-‐ Forch.  (www.gartenpark-‐forch.ch  ).   Teenagers  can  chat  easily  in  English  to   Esther  Weber  who  always  greets  you   with  a  smile,  7  days  a  week!  There  are   over  30  varieJes  of  pumpkins  housed  in   outdoor  tents.  As  expected  the  pumpkins   are  labeled  and  many  state  what  type  of   cooking  they  are  most  suited  for.   Pumpkins  will  be  available  to  the  end  of  Oct.  Gartenpark-‐Forch  is  located  on  HohrüJstrasse  4  in  Forch   Just  2  minutes  from  Neue  Forchstrasse  (The  “mini  Autobahn”  connecJng  Zollikon  to  Forch,  Egg,  Oetwil  ,Gossau  etc)  and  24   Min  from  the  WAC.   -‐-‐Nilsa  Stekler-‐Padilla

ULTIMATE PUMPKIN BREAD Author: Amy Wilson Prep time: 20 mins Cook time: 1 hour Total time: 1 hour 20 mins Serves: 14 The best pumpkin bread you’ll ever taste. Ingredients • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 tsp ground cloves • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tsp ground nutmeg • 1/2 tsp salt • 1 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp baking powder • 3 cups granulated sugar • 1 cup butter, really soft, half melted really • 3 large eggs • 1 16 oz can of pure pumpkin • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

4.

Method

1. 2. 3.

Preheat oven to 350˚F and spray two medium loaf pans with nonstick cooking spray. In a medium bowl, mix the flour, spices, salt, baking soda, and baking powder and set aside.
