The thesis seeks to re-arrange program spaces within this narrow plot of 3m by 15m, which is blocked off of sunlight es. The new spatial arrangement looks at transverse sectional division, which allows floors to flow more seamlessly allows light and air to circulate the house, produces different ceiling heights to accompany the appropriate program, neighbors, whose floor heights have no correlation to one another.

The project solves the problem of light and green space by introducing an atrium to the back of the house. This cre residential houses don’t have (many of which has planting space on the rooftop patio). As a result, the thesis hop house and serve as a connection to its backdoor neighbor. The new precedent is meant to utilize the unusable g brings wind and light to the houses.

The project also studies operable walls to incorporate them into the space. They are a necessity as they allow residents to open up the houses and control view, light, and air flows. By introducing new spatial ideas but keeping them subtle, the design allows a comfortable change in people living culture, hoping its success will influence and improve the Vietnamese housing condition.

Part I Film Set Design

This film set design was derived from a movie screening and precedent study. From the Hong Kong movie Divergence (2005), the idea of the horizontal and the vertical elements are shown in exchangeable to direct the eyes and focus to what is needed to be emphasized. The composition of the two allows one to manipulate the balance of what is shown.

Part II Central Market

This project aims to develop the design of the new Central Market with a hypothetical program of a film archive.

The existing architecture had variously strong horizontal elements, such as the window envelope that wrapped around the building, the individual market booths, and the circulation. As one experiences the city of Hong Kong, by all means of transportation and on different levels of topography, one constantly moves horizontally to the streetscape while the focus is directed to the lower-level shops. Even though the city is so dense with high skyscrapers, its accesses are very limited to the public. This can be seen at the site of Central Market, where there is a strong emphasis on moving horizontally than vertically. Furthermore, due to the site’s location, being right at the topographic change, there are different accesses to the surrounding.

Part II Central Market

The goal of this design is to place emphasis on both horizontal and vertical circulation in order to carefully direct people through the place. The shifted form allows the building to interact with its surrounding highrises, while at the same time departing from its boxy exterior. Vertical cores of circulation are added, placing strategically for easy accessibility. Furthermore, the cores act not only as a circulation but as a program space. This gives continuity to the whole building vertically. This results in important interaction spaces where the horizontal and the vertical element meets. The shifted courtyards also provide a false feeling of a larger space, as it opens up the diagonal path, again for easy accessibility. The existing conditions were kept as much as possible to preserve the old historical building. The elements are the iconic staircase, the wrapped horizontal windows, and the structural system of the gridded columns and beams. cross section 1

naun gabo’s analysis

Part I Installation Design

This installation is inspired by the Russian constructivist artist named Naum Gabo during the 19th century. Naum Gabo was associated with the Constructivists at the time of the Russian revolution and embraced new scientific theories and industrial materials. Central to Gabo’s works was a method known as ‘stereometric construction’ by which form was achieved through the description of space, rather than the establishment of mass. In 1915-20, Gabo used planes to construct heads and figures that demonstrated the application of this method to traditional subjects. Specific works like the ‘Head No.2’,’Linear Construction in Space No.1’, ’Linear Construction in Space No.2’, ‘Column’ and ‘Constructivist Ballet’ sparked ideas for the constructed installation.

Main idea includes constructed planes in place of space, virtually symmetrical and intersecting, illusion of continuous depth and changing over time.

The installation started with exploring the different simple shapes of minimal surfaces, which is very similar to Naum Gabo. After finding a surface that potentially fits the whole ideas listed above, one unit of surfaces was created by different transformations like rotating and reflecting.

Part II Museum Design

The museum is a result of a study of relationships between distributed artifacts, engagement relations related to the program, and its distribution.

Each artifact has its own level of activity engagement and experience. One can be walked around; one can be gone into, climbed onto, inhabited into; or one can be all. The artifacts then are ranked based on their involvements(s). Program activity involvements are also ranked, with auditorium as maximum involvements and storage as least. Then, both artifacts and programs are paired together in order to balance out and maximize each visitor’s experience. This is the reason why specific artifacts are closer together or further apart, which helps achieve flows through the program. Circulation layout is determined by human experience as well as visual connection from artifact to artifacts. Glass and concrete are chosen as the primary material because it supports the visual and framed view. Fritting patterned glass on the exterior of the museum reveals the different programs to the outside and provides privacy, yet still maintains its transparent characteristic. ​​​​​​

The city of Baltimore is involved with a lot of urban farming activities and it has a lot of vacant lots available for people to use. Inspired by the bitter melon, the exotic vines growing program is seen as an interesting application to the site and the city. Vines create nice shades and cooling effects, bear healthy fruits and their flowers are extremely beautiful. Vines like the bitter melon, sweet pea, grape, passion fruit, kiwis, and etc.

The program is meant to showcase the beauty of vines, which is relatively unknown to people, and its fruit production. The building, at the same time, can become a focal element of the city, creating unique visibility which captures people’s interest in growing vines.

By looking at both the study of the bitter melon fruit and the site at Baltimore one can imagine how the building fits and interacts with the site. Through the use of waffle and facet fabrication, the resulting structure is seen as emerging and floating from the ground. With a faceted dome placed over, occupied by vines growing on the light tab-like structures, one can experience the spatial quality of both being in the interior and the exterior, constantly looking at this unique fuzzy looking, green covered dome.

The course is a survey and introductory on the history of traditional architecture and allied arts of East Asia which includes China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. East Asian architecture stayed thousands of years in timber structural system and many magnificent palaces, temples, castles, and gardens were created with this system.

The final project of the course is a 12-pages paper discussing one chosen traditional precedent within East Asia. It focuses on describing the architectural significance of the building involving its history, culture, and practices. Architectural drawings and models were optional but preferred.

Learning to produce a series of highly defined drawings that will force one to depict one’s working process through the lens of a specific architectural case study. Emphasis is placed on thoughtful drawings that tell a story through the appropriate use of line weights, line types, hatches, and other drawing elements presented.

This Japanese hotel with its monumental facade is composed of a series of stacked amber-colored Iranian travertine columns and chemically aged copper lintels. The 62-rooms hotel block sits atop a stepped stone base, which provides for a public piazza in front of the main entrance to the hotel. existing This project consists of 4 dealerships per the client’s request: Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen, and Mazda. After studying the site and the required programs, Audi and Porsche Showroom is a new additional expansion of the existing dealership complex. While the Service Building block in the rear will remain and be renovated, the entire front of the old Ford complex - is demolished and replaced.

The re-use of this site/building saves resources, and a general goal is to maintain large portions of the site without major disturbance. While the new exterior designs maintain some of the characteristics of each corporate identity, the overriding intent is to create a cohesive building and one that is in keeping with the local character and Entrance Corridor Guidelines.

existing The project on the west side of the old Ford property (Parcel 7800-6) includes both a new Mazda and VW Dealership. Mazda would occupy what is currently the old pre-owned building. While Volkswagen will be a completely new building next to Mazda.

While renovating the existing structure, Mazda’s scope of work would also include 2 new small additions -one on either side of the building - as well as a completely new facade across the building front.

Volkswagen facade follows its strict corporation standards. Only a few modifies were made due to the local Review Board.

While the Porsche, Volkswagen, and Mazda projects are similar to that of its required corporation standards, the a different look due to the strict local review board. The final form was determined after various design iterations satisfying corporate’s demand and the client’s desire. While separation is requested by both dealerships to avo identities, the central block - a simple recessed wall of minimal dark gray metal paneling - provides an architectur the two styles while creating a pause for transition. It has also acted to eliminate the elongate facade and prov operational spaces.

Realistic renders combined with virtual reality allow the client and brand corporates to visualize the space and its ap a result, all parties can reach agreeable negotiation and be satisfied.

NOTE: VISIBILITY OF ALL MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT FROM THE ENTRANCE CORRIDOR SHALL BE ELIMINATED.
