Gouda City Hall 2006>2012 O novo prédio da prefeitura de Gouda faz parte do novo desenvolvimento da zona ferroviária da cidade. O edifício alude num “piscar de olhos” à tradição de Gouda, ao mesmo tempo que se enquadra na cidade do século XXI. No exterior, são usados temas tradicionais tal como o tijolo vermelho e os caixilhos de madeira brancos, ao mesmo tempo que, em termos de forma, o edifício reflete os grandes volumes retangulares das imediações. Os tijolos nas fachadas, são colocados deliberadamente de forma “não-tradicional”, sendo em vez disso aplicados em tiras diagonais pré-fabricadas que envolvem todo o edifício. O motivo diagonal se refere tanto à cidade antiga como à cidade nova e é também uma alusão a um símbolo típico de Gouda, o qual já originou o seu apelido de “Stroopwaffle*”. O interior do edifício se deveria tornar, a nosso ver, na ‘câmara do cidadão’, onde cidadãos e políticos se reúnem novamente, sendo inspirado nas origens Gregas da democracia. Na Atenas antiga, os cidadãos debatiam ao ar livre, num cenário semelhante a um teatro. O espaço da assembléia tomou assim a forma de um anfiteatro. Nos andares destinados a escritórios, são introduzidas novas maneiras de trabalhar, nas quais os funcionários já não têm a sua própria secretária, passando a ser livres de escolher o seu lugar de trabalho todas as manhãs, em algum local dentro do edifício. Os andares de escritórios estão todos ligados através de uma vide central, no qual se encontra uma escadaria aberta.
* Stroopwafel - significa “waffle em calda” e é um doce regional típico dessa cidade.
The new Gouda Town Hall is part of a new development around the railway station. The building is a wink to traditional Gouda and at the same times fits in the city of the twenty-first century. On the outside, traditional themes such as red brick and white wooden window frames are used, while the building, in terms of shape, fits in with the large rectangular volumes in the immediate vicinity. The bricks in the outer walls are not laid in a traditional way, but applied in prefabricated diagonal strips over the whole building. In this the diagonal motif refers to the old as well as the new city and is also an allusion to a typical symbol of Gouda, which has already led to its being nicknamed ‘The Syrup Waffle’. The interior of the building had to become ‘a citizen’s chamber’, where citizens and politicians are brought together again, inspired by the Greek origins of democracy. In ancient Athens, citizens debated in the open air in a theatre-like setting. The council chamber was therefore given the form of a dish without a lid, like an amphitheatre. On the office floors modern forms of working are introduced. Employees no longer have their own desk, but are free to choose a desk every morning, somewhere in the building. All office floors are linked with a central void, in which an open staircase is positioned.
