Boosting Self-Esteem Healthy self esteem is a difficult characteristic to come by. Every individual needs to have self-esteem because it affects many aspects of one’s life. It allows one to live up to their potential throughout life. The following are tips to boost not only your self-esteem, but your child’s selfesteem as well.

How to boost your self-esteem

Peyton Stacy -Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Specialist

1. Embrace your positive qualities. Make a list of your skills, talents, abilities and anything else that makes you feel good about yourself. Try writing out a list of compliments that others have given you as well; reminding yourself that you are important.

2. Remember that you are a desirable package rather than any one individual quality. See the attractive package that you are and write down your best qualities. Hang them on your mirror for a reminder of how great you are! 3. Do not let any one mistake define you. Think back to when you messed up, felt small, or unsure. Force yourself to identify five things that went well in spite of your “mistake.” We are not defined by any one circumstance, but rather by a collection of our experiences.

4. Understand that mistakes make you who you are. Remember the phrase, “When one door closes, another one opens.” When you have made a mistake and believe your life is over, typically, you have another opportunity to make things right. 5. Believe in yourself. Remember to make yourself a priority some of the time. Ask for what you want or get into a position to make it happen. Understand that you cannot make everyone happy. Understand that at times you must disappoint others for the sake of taking care of yourself. How to boost your child’s self-esteem ! to 1. Be a positive role model. This is an important! factor

imply when caring for children. If you are hard on yourself or pessimistic about your own abilities, your child might eventually copy you. Stay positive and nurture your own abilities and they will have a wonderful role model. 2. Identify irrational beliefs. It is important to recognize your child’s irrational beliefs about themselves. Assisting children with more accurate perceptions, whether it be their abilities or attractiveness, help them be more realistic in analyzing themselves.

3. Give positive and realistic feedback. For example, your child might not be good at math. If they get a problem incorrect, reassure them in their academic ability. Tell them that some children have to work harder than others on certain subjects. This does not mean they are not capable, it only means that they might need extra practice. 4. Cooperation over competition. Mentoring programs in which older children help younger children with academics or sports can boost self-esteem in both children. Activities that support cooperation instead of competition are benefiting towards self-esteem. Not only does it benefit the child who might be struggling with reading, it also boosts the abilities in the child who is teaching. 5. Create a safe environment. Be sure that your home is as safe and loving towards the child as possible. Children who are neglected and abused are at greater risk for low self-esteem. They might start to believe that they have no control of their surroundings and develop a helpless feeling. Sources:

What about the Alva Goldbugs and the Eagles of Hennessey? We have those answers and more in this basketball breakdown.

22 | Kingfisher Basketball Exciting times for Yellowjacket basketball. Seniors Hailey Matthews, Shalyn Layn and Baylee Hyatt lead a talented girl’s squad, while seniors Gatlin Squires, Keaton Ely and Landon Nault look to get the boy’s team to the state tournament.

Next Issue... Winter sports are heating up. Next month we bring you more coverage from the hardwood and the wrestling mat!

NWOK Schools Finish Fall Strong and Gear Up For Winter The Northwest region of the state came out with some major hardware this fall with Kingfisher, Laverne and Cherokee all winning gold balls on the gridiron. While this issue contains recaps on all of those teams and their path to a title don’t think that’s the only thing the VYPE team brought to the table. Several teams from across the region are ranked very highly to start the year including the Alva and Fairview girls and the Woodward, Piedmont, Arnett and Cheyenne boys.

The region does boast several VYPE Top 100 girls basketball players in Jaden Hobbs of Alva, Sadie Mason of Fairview, Jessica Blanton of DCLA, Jade Jones of Pond Creek-Hunter, Taylor Mendell of Lomega and Alix Robinson of Cashion. On the boys side Tyler Tune of Arnett, Braygan Lippencott of Cheyenne along with Adrion Williams and Cameron Peters of Piedmont make the list. Being chosen to the prestigious list makes all four players eligible to win either the Mr. or Mrs. Oklahoma Basketball award so make sure you take time to cast your vote on our online poll at www.vypeok.com. Just like always we want to say thank you to our readers and advertisers for your continued support. Stay safe out there and remember we’ll see you at the game.

NWOK Schools Claim State Titles

Kingfisher Wins Class 3A; Nick Smith with Game of a Lifetime Coming into the 2013 season, Kingfisher had a preseason ranking of No.3 behind top ranked Blanchard and Seminole. Two teams the Yellowjackets would defeat on their way to a Class 3A state championship. Head coach Jeff Myers had a known commodity in running back Landon Nault. Nault was a VYPE Top 100 selectee and was chasing the all-time rushing record in Oklahoma. Couple Nault with a salty defense and the Yellowjackets were quickly becoming a team with the look of a champion.

But the road to the finals would not be an easy one. In the first round the Yellowjackets faced a game Purcell Dragons team, but the Purcell defense had no answer for Kingfisher as the Yellowjackets picked up an easy, 52-9 win to advance to the next round. Facing Jones in the second round, the Yellowjackets led by Nault shut out the Longhorns, 48-0. A 46-8 win over Beggs in the quarters set up the marquee matchup of Seminole’s Papi White vs. Nault. Both teams played well, but the Yellowjacket defense proved to strong for White and the Noles as Kingfisher rolled to a, 32-14 victory. A rematch of the 2012 state finals was

delayed by a winter storm, then moved up one day for fear of another storm on the horizon. The change had no effect on the team according to coach Myers.

Kingfisher sophomore Nick Smith played the game of a lifetime, thanks in part to Nault doing his best impression as a decoy. Nault would contribute 33 yards on 13 carries, but Smith rushed for an amazing 231 yards on only 10 carries. In the first quarter Smith scored on a 75-yard dash, but Smith would miss the ensuing PAT. Up 6-0, Kingfisher would add a 35-yard field goal from Smith and go up, 9-0. The second quarter was dominated by Blanchard and running back Braden Stringer who scored 16 unanswered points to go up, 16-9 at halftime. Stringer would finish the game with 26 carries for 160 yards. Smith would come back with a vengeance scoring on runs of 36, 83 and 25 yards. The Blanchard defense had no answer for the sophomore who also kicked his own PAT’s. Blanchard would add a fourth quarter touchdown on a 10-yard reception from Blake Owen to Stringer, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Yellowjackets. Smith scored all 30 points for Kingfisher in route to the, 30-23 win after two-straight runner-up finishes for coach Myers. The win caps off a perfect 15-0 season for the Yellowjackets and captures the schools first title since 2003 and the schools second title overall.

Laverne Repeats as Class B Champs With Blowout Win Over Pond Creek-Hunter Last season the Laverne Tigers finished the year 14-0 and won the Class B gold ball. This season Laverne picked up right where they left off and again went 14-0 claiming the Class B championship with a lopsided 42-12 win over Pond Creek-Hunter. Running back Trevor Harris was the man of the hour in the title game rushing for 297 yards and four touchdowns on just 16 carries. Quarterback Tucker Rolf also had a big game picking up 83 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries. On the defensive side of the ball Dalton Birch led the way for the Tigers with 17 total tackles. Chiefs Hammer Defending Champ Tipton in Title Game

Before 2010 the Cherokee Chiefs had never won a gold ball in football. Now the Chiefs have won two titles in the past four years after blowing out Tipton 38-14 in the Class C title game.

The Chiefs used dominant efforts from running back Tanner Ducotey and quarterback Tanner Bowman to earn the victory over the defending champ. Ducotey rushed for 275 yards and two touchdowns in the game while Bowman added 112 yards and three touchdowns. Cherokee jumped out to a big 16-0 lead after one quarter and never looked back. By halftime the Chiefs led 246. After three quarters the lead had ballooned to 32-6 leaving the game in no real doubt. Tipton scored early in the fourth to cut the score to 32-14 but that was as close as the Tigers would get. Bowman added his final score later in the final quarter to put the final nail in the coffin.

Boys The Enid Plainsmen will look to capitalize on their size, something Enid hasn’t had in several years. Look for Michael Majors (6-7) and Devon Edwards (6-5) to use their size to score and defend. Marcus Moore and Raeshaan Finley will play at guard, with Finley as a good three point shooter. The Plainsmen will need for senior swingman Randy Porter, junior shooting guards Braden Rogers and Austin Duplantis to step up and provide quality playing time. The Plainsmen will also need to develop depth and find some players that want to step up and get playing time. Coach Wilkinson likes this team because of their work ethic and desire to improve each day. The Enid Plainsmen led by Michael Majors and Devon Edwards have found themselves in some tough games early, but have continued to make improvements. Coach Wilkinson will look to point guard Marcus Moore and shooting guard Raeshaan Finley to provide a spark on offense.

Mom of the

Month

Dede Boedeker – Chisholm Mom Mother of Chisholm High School softball and basketball player Caisha Boedeker. Dede Boedeker is the type of mom that is a bit of an unsung hero. As a teacher at Drummond High School, Dede commutes everyday to and from work and still makes the time to devote her life to her three children. Daughters Jalyn (20) and Caisha as well as son Jack (13). “She deserves every bit of acknowledgement because she is a dedicated mother and teacher. She does anything and everything to make us happy. We are glad she is our mother and couldn’t be happier,” said Caisha. Husband Jeff is a farmer and being the wife of a farmer also comes with added responsibility. Jalyn was an athlete in high school and Caisha gives credit to her mom in raising active kids. “We are all active and our parents have always given us an opportunity to compete or participate in anything we may have a desire to pursue.” Dede teaches Biology at Drummond and also helps with computer class as well as pre-K development.

Integris Bass Baptist Health Center Announces Development of New Health Complex INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center has begun development of a new health complex on the north side of Enid. Construction on the facility is now in its final stages with street signage already up and just a few minor things to complete. The new facility has a projected opening date of January 28. INTEGRIS Specialty Care of Enid and INTEGRIS Urgent Care North will be located at 2821 N. Van Buren and include an orthopedic sports medicine and neurosciences center with diagnostic capabilities, and an urgent care facility. Physicians to be located in the new center include orthopedic surgeons Todd Reilly, D.O., and James Harrington, D.O., foot and ankle surgeon Alex Lebrija, D.P.M., neurologist Pedro Cardich, M.D., and neurosurgeon Bruce Pendleton, M.D. The location of the complex will fill a gap in urgent care access to Enid’s north side residents, as well as those communities north

and west of Enid. Furthermore, Specialty Care of Enid will provide a medical clinic that combines key specialties aimed at improving patient outcomes and providing easier access for patients. The clinic focuses on patients with orthopedic and sports medicine needs, as well as patients with neurological conditions, specialties that often intertwine with one another. This allows physicians a unique opportunity to consult with one another in a single clinic setting. “As patient satisfaction becomes a top priority in health care, it is vital that we look for opportunities to improve access for patients, as well as maintain the best possible care for our patients,” says Jordan

Cash, Assistant Vice President, INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center. “The new complex will do both.”

GET BACK IN THE GAME

INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center provides leading edge treatment to keep you moving and get you back in the game. Our team includes two board certified orthopaedic surgeons and a board certified ankle and foot surgeon making INTEGRIS Bass the best choice for sports medicine in northwest Oklahoma. Blaine Whitson (5-9, Sr.) averaged 6.0 points per game and should get the start at point. Preston Atwood (6-0, Jr.) is the shooting guard the Trojans will lean on to exploit opposing defenses and hit open jumpers. 7 Ways To benefiT from PhySiCal TheraPy physiCal therapists Work With patients Who have medical problems or conditions that limit the ability to move and/or perform typical daily activities. Patients who need physical therapy may include those recovering from an injury, a stroke or surgery, or who are dealing with arthritis or another condition that limits movement. The therapists at St. Mary’s Center for Rehabilitation are a close-knit group. Many of the eight staff members have worked together for more than a decade, notes Brad Miller, Supervisor of Outpatient Physical Therapy and physical therapist. “We know each other well, and this helps us create a warm, caring environment for patients,” he says. Treatment plans can help patients gain strength, increase mobility, reduce pain and prevent further or recurring disability. If you have been referred to a physical therapist for treatment, these seven tips can help you get the most from your sessions:

1

set Goals. Depending on your condition, you and your physical therapist will work together to set both long- and short-term goals. Short-term goals are the “baby steps” you need to take to reach your long-term goals.

2

be patient. Mr. Miller says that patients sometimes become discouraged when they don’t see improvement right away or reach a plateau. “Remember that certain conditions took years to develop, and it takes time to get to where you want to be,” he says.

let us help you If you’ve received a referral for physical therapy, please visit www.stmarysregional.com or give us a call at 580-237-8278 and learn how we can work with you.

5 Chris Walker, physical therapist assistant, helps patient michael dickinson with performing low back stretches.

CoMMuniCate With your therapist. Each patient is different, so the same exercises won’t always achieve the same results. There is usually more than one way to achieve a desired result. If an exercise doesn’t seem effective or it’s hard to do at home, you feel unmotivated, or feel pain when doing the exercise, tell your therapist. This can help the therapist understand how to adjust your treatment and help you achieve your short- or long-term goals.

6

eduCate yourself about your Condition and treatMent. If you don’t understand your condition or why you’ve been prescribed an exercise, ask your physical therapist for an explanation. When you understand how each exercise will help you reach your goals, you may be more motivated to stick to them.

3

CoMe to appointMents on tiMe and ready to Work. Your physical therapist sets aside time just for you and is ready with a treatment plan. If you arrive late or unmotivated to put in the effort to carry out that plan, your progress may be slowed. Also, be sure to wear comfortable exercise clothing to your very first appointment so you can be evaluated and start your program right away.

7

alloW faMily MeMbers or other loved ones to help. Those who are closest to you often are good cheerleaders. If you have an off day or simply don’t feel like doing your exercises, let those around you help get your motivation back. Tell them how you’re feeling and what they can do to help.

4

understand your hoMeWork and CoMMit to it. Make sure you get a complete, understandable list of exercises to do at home. It can be difficult to remember everything you do at the physical therapist’s office. And be sure to do the exercises — this is critical to your progress and to achieving your goals.

McKenna James – Enid Volleyball/Basketball Enid Basketball/Volleyball player McKenna James is Humphrey Abstract’s Character Counts Athlete of the Month. While she may be known for her athletic diversity, James’ voluntary involvement is both admirable and patriotic. James’ roots lie in the military, where her father, Col. Darren James, is a wing commander at Vance Air Force Base. In addition to her volunteer work for her local animal shelter and the 4Rkids foundation, James nourishes her connection with the Air Force by feeding airmen in the dorms and making care packages for deployed members of Vance Air Force Base. James plans on majoring in air space engineering and playing volleyball for the Air Force Academy. Her post graduation plans are to go through pilot training and fly cargo planes; just like her dad.

GIRLS Scot Friesen (22nd year) 12-13 Record: 11-19 Outlook: The return of four starters plus the strength of an athletic group of younger players has the Lady Wildcats expecting to make reservations for the main stage at the Big House in March. A pair of senior forwards, Dani Puckett (10.3ppg) and Mattie Atha (3.4ppg) will once again provide the leadership for coach Scot Friesen’s squad. “We’ll be fun to watch,” said Friesen, who begins his 22nd year on the bench at Arnett. “Our experienced players have continued to work hard and the development of the younger kids has made us a much improved team. 12-13 Record: 23-8 Outlook: The Wildcats are the defending Class B State Champions and have plenty of reasons to believe they can defend their crown this year as three starters return from the 23-win campaign. Reason number one is the return of VYPE Top 100 standout Tyler Tune (27.0ppg/14.4reb/4.9asst), who was named state tournament MVP last season. Reason number two the play of Nicolas Smith (10.3ppg/5.1reb) and Ryne Friesen (9.7ppg/3.3reb). Reason number three is solid support cast giving head coach Allen Tune the right to expect another great season while opposing coaches have voted Arnett to the number one spot in the Class B polls. “We’re able to shoot outside better than in the past,” said Tune, “and we can run the floor in transition. The play of a couple of sophomores are a great mix with the older guys. Anything short of the state tournament would be a major disappointment.”

This year as Alva makes the jump to 3A head coach Eric Smith has four returning starters to lean on, including sophomore point guard and VYPE Top 100 selection Jaden Hobbs (5-7). In her freshman season Hobbs came onto the scene in a big way averaging 17.4 points, 6.3 assists and 3.3 steals per game. Other key players on the perimeter will be juniors Bailey Forell (56) and Kally Gordon (5-6). Last year Forrell averaged 7.1 points per game while Gordon chipped in 3.5 points per game. Inside Lady Bugs fans can expect familiar faces Lora Riley (5-8) and Morgan Shiever (5-9) to lead the way after the two combined to average 15.5 points and nine rebounds per game last year. “We are still very young with no seniors on the team. Leadership and chemistry with our young players will be important,” Smith said.

BOYS Paul Duncan (3rd year) 12-13 Record: 23-4 Outlook: With a veteran group of returning players back Alva head coach Paul Duncan was extremely excited about the prospects for the season. Unfortunately for Duncan he is already having to deal with a major obstacle in the form of a season-ending injury to starting forward Cade Pfleider. While Pfleider’s injury definitely hurts the Goldbugs, Duncan is still very optimistic about the season. The player that will need to do the most in Pfleider’s absence may be senior forward Riley Hess (6-4) who averaged 11 points and nine rebounds a game last year as a junior. Also playing a much bigger role inside this year will be senior center Lane Madsen (6-7). Last season Madsen averaged six points and eight rebounds per game and is expected to improve those numbers this season. Guards Ty Hooper (5-11) and Jeremiah Bozeman will also be crucial pieces of the puzzle this year as will dead-eye shooter Trevor Johnson (5-8). BOYS Patrick Finney (5th year) 12-13 Record 5-18 Outlook: Calling this the best team he’s had since he’s been at Geary, coach Patrick Finney is looking for big things from his Bison in 2013-2014. And the reason for his optimism is the return of four of his starters from last year’s squad, paced by his son Christian Finney (10.8ppg/5.9reb). “Experience should pay dividends for us this season,” said Finney. “Quality depth will also lend a helping hand.” The younger Finney will have several familiar faces back with him on the court for this campaign including D’angelo Richey (11.2ppg), Colton Blair (5.9ppg/6.6reb), and Clifford Littlebear (4.7reb). The inside game should be strong for Geary with junior forward Donovan Osage (8reb) adding muscle in the paint. The Lady Eagles are adjusting to McBride’s style of play and have plenty of talent to run his up-tempo game that stresses

returns as one of the Boomers leading scorers. Also returning to the lineup is Kaleb Roach (65, Sr.) and Ty Richey (6-2, Jr.). Head coach Corey Miller will look to guys like Logan Pope, Slade Roach, Miach Kee, and center Devon Comstock for quality minutes this season. Girls Head coach Kinzie Didier is excited for the 2013-14 season to begin. “Our players have worked hard during the preseason and are ready to compete this season.” Amanda Covalt (5-9, Sr.) is one of three returning

Boomers starters to the floor this season. Covalt brings senior leadership to a young team. Sophomores Hillary Hurst (6-0) and Kameron Pope (5-7) are a quick combo at forward and guard. Both players can find the basket from any spot on the floor. Shelbi Smithton (5-7, Jr.) is another solid guard with a good jump shot. Junior forward Lauren Garner (6-0) will slide inside to grab crucial rebounds, but isn’t afraid to step out and hit jumpers. Overall the Lady Boomers have improved and a tough schedule will help them as the look to make a run in the playoffs.
