FROM THE EDITOR
What the fuss is all about I’ve been living in Virginia for 35 years. That beats my native New York years by quite a bit and qualifies me as a member of the “New South.” I’ve tried to merge the best of my big city ways with all the essential traditions of southern charm. I’ve been known to slip a ‘y’all’ in a conversation; and I call every one – and thing – ‘Darling.’ I’ve even learned how to cook shrimp and grits with a side of collards, much to the delight of my southern husband John. Loving tradition as I do endears me to the South even more. I’ve learned about so many aspects of Virginian life from savvy southern friends. Years in the garden club helped me fall madly in love with peonies and hydrangea. Entertained at homes of some of the best hosts in town has taught me about hospitality and grace. Dining in this region has made me obsessed with oysters and other gifts of the sea. And most of all, living in an area surrounded by tributaries, rivers, the ocean and the Chesapeake Bay has shown me a lifestyle rich in nature and beauty. Which is why we’re dedicating this issue to all things ‘Southern Charming.’ Couples making the choice to ‘get hitched’ in a setting rich with plantations, farms, wineries, bay and ocean views, and coastlines that stretch to forever, are doing it for a reason. They’re proud of their heritage and all that defines them– with much of it rooted right here. We’ve showcased some of the best fashion, weddings, venues, and talent –all the things that make couples proud to say “I Do” under Southern Skies. Blair Austria + Thomas Markley JUNE 4, 2016 n THE VIRGINIA ZOO, NORFOLK, VIRGINIA PHOTOS BY DAVID SCHWARTZ PHOTOGRAPHY
For Blair and Thomas, this wedding was eleven years in the making so it had to leave a lasting impression. The Virginia Zoo provided a sense of elegance, creativity and uniqueness that fit the couples' personalities. The bride wore two dresses for her big day, both designed and handmade by her godmother. Blair and Thomas embraced the wild life theme with live animal ambassadors, silver animal place card holders and zebra print decor and favors. A cocktail hour in the Asia exhibit started the evening; continuing with train rides for guests throughout the zoo; and concluding with a late night food truck of empanada and taco treats. The bride and groom finished off their night of untamed fun by riding off on a (motorized) zebra and lion. 14 SPRING / SUMMER 2017

Elizabeth Greer + Joseph Napolitano SEPTEMBER 17, 2016 THE HERMITAGE MUSEUM AND GARDENS, NORFOLK, VIRGINIA PHOTOS BY ELEISE THEUER PHOTOGRAPHY
For these Hampton Roads natives, “Southern Sophistication” was key with The Hermitage Museum providing the perfect backdrop. Personal touches making their day unique included cocktail napkins with fun facts and monogrammed stir sticks; to hand cut cotton used in the floral arrangements. Garden roses, dahlias, eucalyptus, hydrangeas and magnolia leaves enhanced the antique silver centerpieces. The bride’s dress had a sweetheart neckline, rosette sash and multilayers of English silk tulle with her maids wearing a similar silhouette in mauve tones. Guests spent the evening noshing on comfort food including chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits. The father of the bride created the recipes for the bourbon tasting bar and signature drinks. The live band played into the starry night and this happy couple left their amazing event under a shower of bubbles.

Sydney Gingerich & James Adams JUNE 18, 2016 THE OYSTER FARM AT KINGS CREEK MARINA CAPE CHARLES, VIRGINIA PHOTOS BY GRANT AND DEB PHOTOGRAPHERS
A coastal vibe set the scene for Sydney and James’ summer wedding. The couple, who grew up in Virginia Beach, spent summers respectively, on their parents’ boats on the Eastern Shore. They instantly fell in love with the simple, but elegant water scenery, which was accented with coral and white roses, dramatic draping and chandeliers in the tent; and a mix of farm tables with lanterns to lighten the mood. The bride chose a sweetheart neckline gown, while her bridesmaids wore coral in four different styles. Guests enjoyed food stations including freshly shucked Shore oysters; koozies designed by the groom; and music performed by The Deloreans. The couple was sent off into martial bliss by the glow of sparklers and surrounded with love by family and friends. 22 SPRING / SUMMER 2017

PROS IN THE KNOW STORY BY KIM WADSWORTH
THE GEM MASTER TERY A. VARI, GENERAL MANAGER DIAMONDS DIRECT DIAMONDSDIRECT.COM
Q} Is there a diamond shape that is always a “go-to” for couples?
A} A round shape is by far the most popular and considered the cut most thought of when picturing the classic diamond in your mind. It is the most brilliant although ovals, cushions and pear shapes are gaining popularity. Q} With so many rings to choose from, how do you guide couples to choose the perfect rings they’ll wear for a lifetime?
A} We are experts in guidance, selection and education. We listen to our customers; then show them a selection of rings and diamonds for any budget that is requested. It comes down to what is most important to them. Q} What is one of the best “Pop the Question” engagement proposals you’ve heard about with a ring from Diamonds Direct?
A} Recently one of our customers proposed during a couples’ skydiving jump!
Q} Couples frequently give each other a token of love on the
wedding day. What are some timeless gifts you recommend? A} For her, diamond stud earrings or a diamond pendant. For him, unique cufflinks. All are traditional “home runs!”

THE PARTY GIRLS
KRISTIN LINDSEY | OWNER SANDY BARNES | STORE MANAGER JOLLITY & CO PARTY BOUTIQUE SHOPJOLLITY.CO
Q} Jollity & Co. is quickly becoming the party source for festive decor. What are some favorite ‘Must Haves’ that couples are including at their wedding? A} Anything personalized! From cake toppers, to drink stirrers, and wedding signage; there are endless ways to make a wedding unique to you. Don’t think ‘personalized’ just means your name or monogram. Weddings can have a symbol or singular element (think a unique feather or other design) that can be carried throughout your event to make it really yours. Q} What are some themes trending for Bridal Showers and Bachlorette Parties? A} Pineapples are still going strong! It’s a Southern symbol of our region but this trend is all about fun and metallics. Also on the horizon are water, constellation, and mod trends. These themed parties are about spending quality time with family and friends so think brunches and pool parties. Q} Is ‘Less More’– or is ‘More More’ when it comes to decorating for a special event? A} More is More! Here’s a little insider’s tip: you’ll always need a few more decorations than you think. It’s amazing how easily decor can get lost in a space. That said, you don’t have to go crazy! Focus on key areas like the dessert table and drink station, making them extra special and over the top. Your guess will notice! Q} The 2017 Pantone color is “Greenery.” When guiding clients about color combinations, is it best to stick to one or two colors; or embrace a number of tones? A} Color is big! It’s nice to design with a number of tones– it offers brides lots of flexibility when working through what they envision for their wedding. Bold is making a comeback and we love it! We’re seeing variations of poppy hues and deep rich tones for our 2017 events so they’d look great with “Greenery.” Pastels are sticking around in new ways– think dusty blues and shades of mauve and gray to play off the blush trend we’ve loved for so many years. Q} What are some favorite words or phrases brides are choosing for cake toppers, balloons and favors? A} Brides are looking for things with meaning from a favorite book or show. Phrases like, “Better Together” capture the love couples have for each other. Inside jokes between couples; or funny phrases and hashtags capture the uniqueness of a relationship, showcasing both of their personalities.

Guests will love tasting a full range of options that create a celebratory experience. Planning is key. Arranging a libation tasting with your caterer or winery is as vital as tasting the edibles. For wine connoisseurs, offer a sipping menu at a separate bar where guests learn and enjoy the selection at their leisure. “Virginia and North Carolina wines aren't held down by tradition," notes John Wright from Sanctuary Vineyards in the Outer Banks. LIFESTYLE days ahead with an open mind and enjoying the process of selecting wines they would like guests to experience at the wedding. Let’s not forget champagnes and sparkling wines, the proverbial bubbly of choice for weddings. There are a number of Virginian wineries like ThibautJanisson out of Charlottesville that produce Virginia FIZZ, a sparkling wine used in craft cocktails; and Blanc de Chardonnay which can be served at the start of the evening or for that special toast. If spirits are a part in your signature cocktail and bar set up, include some regional distilleries to support the southern theme. One favorite is Cirrus, a Richmond-based vodka maker that produces an amazingly smooth product that compliments any flavor profile. Balance it with southernbased bourbons, whiskeys and regionally derived bitters as popular additions to your bar stock of sips and have fun exploring all the options crafted from your state.

MA KE I T YO' SE L F An old fashioned mint julep never disappoints. This South Louisiana version offers something for everyone. According to renown chef Sydney Meers of Stove Restaurant, traditionally mint and sugar cubes were put in milk cartons filled with water and frozen. They floated in the Julep bowl to make it icy cold; then slowly melted, giving it an extra sweet flavor: SOUTH LOUISIANA MINT JULEP, SERVES 15 1/2 cup of water 2/3 cup of sugar A fifth of bourbon 120 mint leaves ruffed up Club soda, to taste
1. Boil water and sugar to make simple syrup. (Bring water and sugar to rolling boil, reduce heat to simmer.) 2. Add mint leaves and then let simmer for 30 minutes. Let cool. 3. Next, add the bourbon. Place in freezer over night or until mixture becomes a slush. 4. Crush ice, preferably snow ball ice which most blenders can produce. Fill glass with ice, add one fresh mint leaf, fill glass with mint julep mix.

When it comes to looking beautiful, there’s more to preparing for your wedding day than buying a dream gown, meeting up for makeup and hair trial runs, and getting your body toned. Starting a beauty protocol from head to toe is essential; and it’s never too early to get a regime started for your skin.
FLOWERING ALMOND SPA AT THE FOUNDERS INN STORY BY KIM WADSWORTH, FASHION AND BEAUTY EDITOR

Aesthetics of Virginia

Spa at the Founders Inn
HEAD TO TOE CARE There’s no doubt that every bridal gown reveals considerable parts of the upper body including décolleté, arms, back and shoulders. I’ve always considered the full body experience of exfoliation and hydration an important part of preparing for the big day. Lauren Padmore, esthetician and massage therapist at Flowering Almond Spa at the Founders Inn weighed in on the importance of a polished body. “With high definition photography, the focus isn’t just on the face but the entire body. A full body glow happens with exfoliation and keeping well-hydrated.” So bring on the Glow! I was ready for the protocols, beginning with a Lavender Salt Scrub. Laying on a heated bed, Lauren worked on each half of my body from shoulders to toes, sloughing off dead dehydrated skin. Endorsing regular exfoliation to ensure saturation of moisturizers, she moved on to the Lavender Body Wrap, which put me in a cocoon state of relaxation and rejuvenation. I emerged feeling lighter and my skin was polished and glowing. Then came the feet–which I was dreading. I’m ticklish and they felt beyond beat. Lauren reminded me that foot reflexology was critical for increasing circulation. Through foot massage, pressure points corresponding to different organs in the body are targeted through ten pathways. After my reflexology massage, I felt ready to slip into any four inch Louboutin that came my way. With packages like the all-inclusive Bride-To-Be; to the Perfectly Groomed
and Mr. + Mrs. Package, this spa has it all covered @ foundersinn.com/spa FACE FACTS As a makeup artist for over 20 years, I know that the end result of great makeup application is only as good as the skin you’re working on. Over time, layers of dirt and oils, along with dead skin build up on the surface. Guilty for not having had a deep cleanse in months, I was ready for the Hydrafacial M.D. that Master Aesthetician Deanna Bain prescribed at Medical Aesthetics of Virginia. “Skin is the largest organ and the one we neglect the most. Pairing a monthly treatment three months before the wedding with a daily at-home regiment equals aisle-worthy beauty.” Specially created for individual needs, I immediately felt in capable hands as she customized my medical-grade facial. The four steps happened seamlessly, beginning with a thorough cleanse followed by exfoliation that literally ‘vacuumed’ dead skin and residual dirt off my skin. A facial massage was then applied to stimulate lymphatic drainage; and the a specially formulated mask was applied to pull out impurities and drive essential nutrients back into my tired skin. Hydrated in a way I hadn’t been for months, I went home and applied makeup, admiring the defining results of skin rejuvenation. Now I’m hooked. With so many other protocols available including Botox, Kybella, Microneedling, Microdermabrasion and PERK, a quick day-before treatment that boosts and hydrates, brides will be camera-ready. medaestheticsva.com

YOLAN CRIS There are no words to describe the unique beauty and exclusive fabrics presented in this collection. With wheat as the leitmotif in
bouquets on the runway, there were stunning lace and transparent gowns mixed with flounced and
layered silhouettes. Fashion-forward necklines of ruffs, furrowed and illusion; long sleeves, many
with bishop and lantern shapes; and fabrics that
were rich with gold brocade, chiffon and lace. For a romantic like me, it was a dream.
BERTA The inspiration of this collection was all

about flowers. With innovative use of 3D flowers,
lace applique design, and rich embellishments, the collection offered the glamorous BERTA cut and
fit– complete with plunging necklines and backs–
accented with enormous crystal hoop earrings by
Maria Elena Headpieces. Body-conscious fit mixed with an artistic approach to design always drives BERTA fans to a frenzy.
ERIN COLE After working with top designer brands like Monique Lhuillier, Vera Wang and Oscar de la Renta, Erin Cole decided to create her own
couture line and she did not disappoint. Inspired
by glamorous California brides, Erin’s line had nine styles evoking ethereal quality and couture details. Favorite standouts included corseted bodices,
daring illusion details and patterned lace. Her love
of illusion elements was visible with off-the-shoulder and plunging necklines.
RIME ARODAKY This unconventional designer launched a collection starring chic separates,
cutout details and floral embellishments. High-low
hemlines, flounchy trims, and transparent lace and macrame made for visual interest. With all designs

for an interesting show. It felt young and hip; and beautifully punctuated with modern details that made her collection memorable.

ROMONA KEVEZA True
to bridal aesthetic, Romona
Keveza celebrated the timeless and classic style of Grace Kelly. Believing that it is all about a bride creating her own
legend, Romona showed lots
of color like ombre blush and her signature ‘La Vie en Rose’ lace organza at her intimate
atelier. Sleeves were a strong
presence and her iconic fit and master craftsmanship defined the collection beautifully. I
always leave feeling inspired and in awe.
