The Yarra

By Marianne We at Voyager are lucky to live by the Yarra River. The Yarra River flows 242 kms from its source on Mt Baw Baw in the Yarra Ranges National Park - all the way to Port Phillip Bay. Melbourne was established in 1835 at the lower stretches of the Yarra. More than one third of Victoria’s population lives in the Yarra catchment which spans approximately 4,000 kms2. The Yarra is often referred too as the “upside down river“ because of its brown colour. This brown muddy colour is caused by clay soil which breaks up into tiny particles and dissipates through to the whole of the river. The river once had clear water but during the industrial revolution in the 1800s, high levels of land clearing and development caused these microscopic clay particles to enter the water, making it the colour it is today. Originally called Birrarung for ‘a place of mists and shadows’, our river became known as the Yarra in the 1830s after a surveyor misheard local Aboriginal people saying ”Yarro Yarro”, meaning ‘it flows’.
By Joey Remember the late 80s when you could get cash for cans and bottles? Even Pat Cash was involved with a series of TV ads. Every enthusiastic kid was scouring the neighbourhood to cash in empty bottles and cans for a bag of mixed lollies. But in the 90s, the 10-cent refund disappeared into thin air. 1 November 2023 signalled a return for Victoria’s container deposit scheme CDS VIC which rewards Victorians with a 10-cent refund for every eligible can, carton and bottle they return. Intended to transform Victoria’s waste and recycling system, CDS VIC will turn used drink containers into new, recycled products. The aim is for better recycling with less waste and new jobs, as well as economic opportunities across Victoria for charities, community groups, environmental organisations, sports and educational organisations to raise funds for a cleaner, greener state.
