What To Know About Armadillo Control Where You Live Given that they don't have any natural enemies, armadillos are one wild animal that you see more and more often in neighborhoods. The animals were once mainly in Texas but have recently spread to areas of the Midwest, East Coast and the South. If you have issues with armadillos making your yard their new home, use a high quality organic repellent as a good means of controlling the armadillos. They aren't hard to spot given that they have armor-like skin that is rather unique. You can find them ranging in size from small to medium. Armadillos are quick even though they have short legs. They are likely to jump straight into the air if they're caught off guard by something, like a passing car for instance. To enjoy the safety of your yard, the armadillo will do anything to work through different challenges. They're able to swallow a bunch of air to blow up their stomach to 2 times its normal size. This buoyancy allows them to float so they are able to swim across a variety of ditches and narrow creeks. The exact environment that they're searching for may just happen to be your yard. The armadillo has 3 to 5 toes that have heavy claws found on their front feet. They like to start digging in your lawns or in your superbly landscaped flower beds. Many homeowners are actually surprised to discover that they’ve dug near their natural gas lines, underneath a concrete patio or under their home’s foundation. When they do this, they weaken the home's structure and if you're not able to get rid of them, they are able to cause costly and extensive damage. Armadillos will dig to find their source of food which includes grubs and earthworms, and to find some type of burrow to stay in. The burrows are normally not shared among other adult armadillos. If a pregnant one is living in your yard it will usually have four babies, which in turn may also make their homes on your property. Doctors within the last couple years have begun telling people to steer clear of the armadillos and under no circumstances try to handle them. These animals are the only ones other than humans that can carry leprosy, and there is growing evidence that they will be able to transmit it to people. Many doctors are telling their patients not to eat armadillo or touch and handle anything made out of them. The analysis is ongoing but doctors say it is better to be cautious around the animals. If leprosy is in its early stages it can be easily treated. It might be a good idea to contact a wildlife trapping expert if you are dealing with just one armadillo to have it removed and relocated to a better location. You can also buy an environmentally friendly repellent, all on your own that will keep the animals away from your yard. There are many common things that you have around your home that could irritate the animals and keep them away including ammonia, moth balls, castor oil, cayenne pepper and Epson salts. You can often find recipes on how to mix various ingredients together with other household items for example liquid soap detergent and even playground sand. You'll want to be very careful when making your own repellent. You'll want to make sure the ingredients that you're mixing together will be safe for your kids and pets. Also, wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and gloves as some ingredients may irritate the skin. No matter what kind of armadillo control plan you follow, you'll want to start it as soon as you notice any of the animals trying to make a home on your property.
