For this issue of Vow Bride, we decided to shift our focus just a little and explore some of the first things a couple experiences once their engagement goes viral. This life-changing moment gets the wedding party started; and it’s usually sealed with a kiss and a ring. The hunt for sparkle and shine lead us to some of the most beautiful jewels in “Brilliantly Betrothed.” Couples quickly discover that there’s no time to loose when it comes to setting a date, finding the perfect venue and getting a wedding plan organized and in motion. Our “Pros in the Know” share some valuable advice for cutting to the chase and making important decisions. Then it’s time to capture the moment in your Save the Date photo. “Well Engaged” offers great ideas from leading photographers on how to make your first official photo session together a memorable one. We wouldn’t be the magazine we are if we didn’t showcase some of the dreamiest gowns seen on the runway. Our editorial photo shoot at Dover Hall in Richmond offers luxurious glimpses of

beautiful designs– and all the details that make a bride so regal in “Crowns & Gowns.” For many brides, so much of the experience feels like a fairy tale and our bridal fashion editorial “Bewitching Beauty” gives just a hint of that at the enchanted Hermitage Museum. Before the big day, it’s a host of celebrations that build up the excitement; and we have you dressed for them all in “Party Time.” Couples tying the knot have so many reasons to feel excited. They will share milestones, merge their styles and re-define their taste while creating their first home. In “Happily Ever,” discover some great ideas for creating your nest and enjoying the process together. Most importantly, celebrate your engagement wisely. It’s easy to get caught up in the details of the day; to be discouraged by certain caveats in the planning process; and to allow the little things you can’t control–like the weather– dampen your spirits. Be inspired by the latest ideas you see and enthused by the wonderful professionals guiding you along the way. There’s no better time to be engaged than now.

WHITE ALBUM

Sonali Chaturvedi + Jason Mann APRIL 30, 2016 n MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART, VIRGINIA BEACH PHOTOS BY NOEL DEL PILAR

This fairy tale wedding was a dream come true for Sonali and Jason who felt like a ‘King and Queen for the big day.’ The venue was transformed into a royal palace for the traditional Indian wedding ceremony. Special touches included Puerto Rican inspired exotic flowers, fuchsia, purple and gold embellishments, a luxurious Mandap and lounge areas and even a horse and carriage for their first ride as husband and wife. The bride wore a traditional Indian Lehenga covered with gold sequins, shimmering embellishments, and rich embroidery, weighing close to 25 pounds! Wedding advice from the couple? “Never settle.” Their right-out-of-a-movie wedding set the scene for a happily ever after. 14 vowbride.com

WHITE ALBUM

Brittany Folck + Rocky Parr

MAY 7, 2016 n LESNER INN, VIRGINIA BEACH n PHOTOS BY ECHARD WHEELER PHOTOGRAPHY Brittany and Rocky planned for a romantic and fun wedding, and that’s just what they got. The couple met in high school, but didn’t have their first date until years after college. They knew then it was just meant to be. Both Virginia Beach natives, they wanted to get married on the water, so the Lesner Inn provided the perfect backdrop. Brittany chose a neutral color palette of pinks, ivory and champagne with stunning roses, calla lilies, dusty miller and babies breath. The bride wore an elegant strapless Hayley Paige gown, and while the bridesmaids dresses matched her ethereal feel, they were shades of sea foam. Married by a good friend, Brittany and Rocky felt “less is more” and cut a few traditional wedding aspects and got the guests on the dance floor all night. They left in a shower of bubbles and drove off in a white 1961 Cadillac.

Michelle Burrus + Brooks Bradley MAY 7, 2016 PRINCESS ANNE COUNTRY CLUB, VIRGINIA BEACH PHOTOS BY ELEISE THEUER PHOTOGRAPHY

From the flamingo cocktail stirrers and light up headband favors, to the shark cake and zebra balloons, nothing was typical at Michelle and Brook’s ‘Katy Perry’ inspired wedding. The couple, who are both from Virginia Beach met in New York City through the bride’s sister. Michelle grew up going to the Princess Anne Country Club, so it was fitting their wedding would be there as well. The bride handcrafted her own bubblegum pink sweetheart gown with a matching bow hair piece – a total surprise to the groom. Flower arrangements and centerpieces consisted of peonies, hydrangea, roses, tulips and carnations– and those unforgettable Gray Malin-inspired balloons. An explosion of fun and happiness filled the evening. And for this couple, the party is just beginning. 22 vowbride.com

Chantavia and Christopher couldn’t imagine having their black-tie wedding anywhere else than the exquisite Chrysler Museum of Art. The couple wanted their big day to be as beautiful and classic as a red rose. Chantavia wore a Justin Alexander satin bodice ball gown with finished horsehair trim and her bridesmaids wore elegant, satin apple red dresses. Special touches to the evening included a red rose canopy at the alter, freshly scented rose favors and a surprise serenade performance from Christopher to his stunning bride. What better way to herald an engagement announcement than the flash of brilliance on your ring finger. When proposing a life shared together, this band signifies heartfelt acceptance and commitment so let it shine with possibilities. Choosing the ring is just the start of many decisions you will make together as you plan your upcoming nuptials.

54 vowbride.com

Crucial to finding the perfect ring is defining your budget and connecting with a jewelry store that can accommodate it while offering the taste level that meets your standards. Like every relationship you’re establishing, the one with your jeweler is very important when exploring the four C’s that influence finding the perfect ring: Carat. Cut. Color. Clarity. And let’s not forget the Metal that defines your setting.

PROS IN THE KNOW

It all begins with the engagement. So where do you start and who’s going to hold your hand? Or better yet, design the ring for that finger? Our talented wedding community is ripe with professionals ready to guide you. Out of the gate, it’s the jeweler, the venue coordinator, and the event planner that get your wedding party started. STORY BY KIM WADSWORTH

THE RING LEADER

PHIL RALPH, OWNER | MADISON JEWELERS MADISONJEWELERS.COM

Q} The Ring is the first thing that gets a wedding announcement

started. Should couples “shop” a bit first; or is it acceptable to “pick and present?”

A} Today’s customers and their tastes are like diamonds themselves: very

diversified and unique. If the recipient likes surprises, “pick and present” is a good way to go. If something as uniquely different as they are is desired, then customizing the ring together makes for a great start to a “date night.” Q} As a jewelry expert, what is the first thing a couple should consider when choosing this ultimate token of love?

A} Consider the true “Quality and Value” of the engagement ring you’re

hoping to buy. When purchasing a ring, determine a budget, stay within or below it, and never purchase something that is beyond your means. Q} Couples traditionally present each other with a gift on the wedding day. What are some favorite choices you recommend?

A} Two customer favorites are our fashion stackable collection for women; and our selection of pre-owned Rolex watches, for men and women.

Q} Are most engagement rings purchased out of the case or custom designed?

A} Although we carry a great selection of engagement settings, millennial couples getting engaged now prefer custom designing the ring that fits

their lifestyle. With 3D CAD innovations, we are able to take a photograph from a cell phone and create that special ring for them within a few weeks. A} While fancy shaped diamonds are making a comeback, round is still the most popular and versatile when it comes to finding a setting to

accentuate that center stone. Gold and platinum are the most requested metals but we’re seeing yellow and rose gold with custom rings as well.

Q} The Hilton is synonymous with the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. What are some of the exciting opportunities that couples can experience when they book their wedding at your venue? A} Aside from having one of the only oceanfront ballrooms, the most important amenity is our staff. From planning to execution, the impeccable and detail oriented service that you receive at the Hilton Oceanfront is one of a kind. We offer couples and their guests a variety of fun activities for the wedding weekend, all in one location.

Q} Hosting out-of-town guests and securing their lodgings is a huge undertaking. What advice do you offer brides choosing a venue and beginning the planning process? A} The best advice is to plan ahead. Too often, lodging is an afterthought and that’s where the challenge for couple’s planning a wedding begins. Whether you are getting married in the off season; or peak summer months, your guests will need a place to stay so make certain to secure a block of guest rooms at the same time you’re securing your venue. Q} Themed “Welcome Bags” from the bride’s family are a standard gift waiting for weary guests. What would you include in bags that reflected the taste and feel of the city you cater to so well? A} A beer from one a local brewery; a mini bottle of vodka from our local distillery; and in the near future, bourbon distilled onsite from our sister property, the historic Cavalier Hotel. Beach Crunch Mix from Taste; a chocolate Neptune from Schakolad Chocolate Factory; and a bag of popcorn from Jody’s Popcorn. I would also compile a personal list of favorite local shops and eateries.

DON MONTEAUX

Q} Share one of the most amazing moments you’ve seen at a Hilton wedding. A} We had a couple that wanted their wedding on a Thursday so they were able to have their intimate reception at the rooftop Sky Bar with it’s panoramic ocean views. The bride was pregnant with their first child and her fiance was a Navy Seal deployed throughout most of the planning. The bride wanted guests to know they were her extended family so a special touch became obvious to during the planning. When it was time to toast and cut the cake, trays of champagne were passed out in both pink and blue flutes. Guests voted on what they thought the sex of the baby would be based on the color flute they selected. The cake was cut revealing a very blue slice of cake! At that moment, an F-18 Navy jet flew by that the squadron who attended had arranged to fly over as their toast to the couple, while working with me to have it all timed perfectly.

Q} What is the first thing a newly engaged couple should do? A} Pick a number! Everything in the wedding planning experience is based on the total number of guests you plan to entertain. Deciding your budget, ceremony location, reception venue, menu and more are ultimately predicated on your guest count. Q} Can you briefly explain the difference between an event planner and a day of coordinator. Which does a bride need more? A} Every couple needs a Day of Coordinator! This professional is in charge of all the days’ details: wedding vendors, schedules, timeline and more. If a couple has little spare time and needs help scheduling appointments, booking wedding service providers and staying organized, consider a Full Service Wedding Planner to be by your side. Q} What is your approach to getting a couple on an organized track; and how far ahead in planning time do they need to make their wedding event a success? A} Starting at least one year in advance is crucial. The further out you are from your big day, the more likely you’ll get all of your “first picks.” Compiling the wedding details into one document that can be regularly updated and shared with clients is my ‘tried and true’ method. Q} Are there any wedding recommendations that you always try to encourage brides to include in their day? A} Besides a Day of Coordinator, plan to book your photographer and videographer for at least 8-10 hours. There isn’t any part of your special day you won’t want documented– these are images for a lifetime. Destination makeup and hair are also essential to keep your ladies relaxed and together. Q} What is one of the biggest challenges you’re faced when coordinating a wedding? A} Matching budgets to expectations! There are many creative solutions that experienced planners can work out to realize a wedding vision. Make a list of “Must Haves” vs. “Wish List.” Subtract the must haves from your budget and now you know what’s left for special extras.

STORY BY KIM WADSWORTH  PHOTOGRAPHY BY HARRY GERWIEN

BEDROOM COMFORT BEGINS WITH WHITE SHEETS, SOFT NEUTRALS AND PERSONAL TOUCHES OF WHIMSY FROM SERENDIP.

Your home is where you’ll share many big moments in your life. It is your sanctuary, your office, your party space, your intimate getaway. You want it to be a reflection of you both with old and new furnishings purchased together. When you’re trying to combine tastes and not offend your partner, it’s best to donate or give items away before they even get in the door. Claus Ihlemann and Robert Roman, owners of Decorum Furniture suggest packing away memorabilia that doesn’t need to be part of the decor. “Try to make merging items a happy process, like a first date. Select pieces that really look good together and make it all about ‘Ours.’ If there is an abundance of household items, it might be wise to bring in a Design Consultant.” Couples merging households today are faced with a new set of 76 vowbride.com

dynamics. Nearlyweds are usually older; already have apartments filled with furniture and accessories; and are comfortable with a certain style. How can they merge their tastes and belongings in a way that doesn’t offend the other? For Karen Husselbee, who has been married three years, merging tastes and furnishings later in life was a challenge. “ You quickly realize the value of closets, wall space, the attic and the garage. When my husband can’t find something that did not work with our combined styles, I jokingly remind him that it is in either the laundry room, the attic or the CHKD Thrift Store!” Once the mutual purge has amicably occurred, what is a good color palette and vibe that embraces both parties? According to Paxton Buckingham, lead in-home stylist at West Elm at Town Center, setting

the style of a home should start with neutrals and contrasting elements in layers. “When merging tastes, it’s about planning your life together. Start with a calm look and add a mix of textures and hand crafted looks for a Modern Global feel.” Paxton believes everyone wants their home space to look and feel good. “It becomes a ‘Yours, Mine, Ours’ kind of moment where anything can be stylish as long as it’s arranged well.” After you agree on a style concept, Claus and Robert suggest grabbing a stack of shelter magazines, a cup of coffee and browsing through pages, tearing out anything that represents what each likes. Armed with this information, head to your favorite home store where a design staff is available to help you complete your decor. Finally, when setting up a bridal registry, it’s important to review the inventory of both households and determine what’s needed to fill gaps. Starting everything in white, from sheets to plates, allows your respective tastes to slip right in. Notes Laura Slaymaker, owner of Serendip, no matter whether you’re a young couple or a second time around couple, create a registry of statement pieces that reflect your combined styles. “A colorful unique salad plate or bowl; or an extraordinary platter to compliment your existing dishes is perfect. So many registrants haven’t had fine china and crystal and are ready to appreciate it now.” Laura also recommends anything personalized from monogrammed towels, to simple touches like soaps. Create that ‘Happy Marriage’ of taste and style together. It’s one of the many exciting parts of your new journey.

engaged

Your proposal planning was a success. And now the love story begins. You’re engaged and it’s time to start planning the details of your big day. From the wedding professionals you hire to the pre-wedding events, there are more than enough milestones to check off your list. Once you’ve selected the wedding date, picked your venue and booked a photographer, your engagement session should be closer to the top of your “to do list” than you think.

ECHARD WHEELER

That being said, should you wear more than one look for your session? Pinterest and your favorite bridal blogs would suggest lots of choices but Echard Wheeler, a Virginia Beach photographer for close to 20 years, has more realistic thoughts. “I always think couples should wear outfits they’re comfortable in. You want to feel like yourself during the shoot. My motto is ‘mesh but don’t match.’ You want to be the focal point of the photographer, not your outfit.”

80 vowbride.com

You’ve reserved your shoot date so what location or venue choice should you consider and is it necessary to have a theme or relationship to the location? You certainly want to choose a spot that you love as a couple. Photographer Keith Cephus, who has done many engagement shoots in his career notes, “I love themed locations for engagement sessions. It gives couples a special identity and adds flair and style to the session. Even something as simple as college themed jerseys worn on the campus of where a couple met is a popular idea. Always bring at least two looks so there’s some variety to choose from.”

KEITH CEPHUS DAVID SCHWARTZ

Why is an engagement session important? It’s the perfect opportunity to work with your photographer for the first time and test some of those hair and makeup ideas you’ve been pinning. So when should you schedule your engagement session? According to David Schwartz of David Schwartz Photography, “Couples should book their engagement session as soon as possible. It allows them to get better acquainted with the photographer, to get comfortable in front of his camera and if it’s six months out or more, it gives them time to use an image for their Save the Date cards.” vowbride.com 81

EYECAPTURES PHOTOGRAPHY When booking your photographer, review all packages carefully and find out which ones include this important first session together. For Bryan Brough of EyeCaptures Photography, it’s an essential part of establishing a relationship between a couple and their photographer. “An engagement session is included in all of my packages. I want to get to know my couples, experience how they are in front of the camera and get to know their personalities a little without a camera in their face. Photographing them at a location close to their hearts with all the details they want to include is a great introduction to have prior to the wedding day.”

BRANDILYNN AINES PHOTOGRAPHY

You’re taking advantage of the trial time with your photographer, so why not schedule a preview consultation with your beauty professionals to see how your look translates in photos. Photographer Brandilynn Aines said it best. “Who doesn’t want to be pampered for a day? Having your hair and makeup done before engagements gives much more confidence during the shoot”. She also feels the engagement session is a great time to show off your four-legged family member. “I’m big on adventure and I love it when my couples are just being themselves with their pet. It’s authentic moments like that which fuel my soul.”

Dr. Kaado’s Mediterranean Facial formulated to hydrate and tighten the skin.

&

TRIED TRUE STORY BY KIM WADSWORTH, FASHION AND BEAUTY EDITOR

Years ago, brides only opted for day of makeup and hair; a day before mani-pedi; and if they remembered, a quick razor shave of their legs and underarms the morning of the wedding. Today, thanks to paparazzistyle professional photos and video on the wedding day, brides are leaving no room for beauty error and going to new lengths to look forever beautiful. I decided to experience several beauty protocols to understand what’s involved in getting ready for the big day. GET YOUR GLO ON Never fond of my teeth color, I asked bride-to-be Jennifer Clauss, a dental hygienist at Dr. Christopher King in Virginia Beach, how she had such sparkly white teeth. “While whitening strips are good for touch ups, there’s nothing like getting a high dose of a bleaching product called GLO.” In the chair I jumped to get a taste of the GLO Science Professional Procedure which promises whiter teeth with one 32 minute in-office session ($249.) Jennifer thoroughly cleaned and buffed my teeth; then applied the 30% bleach solution. I bit into a heat-plus-light closed mouthpiece and waited while the “blue light” did it’s magic in several administered intervals. The result: my teeth were easily 4-5 shades whiter and with intermittent whitening strip use, I can keep it up. For an additional $199. there’s a GLO Take-Home Whitening Device with ten 10% bleach vials for touch ups; or a box of ten Professional Strips for $40. implantkingdds.com PRESS THE REFRESH BUTTON I have always been all about skin protocols, facials and certain injectibles. At Kaado MD Aesthetics and Anti-Aging in Virginia Beach, Dr. Kaado takes it all to a new level. Using flowers and herbs foraged from the northern part of Lebanon, he’s created a Mediterranean Facial using the eponymous products formulated in house to hydrate and tighten the skin. Layering them step by step, he gave my weary moisture-bereft skin a fresh look that was not only rejuvenated but reflected a much-needed glow. “We suggest starting a skin regimen for brides at

least 3 months prior to the wedding and stepping it up the final month.” Other procedures include MesoBotox to reduce sweat while smoothing and tightening the skin; as well as MicroNeedling, where your own blood and plasm are spun and injected into problem areas like acne scars to minimize pitting and rejuvenate the skin. Dr. Kaado welcomes grooms to experience the “Brotox” boost and other protocols to get them aisle-ready as well. kaadomd.com STRIPPED DOWN BARE I’m always intrigued that specialists like Michelle Gentry, esthetician and owner of BareSkin Beautique in Virginia Beach are willing to go places most don’t want to go to remove unwanted facial and body hair. From brows and upper lips; to underarms and bikini/brazilians, she’s a wiz. I see so many brides not shaving close enough for their strapless gown moment; and unprepared to wear a bikini for their St. Bart’s honeymoon. I decided armpits and a brazilian were the two I should experience. I was amazed at the speed, lack of pain and virtually little redness after waxing. Admittingly, I did a “modified brazilian” but I put my finished waxing experience to the test in a bathing suit and felt remarkably “light and hairless.” barebeautique@yahoo.com JUST ADD VOLUME Extensions are the new “must have” for anyone with thin or fine hair; or just needing that extra volume for your wedding day hairstyle. I fell in love with the look of extensions and discovered TEAM Bridal Extensions in Santa Barbara, California. They are the beauty specialists for renown photographer Jose Villa and I loved how they styled brides. Before buying the all-in-one 100% human hair clip-in, I looked at the colors on line. I wasn’t sure which blonde to choose so I ordered two swatches $7. each. Once I found my match, I ordered it ($298.) I curled my hair, parted it in the back ear to ear, clipped and snapped the extension in. I decided to test it out on our models ( page 36 + page 60) wearing my extensions for their editorial shoot. teambridalextensions.com

Pushing Bridal Boundaries STORY BY KIM WADSWORTH

Things felt very intimate at the Bridal Collections in New York for the upcoming Fall Winter season. Editors, bloggers and bridal boutique owners crammed into small spaces including outdoor restaurants; designer ateliers; personal apartments; penthouses; and lofts to view the latest designs. The mise en scene approach to presentations included models gathered en masse, offering their own animated presentation. Some let ‘feathers fly’ by twirling and flipping their plummed skirts; or lounged

mysteriously beautiful. Other designers kept the flow of models moving, while making flowers, beautifully appointed staging and personal commentary engaging. For those onlookers enthused by fresh ideas in bridal design, it was an exciting moment to gasp as a stunning gown entered the room and have the designer look at you and say, “Oh, I’m so glad you love it!”

GAHLIA LAHAV The motto, “You are Queen” was fitting for this presentation. For those who might

be “Game of Thrones” fans, this collection inspired by royals, was bountiful in silk tulle embroideries, Chantilly lace, floral design elements and extravagant silhouettes. The crowning touch? Actual gold leaf applied to the hair, then accessorized with yet another crown. Sheer capes, capelets and trains gave it all a regal feel. CLAIRE PETTIBONE The Romantique Collection

True to her Californian roots and vintage vibe, homage was paid to both beach and bohemian brides with crocheted laces, sexy backs, and sheer accents perfect for a walk in the sand or vows in a forest. at every turn. Never abandoning her classic style, Anne took a fresh approach by designing gowns in modern silhouettes decorated with pearls and crystals over silk crepe; precious lace appliques trickling down layers of silk chiffon; and Italian crepe flowing in feminine silhouettes. Headpeice and jewelry designer Debra Mooreland for Paris styled each model with an incredible crown, tiara or body jewelry. BERTA With so much beadwork, exquisite laces, shiny stones and soft chiffons in

sequences and patterns, each design was made so memorable. The fit of each gown accentuated the body, giving it the look of a customized creation. With the look of lingerie, much of the collection was based on transparent fabrics mixed with beadwork, resulting in a collection unlike anything else.
