June 2012 Editor’s Note

Stacy Streuli

As we start the month of June, there are signs that summer is here! We’ve had some warm sunny days, the shops are filled with summer items and the smells of grill fires are in the air! Switzerland has a brief, but beautiful summer - so get out as much as possible and enjoy it! If you are new to CH and wondering where the best spots for grilling, swimming, and hiking are - I recommend www.MySwitzerland.com and http:// momstotszurich.blogspot.com. If you are looking for something local, bring some sausages along to Bruderhaus Tierpark in Winterthur. There are several grill areas and it’s all entirely free (except the ice cream that your kids will beg you for at the kiosk). It’s buggy-friendly as well. And of course “badi-saison” has begun! Sue Mailley-Smith is organizing “Fun in the Sun” - (see page 8), where mums and kids can meet for fun together at the lakeside pool in Uster. If you are an adventurous family, book in now for the unique holiday “Schlaf im Stroh” (Sleep in Straw) this summer, and be part of a hands-on farm adventure (details on page 9). And of course, at the end of June is our Annual WAC BBQ! Our organizers are doing a great job, but they need your help, so sign up for a task -- and be sure to pick up your tickets!! See the ad on page 3 for more info. And finally, I wish you a wonderful June and plenty of sun and fun times. See you at the BBQ. Stacy

Stephanie Weber

Dear WAC members, With summer just around the corner, I was reminded on a recent weekend what a beautiful, almost magical, place Switzerland is to live and raise kids. We, like many families, spend our Sundays together exploring the wonderful things Switzerland has to offer. On a recent weekend we visited Atzmännig in Goldingen, a playground in the Alps with a very long rutschbahn that dares you to ride it. Numerous coin-operated rides dot the landscape and there are the ubiquitous goats and other farm animals tame enough to feed by hand. Everyone in the family – from a two-year old enjoying a baby swing to a father cheerfully riding down a toboggan with an older daughter –had fun. I miss home less every time I discover a wonderful place like this. Do you have a favorite place in Switzerland that you like to visit when the weather gets warmer? We would love to hear where you enjoy spending warmer days. Please share your responses with Stacy, our wonderful WAC Editor at stacystreuli@gmail.com, so we can all learn of more places we’ve never been. The beginning of summer also means the WAC BBQ is just around the corner. This will be the first WAC BBQ my family has had the opportunity to attend and we are looking forward to joining friends to celebrate the WAC’s 15th anniversary. I have had the honor of working on the WAC Board of Directors only for a short time now, but long enough to see what goes into making this event a success and a yearly highlight for WAC families. Games, prizes, and good food are just a few notable parts of the event but what really makes this a special time for everyone is the camaraderie we share from being a part of such a great community. There are many specific opportunities for volunteering – including helping prepare and serve food, and running games for the kids. Please email me at st_hayes@yahoo.com if you would be willing to help. See you on the 30th of June! Sincerely, Stephanie

Summer is almost here! One school year is ending but another is just around the corner! The enrollments for the school year 2012-2013 have started. Please contact your child’s teacher or the office if you have not yet received your forms. Remember, we have a ‘first come- first served’ policy so please submit your forms as early as possible. We have added a new class which is ESL4 (English as a second language level 4) and we have split our Reading & writing Class V/ VI into two separate classes. If you have any questions or problems with scheduling the classes, please let us know and we will try to help you as much as we can. In the meantime, enjoy the poems written by our Reading & Writing IV class and the rest of the school year!!

Sharon’s Tips

With the summer holidays just around the corner, it’s time for the famous Uster Ferienplausch (Holiday Fun) once again. Every summer the city of Uster offers a vacation programme for kids 3 years old and up, at very

reasonable prices. Whilst many towns offer some kind of vacation programme, Uster has one of the best, with a huge variety of courses for every kid’s (and mom’s) taste. It is recommended you book early, as the really cool courses are filled very quickly. The courses come online at www.ferienplausch-uster.ch in the wee hours of Friday morning 7th June, at 00h00 to be exact. Once the courses are online, they may also be reserved. Every year I get wiser, and more clued up about the “seriousness” of this booking-business. Last year it seems that hundreds of very eager moms burned the midnight oil, and at 1 minute after midnight when the Ferienplausch courses came online, they were already frantically booking courses for their kids. I was oblivious to the frenzy as I had my beauty sleep, but I did especially wake up at 5.30AM, thinking I would beat the crowds. Ha ha, little did I know! Many of the very cool courses were either already booked up, or only had 1or 2 spaces left, or the best dates were already gone. So there I was, all sleepy-eyed, trying to go from 0 – 100 in 5 seconds. We did eventually book some wonderful courses that my girls absolutely RAVED about; just not all of them would have been my first choice, or were on ideal dates. Quite obviously, you do not need to join the madness. You will always find some enjoyable class or outing still available. But half the fun seems to be joining the insanity of the whole booking process. J As the clock strikes midnight on Thursday 6th June, your carriage won’t turn into a pumpkin, but you will make your child very, very happy this summer, either going to feed the elephants at the zoo, or learning some magic tricks from a magician, or doing a pottery class, or taking a tour of the fire department …. the list is endless. Have fun!

Fun in the Sun! In June and July, WAC members will be meeting up every Tuesday afternoon from 12 - 3pm at the Strandbad Niederuster. This is a lovely 'Badi' on the banks of the Greifensee, with a great play area for children, a splash

pool, 2 large pools, the lake itself and a cafe. There are

toilets, showers and changing facilities and an entry fee of 4 CHF just for adults.

Come and join us with a picnic lunch and a blanket, or just for a play and a splash around

- whatever you and your children feel like doing! Look out for the WAC flag to find us and have some fun. Our first meet up will be Tuesday, June 5th, from 12 - 3pm.  Join us any time throughout the afternoon. Seeweg 5, 8610 Uster

For more information about these meet ups, please call Sue Mailley-Smith on 078 624 3903, or send an email to susanmailleysmith@yahoo.co.uk.

Please note, this meet up will be cancelled in the event of bad weather! We look forward to seeing you there.

Girl’s Club Jana Parkin

As you can see the girls had a great time this past month learning some new hair styles! While they were untangling, smoothing, braiding and twisting I talked about good hygiene, appreciating our own uniqueness, and

how beauty magazines only make you feel ugly. The take home message of the day was “It’s nice to be pretty but it’s more important to be nice”. Coming up on June 16th is our big overnight camp out!

We will also be selling lemonade at the WAC Summer BBQ on June 30th

“Schlaf  im  Stroh”  -‐  What  is  it?  A  bed  &  breakfast  on  a  farm   where  you  literally  sleep  in  straw!  The  concept  is  simple,  when   the  farmers  put  their  cows  to  pasture  for  the  summer,  their   barns  sit  empty.    Guests  bring  their  own  sleeping  bags,  and   bunk  down  in  the  barn  for  the  night.    The  farmer  offers  a   hearty  breakfast  in  the  morning.  Many  farms  also   participate  in  “agri-‐tourism”  where  guests  can  participate   in  farm  chores  or  learn  more  about  the  inner-‐workings  of  the   farm.    For  families  with  school-‐age  children,  this  could  really  be  the  highlight   of  the  summer  -‐-‐  forget  those  expensive  theme  parks!    Prices  are  20chf/night  for  adults  and   10chf/night  for  children  under  16.    For  more  information  and  a  list  of  farms  and  what  they  can   offer  go  to  www.schlaf-‐im-‐stroh.ch  (english  available).

In April The Readers Gone WACky discussed The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides. After having read Middlesex in the book club last spring, the Readers Gone WACky were expecting Eugenides’ new novel to be similarly impressive. While it stimulated interesting conversation about young love and the college experience, the book was ultimately somewhat disappointing.

Readers Gone WACky Alice Knöpfel

The story is told in the three voices of recent college graduates: Madeleine, an English major exploring romantic love in both her studies and personal life; Mitchell, a nice boy who sets off on a spiritual quest in foreign lands; and Leonard, a charismatic and intelligent but disturbed biologist. Mitchell has been in love with Madeleine for years, but she falls for the enigmatic and somewhat dangerous Leonard. The tension of this love triangle propels the story forward. Members agreed that the novel captured the essence of college life in the 80’s and the peculiar aimless feelings that occupy recent graduates. However, the readers did not like any of the main characters, and were particularly frustrated with the female protagonist and her choices. Though the topic of the novel seemed to be love and marriage, members did not feel it came to any kind of resolution. And because of the many literary references, we also had a sneaking suspicion that we were missing some hidden intellectual meaning. Interestingly, the portrayal the readers most enjoyed was that of Madeleine’s parents – an old fashioned couple who supported their daughter regardless of her choices. Readers found the novel lacking in structure, with a disproportionate amount of time devoted to Madeleine without ultimately bringing the reader closer to her character. The ending of the book was viewed as both clever and flat. All in all, The Marriage Plot was a fun but irrelevant read. The Readers Gone WACky will meet on May 23 to discuss The Nemesis by Philip Roth and on June 20 to discuss The Paris Wife by Paula McLain. All meetings are at 20:00 in the WAC Lounge. NEW MEMBERS WELCOME! Please call Alice Knöpfel 044 912 2326 aknoepfel@swissonline.ch for more information.
