Black-Owned Beauty Supply Association (BOBSA) is positioned to offer a new business concept, which is a Black-owned, beauty supply franchise store. This plan will result in a positive outcome as well as address the economic problem and concerns of African Americans within the community. Twenty years ago, hair care products aimed at African-American consumers were supplied by small companies and sold through independent beauty and barber stores. While that is still often the case, some of those small manufacturers have now become divisions of such large corporations as L’Oreal and Procter & Gamble Co, two of the key players in ethnic personal care today.

Gabby Douglas Makes U.S. World History 2012!
abrielle Christina Victoria Douglas, or Gabby Douglas, made American and black history at the 2012 Summer Olympics where she was the first AfricanAmerican woman to ever win gold for the individual all-around competition, as well as the first ever American to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competition at the same Olympics. Douglas was born on New Year’s Eve in 1995 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She began training in gymnastics at age 6. She won her first medal, the Level 4 all-around gymnastics title, at age 8 at the 2004 Virginia State Championships. She made her national debut at the 2010 Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup in Worcester, Massachusetts where she placed 4th all-around. Douglas would go on to dominate multiple national and international competitions, such as the 2010 Covergirl Classics in Chicago, the 2010 Junior National Championships, the 2010 Pan American Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico, and the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. Michelle Obama Early Life Michelle Obama was born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson on January 17, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. She would later become a lawyer, Chicago city ad-

Students Join First Lady Michelle Obama to Plant the White House Kitchen Garden Posted by Colleen Curtis on April 04, 2013 First Lady Michelle Obama invited students from across the country to join her today on the South Lawn for what has become a favorite tradition: planting the White House Kitchen Garden. For the fifth year in a row, Mrs. Obama and Let’s Move Executive Director Sam Kass got their hands dirty as they planted the vegetables that will be harvested this summer and enjoyed by the First Family and White House guests, and donated to local charities. The Sarah Moore Greene Magnet Technology Academy in Knox County, Tennessee started a Jeffersonian Heirloom Garden and connected the project to 3rd-5th grade social studies coursework on America’s history, highlighting American presidents who have had a role in gardening and land steward

The Milton Elementary School in Milton, Vermont has turned lunchtime into a dining experience for students, thanks to lunches developed using MyPlate standards, salad bars, local ingredients, and delicious takes on fruits and vegetables like squash with nutmeg and cinnamon. Students from Harriet Tubman and Bancroft Elementary Schools in Washington, DC, which have been active participants in the White House Kitchen Garden since its inception, were also on hand. This year’s crop will once again include favorites like spinach, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, fennel, Swiss chard and several kinds of lettuce, as well as two kinds of wheat, a new addition for 2013.

paralegal. I noticed that African Americans were traveling to Oakland and San Francisco to purchase hair supplies, and upon a little investigating, discovered there really were only a couple of black beauty supply stores in the area, as the old adage goes “find the need and fill it”. We were very profitable the first year, which my accountant informed me was almost unheard of. The first rule of thumb that I follow and have followed in my 20th tenure is to pray about everything. With the guidance of God I begin to do research into the hair and beauty supply industry. I found an inexpensive storefront and a distributor; actually a store (distributor) in L.A.
