Da Nang has recorded remarkable changes in economic development. Its gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate has been higher than the country’saverage rate. The production of industrial, agricultural, and aquatic products has increased, as has export value. Promising growth in tourism, commerce, and services has also occurred. Da Nang’s economy has historically been dominated by the industry and construction sectors, but this is slowly changing. Fresno gets very little rain per year. Due to this, water is in high demand. With California still struggling with water shortages, this can be a probelm for quite a while.

Design Response: Recycling on-site water is a must for this location and project type. Due to the heavy use of water in locker rooms on site. Water used can be recycled into greywater that can then be (A) used for the vegetation on the roof above, and (B) be even more filtered through the biofiltration within the structure and then later used elsewhere.

HEAT

Fresno’s temperatures range anywhere from the 30s to the 100s. The average temperature is in the high 70s to 80s year-round, with Summer months in particular having excruciatingly hot days. This causes overheating issues. Design Responses: Along with the other passive cooling methods used on site (cross ventilation, night flush, etc.), including a vegitated shading is a strategy that could make a substantial difference. Shaded walls and surfaces can be 20-45˚ cooler than unshaded surfaces. Providing a green roof is another response. This can not only cool the ambient air around surroudning the roof, but it can also increase roof insulation and reduce building energy consumption. Using vertical shading and the use of vertical fins is a great passive shading response to East and West faces. This can minimize or even eliminate the amount of direct sunlight that reaches the inside of the building, therefore reducing glare and overheating. Hot climates such as this one, the use of a double roof can be very useful. Making the covered roof operable can be a huge plus throughout the year as well. Double roofs reduce the amount of direct sunlight on the structure by providing a barrier–the second roof–to take the direct solar radiation instead.

SUMMER SOLSTICE WIND

Although buildings behind the site block much of the strong wind currents, there is still plenty of opportunity to harness the wind from the South East. Design Response: Cross ventilation from the South East transversly through the building. This will cool down occupants during summer months. Filters can be placed at aperatures to capture air pollunants from entering the building.

The sun’s angle during the summer solstice is at around 73˚. Design Response: With solar gain being ideal for this location, pv panels set at 76˚ would be ideal to capture the solar radiation during summer months. Panels can be placed on the roof or facade. Since heat is a serious problem in summer months, shading devices that are automated can also work to harness the sun’s energy.

The sun’s angle during the winter solstice is at around 33˚.

Design Response: may not be as prominant during winter months, having pv panels set at 30˚ would be ideal to capture any solar radiation possible. This can be seen in panels placed on the angular roof and facade.

AIR QUALITY INDEX

The air quality in Fresno, CA is at levels. Ranging from sensative to scores of 55-100 and averaging ap ly 81. Vehicular smog is the major to this, which travels up from the S gets trapped in the Valley’s dip.

Design Response: Using a variety indoor air quality can be filtered a with an indoor green wall. Specific may look like a hydroponic biofilt system.
