I am pleased to be a part of this newsletter that is an endeavor to showcase the activities of the clubs in the area.
FROM THE EDITOR
Believe me, we are going to have more fun as we build more confidence speaking in front of an audience, we overcome our fear of public speaking and as we become more comfortable speaking extemporaneously. You can ask me how? The answer is by doing more: sign up for roles, attend meetings regularly, participate in contests, take on more leadership roles, mentor new members, Welcome you all for the “Area Tidings”- volunteer more.

I would like to conclude by saying “This is your journey and the Area 36 Toastmasters family is here to walk with you. Enjoy your journey!”

From the Area Director’s Desk As we transit through the third quarter of the term 2016-17, I realize that this is my favorite time of the year. Not only does it mark the beginning of spring, “A leader is one who trees laden with shiny green leaves, knows the way, goes colorful flowers blooming and just the the way, and shows the right weather – not too cold and not way. “ John C. Maxwell too hot; rather, it is also the contest season in Kuwait, when we see all clubs in a frenzy, contestants coming up with one wonderful speech after the other and not to forget the overworked judges! But this is also an excellent time to step back and examine our goals before the last lap of the race to achieve those goals begins. I, however, am pleased and extremely satisfied to note that the clubs in Area 36 are already seeing the positive results of their well-thought-of club success plans, which are crucial to timely achievement of goals. All the clubs have completed their contests well in time, giving sufficient time to their representatives for preparation for Area 36 contests, scheduled for 31st March, 2017. All the clubs are on track with their plans to achieve the distinguished club status. Attending the regular meetings of the clubs in the Area during my term has been a sheer pleasure, as I track their members’ personal development. The Area saw a medley of wonderful events during the year till now, CrackMe – a corporate quiz conducted at Area level as a membership drive, ‘Darren in Kuwait’ – an event successfully organized by Desert Pioneers TM club, an outdoor meeting organized by Durrar TM club, membership drive meetings organized by Kuwait Challengers TM Club at a venue different from their regular one, a variety of meetings by Al Bader Anchors TM Club- the only corporate club in the Area, several joint meetings of the clubs, Clubs’ anniversaries, and last but not the least - the welcome addition of a new club to the Area – ICS Expressions TM Club. As we sit back and relish these achievements, with another three months to build on them, I encourage all of you to evaluate the progress you have made, in your personal goals and club goals, and then create a plan for staying on track. I would be happy to see everyone achieve successes, big or small, so don't wait until the last month to focus on your goals. Do remember what Michael Jordan said, “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” This first edition of our Area newsletter ‘Area Tidings’ is a delightful result of successful teamwork. I am proud of Area 36, its zesty clubs and enthusiastic members, for that’s what we are - a “TEAM”. - ALKA KUMRA

The organizational framework of Toastmasters International provides an With 2016 gone, it’s a great time to look opportunity to every member to take up back at this remarkable year, full of fun and the leadership role, along with improving great achievements. I’m immensely proud communication skills and to work as a team of the work that you, your fellow members, member, which in turn fosters leadership club leaders and district leaders are doing. qualities and enhances comradeship. In first half of the year, we have successfully conducted open houses, membership drives, judges training and COT. We are one of the very few divisions in entire district 20, having credit of chartering a new club in each of four areas in Division I. Once again credit goes to all fellow members and leaders at both club and area level. As we start preparing for contest season, I urge each one of you to participate in contests wholeheartedly, be it as contestants, role players or judges. I can assure you that every participation in a toastmaster event is full of learning and enjoyment. I could not be more excited about what 2017 will bring to all of us, and for the opportunity to work with you to make it happen. -ANUP
From my experience, I can tell you that taking up only one leadership role or to work in only one project at a time is ideal, as it will help us to allocate our time effectively to achieve our main goal (communication) and for serving the fellow members. Hence, every member at some point during their Toastmasters journey must take up a leadership role. In Area 36, we have witnessed ordinary clubs and Toastmasters transforming into vibrant clubs and charismatic leaders. I was fortunate to handover the baton of Area Directorship to a leader like TM Alka Kumra, Let’s applaud Toastmasters International because we cannot exist as Toastmasters without the existence of the organization. Wishing Area 36 Toastmasters all success for achieving their goals.

As President, I have had the great privilege of working with a superior team of officers. Our club membership suffered when it changed from a corporate club to a private one. To improve our membership, we have been taking various steps, the last being involving staff of Al Mulla Insurance Brokerage and Al Mulla Exchange. I would like to extend a hearty welcome to these new members and say’ “Welcome onboard the club and Area 36!

“If it doesn’t challenge you it won’t change you.”
“No! Sorry I am not interested.” Those were the words that came out from my mouth when someone introduced toastmasters to me What I had in my mind was that it was just a waste of time and would in no way help me to improve. Out of curiosity, I started to do some research and asked some colleagues who were already part of it. “What is toastmasters all about?” All the answers were same “Toastmasters is good and it will help you to improve.” Even though I wasn’t keen, I decided to attend one meeting to have a close look at what was happening there. I felt it was fun and challenging. I was reminded of my favorite quote “If it doesn’t challenge you; it won’t change you” and so it happened that I started attending their meetings regularly, until one day I decided to be part of ABATM Club. When I decided to join toastmasters, my only goal initially was to improve my communication skills, but slowly it also boosted my self-confidence level, when I took up leadership roles. Lastly, my gratitude to all the Members and ExCom of ABATM for the opportunity and trust they had given me to serve them as their Club President.

Effective communication accounts for the success of one’s career especially teachers. When I heard of toastmasters, I felt it was a grand program to develop greater interpersonal and communication skills and leadership skills. With the view to winning over others and to master the tactics of motivating people and to foster efficiency in group and team work, senior Toastmasters of Kuwait came over for a demonstration meeting in December 2016 and within a couple of days, the school staff showed enthusiastic response, resulting in the the Toastmasters club getting chartered on 1st January 2017. We baptized it as ‘ICS EXPRESSIONS’ having 41 charter members. The club meets every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month between 10.00 am to 12.00 noon. Effective interaction plays crucial role in professionalizing oneself and thereby avoiding career risk. The members of staff having joined this TM club have taken a step in the right direction.
