Noting Saint Joseph’s Veteran coach Phil Martelli (15th season) has the Hawks out to a 3-0 start heading into Sunday’s clash with Purdue ... ... St. Joseph’s beat Boston College 84-80 Friday to advance to the Paradise Jam semifinals ... Picked to finish in the bottom half of the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Hawks rely heavily on veteran returning starters Garrett Williamson (12.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.3 apg), Darrin Govens (15.3 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.0 apg) and Idris Hilliard (12.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg) ... Freshman guard Carl Jones (15.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg) is the Hawks’ leading scorer thus far, however ... Jones was a highly touted prep prospect who received scholarship offers from ACC, Big East, Big Ten and Big 12 programs ... In the frontcourt, Hilliard is the only returning player who started multiple games last season, so 6-8 sophomore Bryant Irwin (2.3 ppg, 2.3 rpg) will be looked upon to contribute down low for the Hawks ... He is joined in the post by 6-11 redshirt sophomore (and Bucknell transfer) Todd O’Brien (7.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg) ... The Hawks have a -12.0 rebounding margin this season, perhaps proving why preseason prognosticators pointed to the frontcourt when assessing potential weak spots in the Saint Joseph’s roster ... The Hawks, however, did hit the offensive glass in their win Friday, pulling down 11 offensive rebounds

Hopson Dialed In From Long Distance Sophomore shooting guard Scotty Hopson has more than doubled his scoring average from last season (9.2 ppg) and leads the Vols with an average of 22.0 points through two games ... Most impressive about Hopson’s offensive performance has been his shooting from 3-point range, as he has made 14-of-18 attempts (.778) ... His six 3-pointers against UNC Asheville Nov. 17 were a careerhigh, as was his 25 points scored (which he then matched three days later in UT’s win over ECU). Stout Defense Early On Tennessee’s defense has been outstanding through the Vols’ first three games ... The highlight thus far has been holding UNC Asheville without a field goal for the first 16:53 of the game Nov. 17 ... Tennessee also held the Bulldogs to .239 shooting from the field (16-of-67) and .063 shooting from long range (1-of-16) ... And in the Nov. 20 rout of East Carolina, the Vols turned 35 ECU turnovers into 50 points ... Through three games, UT’s opponents are hitting just 25.0 percent of their 3-point attempts.

The Saint Joseph’s Series Tennessee trails its all-time series with Saint Joseph’s 1-2, dating to 1948 ... The Hawks notched home wins in Philly in 1948 and 1998, but UT won the lone meeting in Knoxville by a score of 74-54 on Dec. 9, 1997.

Pearl Has Led UT To Three East Division Titles Despite playing in a division that boasts the NCAA’s all-time winningest program (Kentucky) and a Florida program that claimed two of the last four national championships, Tennessee has won three SEC Eastern Division crowns under fifth-year head coach Bruce Pearl ... Road success within divisional play has been key, as UT over the last four seasons owns a 13-7 (.650) divisional road record; no other SEC East team has more than nine such wins.
