Whether you’re a transfer student who’s new to the campus, or an incoming freshman who’s just starting out, we make sure you have the tools and programs you need to succeed. By participating in our programs, you will make new friends, learn about the university, and have a great first year at Virginia Tech!

The New Student Programs staff and student leaders have put together fun and engaging events that help make sure your career at Virginia Tech gets off on the right foot.

We host freshman and transfer orientation in the summer, where our outgoing and friendly student leaders show you the ropes and get you ready for fall semester. Join us for Hokie Camp, where you can get to know your fellow Hokies better by competing in challenges and working together in teams. When you return to campus in August, be sure to check out Hokie Hi, which includes fun events to welcome you to campus.

Inside is some information about the four exciting programs we offer to kick-start your college career and help you find your home at Virginia Tech.

WHAT ARE FRESHMAN AND TRANSFER ORIENTATION? “Getting on Track” is the first stepping stone in the transition from high school to Virginia Tech. During this program, you will have the opportunity to meet current and incoming Tech students, register for fall semester courses, secure your Hokie Passport I.D. card, and much more.

Who should attend?

New Virginia Tech Students — New students become part of the Hokie community by interacting with the student orientation team and other new students as well as faculty and staff. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the resources available to Virginia Tech students. “Getting on Track” will give you information that will help you feel comfortable and confident about returning to Virginia Tech in the fall.

Parents — Sending a student off to college is a transition for the entire family. Although it is essential for new students to make their own decisions, we also understand that new students need the support of their parents during this transition. “Getting on Track” includes informational sessions just for parents to help answer questions and address any concerns they might have.

Parents will have the opportunity to interact with members of the university community throughout the program.

ORIENTATION SIGN-UP Choosing an Orientation Session There are 12 freshman orientation sessions over a three-week period in July — the weeks of July 9, 16, and 23. Sessions available to you are dependent on when advisors from your academic department/ major are present to assist you with registration. As a result, you may have fewer sessions from which to choose. Please choose the available session that fits your July schedule. If you change your major, you must log back in to Hokie SPA and sign up for a new session to ensure you are attending the correct orientation session.

Remember: The deadline for online orientation sign-up is June 30.

STEP ONE: To sign up for orientation, go to the Hokie SPA website (www.hokiespa.vt.edu) and log in using your PID (personal identifier) and password.

If you have not yet created your PID and password, go to www.hokiespa.vt.edu and follow the instructions.

If you are unable to create your PID, please call 540-231-HELP for assistance. (New Student Programs staff members are unable to assist you with creating your PID.) STEP TWO: Select the “Hokie SPA” link, then click on “Information for New Students.”

Changing an Orientation Session Did you already choose a date and your plans have changed? Don’t worry. You can log back into Hokie SPA using your PID and password, click on the “Information for New Students” link, then on “New Student Orientation.” Enter the “Sign-up for New Student Orientation” section again and change your date to a more convenient session, if available. New Student Programs staff members are not able to change your session over the phone or by email.

Student Lodging and Meals Get your first taste of residence hall living during summer orientation. You will stay in a residence hall the night of your orientation session. During this time, you will have an assigned roommate for the night. This is not your assigned residence hall room or roommate for the upcoming semester, but you will experience what it is like to live on the Virginia Tech campus.

During orientation, the cost of your student room and meals is included in your admissions deposit. You do not have to send more money or sign up for the room in advance. But remember, you do have to register for orientation in order to select a session. [ GETTING

Spanish Language Placement Testing All new students who wish to take an upper-level Spanish course in Fall 2012 are required to take a placement test before registering for the class. Registration information, times, and venue for the test during freshman orientation will be posted on the Spanish Program website, www.fll.vt.edu/spanish. Registration is required.

Software Requirement for all Incoming Undergraduate Students All incoming undergraduate students are required to purchase a Microsoft Campus Agreement Software Bundle from Virginia Tech. University Computer Requirement Every incoming undergraduate student is required to own a personal computer with certain specifications. Some departments and colleges require a specific configuration as well. For more information, please visit www.compreq.vt.edu.

Parent Lodging You have three housing options for your visit to Blacksburg during orientation: 1. Residence Hall (On Campus). Register for overnight accommodations in New Hall West. Visit www.housing.vt.edu/conference regarding on-campus accommodations provided by Conference and Guest Services. For more information, call 540-231-5721.

2. The Inn at Virginia Tech. The university’s beautiful new hotel and conference center boasts a full-service restaurant. For more information, call 877-200-3360 or visit the website at www.innatvirginiatech.com.

Parent Meals You also have two options for meals during orientation: 1. Meal Plan. Includes on-campus lunch and dinner on day one and breakfast on day two.

Whether you are staying on campus or off campus, you have the convenient option of purchasing a meal plan. Visit www.housing.vt.edu/conference to register or you can purchase your meal plan when you arrive.

2. D o Your Own Thing. There are plenty of dining options within walking distance of all the orientation activities.

Welcome, new Hokie!

We are excited that you have decided to join the Virginia Tech community. After orientation and before you move in and start your college experience, we invite you to attend Hokie Camp to have fun, make friends, and learn more about life at Virginia Tech.

Hokie Camp is a three-day, two-night event that takes place at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake near the Virginia Tech campus. Students will arrive at Virginia Tech by noon on the first day of their Hokie Camp session. They will travel by bus to Hokie Camp, where they will stay in airconditioned, furnished lodges.

While at Hokie Camp, you will split into large color groups (yellow, red, blue, black, and green) of approximately 70 underclassmen and six upper-class counselors. You will also be in a smaller building group of 12-14 underclassmen. Your group will share a special bond as you get to know each other through low-rope activities, attending sessions on how to get involved on campus, competing for the coveted Hokie Cup, and learning about Hokie traditions, such as Ring Dance, “Old Hokie,” and Hokie Stone.

What?

During your time at Hokie Camp, you have the opportunity to participate with your color group in a low-ropes course, field games, campfires, a cook-out, and a dance party. In your free time, you can choose to canoe, climb the rock wall, play mini golf, or go swimming.

The W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Roanoke, Va., and nestled neatly along the shores of a beautiful lake. Students at Hokie Camp will stay in air-conditioned housing in one of six centrally located lodges. Each room sleeps four to six and has community restrooms.

Cost?

Hokie Camp costs $195. This cost covers transportation to and from Virginia Tech to Smith Mountain Lake, lodging, meals, and a Hokie Camp T-shirt.

Bring?

No need to bring much! Bring comfortable clothes for being outdoors, personal hygiene products, and a towel and soap for showering. Make sure you bring comfortable closed-toe shoes.

HOKIE HI Hokie Hi is a great tradition at Virginia Tech—it’s your time to get acquainted with your new home, to make new friends as you meet other new Hokies, and to explore all the exciting ways to learn, in and outside of class. Hokie Hi offers lots of events for you to choose from during the first eight weeks of the fall semester.

From the Welcome Back Picnic in Lane Stadium to the Gobblerfest fair on the Drillfield, Hokie Hi is packed with fun and exciting events. There are lots of options to choose from, all with the goal of helping you meet other Hokies and get to know your new surroundings.

Hokie Hi events range from large university-wide programs, to smaller club/organization-specific programs, to academic major and college welcome events, to residence hall socials.

Club/organization events will give you the chance to explore ways to get involved on campus. Student clubs at Virginia Tech ofer religious, service-based, academic, sports, and performing arts events for all students. Get out and explore ways to get involved at your new home!

Hokie Hi extends into the fall semester with events that bring essential campus resources and fun social activities to the residence hall communities, providing skills and information you can use to succeed during your college career and beyond.

TRANSPORTATION + PARKING Directions from I-81 Take exit 118B. Use the lane marked Rt. 460 West toward Blacksburg. Continue on the bypass, following signs marked 460 West toward Blacksburg and Bluefield, W.Va. As you approach Blacksburg, stay on the 460 bypass, following the signs toward Virginia Tech. Make a right turn at the stoplight onto Southgate Drive. Follow Southgate Drive for .7 mile.

The orientation parking lot will be at the intersection of Southgate Drive and Spring Road. For more information, check out www.vt.edu/where_we_are/maps/directions.html.

Freshman and Transfer Orientation Parking Parking will be in the Lane Stadium lot (football stadium) on the corner of Southgate Drive and Spring Road. There will be signs as you approach campus with directional arrows to this parking area.

You will receive your parking pass for orientation as you enter the assigned parking lot. The parking pass issued on earlier visits by the Admissions Office is not valid for orientation. You will need to clearly display your parking pass in your vehicle at all times during your orientation session.

Freshman and Transfer Orientation Shuttle Service to Check-In The Blacksburg Transit will provide shuttle service starting at 7:30 a.m. from the Lane Stadium parking lot to Squires Student Center.
