Isn't this weather just amazing, we have had it for most of the Spring, the Summer break looms and the Dodds family, having comprehensively failed at renting any reasonable priced villa South of the Alps, my hubby & family are getting rather excited at the prospect of a camping holiday. Glamping being more my idea of a break!!I let's hope that the Icelandic volcano will not disturb our Summer. Speaking of Summer, I recommend that you check Sharon's tips ( p14) as well as Sima's ( p20). We have a introduction of our additional new chairpersons ( p6 & 7); the more sporty members of you might be interested by the coming Frauenlauf (p21) and the with the vast palette of interests and talents amongst our members, our front cover is a painting by our exhibiting artist Patricia Duckworth ( p.10). Hope to see you all next month at THE annual BBQ- June 25th. The Tug of War always is always such family fun, for those of you who like a nice gentle competition........ Happy Reading

INTRODUCTION TO WAC APPOINTEES Activities Board– Heike Adler Dear WAC members I would like to thank my predecessor Helen Mylius for having done such a great job in handling all the work involved with „Activities“. I hope I can continue to provide the same high quality Helen has shown in the past two years. For those of you who have not yet met me and my son in one of the playgroups I would like to introduce myself: My name is Heike, I am originally from Germany but have been living in the greater area of Zürich for the past 20 years – with two interruptions of 2 years each in Mexico and the US. My husband and I have three children, two girls (4 and 3 years old) and one boy (1 year). I have become a member of the WAC only a month ago. I had heard so many good things about the club that I not only decided to become a member but also to offer my help in covering „Activities“. I hope to meet many – if not all – of you at one of the special events or playgroups or one of the upcoming classes, like the Chinese dumpling cooking class with Sima. Heike

Playgroup Chairperson-Dana Levi-Hoffmann My name is Danna, I'm an Israeli (who grew up in the U.S.A) married to a Swiss. We have two handsome boys; Sky-Noah, 3, and Mika 2. When Sky-Noah was about 4 months old I heard about the WAC, and have been coming to the playgroups on and off ever since. When Sky was only 9 months old I found out I was pregnant again, and needless to say I've been busy raising these two rascals ever since. This year I finally felt fit again and decided to volunteer at the WAC. I started by taking over the Thursday playgroup with my friends Angie and Stacy, and soon after was offered the job of Playgroup Coordinator, which I happily took!

A bit more about myself: My husband and I met in Israel (the whole love at first tight sappy story) and after about 2 years of living there together, moved to Interlaken, where my husband was born and raised. Soon after moving there we got married, and I kept myself busy, working in a few souvenir shops by day, and joining my journalist husband on his newspaper jobs accompanying him as a photographer. I later found a good job as a graphic designer. My husband then found a great job at a radio station in Pfäffikon ZH, and at the same time I found out that I was finally pregnant. We moved to Pfäffikon 3 years ago, and we love it here! I look forward to holding fast to the awesome friendship i have made at WAC and creating many more in the future. Page 6

I am Swapna Patil. I moved to Uster 4 years ago from Mumbai with my Indian husband and my son Arnav who was 3. My daughter, Aryana, was born a year later after we arrived. We have been regulars to the WAC playgroups which we enjoy a lot and she has recently started the pre-school with some wonderful teachers to guide her. The WAC has given me some real good friends. "Hello,

my name is Natalie and along with Sejal & Swapna I have also been recruited as one of the new co-chairs for Special Events. I know the role will be a challenge and that there will be lots to live up to but I am looking forward to getting involved with the WAC and all it has to offer, as well getting to know other WAC members. We have lived in

Switzerland for 3 years now, having moved here from the London area. I have a 4 year old daughter, who will be starting local Kindergarten (and a WAC Explorer class!) in August, and a son who is about to turn 1. " Natalie

Art at the WAC I hope that all those visiting the WAC from the beginning of this June will enjoy looking at some of the great pieces of art adorning the walls! We are very lucky to be exhibiting the work of a fellow WAC member, Particia Duckworth. Patricia Duckworth is a 40 year old Swiss-Canadian living in Uster with her husband and two children. She is a professional architect, and has been painting for most of her adult life, exhibiting in Canada, India and Switzerland. She works with many media, including watercolor, pastel, oil and acrylic. Her subject has ranged from portraiture and the figurative, to landscapes both witnessed and imagined. Her current work is in acrylic, and focuses on capturing the dual nature of water; its power and dynamism when in motion, its silence and hypnotic draw when still. She has also been painting tulips, in an attempt to express their boldness, vibrancy and candor. Perhaps some of you will also be lucky enough to hang one of the pieces on your very own wall as all paintings can be purchased. The relevant information will be displayed right next to each piece. Patricia can also be commissioned privately to produce individual ideas and portraits. My thanks to Patricia for bringing so much colour to our WAC!

LIBRARY NEWS

Judy Burckhardt 2 Berenstain Bears DVD‟s --- if you liked the books,, they also made them into some short cartoons. Charlie & Lola Volume 1 --- cute BBC cartoon of a brother & sister.

Dear WAC Members, The newest movies added to the WAC DVD collection are a set of Read-Along Children‟s Book DVD‟s (made by Scholastic --- an American Educational Publisher). They are really cute with 56 famous children‟s books read out loud while subtitles light up as the word is read (like a Sing-Along DVD) and accompanied by animated pictures from the book. 0f the set, the “Harry, the Dirty Dog” DVD is my favorite, but the other 5 are also cute. Besides that, we have these DVD‟s newly added to the library: Mater‟s Tales --- short cartoons based on the Cars characters. Toy Story #3 --- The latest Toy Story cartoon movie 102 Dalmations --- Cru Ella D‟vil is back kidnapping puppies Cars --- our old Cars DVD broke from being watched so many times.

By the way, if you have a choice to borrow from us or another source, we would really appreciate if you borrowed from us: DVD rentals are the WAC Library‟s only source of income & so the only way we raise funds to buy new library DVD‟s & books. Our newest book in the book collection is Diary of a Wimpy Kid #5. It is the latest in the Wimpy Kid Series. And we also have The Princess Bride --- it is just as funny as the movie (but you do need to skip some of the boring parts in the book) and Fast Food Nation (the book that inspired a movie by the same title). Happy Summer Reading!  Judy

READERS GONE WACky

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

This novel is about a girl who, as a young teenager, discovers that she is genetically male. Cal tells his story as a memoir exploring the genetic history of his condition, the cultural influences on his family and the social difficulties with his gender. The family history begins in Asia Minor in 1922 when Cal‟s grandparents have an incestuous marriage on-board an American-bound immigration ship. Cal describes their struggle to integrate in Detroit during a time of major industrial and social change. Their son (Cal‟s father) marries his cousin and builds a successful family business. Despite having been identified as female as a baby, at 14 years old Cal is diagnosed medically as a boy. As Cal is culturally a girl, a gender specialist recommends surgery to become more female but Cal rejects this and runs away to live as a boy. This unusual book generated lively discussion amongst the WACky readers. We questioned whether Cal‟s relationship with a female friend was a heterosexual or samesex experiment. We found this difficult to categorise as adolescents often do not understand their own sexual motivations. We also discussed whether it is possible to have a mixed culture as stated by Cal‟s grandmother. It was proposed instead that one culture always tends to dominate and that root culture can often weaken over time. Speaking the local language was proposed as a key to cultural integration.

Page 12

Alice Knöpfel We further theorised about what we would do if we had a hermaphroditic child. As it would be difficult to live without a clear gender, we discussed how we might be forced to choose one for the child despite the potentially damaging consequences. Overall, the readers enjoyed this interesting book and felt it was thoroughly researched and well written. On June 15th the Readers Gone WACky will discuss The Good Women of China, Hidden Voices by Xinran. All meetings are at 20:00 in the WAC Lounge. NEW MEMBERS WELCOME! BUSINESS NEWS After January’s success, Dr. Giovanna has given again the First Aid Course at WAC on 14th of May. I also attended this course. That was really a very useful and helpful course; we learnt a lot of basic knowledge of First Aid for adult and children. There are many situations we may often meet in the daily life, but without this course I will just be in panic, won’t know what to do. It would be good for everyone to have this knowledge. Thanks to Dr. Giovanna, we hope this course can be run again in the future.

Sima Xie I worked a little bit with my business partner Eloenore and our “Boss” Heike. It’s a good team; I have felt the cooperation and support from them. Specially thanks to Angela and Andrea for the “hand by hand” teaching, and openly share their experience with us, giving us all the support we need! Great Thanks!

Angela will leave Switzerland and go back to London in August. It’s sad for me and WAC. We will lose a big help! The huge effort Angela has done for WAC has been written in the WAC’s On June we will have two events: Chinese history! We will miss you a lot and wish you all the dumpling course and our summer BBQ. best in London! Chinese dumpling course will be held on 14th of June from 7 pm to 9 pm at the clubhouse. 5 people have already signed up. We have 10 places for this time. Please hurry up to occupy a seat in Sima’s kitchen. WAC BBQ will be held on 25th of June from pm2 to pm7. There will be many interesting things for your small ones. It’s also time for the grown up to meet new friends and exchange information and life experience in Switzerland. It’s free for WAC members. Don’t forget to get a ticket at the WAC office between the 6th and 22nd June. Non-members are also welcome. Summer holiday is not far from us. Eleonore is planning the courses for next school year. If you have any good idea or suggestion, please let me or Eleonore know. We will try our best to make your wish happen. The ballet course is saved. Thanks to Ms. Robin’s daughter, she has agreed to overtake the ballet course. Our beautiful swans can again swim in the swan lake! Time runs so fast! The Schweizer Frauenlauf (National Swiss Ladies Race) takes place in Bern again this year on Sunday 19th June - it will be the 25th year of this wonderful event. Online registration is possible until 7th June, and there are several categories to enter from 5km walks to 10 km runs to 15 km Nordic walks.... the only requirement is that you are female! Why not take a look at the website - www.frauenlauf.ch - and maybe you might register yourself for a challenge and a great day out with several hundred thousand other like minded ladies. Please let me know (wightmans@gmail.com) if you are interested or have registered as we could all arrange to travel on the Bern train as a group - free public transport from anywhere in Switzerland is included in the price of registration. Hope to see you at the start line!!

Chinese Dumpling Course Tuesday June 14th from 7 to 9.00 pm Most of you are familiar with Chinese food, and a Chinese dumpling (Wanton) is almost a symbol of Chinese food. They are so yummy! Have you ever thought to make it by yourself? Too difficult? No material? Don't know how? As a Chinese let me tell you: "no, it's not difficult at all, you can get the material in Migros, Coop or other supermarkets. Just follow me and you will easily learn how to do it! On June 14th all of you are welcome to "Sima's Kitchen @ WAC", it will take you about half an hour to learn how to make a dumpling, the rest of the time you can try to make it by yourself, cook it, and of course enjoy your wonderful work! You will be surprised how easy, quick, variable and healthy it can be made! Are you ready? Let’s go! The application form is on the bullet board on the first floor. Please just sign up as soon as possible in order to get the first dumpling!

Green Fingers - or just a coffee? If you like garden centres, there is a lovely one called MEIER which used to be in Rüti but has now moved to an even larger site at Dürnten. It‟s very easy to find when you exit the motorway at Bubikon/Dürnten (direction Rapperswil) since it is right in front of you at the roundabout! It is the ideal place to go when you are looking for some new shrubs for your garden or balcony. And an even nicer place to go with your visiting Mum or parents if they have an interest in gardening. The choice is huge and the place is so spacious, it is very relaxing. Upstairs there is a restaurant where you can enjoy “Kaffee und Kuchen” or a lunchtime menu. They have a supervised childcare facility (Spielgarten) open on Wednesday afternoons and on Saturdays for your little ones.
