EDITOR' S LETTER
un' s out. School' s out. What do you have planned for summer? Morning surf and yoga on the beach? A European getaway or inspired road trip to destinations unknown? Maybe the idea of a cold glass of white on the patio as the sun sets is about as far as you' ll let your relaxed mind wander. Even as I type this letter, my eyes occasionally gaze outside, longing for a few seconds in the sun. Time to open the window. I' m pretty much a guy for all seasons, enjoying each in their own unique way. But there' s something about summertime that gets my heart pumping, sans the habitual morning intake of caffeine. Everyone seems to recharge as soon as the June gloom rolls back and the beaches suddenly bristle with volleyball, sunbathers and bons vivants. The days become longer, the home gets sandier, the guests start pouring in, dining goes al fresco¼ all ingredients of the perfect season. Just please don' t tell me when it' s fall¼ I' m holding out for an endless summer. When we started to plan this issue, we clearly

our favorite hot air balloon trips. Not only noteworthy for their amazing destinations, these aerial adventures deliver on first-class service and experience as well. Feeling the call of the wild? A luxury ranch could be in your future, thanks to some amazing real estate opportunities in parts of Colorado and Montana. How about a little spring cleaning, even if a few months too late? Thanks to interior designer and potter Jonathan Adler and the Brooklyn finds of contributing writer Denise Richards, we have a few modern makeover ideas for your home. Melinda O' Brien shares with us the incredible action photography of local artist Bo Bridges, including a preview of his new experiments in custom installations. Not to be missed. Also in this edition, enough dining experiences, local happenings and reading material to guide you through the summer. Enjoy. • Darren Elms

Annette Bening stars in a new interpretation of Euripides' classic Medea, the theatrical telling of the passionate and destructive affair between the mortal Greek hero Jason and the mystical and exotic title character. Croatian Lenka Udovicki, who has directed theatre and opera around the world, incorporates classical elements, such as a 12-woman chorus and on-stage musicians, into this stylized modern staging produced by UCLA Live. Written for an Athenian audience that was at the height of its Golden Age, Medea remains a potent critique of power. September 18 through October 18 at Royce Hall. For tickets, visit uclalive.org.

s a Southern California native I may be biased, but I personally feel that nowhere are the elements more alive than at the beach. Here, earth, air, water and the occasional bonfire converge so fluidly as to render the very atmosphere electric. Taking that bias even further, I dare say that nowhere do the homes pay such tribute to that phenomena as right here in the South Bay, where many homeowners display a taste for simple, elemental architecture that melds with the seascape, and interior design that marries impeccable textures and materials with a casual, eclectically earthy vibe that is the heart and soul of beach culture.

Residence 04 in Manhattan Beach, designed by Redondo beach architect Allen Wix, is a striking example of this aesthetic, merging classic Cap Cod inspired design elements with a customized layout that is at once spacious and intimate. Drawing inspiration from his own Southern California upbringing, interior designer Jeff Andrews of Jeff Andrews Design created interiors that marry warm, inviting colors with an airy, contemporary design sensibility that is undeniably born of this region. Andrews has more than ten years of experience creating entirely one-of-a-kind interiors in homes all over the world. With a roster of clients that includes actors Michael C. Hall and America Ferrera, his signature style incorporates the use of soothing monochromatic palettes, plush materials and both

sublime simplicity are actually from the ' 50s and ' 60s. Street lamps from 1910 were repurposed as pendant lights in the living room and staircase, further conveying that this is a home for one who moves through the world with a decidedly bohemian, almost itinerant curiosity. In the end, this ability to impart a home with the design sensibility that one is known for while also maintaining a sense of the individuals who will inhabit it is Andrews' crowning achievement time and time again, and especially here. The warm glow of the woods and ample natural light in the kitchen reverberates with the echoes of casually enjoyed meals and conversation, while an effortlessly studied arrangement of wildflowers and driftwood on the dining room table speaks of the sea air that breezes through the home and gives it life.
Spherical mirrors hanging from leather straps over a metallic basin elevate the simple act of hand washing by resembling large drops of water that bring a sense of the natural world in, while a pair of antlers and an almost prehistoric-looking lamp stand on a table in another room convey the reality that the home stands on ground far older than itself. A dramatic, mid-century modern inspired ergonomic chair in the master bedroom rests beside tables that resemble tree stumps, revealing that the enjoyment of both sleek modern design and a leisurely cup of coffee are not mutually exclusive. Dark woods and a long, plush sectional sofa before a pool table in the game room convey that this home is a haven for many, as do real-world elements such as a urinal and trough sink that, in the context of a private bathroom, are

almost whimsical. This easy relationship with the natural world is what many have come to expect from California ¹ in both its people and the environments they create. From its very inception Residence 04 was intended to be a testament to this reality, which is why, perhaps, it required the singular talents of designer Jeff Andrews to ensure that this aim was fully realized. • Designer: Jeff Andrews 323-227-9777 jeffandrews-design.com Architect: Allen Wix 310-318-3297 allenwix.com

Congratulations to the Class of 2009!
DE: Speaking of travels, I recently stayed at The Parker in Palm Springs and loved it. What are some of your favorite destinations? JA: My favorite hotel room is any of the ocean view rooms at The Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur. It ain' t the decor (which is rustic and lovely but not earth shattering). It' s the views! There is nothing more sublime than waking up and seeing the spectacular cliff top view. Big Sur is my favorite place on earth and The Post Ranch Inn has just the right sense of place. The architecture and design allows the natural beauty to dominate. I am also completely and totally obsessed with La Scalinatella hotel in Capri. The hotel lobby, with its tile floors and clovershaped windows and surreal objects, perfectly captures the dreamy quality of Capri. I love that each object, whether it' s a ' 60s ceramic stool shaped like a tassel or a gilded Baroque mirror, is carefully selected, beautiful, and improbable. I think about the lobby often while designing interiors ± the Scalinatella' s surreal spirit is inspiring and liberating. DE: In your company manifesto you say a home should make you happy. Any sage advice you would give our readers in need of a little design therapy? JA: My motto is, ª classical foundation, playful punctuationº . It' s the little gestures ± a bright orange lacquer tray, a needlepoint pillow that says ª Pillº , a vase covered in breasts ± that make a home fun and memorable. Personal style means walking in the front door of a home and feeling happy. Personal style means having a space that' s very comfy but that is filled with stuff that has personal meaning and created by passionate people.

The first Wally 80 to feature the flush deck and fixed keel combination, its teak deck, black sails, mast, and hull look absolutely amazing. Interior panels of cherry wood and carbon fiber blend with occasional stark whites and brilliant reds to create an elegantly aggressive and clean aura resonating the exterior styling. The effect successfully illustrates the inside/outside motif so many designers strive to achieve. The extra wide beam employed by

hanks especially to the extraordinary action sports imagery of professional photographer Bo Bridges, there is indeed sufficient evidence to suggest that living on the edge is as exciting as it seems. And for those of us who haven' t pulled off an inverted aerial on our snowboards lately (or ever, for that matter,) this is refreshing news Âą the type that can usher in a revitalized perspective on approaching new adventures in our own lives. Bridges' distinctively vigorous shots provide us spectators with a chance to dwell in a world of extreme maneuvers with the built-in bonus of not having to worry about breaking any of our own bones. While someone else does the dirty work, we get to bask in the glory, or at least the exhilaration, attached to the exploit. So if you' re looking for a thrill, check out this local artist' s unique portfolio of works at his gallery in Hermosa Beach. Your eyes will feast on death-defying antics like those found in Bridges' shots of motocross riders Travis Pastrana and Jeremy Stenberg. Guaranteed to conjure up images of a Ferris wheel running loose from its base, the morphed sequences in these images will play tricks on your visual perception. But, I promise, you won' t mind.

From behind his Canon camera ± the EOS Mark 111 and the new 5D are staples in his equipment bag ± Bridges captures exactly the right angle on the tattoo and just the necessary amount of golden brown flesh to strike a nerve without insulting any sensibilities. The flair with which he artfully carries out this balancing act has rendered his services invaluable to many marketing campaigns. Take the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas as an example. Bridges has produced, directed and shot this company' s ad campaigns for the last five years. By incorporating all walks of life into the ª Rehabº ads, he sets the stage for any given weekend during the summer at a hopping Vegas pool. Of course, there is always a bit of a twist to the tale. And the more I learn about Bridges, this doesn' t surprise me. With a spirited biography that reads a bit like that of an adrenaline junky, Bridges is certainly no stranger to adventure. As the son of a pilot in the Air Force, he moved almost every two years while growing up. To date, Bridges has lived in more than 20 different places within the United States and abroad. That, in and of itself, is a feat. In addition to participating in traditional team sports throughout his childhood, Bridges brought BMX and skateboarding into the mix to keep things interesting. But still his thirst for excitement was not completely quenched. Luckily, for a time, his family lived on a small lake in Florida and he had access to a boat. In a quest to simulate surfing at all costs, he started riding on anything he could attach to

Always the innovator, Bridges has begun to experiment with a newfangled custom installation service that allows prospective buyers the opportunity to see how an image would appear in a particular space before pulling the trigger on the purchase. Whether it involves arranging a triptych - complete with a mounted surfboard - in a games room or hanging a 12-foot by 9-foot action shot in a modern designed office, Bridges and his team are ready to help exhibit the art in the best way possible. And, when circumstances allow, Bridges wants to provide a patron with a visual before the actual installation is conducted. So, after reviewing pictures, measurements and overall design elements of the space that will house the imagery, Bridges offers recommendations on how to successfully integrate the piece into the area. Things like color, size and texture may be adjusted to complement the vibe of a room. Truly, where Bridges is concerned, there are no limits.

or build behind the boat. Coolers and pieces of plywood served as makeshift surfboards. Cut to Bridges competing as a wakeboarder and being ranked number one in his class in the state of Colorado. This accomplishment was followed up by yet another when he kept racing BMX and was ranked number one in his 12-year expert class in the state of Alabama. After retiring as a Colonel from the Air Force, Bridges' father accepted an international marketing job that took the family to Switzerland. Bridges spent his high school years there, using his weekends to travel through the Alps with friends by way of skis and snowboards. Back in the States at Miami University, he earned a BFA in Photography and a minor in Marine Biology. Already a licensed pilot by the time he received his degree, Bridges spent
well as year-round good weather.º Who could ask for anything more? Still, duty calls, and projects pull Bridges away to countless locations across the globe. A shoot that yielded some of the fondest memories for the photographer took place at Child' s Glacier in Cordova, Alaska, on the Copper River. Bridges described this adventure by first explaining that Child' s Glacier is anything but child' s play. In fact, it is one of the most active glaciers in the world. Apparently, it will shed ice or calve at any given time, producing waves upwards of 50 feet every so often. Bridges revealed, ª The two surfers I went to shoot at this location ride some of the largest waves in the world and 50 foot waves would have been a welcomed sight to them. To me, it was terrifying. ATELIERS GROW IN BROOKLYN contemporary furniture finds
by Denise Richards
ver since the first exhibition in 1989, the International Contemporary Fur-
niture Fair (ICFF) draws me to New York City annually. The first few exhibits were exciting, showcasing the most innovative products from around the world, as well as displaying the work of emerging new talent, by way of juried student shows. As the years passed, I continued to attend, more out of nostalgia than anticipation of discovering the next Holy Grail in furniture design. Things were sort of flat and expected without any real innovation. About 15 years ago, I heard rumors of some break away artisans who were leaving the congestion and expense of Manhattan to set-up shop in Brooklyn. I even ventured across that ª oft' soldº bridge to find these enclaves. However, those early years were often marked by disappointment. Heavy, nuevo ª Craftsmanesqueº tables and chairs¼ nothing new¼ or was there? Fast-forward to 2009, another trip to NYC for the ICFF and a venture beyond the Bridge to Brooklyn. Wow, have things changed! Not only is Brooklyn becoming more interesting, the small Craftsman community has burgeoned into ever expanding districts of artists and artisans, such as Williamsburg, Dumbo, and Red Hook. It was at the Williamsburg district that I discovered two of the most amazing artist I have seen in my 30-plus years in the design industry, Mary Kuzma and Tomas Tisch. Mary is an open, energetic mass of creativity. When it comes to furniture finishes, she is the best artisan I have ever seen. Knowing all about the Italians and the Japanese and the quality of their work, I would confidently add her name to the best of the best. This woman continues to create and invent finishes on wood, metal, glass¼ whatever. She is making the impossible both possible and beautiful.

Todd Klawin: You' ve built an impressive career as a leader in the eCommerce world. How did you first get involved in the space? people sense. How are luxury brands doing in the traditional markets today? BS: Most luxury brand are struggling with distribution as many of their best retail points of presence are having a very difficult time in this economy. Because of this, many brands are aggressively developing or expanding their Internet eCommerce presence because it allows them to more completely control the transaction, the proceeds and margins. TK: We are all learning to consume and transact in new ways these days. What can we expect to see next with eCommerce? BS: eCommerce needs to find its ª eCommerce 2.0º position. To date, most sites are still onedimensional, online catalogs and have yet to develop an approach beyond that. As a recent Entrepreneur-In-Residence at Clearstone Venture Partners I spent quite a bit of time on this. My original approach was to look at how community, content and commerce can together create a more compelling experience for the consumer and brands. Though I continue to see value in that approach, I now firmly believe that delivering multiple, fun and engaging ways to shop is the next power wave we will see from online sellers. For example, our new core PORTERO site will offer consumers a rich and well-merchandised eCommerce experience plus an exciting new auction event platform, allowing preview of items and multi-day auction events. TK: What' s next for you Bob? BS: During my nine months as interim CEO of PORTERO, I closed almost $7 million in venture funding, launched our new member only luxury sale site, PorteroPrivate.com and just this week launched our new core Portero.com market. We have just introduced our new CEO, Susan Engel, and I will shortly transition back to the Board. Next, personally, I' m looking forward to more time with my ª brideº Amy and our boys and less time on airplanes. Next in business? Stay tuned! I see an opportunity with distressed companies that can be bought and revitalized online with a smaller capital structure. But overall I love building and fixing great consumer companies and I see strong demand from large companies and brands to grow and drive their online presence. •

Propelling the hefty sedan to 60 miles per hour in just over five seconds is the 5.5-liter, 32-valve, 382-horsepower engine, which is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. This combination results in a 14 MPG city/22 MPG highway rating. With performance and equipment like this, the massively comfortable and well-equipped S550 gives reason to reconsider the purchase of an exotic sports car. Historically, what has made a Mercedes a Mercedes is the philosophy behind the Star: the car should feel as good 20 years on as it does the day you buy it. The body is exceedlingly stiff, with a silence factor rivaling a coffin and doors to make a bank vault jealous; the switches and controls inside feel solid without being hard to press or turn; the steering is tight at higher speeds aiding in a superior degree of control, while parallel parking is a single-finger spin-the-wheel affair. Properly equipped, the S-Class becomes even easier to park, thanks to a rear-mounted camera and sonar detectors alerting you to objects in your path and their striking distance. Overall, you feel rewarded and refreshed having driven the S550, which is something special in itself as not many cars provide such a sensation.
Owning an S550 would be an equally rewarding proposition, making everyday commutes something of a joy rather than a chore. And the Mercedes service plan will promise peace of mind year after year. Even when its warranty has expired, the Mercedes mantra of Service Forever promises that you' ll be able to keep your Benz on the road and looking stellar for years to come. Carefully crafted and artistically inspired, these much sought after creations are the heart and soul of this country's finest artisans. It's no wonder Caran d'Ache would choose haute horlogerie, as the inspiration for an exquisite, perfectly realized pen. Imagined in the Geneva workshop, the 1010 Limited Edition celebrates a precision and excellence that is uniquely of Swiss heritage. The name refers to the moment when the hands of a timepiece are in perfect balance at the top of the dial. The pen itself pays visual homage to the complications of watches with skeletonized case backs. The exterior cage draws inspiration from the bridges that support a watch's gear train and overlap an interior cage representing the complex mechanisms of watch movement. hen Louis the XVI commissioned the first untethered hot air balloon ride in Paris, France, in 1783, his aim was to realize the birth of an extraordinary means to showcase his glory, if not catapult France to the forefront of the scientific revolution. Now more than 200 years later, hot air balloon flight remains a time-honored reality, regardless of the fact that there are much faster ways to get from point a to point b. Therein, actually, lies the allure: there is quite possibly no more breathtaking a way to experience a locale than serenely suspended above it in a hot air balloon. to wax and wine rhapsodic in your overall impression of a wine, and seeing the world through rose-colored glasses means you' re doing exactly that. A lot of research and resultant controversy has gone into the notion of stemware shape. Does having a particular size or shape of vessel help to concentrate the aromatics of a wine in a meaningful way? The quick answer is ª yes,º though far less so than manufacturers of pricey crystal would have you believe. Be sensible. Don' t pour a big monster red wine into a tiny port glass, and don' t drink a delicate sipping wine out of a monstrously sized red wine balloon. The way in which oxygen interacts with wine to release its polyphenoldriven aromatics can be important but only in wines that merit that kind of analysis. Everyday wine should be drunk out of everyday wine glasses, period. At home, I favor Spiegelau crystal in a generic size for daily wine with dinner. I also keep sets of oversized Burgundy glasses (for better pinot noir, nebbiolo and the like), Bordeaux glasses (for big cabs and syrah), pretty little cordial glasses for fortified or dessert wines and, of course, good quality flutes for bubbles. If I have a dinner party with ª realº wines, it' s nice to set the table correctly with glassware for multiple wines. Otherwise, Mr. Sexton and I use a basic glass. of the time, folks, is cleanliness. I never ever use dish soap of any sort on wine glasses because that residue is difficult to fully remove.
The second reason one decants wine is to introduce oxygen into a very youthful wine. When a young wine is closed or not showing its aromatics well, you can either cellar it and wait another few years for oxygen and Father Time to S-L-O-W-L-Y works their softening wonders in the bottle, or you can impatiently open that shy bottle right away today, decant it back and forth a few times, and try to expedite the opening of those aromatics. Try this the next time you have a nicer bottle of recently released wine that seems kind of dull on the nose. Moving the wine back and forth between clean glass containers can really open up the aromatics in an adolescent wine. The third and final reason one decants wines is to ª bring the fancy.º Really. It' s the hallmark of a successful grape juice charlatan. Whether or not it enhances the physical enjoyment of a wine is secondary to the ritual delights of caring for a wine enough to serve it out of a decanter. Even the most humble of everyday reds gets a facelift when you pour it into and out of a lovely glass decanter. Service matters, at home as much as in restaurants, so bring the fancy once in a while and decant your wines. It adds to the ambience in a meaningful way. Last gadget you need: a wine opener that works. Don' t shred corks with one of those el cheapo corkscrews with wings that flap up and down on the rare occasion when they work at all. Either get a Pulltaps brand, the waiter' s BFF corkscrew with a Teflon ª worm,º (the curlicue part that actually screws down into the cork itself) or upgrade and buy the Rabbit, which is infallible if large. Corks made out of real cork are porous and crumbly and either of these two wine openers will help keep that organic stopper from shredding in the bottle. And hey,
ConCept • Collaboration • ConstruCtion Redefining the homebuilding and remodeling approach to suit your expectations and vision.
if you get a tiny speck of cork in your wine glass by some chance, don' t freak out and embarrass yourself. It' s akin to returning the banana because there was a tiny bit of stringy banana bit left on the fruit part after you peeled it. Nothing screams ª amateurº more than being a cork dork when you dine out, trust me. Buy the basics for your wine toolkit and save the rest of your discretionary income to upgrade your grape juice. Trust someone who' s worked in the business for well over a decade now and skip the bells and whistles of wine gadgets. As in restaurants, the steak is always worth more than the sizzle, so apply your dollars to better and more wine, not to accessories you genuinely don' t need.

want to eat better than McNuggets. Besides, what' s the point of living on the coast if you don' t actually take advantage of the scenic drives that others can only enviously glimpse in car commercials? And so we take the 101 to San Francisco, and when we' re especially at leisure for time, take PCH through Malibu up to Oxnard, too. Ironically, the best and worst part of coastal car tripping is Santa Barbara. Some of the worst, grind-your-soul away, stop-and-start traffic is to be found on a weekend rush hour at the dreaded Milpas exit in Santa Barbara. After suffering one particularly grueling 6 p.m. snarl with an unhappy teething infant in the car seat, Mr. Sexton and I vowed to either stop in Santa Barbara and enjoy it, or to henceforth avoid it entirely by taking the 5. Happily, Santa Barbara offers lots of great eating, strolling and stretching opportunities; while it may extend our drive time by two to three hours, all three of us arrive home happier when we stop there to relax and refuel.

delicious diversions I had every intention of doing cheap Wahoo' s fish tacos or upgrading to a simple bistro meal at Pierre Lafond on State Street the last time we stopped in Santa Barbara. But as we searched for parking, I noticed a sign outside a promising-looking patio that read ª Seagrassº and was thrilled to recognize my good friend Mitchell Sjerven' s second restaurant in Santa Barbara, which he opened in late 2007. I know Mitchell from working the annual ª World of Pinot Noirº summit the last few years, an event at which he tirelessly wrangles sommeliers from all over the country. Stun guns and lassoes might be more effective, but it' s really Mitchell' s charm and professionalism that rousts us all for those dreaded 7 a.m. shifts after too much late-night Champagne. (And good coffee from the angels at San Luis Obispo Coffee Co. helps quite a bit too.) Mitchell' s first Santa Barbara restaurant, the wildly popular Bouchon, was the restaurant where Mr. Sexton and I toasted our pregnancy news with both sets of our parents a few years ago. The memory of that fantastic meal made me eager to try the second outpost from Mitchell and his talented team. Seagrass has a lovely serenity to it that is reflected in its soft neutral décor and in the prompt but understated service. Mitchell has deep roots in the Santa Barbara community, and his personal commitment to sustainability and locally sourced foods is evident in the menu design at Seagrass. Featuring seasonal specialties like Santa Barbara spiny lobster and using only Pacific Ocean fish and shellfish from the local harbor implies both freshness and community support. As a charter member of the Sustainable Seafood Program at the Ty Warner Sea Center, Seagrass is a leader in responsible coastal cuisine. That philosophy also extends to the wine program at Seagrass, which reads like a ª who' s whoº of Santa Barbara County' s finest winemakers and appellations. While there are some international wines cheekily grouped into an ª Outsidersº portion of the wine list, the emphasis is again clearly local with favorites like Morgan Clendenen' s fine viognier made under the Cold Heaven label in the nearby Santa Rita Hills

and Palmina' s special white blend made just for Seagrass from grapes grown at Honea Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley. Both these local whites paired beautifully with the crispy chili-lime calamari we ordered as a starter. The fiery calamari was tempered nicely with mellow roasted garlic cloves, sweet cherry peppers and cooling lime wedges. Because I was excited about the spectrum of local wines offered by-the-glass at Seagrass, we worked backwards by choosing red pours first and then matching the entrées to those wines. Accordingly, I paired a lamb dish with my glass of Carhartt' s 2006 ª Faith Vineyardº sangiovese, a sustainably-farmed

plot in Santa Ynez that is also a promising microclimate for this Tuscan grape. The cranberry-pine aromas of the sangiovese BEAUTIFULLY mirrored the pomegranate-glazed lamb with organic rainbow swiss chard from BD Farms ± it was one of my top pairings this year for sure. Mr. Sexton drank a bit of a wine that was entirely new to me, from the Baehner Fournier estate vineyard in eastern Santa Ynez. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot, this ª V3º wine reminded me that this inland section of Santa Barbara County is certainly warm enough to ripen these Bordeaux grapes as effectively as Napa and Sonoma. Predictably, Mr. Sexton happily ordered the grilled 12 oz. New York steak with truffly spinach and tangy horseradish, two of his very favorite accompaniments to beef. His wife wishes to register an official, published complaint about spouses who relentlessly order meat in a seafood spot as elegant as Seagrass. But the steak paired with the V3 red blend was pretty darn tasty. We lingered longer than we meant to at dinner, as a pineapple upside down cake with pecan sauce and coconut ice cream felt appropriately tropical for a warm Santa Barbara night. I finished Mr. Sexton' s glass of red wine as he switched to iced tea for the rest of the drive home, a drive that featured a soundly sleeping baby and a fantastic moon reflected over the Pacific. We rolled into Topanga well after midnight with full bellies,
