Nantwich community news and events

NANTWICH’S Cheshire East Council leader claims the local economy is on the road to recovery. Despite a smattering of empty premises in Nantwich town centre, traders are hoping for a bumper Christmas. Some 40 large advertising boards have been erected across the region to entice people into the town over the festive period. The news comes as Cheshire East’s rural market towns were earmarked as among the happiest places to live in a survey by the Office For National Statistics.

Bunbury councillor Michael Jones met up with Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne last month. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together potential investors and other stakeholders to talk about opportunities to drive the local economy forward. Clr Jones said: “Cheshire East is going from strengthto-strength and the whole purpose of the event was to send a message to the Government that Cheshire East is open for business.” What do you think? Growing pains

Nantwich could be ‘wide open’ to developers CAMPAIGNERS fear almost 4,500 new homes could be built within two miles of Nantwich town centre. A recent ruling that Cheshire East does not have a fiveyear supply of housing land could have huge ramifications according to Pat Cullen, leader of Protect Stapeley. On the back of Secretary of State Eric Pickles’ decision, proposals currently under appeal could be given the go-ahead – including Muller’s controversial plans for 1,110 homes in Stapley. “This decision opens the floodgates to developers, particularly around Nantwich and Crewe,” explained Mr

Cullen. “I’m afraid the nightmare scenario of nearly 4,000 new houses within two miles of Nantwich town centre is a step closer.” Nantwich Town Council had favoured schemes at Kingsley Fields, Snow Hill and Stapeley Water Gardens. But councillor Arthur Moran fears the town has been left ‘wide open’ to developers. “The Town Council had agreed a core strategy for Nantwich and the 1,500 homes in the North,” he said. “Hopefully that would have defended us against further speculative developments. “But this now leads us to being wide open.”

Traffic misery

NETWORK Rail have apologised after traffic chaos in Nantwich. Complaints were sparked after the London Road A51 level crossing was closed for five days – causing lengthy tailbacks. “We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused,” said a spokesperson. “It is part of the programme to modernise signalling equipment between Crewe and Shrewsbury.”

Festive fun

THE traditional Christmas Fayre comes to Richmond Village Nantwich on Saturday, November 23. Residents can do their festive shopping under one roof with over 20 stalls available. “Children can deliver their Christmas lists to Father Christmas in person while parents can enjoy a glass of mulled wine and maybe the odd mince pie,” said a spokesperson. Admission from 11am is free with an optional donation of a cuddly toy.

Club is on song

Battle ready NANTWICH’S Holly Holy Day will take place next year on Saturday January 25. It will be 370 years to the day since Parliament’s forces overcame the Royalists in a closely fought affair that took place on the outskirts of the town, on a murky winter’s afternoon. The battle lifted the month long siege of the town, and in celebration the residents sported sprigs of holly in their button holes, hence Holly Holy Day. The annual event includes a programme of entertainment during the morning, the parade of the Sealed Knot

troops into the town square, and the dramatic reenactment of the battle on Mill Island. There is usually a party atmosphere in the evening as gaudily dressed troops and their families frequent the town’s hostelries and restaurants, together with other revellers. Spokesman Shaun Cafferty said: “There will be singing and dancing, morris men, 17th Century music, a musketry demonstration and living history exhibition, mounted troopers and street entertainments, plus the excellent farmer’s market.” Visit www.hollyholyday.org.

NANTWICH Film Club hosts its largest and loudest event with a sing along screening of The Sound of Music next month. Organisers are expecting a bumper turnout for the festival special at the Civic Hall on Monday, December 9. The bar will be open throughout the performance with food also available. Doors open at 6.30pm.

Pub reopens

A NANTWICH pub has reopened following a £150,000 makeover. Over 20 new jobs have been created at Wilbrahams on Welsh Row. Returning to the town, Richard Shaw and Karl Unitt currently own The Glasshouse in Sandbach.

Music milestone

THE Nantwich and District Band is celebrating three decades of music making with a free concert in the Civic Hall on November 16 at 7.30pm. Frequently found enlivening the atmosphere in Nantwich town centre, the band performs at many fairs and festivals in the area, and puts on a series of its own concerts. Thirty years on and the band is still flourishing and is always on the lookout for new players, old and young. The concert also marks the departure of the band’s conductor Ola Ness (pictured) and the inauguration of his replacement Rob Stevenson. Entry is free. To book call Daniel Page on 07734706135.

Winter of discontent ANGER continues to build after garden waste collections were axed in Nantwich this month. Cheshire East Council bosses claim postponing collections across the county between November and March could save £1M over the next four years. Last year collections were only suspended for two months and the move has sparked concern from local residents. Resident James Readhill told The Dabber: “Leaves fall from trees until mid December so what am I supposed to do? “As usual, it’s making cuts without thinking about the consequences.” Willaston and Rope Ward UKIP Councillor Brian Silvester added: “Residents have already contacted me to complain about this huge

reduction in service. “There has been no public consultation or consultation with councillors on this major change. “It seems residents who have recently started to pay the extra £45 per year for an additional green bin will get some recompense for the 20% reduction in service but not everybody else. “This appears to be unfair and if recompense is to be given to some it should be given to all those who pay the extra for an additional bin.” Councillor David Topping said the savings will go towards paying for more vital services. He said: “That is a lot of money which the council will now be able to use to focus on improving key winter services such as repairing potholes and gritting our roads.”

SUDDEN IMPACT

DANNY Johnson insists Nantwich Town can make it a November to remember and transform their season. The Dabbers have been surprise strugglers in Evo-Stik Premier but the 37-year-old boss believes the arrival of Witton striker Steve Foster, 31, will help them turn the corner. “Steve’s experience will

not only help us recover our current league form but I’m convinced he will have a great impact and help us achieve a top eight finish,” explained Johnson. “He’s got a great desire to win and I get the impression he wants to prove he still has so much to offer at this level and prove a few people wrong. “I’m excited by the squad

Tel 01270 625384

we’re assembling as I feel we are solid throughout the spine and we have enough experience and quality in depth to kick start our season from here on in. “We have let ourselves down far too often. “But if we can find the right combinations, I’m convinced we can go on a run that will take us up the league.”
