2020 marked the 99th anniversary of the Tulsa race massacre. This was when white rioters looted and burned the prosperous Black area known as “Black Wall Street.” 35 city blocks were devastated, 800+ people were injured, and historians believe as many as 300 people died. This devastating tragedy marks just one of many ways Black businesses have been targeted by individuals and government policy. Get the full history here.

Wealth gaps between Black and white households reveal the effects of accumulated inequality and discrimination, as well as differences in power and opportunity that can be traced back to this nation’s inception. Inheritance or estate taxes in particular could enhance equality of opportunity, especially if revenues were invested in programs that give low-income children a better chance at economic success.

The coronavirus pandemic has thrown a fresh set of challenges at Blackowned businesses. Lockdown orders hit Black-owned businesses especially hard, and though the $2.2 trillion CARES Act handed out forgivable loans to shore up businesses, an estimated 90% of Black-owned firms were either ineligible for the money or denied loans.

In a time of total unpredictability, we understand that the thought of shopping may not be the most appealing right now. Well, what if there was a delicious way to support Black businesses from the comfort of your own home? Introducing Black and Mobile. Black and Mobile is the country’s first delivery service to partner exclusively with Black-owned businesses (think Grubhub, Caviar, Uber Eats, etc.). The goal of Black and Mobile is to highlight underrepresented businesses in the urban communities that are often overlooked, and provide them with the technology needed to not only expand their customer base, but to stay competitive in this rapidly changing industry. Black and Mobile has also provided hundreds of jobs to the men and women from these communities over the last year. Because this guide is ever-evolving, Black and Mobile highlights some restaurants and neighborhoods that are not yet included in this document, but will be in the near future. The following restaurants in the Philadelphia area currently offer delivery via Black and Mobile.
