Docklands, traditional lands of the Woiwurrung (Wurundjeri) and Boonwurrung tribes of the Kulin Nation, was vital for its rich food and water sources from the Yarra River - known as Birrarung Industrialisation and the 1850s gold rush led to the creation of Victoria Dock (Harbour)
By 1860, Docklands was home to the West Melbourne gas works, railway industry, an explosives magazine and pottery works Abattoirs, dealers in animal skins and hides, and tanneries also set up in the area.
Construction of Victoria Dock commenced in the late 1880s and was completed in 1892, transforming the area into Melbourne's primary port. For decades, the docks thrived with activity. 1861 recorded 30,000 shipping crew members from 1,778 vessels arriving in Victoria's ports. Once these sailors received their pay, they were lured to the surrounding areas of West Melbourne, renown for its seedy underbelly of gambling halls and brothels
Today, Docklands blends its industrial heritage with modern architecture, featuring skyscrapers and waterfront promenades as a vibrant part of Melbourne's landscape
