According to Soft Sheen/Carson President Candace Matthews, “Many opportunities exist because of the numerous styling choices of today’s African- American consumers, from relaxed hair to natural styles, from afros to the bald look.”

BOBSA is clear that a for-profit enterprise is necessary to realize the vision of the non-profit organization. Whereas, memberships can meet the needs of only a sparse amount of the budget; actualization of the goals and objectives to nationally increase Black Entrepreneurs is underway, with the opening of several BOBSA Black Owned Beauty Supply Stores. While Black manufacturers and distributors are gearing up for volume increases, BOBSA is working hard to build significant infrastructure to sustain the demands rising daily. Even though these stores are owned independently, with the Assistance of BOBSA to connect the manufacturer to the distributor and the distributor to the retailer, success is imminent. BOBSA benefits from these partnerships to offset.

Black-Owned Beauty Supply Association (BOBSA) is positioned to offer a new business concept, which is a Black-owned, beauty supply franchise store. This plan will result in a positive outcome as well as address the economic problem and concerns of African Americans within the community. Twenty years ago, hair care products aimed at African-American consumers were supplied by small companies and sold through independent beauty and barber stores. While that is still often the case, some of those small manufacturers have now become divisions of such large corporations as L’Oreal and Procter & Gamble Co, two of the key players in ethnic personal care today.

BOBSA “Connecting the Black Dots” addressing the Condition of Black American Economics

There are also a large percentage of women in transition from relaxed to natural hair. BOBSA will provide a wide selection of hair care products targeting women seeking to purchase natural products. Among African-Americans both physical and cultural factors influence purchasing decisions of such products as hair care items. Many of the types of hair styles that have been favored by many African-Americans involve chemicals and heat that tend to dry out and damage hair. Nonetheless, ethnic products, once comprising a relatively narrow niche, have now gotten the attention of large consumer product companies eager to capitalize on this growing market.

Operating expenses and other costs associated with running an organization. Other endeavors are being planned to garner the attention of the consumer base as well. A multi-layered marketing plan is underway that will brand BOBSA in the Black community. As you may already be aware, the Black community is unique in many facets. Selecting the correct communication tools that will reach the Black community is imperative. Critically speaking, the many unsuccessful methodologies used to heal the brokenness that slavery and psychological oppression have caused; continuing what our great leaders started, BOBSA is leading the charge to bring about change through the Black Beauty Supply/Cosmetology Industry. Through creative marketing strategies, our goal is to create win-win scenarios for everyone involved.

the ability to put the right products in the right store. Based on BOBSA’s research, there is a reason to believe that 2013 will provide a lift for the ethnic personal care business. AfricanAmerican hair care products represent about 40 percent of the total category and according to industry suppliers in the business, hair care is ripe for a big year. Beauty Industry forecasters this year predict a wide range of looks that will lead to a bump in several segments of hair care.

America’s First African American PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY!

very day, the people I meet inspire me. Every day they make me proud, every day they remind me how blessed we are to live in the greatest nation on Earth. Serving as your first lady is an honor and a privilege.”

Michelle Obama Early Life Michelle Obama was born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson on January 17, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. She would later become a lawyer, Chicago city ad-

ministrator, community outreach worker and—as the wife of U.S. President Barack Obama— the United States’ first lady. Michelle was raised on Chicago’s South Side in a one-bedroom apartment. Her father, Fraser Robinson, was a city pump operator and a Democratic precinct captain. Her mother, Marian, was a Spiegel’s secretary who later stayed home to raise Michelle and her older brother, Craig. The family has been described as a close-knit one that shared family meals, read and played games together. Craig and Michelle, 21 months apart in age, were often mistaken for twins. The siblings also shared close quarters—they slept in the living room with a sheet serving as their makeshift room divider. Both children were raised with an emphasis on education. The brother and sister learned to read at home by the age of 4, and both skipped second grade.

the best schools we could.” Michelle graduated in 1981 from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in Chicago’s West Loop as class salutatorian. After high school, she followed her brother to Princeton University, graduating cum laude in 1985 with a B.A. in Sociology. She went on to earn a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1988, where she took part in demonstrations demanding more minority students and professors.

Marriage to Barack Obama Following law school, Michelle worked as an associate in the Chicago branch of the law firm Sidley Austin in the area of marketing and intellectual property. There, in 1989, she met her future husband, Barack Obama, a summer intern to whom she was assigned as an adviser. “I went to Harvard and he went to Harvard, and the firm thought, ‘Oh, we’ll hook these two people up,’” Michelle said. “So, you know, there was a little intrigue, but I must say after about a month, Barack ... asked me out, and I thought, ‘No way. This is completely tacky.’” Initially, she refused to date Barack, believing that their work relationship would make the romance improper.

Gifted Student By sixth grade, Michelle was attending gifted classes, where she learned French and took accelerated courses. She then went on to attend the city’s first magnet high school for gifted children, where, among other activities, she served as the student government treasurer. “Without being immodest, we were always smart, we were always driven and we were always encouraged to do the best you can do, not just what’s necessary,” her brother, Craig, has said. “And when it came to going to schools, we all wanted to go to

Michelle and the girls received a lot of attention for their inauguration fashions, which included clothes from Thomas Browne, J. Crew and Kate Spade. giving talks and making public appearances. In June 2012, she spoke to a crowd in Philadelphia, telling them, “It all boils down to one simple question: Will we continue the change we’ve begun and the progress we’ve made, or will we let everything we’ve fought for slip away?” She urged those in attendance to give “a little part of your life each week to this campaign.” In August 2012, Michelle delivered a noteworthy speech at the Democratic National Convention. “Every day, the people I meet inspire me. Every day they make me proud, every day they remind me how blessed we are to live in the greatest nation on earth,” she said. “Serving as your first lady is an honor and a privilege.” She went on to praise the

Latino community for supporting President Obama, and stated that her husband—”the same man [she] fell in love with all those years ago”—understands the American Dream, as well as the everyday struggles of American families, and cares deeply about making a difference in people’s lives. Michelle won both public and critical praise for her narrative, called a “shining moment” by The Washington Post. On November 6, 2012, Barack Obama was re-elected for a second term as U.S. president. After Mitt Romney conceded defeat, Michelle Obama accompanied her husband with their two daughters, Malia and Sasha, onto the stage at the McCormick Place in Chicago where President Obama delivered his acceptance speech. To celebrate his victory, Barack Obama tweeted “Four more years” with a photo of him hugging his wife, which was taken at an August campaign event in Iowa. On election night, the presidential message with the photo of the first couple became the most popular tweet of all time.

Issues and Causes As the 44th first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama has focused her attention on issues such as the support of military families, helping working women balance career and family, and encouraging national service. During the first year of the Obama presidency, Michelle and her husband volunteered at homeless shelters and soup kitchens in the Washington, D.C., area. Michelle also has made appearances at public schools, stressing the importance of education and volunteer work.

Students Join First Lady Michelle Obama to Plant the White House Kitchen Garden Posted by Colleen Curtis on April 04, 2013 First Lady Michelle Obama invited students from across the country to join her today on the South Lawn for what has become a favorite tradition: planting the White House Kitchen Garden. For the fifth year in a row, Mrs. Obama and Let’s Move Executive Director Sam Kass got their hands dirty as they planted the vegetables that will be harvested this summer and enjoyed by the First Family and White House guests, and donated to local charities. First Lady Michelle Obama and students participate in the Spring White House Kitchen Garden planting on the South Lawn of the White House, April 4, 2013. students from schools that have made exceptional improvements to their school lunches through the implementation of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. At the Benjamin David Gullett Elementary School in Bradenton, Florida teachers use gardening as a learning opportunity for students, and the school’s food and nutrition program teaches students about planting, growing, and tasting vegetables to give them a better understanding of nutritious food. And the Arthur D. Healey School in Somerville, Massachusetts -- which has had a school garden since 2004 -- now has a Farm to School program that includes food education events like “corn shucking day” when kids learn about the food they’re eating in school meals. The Sarah Moore Greene Magnet Technology Academy in Knox County, Tennessee started a Jeffersonian Heirloom Garden and connected the project to 3rd-5th grade social studies coursework on America’s history, highlighting American presidents who have had a role in gardening and land steward

ship. The Milton Elementary School in Milton, Vermont has turned lunchtime into a dining experience for students, thanks to lunches developed using MyPlate standards, salad bars, local ingredients, and delicious takes on fruits and vegetables like squash with nutmeg and cinnamon. Students from Harriet Tubman and Bancroft Elementary Schools in Washington, DC, which have been active participants in the White House Kitchen Garden since its inception, were also on hand. This year’s crop will once again include favorites like spinach, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, fennel, Swiss chard and several kinds of lettuce, as well as two kinds of wheat, a new addition for 2013.

Ms. Gwen Neal, a business owner and an awesome Woman of God!

“I began Nefertiti Beauty Supply store in 1993, after leaving a career as a

paralegal. I noticed that African Americans were traveling to Oakland and San Francisco to purchase hair supplies, and upon a little investigating, discovered there really were only a couple of black beauty supply stores in the area, as the old adage goes “find the need and fill it”. We were very profitable the first year, which my accountant informed me was almost unheard of. The first rule of thumb that I follow and have followed in my 20th tenure is to pray about everything. With the guidance of God I begin to do research into the hair and beauty supply industry. I found an inexpensive storefront and a distributor; actually a store (distributor) in L.A. (Friday’s Beauty Supply”) supplied me with beauty products and hair extensions, and henceforth began my venture with less than $6,000.

All products and Materials Should arrive at our Fulfillment Center no later than the 24th of the prior month.

In 1997 we opened a second location on the south side of San Jose, California and incorporated a beauty salon and nail salon combined with beauty supplies and hair extensions. This store and beauty salon consisted of a

barber, nine stylists and a nail technician. This store was also profitable and thrived. After eight years,I sold this store and begin a hair and product distribution warehouse in Fremont. Our fourth endeavor has been an expansion to our East San Jose location, in November 2012 we added a salon and day spa, this venture as well has proven positive. We are now offering hairstyling, facials, microdermabrasion and massage. Our mission is to provide quality, affordable products for everyone. We now carry a line of hair called Aalani’s Collection (100% Brazilian Virgin Remy, guaranteed to last one year) for weaving and braiding, which has received rave reviews. The hair is at a below market price, which will make it affordable for many. It is moderately priced at $80.00 for 12”, which normally sells for $120.00 and comes in straight, wavy, body wave or deep wave textures. The hair can be colored, bleached or permed with minimal shedding. The quality of this product meets our standard for excellence here at Nefertiti. Nefertiti special-

izes in supplying superior hair from black to blonde, in textures from curly to straight, in a variety of lengths, and at a reasonable price. We also pride ourselves in providing impeccable service to our customers. We can meet the needs of the professional stylist and consumer. We offer the professional cash-and-carry access in easy access locations. We also appeal to consumers who recognize the utmost importance of maintaining “the look” by using professional beauty products for use at home between salon visits. It is important to me to reciprocate the blessings I have received throughout the years. First and foremost the Lord has sustained me, then I would have to say I have the most supportive and loving family on the earth (especially my brother –Ralph). Along with my customers, employees, hairstylists and staff.

KIRK FRANKLIN

A GOSPEL MUSIC GENIUS... WHAT A BLESSING!

For nearly two decades now, Kirk Franklin has been a multi-platinum-selling purveyor of majestic fusions of gospel and contemporary music, and a mirror of Christian humanity boldly reflecting what one faith walking man can accomplish when he focuses on God and taps deep into the gifts He gives. Franklin is a pioneer in gap-bridging musicianship, uniting audiences across gospel, hip hop, pop and R&B. His irresistible rhythms and rhapsodies have resulted in albums that consistently top both Billboard’s Gospel and Christian charts, as well as ascend triumphantly into the Top 10 of the R&B/ Hip Hop chart. His unprecedented penetration into the mainstream has fortified him to also become a New York Times bestseller author for The Blueprint: A Plan for Living Above Life’s Storms (Gotham/Penguin). Franklin is also the host and executive producer of the gospel talent show “Sunday Best,” the highest-rated gospel program in BET network history now heading into its fourth season. To date, the musical trendsetter has garnered nine GRAMMY® Awards; an American Music Award; 39 Stellar Awards (gospel); 16 Dove Awards (CCM); eight NAACP Image Awards; two BET Music Awards, a Soul Train Award and numerous others. And yet, with all of his success and acclaim - his overflow of awards and accolades - Kirk Franklin remains, at heart, a man who comes from shaky circumstances that could have paralyzed his spiritual growth within his humble familial beginnings. He is never far from that frightened and forlorn young man who didn’t always know which way to turn, which is what makes Franklin one of the most relatable and respected messengers in his field. It is in that humble spirit that he presents his timely 12th album, Hello Fear, (in stores March 22, 2011, on FoYo Soul Entertainment/Verity Records).
