Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands? Ernest Gaines

Congratulations, Berlin! BERLIN Mayor Klaus Wowereit, an openly gay man, won a third term on Sunday. The Social Democratic Party of Germany, of which Wowereit is a member, held on to power during the regional elections in Berlin. However, the party's coalition partner, the socialist Left Party, has been voted out. A likely partner is the Greens. Wowereit was first elected mayor of Germany's largest city in 2001. He came out gay during a convention of the Berlin SPD. He received thunderous applause when he said: “I'm gay, and that is good the way it is.”

Obama praises end of gay ban PRESIDENT Obama has hailed the end of the ban on openly gay troops. The 1993 law was repealed today and the president said: “As of today, patriotic Americans in uniform will no longer have to lie about who they are in order to serve the country they love.” In the past, gay and lesbian troops have had to lie about their private lives or face dismissal. Congress voted last year to repeal the law and a repeal process has slowly progressed. Obama said: “Our armed forces have been both a mirror and a catalyst of that progress, and our troops, including gays and lesbians, have given their lives to defend the freedoms and liberties that we cherish as Americans. “Today, every American can be proud that we have taken another great step towards keeping our military the finest in the world and towards fulfilling our nation’s founding ideals,” the president added. The Pentagon sent out a memo reminding troops to treat colleagues “with dignity”. Clifford Stanley, the under-secretary of defence for personnel and readiness, wrote: “Effective today, statements about sexual orientation or lawful acts of homosexual conduct will not be considered as a bar to military service. “All service members are to treat one another with dignity and respect regardless of sexual orientation.” He added that “harassment or abuse based on sexual orientation” would not be tolerated.

We Are Everywhere! IRAN. A Facebook group has been set up for gay Iranians to come out and discuss their personal stories. Iran has the death penalty for homosexuality and there is no gay rights movement operating openly within the country. The FB-group, called We Are Everywhere, includes messages, photos and videos from LGBT Iranians and their supporters. Many have hidden their identities, due to the threat LGBT people face.

Changed balls A Belgian former professional footballer has become a gay porn actor. Jonathan de Falco, formerly of Racing Mechelen and Oud-Heverlee Leuven, now uses the name Stany Falcone for his new job. He left professional football after an injury. “The football world is not ready for gay players. There is too much prejudice and generally low tolerance”.

Trans don't dance?

...Never? Warrior star Tom Hardy graphically denies the gay rumors, but would rather they exist than nobody talks about him.

From an interview in UK Marie Claire: 'I have never put my p-nis in a man,' is Hardy's characteristically direct response. 'Ive never had a c--k in my arse, and I have no f--king desire for it. If that's what you like, cool. But it doesn't do it for me.' He's irritated his words were taken out of context but concedes, 'one thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about'.

A famous Chinese dancer says she was dropped as a judge on a TV talent show because she is transgender. Jin Xing, 44, had sex reassignment surgery in 1996. She was booked to appear for eight weeks on Feitong Fanxiang, a show for professional singers. She told China Daily that the show’s director, Chao Chi-tai, called her personally to say that government officials had demanded for her to be axed from the show. Jin claimed that Chao, quoting from an official document from culture officials in Zhejiang province, said her “transgender identity could have negative effects on society”.

I have a boyfriend and two sons, yet women still try to get me into bed. They say very beautiful, very erotic things to me about what they want to do with me, which is nice, but I'm not interested. Ricky Martin Closer Magazine’s interview

New Zealand's naked rugby team has lost for the first time in its nine-year existence. The team was beaten by a clothed women's team from Spain but there may be an easy explanation for the loss. The Nude Blacks, named after the country's elite rugby team the All Blacks, "started as a joke" says the team's founder. "...Students are known to run across the streets naked in winter, so we decided to go further by playing rugby in the nude." The team's first match was in 2002 and its become so popular that the Nude Blacks play a match before every international game in Dunedin. The visiting women's team, called The Conquistadores, won 25-20 but one of the reasons may have been that the women said they'd remove an item of clothing for each try they scored.

Reality: Travel VISIT A...

Keith from tucson

Hi! My name is Keith Wright, i’m 20. Invite you to my city - Tucson in Arizona, USA

V!

Reality: Travel My hobbies are closely related to physical activity, whether it be lifting weights at the gym, or playing sports. Otherwise, it is always nice to meet with friends at a local cafe, or the watching movies together.

Where is the best to become

acquainted with the guys in town? ANYWHERE! Tucson is a small town, and the gay community is even smaller. That may sound bad, but it really isn’t. Anywhere you go, you are bound to meet people, make new friends, and experience new things.

The gay li would exp fe in Tucson is wha e t of people, ct it to be. The majo you a come to m t least the ones I ha rity e v with homo et, are very open m e in s of clubs, o exuality. There are ded r bars, tha plenty communit t y – which attract the gay town – we is small in this a ls o h a v e drag quee ns, such a our big name sB FU. Tucso n also hos UNNY FUts an annu pride festiv al a l d u r in g but it doe t h e f a ll m s o val one wo not compare to the nths, festiuld see in New York C a li f o r nia, or .

Bars, primarily, are what many gay men in Tucson are attracted to. The reasons vary, however. Many of the bars here host dance parties, drag shows, or other special events that just draw in a crow. So whatever your reason to go out is – to drink, dance, date, hook-up, etc – there is something for everyone.

We have many clubs, but we do not have discos. There is: IBT’s Colors The Biz www.thebiztuc.com Venture-N www.venture-n.com Woody’s www.mywoodysaz.co m All great places, and all filled with great people.

I do love to visit them. They are all bars, but my favorite, I have to admit, is WOODY’S. They host weekly dance parties, and monthly strip shows with many local celebrities. Hell, even from time-totime Woody’s will have a big name pornstar come put on a show for the crowd.

V! Reality: Travel If you want to go out for a “Night on the town one bar that people must go to is KON-TIKI. They have a drink there that has six different vodkas, and it is so big that the bartender makes you drink it with someone else! If you are looking for a nice, quiet place to have dinner, there are many Mexican restaurants around Tucson, all very delicious and authentic!

To become acquainted with other guys, be yourself. No one likes drama, and no one likes a liar you are at a bar, and you see someone cute, walk up to them and just start talking. Tucson like many other places, is a ci full of open minded people th would love to meet anyone.

How should you get acquainted with other guys?

PROVIDE COMMUNICATION! If you can do this, the other three options are a breeze. If you are comfortable communicating with me, becoming acquainted with the guys is simple. If someone approaches you, and you are not liking them, simply say “I’m not interested, I’m here for something (or someone) else.” And if you want to offer sex, take the drink from the guy who offers and go from there.

At this moment, I do not have a boyfriend. My ex-boyfriend, whom I was with for two years, and I broke up about six months ago. Neither of us have any regrets, but we do have lessons learned. It’s a part of life that many people experience.

Tell us about your city! Just write to vovka.magazine@gmail.com

V! Movie how they do

play

gay

They have played the love between men. They did this so that the audience they believed. How was it? What do they feel? And how did that happen? About the doing so, they rarely tell in his interviews ... Guys who were able to play gay.

Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain Jake “We talked a lot. Heath would say stuff to me like, ‘I really think this character is very sensitive to light and I think he’s very sensitive to sound. He doesn’t really like being around any place that’s too noisy.’ We would talk a lot about that. And then when it came to doing love scenes and stuff like that, the best metaphor I can give is that it felt like we were both like, ‘Are you ready? Yeah. Let’s go,’ and we dove off the boat into the deep end. It’s like when you’re terrified of the water, you see a little kid thrown in the water and they’re trying to get back to the boat as fast as they can. That’s what it was like. But at the same time when we were there we really went for it. We knew we had to consummate this somehow. It couldn’t just be a story about friendship because there’s a part of two people connecting intimately, sexually, that drives that intimacy through the years. In my opinion when you see the movie, as soon as that happens, you’re like, ‘Okay, I’m here now. I’m ready to see what’s going to happen.’ Or, ‘I’m out of here. I’ll see you later.’ But either way it does knock you into something. We knew that it was going to have to do that and we were going to have to commit to it. There was a high five and jump in. I think at the time too, it was just – I don’t really remember it very well…”

V!

Pattinson, Little Ashes Robert "I thought I'd never get another acting job again. So I was like, 'Yeah — why not try to do something weird?' There's all these gay-sex scenes. And, you know, I haven't even done a sex scene with a girl in my whole career. Here I am, with Javier [Beltran], who plays [Federico Garci] Lorca, doing an extremely hard-core sex scene, where I have a nervous breakdown afterward," he said. "And because we're both straight, what we were doing seemed kind of ridiculous. ... And it wasn't even a closed set. There were all these Spanish electricians giggling to themselves."

heo Alexander, True Blood TWhat was the energy like on set the day that you

Pyfrom, Shawn Desperate Housewives You had to have been shocked by your character's gay storyline. "I was. I was a little shocked, but I wasn't really all that worried about it or anything. I was actually really excited they were going to give me that kind of depth in my role. I thought it added a really interesting twist to it." How did you prepare for your gay love scenes? Shawn: [laughs] "Uh, there were a lot of nerves. I just went in and right before we were about to shoot, Ryan Carnes, the guy who plays my love interest, turned to me and he was like, 'The work-up to it is much worse than the actual thing itself, so try not to worry about it, try not to think about it.'"

shot the sex scene? Well, I think that whole week, Alexander [Skarsgard] and I were both a little bit anxious, but we were joking and being professional. Alexander is a great actor, though, and he helped me get beyond the physical part of the scene. I had been afraid of the scene from the very beginning — from the first moment that I held the script in my hand — but I’m glad I did it because every time you face your fears, you move forward. It was a good experience at the end of the day. What aspect of the scene scared you? Well, the part about kissing another man. I don’t really do that, so… I didn’t want to think of him as a woman. Many people told me, “Oh, just close your eyes and think of him as a woman.” But no, because that is a totally different energy and I had to be very present with Alex and his male energy. I had to open myself to be able to actually be attracted to him, like, really attracted to him. At the end of the day, it was fun, though. How did you prepare for the big scene that day? Was there certain music that put you in the right frame of mind — or alcohol? No, no, no. I remember that I went back to my trailer and I concentrated. I did some acting exercises. I was playing the archetype of a lover, so I put on a sexy, slow song and almost did like a belly dance. I tried to get into the mindset of just being sexy and not caring about your sexual preferences and just acting on that attraction.

V! Movie Cooper, Bradley Wet Hot American Summer “I remember saying,’What if we wear tube socks, and I’ll go up on the wall, and you’ll come from behind me. And I said in the scene, ‘Say my name,’ and Michael says, ‘Ben!’ And I say, ‘No! Say my Christian name,’ and he whispers, ‘Benjamin,’ and that’s when I came.”

McGregor, Ewan I Love You Phillip Morris “The first bisexual character I played was in [1996’s] The Pillow Book. There’s tons of sex in that film. We didn’t even bother putting clothes on between scenes. I had quite a full-on sex scene with a 75year-old Japanese guy. We’re kissing, and I remember going, He’s got a mustache and that’s kind of weird. Oh! That’s definitely a scrotum. That’s odd. I like kissing boys on screen. As a straight guy, it’s quite an interesting proposition. Anything on a film set that takes you by surprise like that, that gets your blood up, is good.”

Darren Criss, Glee

“That wasn’t even something on my radar. For me, I was reading a really great character and I was excited about it. I feel comfortable with my sexuality, and I defy anyone who tries to weird me out with accusations or anything like that. Blaine’s sexuality didn’t even cross my mind as something that would be an issue. [Being gay] doesn't take up a huge chunk of what really matters about Blaine," he says. "Of course, being gay really is an important part of who he is. But Blaine doesn't really think so – at least in this utopian society that he lives in at Dalton Academy, where it's almost a little too perfect to be anybody or anything. It's just kind of matter of fact."

Smith, Freddie 90210, Days of our Lives Your last two big roles have been playing gay characters. Do you fear being pigeonholed into that type of character? I really don’t think so. Both characters are so different. Sonny is so complex, he’s traveled the world. He’s going to be a peacemaker in the family. My characters are both very different. I think as actors we want to try different things and explore… it’s been a great experience for both, really.

V! Movie Wright, Shelter Trevor "I've done lots of Disney movies and stuff like that and I was on 'The George Lopez Show' but definitely, I had never played a gay character before so it's completely new for me. It was something I wanted to talke on, the challenge of that kind of depth. I've never played a lead with the type of depth that this character had." Did he have any hesitation about doing a gay role, especially one with love scenes? "No, not at all...I did a lot of research including talking to the director Jonah [Markowitz] and getting into his head and finding out what he was all about. He had come up with [the movie] from pretty much a true story... It turned out fabulous." And what was it like working with Brad Rowe, the object of many a gay man's affection since his turn in "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss" a decade ago? "He's such a cool guy."

Carrey, Jim I Love You Phillip Morris How daring can it be for a well-known actor to play a gay character? “Hmmm… I don’t really care. No, no, no, I don’t really care about a reaction if there’s a negative reaction. I care about doing a story about amazing and fascinating people. It’s unbelievable that it ever occurred and it’s real. It’s a true story, it’s a true story about love and someone’s relentlessness to find it and keep it. There were a few people sure in my circle who were concerned about it certainly, absolutely, absolutely… advisors and people who are close to me going: “Erm… I don’t know man there’s some pretty crazy, edgy stuff in here!” And I went: “Well, why else do we live except to do something that people haven’t seen before in a film?” And you get to push the boundary a little bit, so that you know when it snaps back it doesn’t snap quite so far. I want to play people, human beings… and this is an interesting human being. The bottom line is that the quest for love is everyone’s and he’s just another person… and especially when there are extremes involved, when a person grows up feeling abandoned and unloved. It’s interesting to me what they do to compensate for that hole they think they have in themselves, or whatever it is. Of course, that has nothing to do with the gay part but it has to do with the fact that he finds the love of his life and it’s not still enough. He still has to have the two jet skis and the nice house and Phillip Morris is saying: “Wait, we’re there, we’re in nirvana, we made it.” But it’s not enough. "If I were to be really honest, there was a homophobic voice that rose up inside me that said, 'Gee, this is kind of scary. First of all, what will people think, and second of all, will I like it? Will I like kissing Ewan? How will that affect me? There were a few people in my world who said, 'Are you sure you want to do this?' And that still exists. I said 'Absolutely' because, sexual preference aside, it is a story that is so compelling and interesting and different. It's about humanity. It is about you love who you love. And love is love. And that's it...." As for the kiss: "Ewan was a bit prickly. I think we have some great sexual chemistry on screen. I think there is definitely a lot of smouldering,'yum, yum, eat-him-up' vibe."

My name is Nasko. I am 36 years old, professional Multimedia / 3D Designer and Photographer, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Photography is my biggest passion that began in my early teens. I began by taking color photographs of vacations, architecture, landscapes and macros. I photographed my first male nude on a nudist beach in the South of France. The light source was just the Mediterranean sun. The Beach was hot and desire was there. I retouch the images in Photoshop with filters and soft brushes. I like the artistic side of retouching my photographs after the photo session. Here I would like to mention that I am retoucher / photo editor, experienced in body sculpture, skin repair, toning/ smoothing, filters and color corrections in Photoshop. I have been contacted by guys who are interested in having retouched photographs, taken for their professional portfolio or to share with on-line friends. I retain no rights to the usage of the images. The model retains full rights to the photographs, and they will not be used by me for any purpose. If you are interested in a personal photo shoot such as this, just drop me an e-mail: a@atanas.dk and we can discuss it further and schedule a shoot.

In love with beauty, color and harmony. My first inspiration has been the work of Raymond Voinquel who was a friend for ten years until he passed away in 1994. He taught me the art of black and white, the sense of balance and aesthetics... Thank to him I developped a passion for portraits and humans in and out of the fashion world...

My name is Kemuel Valdes, I was born in Cuba but have live in Miami since childhood. During High School I started taking figure drawing courses in hopes of becoming an artist like Michaelangelo. Later in the University I took more advanced blind figure drawing classes and one semester I took photography as an elective. That changed everything. Once I had taken up the camera, there was no turning back. Everywhere I looked, I saw the light as an opportunity for a new picture. I started photographying all my relatives and friends and word of mouth was influential to begin dreaming of more photography opportunities. When I was 23 I started providing images for Aussiebum's website and catalog. This led to other professional jobs with local publications. However there was a moment when i lost inspiration and stopped doing commercial work to focus on creating images that I would feel had artistic merit. This led me to doing exhibitions and selling canvas prints through my website valdesarthouse.com. Currently I divide my time between commercial and artistic work that focuses on blending bodies with texture and contrast. Although I've given up figure drawing, when the pictures are printed on cotton canvas, people often wonder if they are paintings. All the images are available as cotton canvas prints for $500.US

Although I was trained as a painter, I have been photographing the men of Cuba for ten years. Why Cuba? Cuba is a song in my head. My photography is a means to transmit the tempo, the rhythm, the chorus of that song. If my work transmits the smallest part of the charm, the sensuality and serenity and, yes, the seduction that I feel when I am creating it, then I can be satisfied. And of course I am seduced. How could I not be? I try to capture and represent, and hopefully hone and transmit, that seduction. The tropical heat seduces. The dusty labyrinthine streets seduce. The wide-open public raucous theatre of it all seduces. And, yes, the men seduce. Sex, where there isn’t elsewhere and otherwise much, is an expression of liberty; and sexuality, something altogether vital and unapologetic and fluid, is an enviable marvel. These photographs are from a series that I called Esperanza. I wanted to try doing a shoot with two of my favorite models, Orly and Jorge Luis, and a girl. The girl I had booked for the shoot did not show up. So we had to find Esperanza at the last minute. I was using a rather small apartment of a friend of a friend in downtown Havana and - while I was photographing the boys getting wet on the rooftop - he went out and brought back the girl. Esperanza, that poor girl, spent most of the photo shoot shocked and bemused - especially when Jorge Luis got naked - and she kept repeating to herself like a madwoman: "Ah, Dios mio". Oh my God.

I’ve been around photography all my life. My father was an avid photographer. I had a little Minolta 110 camera as a child that I used to photograph my dogs, toys, and friends. In my teens I had a Nikon FM camera. I loved photography and all the arts. I became involved in ballet and modeling and moved to NYC from Miami. I modeled for some famous photographers in the US, Europe and Japan. I studied Fashion and Photography at the Fashion Institute in NY. I moved back to Miami where I completed my studies in Photography. I’ve always photographed the things I’m interested in or attracted to. The black and white male nude became my signature subject. My photography has always been a reflection of my self-discovery, my desires, loves, and experiences forming my very personal vision.

Its Arian here. I have featured as a model on various sites for my acrobatic work (www.amazingari.com). I wanted to bring your attention to my photography work. I have been shooting for many years, since my early teens really before even digital photography came about. It has been a secret passion of mine for so long that its been only recently that Ive decided to show the world my work, and I was recently featured in Beautiful Magazine. I think after modelling for various photographers over the world for over 15 years now, I always have had a good eye for photography. I knew how I wanted to look in photos and would often direct photographers to shoot me a certain way. When you have a strong creative vision its important to get the vision across to people, so they can interpret it. I have shot models from all over the world, both men and women and I also love shooting landscapes and nudes. I think when a person is nude it shows a sense of vulnerability and also great strength. There is nothing more natural than a naked body in all its beauty. Nothing to be feared or ashamed about. And I love to capture this strength in the photo. My fanpage has my photography work on it also as well as all my other creative stuff. www.facebook.com/amazingarifanpage

Passionate about music, art and literature, photographer Michael Alago is the quintessential New Yorker with an “only in New York” career. From booking bands at the legendary Eighties East Village rock club the Ritz to famously signing metal gods Metallica to shooting some of the hottest roughnecks on the planet, Alago’s story is driven by creativity, instinct and guts. “Brutal Truth,” his provocative new 260-page book is out March 2011 via sexy German publishing house, Bruno Gmunder. A former record label A&R executive and talent scout for over twenty years, Alago earned the respect of the industry for his expertise in a wide variety of musical genres. In addition to discovering Metallica he also signed White Zombie, Alan Vega, Johnny Rotten (with his band Public Image, Ltd.), Michael Feinstein and Nina Simone, for whom he executive produced her critically acclaimed final album “A Single Woman.” Alago left the music business in 2003 to focus on his parallel lifelong passion–photography–initially picking up a Polaroid camera and embarking on an ongoing series of erotically charged portraits, which he continues to this day. Now equipped with a variety of cameras, and an eye for muscle-bound, tattooed roughnecks, Alago shoots friends, models and bodybuilders in various settings, stages of undress and arousal. Erotically-charged and testosteronefueled, Alago’s photographs are recognized by fans worldwide. Alago’s first photo book, a collection entitled Rough Gods, was published in 2005. Night Blooming Jasmine Will Never Smell The Same, a collaborative book of poems, observations and rants with Life of Agony singer Keith Caputo was published in 2010. As an independent consultant, Alago most recently teamed up with old friend Cyndi Lauper on her Grammy-nominated album, “Memphis Blues,” on which he served as A&R executive. “Brutal Truth” by Michael Alago is available internationally as of March 2011 on Amazon.com.

JuStIN MONROE Hollywood, USA

V! VOVKA MAGAZINE / fine art

“Les Freaks, C’est Chic” Exclusive Monroe-land interview with photographer Justin Monroe Interview By: Josef Jasso Justin Monroe’s images have quickly become the new standard in contemporary homo-erotic imagery. His images have fulfilled many of our most subversive and untamed fantasies while maintaining immense appeal of beauty. When viewing one of his images, one cannot help but wonder what is the thought process behind this man’s work. It is constantly pushing the envelope by turning what would be considered pornography by most into high concept art. I recently sat down with Mr. Monroe for a candid interview in his Hollywood studio, which he amply calls Monroe-land, to discuss topics people are thinking but too afraid to ask? JJ: Who are your photography inspirations? JM: Contrary to popular belief, David LaChapelle is not one them. I think he is a great photographer and he does amazing work. My biggest inspiration, the artists that turned me onto photography to begin with, are the French photographic duo Pierre et Gilles. I always felt that beyond the razzle dazzle and sparkle of their work, they were very courageous and ahead of their time in pushing homoerotic art boundaries. If you have not seen their work, do yourself a favor and seek them out. Let me repeat myself….SEEK THEM OUT! JJ: Why do you often shoot edible men with edible food on edible parts. Why so many reference to food in your images? JM: For me its a southern characteristic, If your from the south and your momma loves you know she is gonna feed you right. So I guess when I see a beautiful man with a beautiful big round butt my mind always go to that place of love. (laughs) In fact sometimes when I see a guy with a huge ass or cock I think to myself… I wonder what flavor would that be? For me there isn’t just one flavor, there are assortments of flavors strawberry, banana and peach, all so different yet all so good. All of this runs through my mind, besides aren’t these foods essential in getting your vitamins/minerals for proper brain and eye support. JJ: Why do you constantly like to fuck with our minds with the images you give us? JM: I feel like the mind is a terrible thing to waste. I feel like we

have so many people allowing there minds to rot in this modern world. If my images do not provoke thought, interest or a little off left field they would just fall flat and I won’t want anything to do with them, why bother? Don’t we always tend to like more the story that leaves us wondering at the end? JJ: If you could have a dinner party with any three people dead or alive who would it be and why? JM: Salvador Dali, Amy Winehouse and Joan of Arc. I think this trio would make for an amazing cocktail hour to say the least, It would make for extremely enthralling emotion conversations with intense and skewed views on perception. Understanding and being misunderstood I can see being a ongoing topic at this dinner party. All three of them I believe were very misunderstood. Amy has was defined by her addiction but nobody every discussed the root of her behavior? Joan of Arc was a powerful woman that possessed characteristics such as bravery and courageousness and I would want to know where such strength came from. As for Dali, I just see his mind as being so fucked up because the images he produced are furthest from any rational thinking. JJ: Do you ever feel like your in a rutt? what you do to keep yourself out of it? JM: I love to surround myself with young creative people. I guess you could say I am forty going on fifteen. I think keeping a young mind is always vital to keeping ideas fresh. Yes, just like everyone, I find myself in that rutty hum drum place. However, it does not stick with me very long. It just doesn’t feel right. I wish I knew how to explain it better but I simply do not dwell on being counter productive. With as busy as I am, I cannot even make time to be in a rutt. (laughs) JJ: Who was or is the love of your life? JM: I actually have two. Sorry guys, I know you think you are THE ONE, but its actually my niece and nephew, amazing children the ages two and five. When I am with them, time stands still and I get to enjoy the fun and quiet of life. We all get to be kids together! The love from them is unconditional, pure, and innocent. Nothing compares. Those kids keep me in a place of sanity. JJ: What are the changes you have seen in photography since you began?

JM: I am glad you asked this question. It is something that has been on my mind a lot lately. Photography is a French term that literally means painting with light. I had an old teacher that told me, “If you do not know anything about lighting, you are not a true photographer.” These words really stuck with me. Look at all the old iconic images that stand the test of time. The masters from way back knew how to see light and turn that light into a feeling. Picking up a new Canon 7-D and putting it on auto does not make you a photographer. Do you think that is really being true to your art form? I may sound harsh, but I believe we are living in a era where people are under skilled, underpaid, and regurgitating out mediocre images, all while calling themselves artists. If we are to hold onto the true meaning of photography, we all owe it to ourselves and future generations to come to do our best in maintaining its integrity. So please, all of you new aspiring photographers, if you never listen to a word I say please listen to this, GO TO SCHOOL AND LEARN YOUR CRAFT! It prepares you for real life experience such as handling strong critics. As an artist, you open yourself up to so much criticism. JJ: What are we to expect from your work in the future? JM: I am doing an (hand signals quotation marks) end-of-theworld twelve month calendar for 2012 titled “Rock Bottom.” It is a collection of my favorite slutty boy images. I am also producing and starring in a new promotional video called “Bitch Ass Workout” guaranteed to burst your bubble. In order to have an amazing fat ass like all the model boys found in Monroeland, it would benefit you to purchase volume 1 , 2 and 3. I also am currently finishing up the long awaited sequel to Down The Rabbit Hole with a technicolor, in your face, extravaganza coffee table book titled, “Play Things.” JJ: What kind of Legacy would you like to leave behind? JM: I would love for people to be using my images when I am dead and gone. I want to have my images syndicated for my niece and nephew to generate revenue for them. As far as the legacy goes, I would love to be remembered as the artist who really marched to the beat of his own drum and was not afraid to take chances when it came to the work I produced. JJ: Lastly, what is your favorite quote of all time? JM: “Go hard or go home. Fitting”…right?

MIChEl GElIN

Zurich, Switzerland www.michelgelin.ch

V! VOVKA MAGAZINE / fine art

Michel Gelin was born 1980 in Zurich, Switzerland. His interest in nude photography was awakened when he was 24 years old. A visit to an exhibition of works by Andreas H. Bitesnich in Vienna was his very first encounter with nude photography. The sensual and clear artwork of Bitesnich inspired Gelin to self-study photography. Gelin draws a lot of his ideas for posture and posing from dancing. For 10 years he practised competitive dancing – Latin and ballroom. Dancing in competitions means practising the same movements day by day, spending hours and hours in front of the mirror. It is almost the same in photography, setting up the light, improving the technical skills and learning how to make models understand what a photographer wants. So the experience gained from dancing makes Gelin fully aware that it is hard work to improve, but that it is worth doing so. Gelin’s work follows clear lines and clear shapes. He does not make any use of stage props and works most of the time with the nude body only. The background and the light form the stage, while the shadows are the clothes of the model. The poses of the models are often symmetric and very geometric. The tension of the postures chosen makes the models’ muscles become visible and shows the strength of the male body. Gelin is always looking for the perfect light on skin, to produce shiny light reflections and deep shadows to accentuate the muscles and give the body a clear shape. To gain the confidence required to shoot a model without any clothes is of high value for Gelin. For him aesthetics, quality and having respect for the model are clearly in focus. When a model is undressed in front of the camera, he is somehow vulnerable – this needs the photographer’s appreciation. To Gelin, shooting a model in the nude does not mean showing everything, but rather means not covering anything. The male beauty is seamless and does not end at the belt, but it requires sensitiveness to maintain the aesthetics while going below the belt. By upholding sensitivity, quality and aesthetics, Michel Gelin’s photos evolve in an intimate atmosphere with the model.

Though my name is Noel, I was not born during the Christmas season like most people believe. 25 Years ago at the age of 25, I decided to take up photography as a hobby and purchased my first camera gear. Since then, I made the hobby into a way of life as I evolved into a professional photographer. I have photographed landscapes, pets, flowers, skyscrapers, and people in general buy my favorite type of photography is the male nude. I love the male form and the fact that I can record it photographically forever is highly exciting to me. During the last 15 years or so, the majority of my work is photographing the male form during several stages of undress. I use very little retouching to my images as they portrait the true person with imperfections and all. Let's face it, we are not perfect the way the media likes to portrait their models. My clients are the "everyday" type of guy from all walks of life and making them look good has always been my passion. For me, my biggest challenge is concentrating on my work and not on my client's sex appeal. Currently based in Fort Lauderdale/Miami Florida, USA, I have photographed hot men around the world.

I was born in 1956 in New York City, surrounded by an intense and violent urban environment. Making art was my inner world, my refuge. I have always viewed the world around me with a photographic eye, even before I owned a camera. As a boy I would make mental "photographs" by blinking. This was how I recorded what I saw. I first worked with a photographer when I was 13, accompanying my mentor to hospitals throughout New York as he photographed special medical cases. Later, at 18, I had the great fortune to study “Psychological Portraiture with renowned portrait photographer Philippe Halsman. Then, after several careers, I decided to devote myself to photography in 1995. When I photograph men I look into them, not at them. I delve beyond the surface and try to discover deep aspects of our common humanity. As a man who loves men I understand the thrill of the male form. But I love more than form and I cannot have any real, intimate, lasting or meaningful relationship with form. I feel so strongly that intimacy is what is lacking in our world, in our politics and our interpersonal relationships. So, rather than pose the men I photograph I try to share experiences of sincere and genuine intimacy with them. This is true whether I am photographing a lover or someone I am meeting for the first time for the purpose of making the photograph. One function of art is to inform culture, to help evolve the way we think, act and interact.
