ER A N K E S H E T March 25th, 2009. Moving to Brooklyn – part II Well. A month has past. I am still waiting to move into my new place. It turned out that the construction next door stopped. Looks like they ran out of finance, as many other developments these days. My adventures however, didn’t end. The landlord of my new apartment promised me he will renovate the place by March 1st. when I was ready to move in on March 1st – nothing was done in the apartment. By March 5th, a guy came and splashed some paint on the walls. By March 15th the landlord and I had a big fight, ending by him taking off 1.5 months of rent, and me taking charge of the renovation. In the past 2 weeks I became a construction worker, and a contractor. A few good things I found out are that you can actually get people to do work for you for a reasonable price. I also learned how to tile, grout, caulk, clean, put pipes and build walls. A few not so good things I learned are that people like plumbers, and other construction “professionals” are insane on a good day, and mean and their word doesn’t worth the air it uses when it comes out – on a regular day. David the plumber for instance. There was a gas leak in the building. David was supposed to come on Sunday at 10am to fix it. We talked over the phone 10 times between 9:30am and 2pm. Each time he promised me he will be there in 5 minutes, he is just around the block, his guy is parking as we speak. David stopped answering the phone after 2pm, and never came on Sunday. His worker came on Monday and we fixed the gas leak, and then the toilet broke down. His worker took the toilet apart and left it outside, and David came the next morning and dropped a new toilet in the apartment at 10am, promising his worker will come in 10 minutes to install it. That worker was suppose to come every 10 minutes throughout the rest of the day, and never came. At 9pm the landlord put us all on a conf call, and David promised the worker will come at 11am the next day. At 10am my phone rings and he is asking me why am I not in the apartment, well, I said, since there is no toilet I can’t live there, and we DID SAY 11am.. after a short argument he agreed to have his guy wait for me. when I came there, they realized they are missing parts.. me and his worker spent the rest of the day waiting for David to bring the parts, and again David was around the corner, 5 minutes away and parking the car at least 20 times or more until 4pm. After the toilet was installed, it is still not working properly, 4 days later he is still coming to fix it today. Barnes the Plumber was a different story, his word was good, he did the tiles (which I had to re grout since the job was sloppy). he had fascinating stories, and is a great guy, 53 years old, doesn’t look a day over 40. had 9 wives and 14 children. Jamaica man. His ancestors are from Africa and India. According to Barnes, Apparently, there were times that slaves from Africa were sent to India and traded for Indian slaves. The going rate was 2 for 1. a catchy term that stayed with us until recent times.. And.. what am I missing.. oh yes.. so I hired a guy to arrange all the trash from the construction neatly on the side walk for garbage day pickup. Nicolas did a great job. The garbage was all ready for Saturday morning to be picked up. When I arrived to the apartment on Saturday afternoon I found out that it wasn’t picked. In addition, I was welcomed by the grunting and angry faces of neighbors from the buildings around, blaming me for the trash staying there. Apparently the garbage men, don’t pick up the trash if there’s a lot of it. Yes. They won’t. Unless you tip them. So its my responsibility to wait for them at 7:30am, and bribe them (but not directly because its not allowed), and then they will gladly collect it. Silly me. It was not simple to try and move to Brooklyn. I hope the adventures related to the move are about to end, so I can sit back and enjoy my new place. soon. soon.
