What motivated your career path?

Since childhood, I’ve been obsessed with creative work, designing steel toys, experimenting with clothes branding, drawing illustrations, and engaging in manual typography design. My uncle, a Graphic Designer, greatly influenced and guided my early creative endeavors.

The love for creating continued through junior high, where my passion for design and art truly ignited, especially after studying ART. I already knew I wanted to pursue something art and creative-related, like graphic design, industrial design, or architecture.

How many years have you been a Creative Designer?

I’ve professionally worked for 6 years, starting freelancing and mastering creative software in 2016 during my third year as a Visual Communications student.

What design projects or challenges are you most excited about in 2024?

I’m excited about 2024; I want to delve deeper into the digital creative space, particularly focusing on motion work. As the design space rapidly transforms, I want to explore augmented reality, virtual reality, sound design, and animated data visualization. Although motion-creative work poses challenges, it creates an immersive experience, leading to higher retention and better message recall.

How would you describe your design style in three words?

I appreciate simplicity, embracing the principle of “less is more.” I enjoy minimal and straightforward creative work while also exploring unconventional thinking and new possibilities.

This project was both challenging and exciting as I am passionate about innovation and digital transformation. Being a digital event, the creative direction had to be stimulating and reflect cutting-edge futuristic elements. This was a great opportunity for me to showcase my capabilities, and I look forward to the next one.

What design tools or software are essential to your workflow, and do you plan to explore new ones in 2024?

I primarily use the Adobe Creative Suite, proficient in Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and motion software like Premiere Pro. I am

currently learning After Effects. In 2024, I aim to expand my software proficiency and explore Adobe Substance Painter, Cinema 4D, and Adobe XD. Are there specific design techniques you want to master or experiment with in the coming year?

Motion graphics is the key creative skill set I aim to master this year.

Understanding how to animate design elements, create engaging transitions, and incorporate motion graphics can elevate creative work.

Trend forecaster WGSN has unveiled its latest report, providing a fascinating glimpse into the consumer landscape anticipated in 2024. Recognizing the inherent challenges of long-term forecasts, WGSN wisely restricted its outlook to a twoyear horizon. This approach combines speculation and plausibility in examining the signals of change in the report, grabbing the attention of marketers tuned into the constantly changing market dynamics.

This report is organized around four consumer sentiments and four consumer profiles, as well as engagement strategies for each of the four profiles, making it both approachable and practical.

Consumer Sentiments The four sentiments are regarded more as states of mind. The first two – “Future Shock” and “Overstimulation” – are self-explanatory to anyone with a pulse and a smartphone. The third – “Tragic Optimism” – is intriguing due to its juxtaposition of concepts, and it refers to the search for meaning in the midst of trauma. In a postpandemic, conflict-ridden, economically unstable and politically polarized world, there are plenty of opportunities for that. Think of it as the opposite of “Don’t worry, be happy.”

As for the fourth sentiment – “Awe” – this state of mind is defined as the mix of fear and wonder felt when confronted by unexplainable phenomena. The authors suggest that “awe experiences” (such as taking a walk through a redwood jungle or standing in the nave of a cathedral) increase empathy and reduce stress.

Now onto the profiles, which are built on the sentiments described above. Here’s where things get practical.

Demographic: Millennials and Gen Z This demographic is exploring fractional lifestyles, having fewer children and job-hopping at unprecedented rates. They are also embracing entrepreneurship and crafting new life/work models. They are not interested in the pre-pandemic obsession with productivity at any cost.

Forecast: There may be a rise in track-and-trace technology. By 2024, brands such as Armani, will implement a digital ID, which can trace an item from source to sale to resale. Sustainable facts labels will also aid transparency and ethical purchasing.

Engagement Strategy: Rethink product labels. This demographic prioritizes sustainability, and they want more transparency about the production journey so they can make more ethical purchase decisions.

Profile #3: The Memory Makers Attributes: Nostalgic, caring Aspiration: To reimagine family and work values.

Demographic: Boomers and Gen X This demographic is increasingly single, childless and if they’re LGBTQ+, likely to be lacking in family support. They’re more reliant on their peers for emotional and physical care.

Forecast: A global pandemic followed by a cost-of-living crisis and a war is causing physical and psychological stresses that will lead to a rise in chronic illness and a spike in stroke and heart disease.

Engagement Strategy: Invest in the care economy. Prioritize products and services that allow consumers to live more independently. Product designers should ensure inclusive design to meet diverse expectations and needs of this cohort.

Profile #4: The New Sensorialists Attributes: Unafraid and optimistic about the future of technology Aspiration: Decentralize everything to create a fair and equitable metaverse Demographic: Gen X and Gen Y Forecast: According to Mastercard’s “New Payments Index 2021,” 93% of people will consider using at least one emerging payment method, such as cryptocurrency, biometrics or contactless in the next year.

Engagement Strategy: Meta loyalty rewards.

This crypto-cohort needs to be accessed through play-to-earn rewards and their digital wallets. Consider ways to partner through NFTs, in-game sponsorship, and ads and events in meta malls.

Additionally, the title of influencer in Botswana has also had a negative connotation, where consumers feel like anyone with a following is being shoved down their throat as an influencer.

There however has been growth with brands now realizing that not everything needs to be curated and picture perfect to influence. From when influencer marketing started to now, we are seeing a wide range of influencers who are at a better chance of influencing than the prim and proper ones. Authentic collaborations between influencers and brands resonate more deeply with consumers and steer clear of influencers whose content feels forced.

However, just as a positive influencer collaboration can move a brand forward, choosing a wrong influencer can be damaging.An instance that happened was when a known influencer tried to diversify their avenues and, in turn, got called out for influencing people to get scammed. The comments in the said influencer’s posts kept mentioning the brand that they worked with, questioning whether this was the kind of influencer they want to be associated with because consumers now know that they hold the actual influence.

Much like the spread of influenza, the impact of an influencer, whether positive or negative, can be contagious. A good influencer can amplify brand messaging, enhance credibility, which we have seen with several influencers who have not only influenced brands locally but internationally too. On the flip side, a controversial influencer can quickly tarnish a brand’s reputation.

Similar to monitoring the spread of a virus, brands need to keep a vigilant eye on the performance and public reception of influencer campaigns. Realtime monitoring allows for quick responses to any issues, helping to contain potential damage. Ain’t No Party Like a Voodoo Party Ononofile Lonkokile

ne remarkable instance that perfectly sums up the above mantra is our recent Durban Christmas trip. Despite it starting slow, the Voodoo team was committed to having a good time together in their words to OPERATE! The Durban trip was not just about the destination it was a reflection of the Voodoo team ‘s commitment to team work, patience with each other and knowing that we all need to know that the next person is fine to fully enjoy the trip. It showed that, even in foreign land we are our colleague ‘s keeper.

While others may have succumbed to the slow holiday vibes,due to being

fatigued from the road trip, the Voodoo team took it as an opportunity to showcase their ability to have fun despite any circumstances which could have hindered it. From the boat cruise party to the pool party to playing card games on our way back to Botswana when the road kept on getting longer, it was sheer magic.

What also sets the Voodoo team apart is their ability to transform any occasion, be it a work trip or a casual Friday afternoon, into a celebration of working with each other and celebrating our wins. The team’s commitment to fun goes beyond just socializing—it’s a testament to their unity and shared values which should also be incorporated into their work.

The Barbie movie didn’t just break the box office; it shattered expectations, opening at a staggering $70.5 million and raking in $155 million over the weekend. Directed by the brilliant Greta, this cinematic phenomenon painted the town pink, with everyone from ALDO to Xbox riding the pink wave.

Barbie didn’t just make a movie; it created a cultural quake. Will we ever witness another cinematic tsunami like this? For now, let’s give a nod to Greta for turning the world into a sea of pink perfection.

2.Renaissance? Nah, It’s a Blue-ssance!

Beyoncé’s Club Renaissance wasn’t just a tour; it was an otherworldly experience. The sliver and glam extravaganza took the world by storm, but the real showstopper was Blue Ivy. The young starlet stole the spotlight, forming her fan base known as the Ivy League. Move over Queen Bee; Blue is ascending to her throne. The tour wasn’t just about perfection; it was about witnessing the birth of a new era, as Blue’s confidence blossomed on stage, leaving audiences in awe.

3. From ‘Oh nana!’ to ‘Oh baby!’

Rihanna, the queen of surprises, rocked the Super Bowl half-time show draped in red, but that wasn’t the only thing turning heads. Yes, she was flaunting her baby bump! Riri and partner ASAP Rocky welcomed a baby boy, joining the Hollywood baby boom that included power couples like Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Baker, Keke Palmer, Blake Lively and Reynolds, and Paris Hilton and Carter via surrogate. Hollywood was bustling with baby fever!

4. Heartbreak Season: Hollywood’s Love Woes Love took a hit this year, with some of our favorite power couples calling it quits. From the shocking separation of Travis and Kylie to the unexpected parting of Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, love faced turbulence in Hollywood.

5. Submerged: Titanic’s Haunting Return The world held its breath as five millionaires descended into a submersible to explore the Titanic. However, the journey turned tragic as the missile imploded within 105 minutes. It took five agonizing days to find the scattered pieces of the ship, evoking memories of the Titanic disaster 111 years ago. The Titanic struck again, reminding us of the haunting beauty and unforgiving nature of the deep.

Book Review: 30th Candle Ononofile Lonkokile This book, now adapted into a Netflix film, is written by the talented South African writer Angela Makholwa. It revolves around four women on the brink of their 30th birthdays, each navigating a distinct path within their tight-knit circle. The storyline tackles the challenges women face, encompassing societal pressures, the race against agerelated expectations, and their childhood traumas that persist into adulthood.

Within this close group of friends, one is ‘happily married,’ another has relationship struggles, a third finds herself dating a friend’s fiancé, and the fourth desperately wants marriage. Despite its initial presentation as a conventional romantic novel, with the writer being too colorful and corny for the most part, the story takes unexpected twists, introducing crime to balance its cheesiness.

For a 30-year-old reader, the book imparts a valuable lesson: the notion of starting afresh whether in terms of career or relationships, is not bad a bad thing. Another takeaway is that comparing one’s journey to another’s steals joy and falsely portrays stagnation when, in reality, there is progress.

Side note: I bought this book when I was 29 years old last year. I happened to spot it on a bookshelf when I was travelling and only discovered, after reading the blurb, that it revolves around the experiences of 30-year-old women navigating relationships and life in general. I decided to wait until this year, when I turned 30, to read it.

Positive reviews can elevate a company’s stature, while negative ones can spell potential disaster. The question arises: Are reviews a gift or a curse?

Positive reviews and testimonials are incredibly valuable for businesses. They act as a kind of online trust-building tool, boosting credibility and encouraging customers to engage. A series of positive comments can sway potential buyers and significantly impact a company’s profits.

Unfortunately in Botswana, leaving reviews isn’t common or seen as a positive thing to do. It is often viewed as attack, missing the chance for helpful suggestions.

It’s crucial to understand that negative reviews, though they seem bad, can actually help. They hold important information about where things need improving, like a map to make services or products better.

Platforms like Consumer Watchdog Botswana on social media have created a platform that let people talk about their experiences. However, there is a growing trend locally, that shows a big problem when it comes to negative reviews, people will post their reviews and if negative they usually end up being deleted or get countered with the truth and makes it hard to trust. When it comes to negative

feedback, businesses shouldn’t ignore it. Acknowledging and dealing with problems is the first step to making things better. Criticism, if taken constructively, can help a business grow and improve services beyond customer expectations Moreover, taking a proactive approach to reviews is vital. Businesses should aim to make fantastic first impressions. They need to create experiences that are interesting, smooth, and relevant to connect with customers. This means not just waiting for reviews but actively asking for feedback and always trying to improve.

On the other hand, businesses should strive to consistently deliver excellent customer experiences. Making positive first impressions and always giving great service lays the groundwork for good reviews and lessens the impact of possible negative feedback.

In summary, customer reviews bring both opportunities and challenges for businesses. Embracing both positive and negative reviews as valuable feedback is crucial. Using them to grow, be open, and continuously improve can turn what seems like a problem into something that helps businesses succeed in the digital world.
