Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada

A Message from the Founder Dr. Florence Jameson What is life? Some people say it is just a collection of stories. My heritage as an American Indian is to pass the torch of culture, one story at a time. These stories become myths, which reflect the values of our culture. Though the facts may be fiction, the values are true! Many of these stories carry both the beauty and the pain of our existence. Tonight we’re going to share stories of lives who have been transformed by the compassion of every person associated with Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada. These lives have been touched with loving kindness and have been saved because of you. Our message of hope and love, and our Culture of Caring, strives to inspire others in our community to join us in helping those less fortunate. Volunteers in Medicine is a demonstration project of the power of compassion. We are here to minister to the sick, in body, mind and spirit, because we believe every life is of infinite value and everyone deserves the right to a healthy, productive and happy life. In Las Vegas, the future of medicine will focus more on prevention, teaching healthy life choices, smoking cessation, reduction of abuse of alcohol, violence, promiscuity, recreational use of drugs, and obesity. It is estimated these items account for 1/3 of all the health-care costs of the United States. It is estimated that there are 3,000,000 medical and dental visits provided by Free and Charitable Clinics annually throughout the United States. We can see that Free Clinics have been, are now, and will always be an integral part of this country’s overall health care system. Who are our patients? At a glance they are ordinary people, many of them are everyday workers. They are heroes without whom Las Vegas would not be what it is today. They are men, women and children. They are Caucasian, Hispanic, and Filipino; they are Indian, Pakistani, and African. They may be 7 or 72 years old. They are our neighbors. At VMSN we know with fundraising comes a great responsibility and duty to our donors. We work hard with our many programs to leverage every dollar you give us, to make a deep and lasting impact on children and families in our community. We are making a difference and we know that this community will be stronger because of the foundation of good health that you provide and the spirit of giving that you inspire. We promise to leverage and be responsible for every donor dollar. We leverage it with volunteer physicians, when after their long day at their regular job, they volunteer their own time to help others. We leverage it with our young students, who desire to make a difference in someone’s life. We leverage it through our amazing Prescription Assistance Program, where we deliver approximately $2 million in free medication each year. We leverage it by partnering with community businesses, laboratories, radiologists and so many others who have stepped up to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars of service each year. We leverage it with our academic institutions that have partnered with us to help provide medical services and encourage community engagement. Our clinics are a dream come true for so many. I can tell you that for every dollar you give, we provide well over 4 dollars in health care to our community. In 2014, our $1 million budget provided $4 million in health-care benefits to our community. What is clear to me is that the good health, lives saved, hope and happiness is immeasurable and priceless. Please give so that others may live. God bless you. Sincerely,

Florence Jameson Founder & Chairman of the Board

Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada A Culture of Caring Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada (VMSN) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates two patient-centered medical homes, staffed primarily by volunteers, that provide free and charitable health care and wellness services to the working uninsured and unemployed residents of Southern Nevada. VMSN is a shining example in a constellation of free clinics across the United States that provide a crucial safety net to low-income, uninsured Americans who would otherwise go without health care in our country. Our vision is to ensure every man, woman, and child in Southern Nevada has access to health care. VMSN clinics provide free adult and pediatric primary care, preventive and acute care, newborn checkup and immunizations, diagnostic tests, medications, breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings to Southern Nevada residents who are either not eligible for Medicaid/Medicare or cannot obtain affordable health insurance coverage through an employer or other means. Since opening its first clinic in Southeast Las Vegas in 2010, VMSN’s medical professional corps of 450+ volunteers and staff has provided more than 25,000 patients visits, averaging 360 patient visits per month. VMSN’s mission to provide quality health care and support for people without access to health care within a Culture of Caring continues to positively impact the health of our community. On October 14, 2015, our dream of serving Southern Nevada’s uninsured at more than one location became reality with the grand opening of the Ruffin Family Clinic. In addition to providing primary medical care, the Ruffin Family Clinic will also provide Mental Health and Social Services, Dental and Vision services, and expanded Patient Education Services. In future years, VMSN’s flagship location near Downtown Las Vegas will serve as the medical home for 10,000 Southern Nevadans, providing 25,000 life-saving patient visits per year. While Nevada has been successful at providing health insurance to a larger portion of its residents (Nevada moved from 49th place in the number still uninsured to 36th following the implementation of the Affordable Care Act), many of our citizens remain uninsured: 5.4% of our children under the age of 18, 15.2% of adults between the ages of 18 to 64 and 1.9% of adults ages 65 years and older. As we know, the uninsured are less likely to have a medical home outside of an emergency room. They often go without preventive health care and screenings, and are more likely to be diagnosed with a disease in an advanced stage. VMSN’s unique efforts within the community to combat this disparity have included partnering with area hospitals to help reduce emergency room visits of uninsured patients as well as collaborating with other nonprofit agencies to help provide primary medical care to low-income client populations. It is through these efforts that we will achieve our goal to give Southern Nevadans the gift of health and hope, so they can once again lead productive lives, and in turn contribute to the health and wealth of their families and communities. VMSN clinics are currently the medical home for thousands of uninsured Southern Nevadans providing more than 5,000 patients visits a year. VMSN’s dedicated Board of Directors has found a non-partisan, community-inspired way to help our community by drawing upon the goodwill of hundreds of concerned citizens, community leaders, businesses and philanthropists to assist the many Nevadans still struggling and in desperate need of quality medical, dental and vision care. Thanks to our amazing volunteers, invaluable community partners and generous donors, we will continue to hear the phrase “Volunteers in Medicine saved my life” for years to come!

The Dick Feeney Tribute to Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin is headlining at the Tuscany Suites & Casino in the COPA Showroom Theatre and in theatres around the country. Come and re-live the magic of the Rat Pack!

Bob Anderson as Frank Sinatra Bob Anderson started a genre in show business that became one of the most popular forms of entertainment on stage today. Merv Griffin, the well-known talk show host discovered Bob’s unique talent one evening at his Hollywood Hills home and decided to introduce him to the world on the next taping of his TV show from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Griffin introduced Bob as “The Singing Impressionist.” His accolades are numerous, but a couple in particular are very profound. Tom Jones says, “The reason Bob Anderson is the best at what he does, is because he actually sings as well as the person he is doing.” Tony Bennett says, “He does me really well…doesn’t he? PEOPLE Magazine said, “Bob Anderson is America’s greatest singing impressionist.” When Las Vegas celebrated its 50th anniversary, the Las Vegas Review Journal, Nevada’s largest daily newspaper, asked its readers to name their all-time favorite Vegas acts of the last 50 years. Bob came in at number “12” between Barbra Streisand and Ray Charles. Clint Holmes Clint Holmes is a rare performer who can legitimately be called one of the greatest contemporary entertainers of our time. Whether headlining New York’s elegant Café Carlyle, Las Vegas’ greatest showrooms or performing with some of America’s most prestigious orchestras, Clint redefines the standard for vocalists. Every performance is an unforgettable experience as he performs selections from the Great American Songbook, standards from Sinatra’s legendary repertoire, contemporary classics or stirring original music. Holmes’ career soared after the release of his hit song “Playground in My Mind” in 1973, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Currently, Clint can be found in the recording studio working on a diverse range of projects including his upcoming album, produced by Grammy-winning producer Gregg Field. In 2012 he premiered “This Thing Called Love – The Music of Cole Porter and Paul Simon”, co-written with his award-winning musical director and arranger Jeffrey Neiman, at Café Carlyle to rave reviews and the prestigious Bistro Award for outstanding new cabaret show in New York. It was followed by the critically acclaimed “Stop This Train”. He is currently the Artist-In-Residence at Cabaret Jazz at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas. Pete Barbutti Pete Barbutti (born May 4, 1934) is an American comedian and musician (playing piano, "cordeen", and trumpet). He made at least twelve appearances on “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson,” from 1971 through 1992. He is a native of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton area in Pennsylvania. Among his better-known routines are "Cordeen School," about an accordion teacher who sells a lot of accordions, but whose students never seem to learn much; "The Mustang Ranch," about legalized prostitution in Nevada; “and a number of piano-based gags” such as "tuning the piano stool," and using the business-end of a plumber's helper, stuck to the side of the piano, as a cigar holder. Among his better known jokes is the story of the pig with the wooden leg. Among his better known television works was "Celebrity Microwaves" as the host and "The New Liars Club" and "The Next Line" as a regular panelist. NIGHTSHIFT NIGHTSHIFT is one of the top variety bands in Las Vegas. They perform over 100 corporate dates per year in Las Vegas. Translated by Robert G. Hendricks Ballantine Books, 1989

Chapter 63 Act without acting; Serve without concern for affairs; Find flavor in what has no flavor. Regard the small as large and the few as many, And repay resentment with kindness. Plan for the difficult while it is easy; Act on the large while it is minute. The most difficult things in the world begin as things that are easy; The largest things in the world arise from the minute. Therefore the Sage, to the end does not strive to do the great, And as a result, he is able to accomplish the great; Those who too lightly agree will necessarily be trusted by few; And those who regard many things as easy will necessarily end up with many difficulties. Therefore, even the Sage regards things as difficult, And as a result, in the end he has no difficulty.
