Porthill’s aggression too much for Foxes AFTER a promising start to the season Elworth CC succumbed to title contenders Porthill Park. Porthill (119 all out) beat the Foxes (84 all out), 25 points to 6 on the day. Porthill’s Jack Beech hit an impressive 50 which, in a low scoring match, proved the difference between the sides. So far this season Elworth have won home ties against Bagnall Norton, Burslem and Ashcombe Park. However, they lost the season opener at home to Checkley and fell to Stone on the road. Away at Porthill the Foxes lost the toss and were bowling first on an extremely hot afternoon. They got off to a fine start though and had the home side 36/4 with two wickets for Yasir Ali and one each for Mike Holt and Adnan Ghaus. Matt Holmes, returning behind

the stumps after injury, turned in an excellent display and Yasir’s two were caught by him. However, Beech and Dan Hancock set about restoring the home side’s fortunes, the former deserving his half century before becoming Adnan’s fourth wicket and Holmes’ fourth victim. Russ Ballard talked during the interval of staying calm and not losing a wicket in the first ten overs. Elworth had 74 overs in which to score the runs as they had bowled their opponents out inside 36. However, Porthill’s aggressive approach highlighted the difference between the teams in contention and the rest.
