Using Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, presentation boards and portfolio has been made possible. I learned how to re-create image in order to fit my project needs, choose the right color scheme for portfolio, and much more. With this skill I can aesthetically buff my presentation boards or even create professional business card.

Using a 3D model program called Sketchup, made by Google, and with a collaboration program called IRender, we learned how to take a 2D drawings from various programs and import it into Sketchup to create a 3D model. Then with service from IRender we can render 3D models and make it look more realistic and ascetically pleasing.

As part of our professional practice we are assigned my make business cards and posters for our own benefit, to showcase our capability and creativity, we had to and impress not only our instructors but employers from firms that we may be interested to work for. We invited these employers with the help of NAIT set on a specific day to display our work.

RENDERINGS As I have been introduced to rendering programs such as Irender, I had the opportunity to learn the rendering capabilities of Autodesk Revit. I had to learn to render my commercial project building, by using the Revit rendering function, I able to control the time of day it was and the wattage of lighting.

COMPETITION In my 2nd year at Nait, we had the opportunity to compete with our classmates for designing a bank for the Canadian Western Bank. We had to tons of research to do; such as site location, history, pedestrian pathways, vehicular pathways, and much more, this taught us to get familiar with the site and build from what you feel and learn the history behind it.

The process after site analysis is to layout the floor plan. I had to work with my inspiration from my 3D model I made by hand because of what I felt when I visited the site and what the Canadian Western Bank message statement was. Using my inspiration I laid out a rough draft of what the floor plan I visualized. This was done through Adobe Illustrator, using different strokes, colors and line tools, I was able to put what I had in mind on paper, which gave me a very good idea of how my building will be shaped and where all the components will be located.

After creating the floor plans and converting the files to Google Sketchup, I was able to create a 3D model of the bank. Creating both interior and exterior finishes, I can place many components such as desk, chairs, entourage and much more, to create a realistic view. After creating these views, I was able to create renderings of these views with Irender, using the setting; artificial lighting and creating different materials with walls and flooring, I can create aesthetically pleasing image that represent the bank,

Finally after using AutoCad to create my floor plans, Google Sketchup for the 3D models, Irender for my images, and Adobe Photoshop for my finishes on my floor plan. I am finally able to put all of my work into one file to create my presentation boards. I used Adobe Illustrator to do so; I was easily able to bring all of my work to one central location edit my images to enhance the quality and viewing pleasure. But if images needed to be edited on a different program, it can be easily done because all the images that was brought in, is linked together and any changes that were made, it is automatically updated in Adobe Illustrator.

The majority of my time at NAIT was working with AutoCad, in our first year we were given the Smith’s residence to work with, following a guideline booklet and translating them into AutoCad. Prior to drawing these floor plans we were instructed to learn the basics of AutoCad. Simply learning how to draw a line, polyline, circle, rectangle and so forth. Learning all the functions that AutoCad had to offer such as the layer system, annotation system, and how paper space worked. With this knowledge we are able to create floor plans and convert it to PDF files and print it off to any size of paper that is required, or simply converting AutoCad files to either Revit or Google Sketchup for other purposes.

After learning the fundamental of AutoCad and being comfortable with the program, I learned how to make simple wall sections and details, in the process of learning the components of these walls, I picked up some efficient ways to work faster and manage my time efficiently. We worked on some details for our knowledge that we can use in the real world and other times to evaluate our time efficiently when using AutoCad.

NAIT DORMITORY

The biggest project that took the majority of time during my second year of NAIT was to design a dormitory, this comprised of 10+ set of drawings that contains of floor plans, ceiling plans, elevation, wall sections, building sections, and much more, to teach us the amount of plans that was needed to build a building. These drawings had to be done in a timely matter, which taught us time management because we had other projects to work on too.

RESIDENCE PROJECT

AUTODESK REVIT

The other Autodesk program that I got familiarized is Revit. In my first year of NAIT we had to design a house, the intention was to learn the function of Revit and how it works. I had to learn the basics of Revit such as; making a wall, floor, ceiling system, and so on. The first project was a residential project.

After getting a good idea of how Revit worked, in my second year of NAIT we moved onto a little more difficult task, the commercial project. We were given a floor plan and basically had to follow that floor plan to the word, figuring out the dimension of walls, creating new walls with different sweeps and profiles. In addition to creating walls we had to create different curtain walls which contained different sizes of spandrel panels. Creating a joist and beam system was also required in the project.
