Take this word – education. It’s a word in English that’s derived from the Latin, which means leading out. People have traditionally thought that education means putting stuff into kids (or to anyone). They are tabula rasa, they're blank space, they have to have knowledge, put it to them. That’s not what education is. What education is finding within yourself the skills that already lighten, the interests that already lighten, the capabilities that already lighten, and teachers helping you to draw that out of yourself – leading out education, ex not in. And that means taking every possible kinds of experience including the experience of knowledge, reading and and using it to customize it within yourself and to bring it out.
The key skills we have to teach young people, and in Indonesia today, you have everybody including your President saying, “The future success of our country and happiness about people depends on getting everybody with the right skills and capacity.” I mean, he’s a very pioneering person in realizing that you don’t get the economic strategy working unless you have skilled people. The skills we have got to bring out of everybody to be a lifelong learner are the capacity to learn for yourself, to take your experience and use it productively. So we have to teach people to have the right means of analyzing and thinking, the right means of engaging with other people and learning leadership skills.
We have to teach people every aspect of communication, how to engage with others, how to be a good people person, how to really work in the digital age. And having the right languages, having your own languages first, having world languages that are useful to you. And if you have to pick up one world language,I am not bias when I say the most valuable one you can have is English. People who can use English for professional and business purposes on average have a career in which they are 50% more than people who don’t have English. English is a door opener to the world of work internationally, and to communication internationally. People should be taught not so much focus on knowledge but on skills, pulling the skills out of you so then you can learn for yourself. And yes, all experience is a source of education. Education is not a concept; education is an organic thing of our own life. Living is learning. Therefore, going into new experiences is a catalyst, is a multiplier of this impact. Going overseas for studies can be unnerving. But, that's part of education too. We learn from experience not just happy experiences but complex experiences as well.
