VELKOMMEN TIL VOID INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FILM FESTIVAL 2018! PRAKTISK INFO Animationen blomstrer i hele verden, og VOID bringer et udvalg af den til biografer i København i festivalens ti dage. Igen i år kan man se på programmets over 100 film, at animation kan håndtere alt - lige fra rå humor til højaktuelle emner. I år er der endda flere danske instruktører repræsenteret end tidligere, med fire nye kortfilm: ‘1st day and next minute’ af Sara Koppel, ‘No Ozone’ af Kim Kim, ‘Ragnarok’ af Johan Oettinger og ‘Nothing Happens’ af Michelle og Uri Kranot. 2018 er også året hvor VOID tilføjer et nyt konkurrence-program: afgangsfilm. Udvalget fra verdens bedste skoler har været overvældende - og programmet vi kan præsentere er blevet vanvittig flot. Festivalen er kun mulig med hjælp fra alle vores frivillige, støtte fra en lang række samarbejdspartnere, og med økonomisk støtte fra større og mindre bidragydere. Stor tak til dem, og til jer, som vi kommer til at se som gæst på VOID. Animation is flourishing all over the world, and VOID brings a selection to cinemas in Copenhagen during the ten festival days. Once more, the programme of more than 100 films shows us that animation can handle anything – from raunchy comedy to pertinent issues. This year, we have had the chance to present more Danish directors than before, with four new shorts: ‘1st day and next minute’ by Sara Koppel, ‘No Ozone’ by Kim Kim, ‘Ragnarok’ by Johan Oettinger, and ‘Nothing Happens’ by Michelle and Uri Kranot. 2018 is also the year when VOID adds a new competition programme: Graduation Shorts. The selection from the world’s best schools have been overwhelming, and we are tremendously proud of the final programme. This festival is only possibly with the help of all our volunteers, support from a long list of collaborators, and with economic support from benefactors large and small. A huge thanks to them, and to you who will see as our guest during VOID.

VOID International Animation Film Festival varer 10 dage, fra 25. jan - 3. feb, og har visninger på to venues: Cinemateket i Det Danske Filminstitut og Gloria Biograf & Café. Fra fredag 26. jan 2. feb er der fyraftens-events på Café Nutid med gratis adgang. Alle film vises på engelsk eller med engelske undertekster. En biografbillet koster 85 kr, dog kan studerende og medlemmer af Cinemateket købe billetter til 50 kr. (medlemsrabat gælder kun ved visninger i Cinemateket). Det er muligt at købe et rabatkort, der giver 4 billetter for 3 billetters pris (255 kr), ubrugte klip refunderes ikke. OBS, billetter købt med rabatkort, medlemsrabat eller studerende-rabat kan kun købes i billetsalget, ikke online. Billetter kan kun købes i den biograf, hvor filmen vises, og billetter kan ikke reserveres på forhånd.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION VOID International Animation Film Festival is a 10 day festival from Jan 25th - Feb 3rd, with screenings in two venues: Cinemateket in the Danish Film Institute, and Gloria Biograf & Café. From Friday Jan 26th - Feb 2nd, there are after-work events at Café Nutid with free admission. Please note that all films are screened in English, or with English subtitles. One ticket costs 85 dkk, but students and members of Cinemateket can buy tickets for 50 dkk (membership discount only applies for screenings in Cinemateket). It is possible to buy a discount card, where you get 4 tickets for the price of 3 (255 dkk), any unused discount stubs are not refunded. Please note, that student and discount card tickets can only be bought in person, not online. Also notice, that tickets can only be bought at the ticket office of the cinema where the screening takes place, and that tickets cannot be reserved in advance.

Start the day by pulling away the curtain on some of the most extraordinary animation being made today. The Danish company Craft gives us some insights and key learning from a new online narrative format they created to share behind-the-scenes stories from animated productions. The session is for anyone interested in the workings of animation, and is a part of ‘Cinematekets morgentimer’ (morning sessions at the Cinematheque).

Welcome to animingling at Café Nutid, a volunteer driven café in the heart of Copenhagen. On workdays, (except Monday) there will be a presentation by animation professionals at Café Nutid after work. DA HENDES FAR ARRESTERES AF TALIBAN, FORKLÆDER DEN 11-ÅRIGE AFGHANSKE PIGE PARVANA SIG SOM DRENG FOR AT KUNNE FORSØRGE SIN FAMILIE I FADERENS FRAVÆR. Da hendes far arresteres af Taliban, forklæder den 11-årige afghanske pige Parvana sig som dreng for at kunne forsørge sin familie i faderens fravær. Det er den eneste måde, da det forventes at kvinderne bliver i hjemmet, afhængige af familiens mænd. Når hun ikke er på markedet, trøster Parvana sin lillebror med fortællingen om den onde Elefantkonge og den ene dreng, der trodsede tyrannen. Nora Twomeys instruktørdebut er produceret af det irske studie Cartoon Saloon, der også har stået bag ’Brendan og Hemmelighedernes Bog’ og ’Sangen fra Havet’. Filmen er et hudløst realistisk indblik i et mandschauvinistisk samfund og den forløsende kraft ved historiefortælling.

Nora Twomey’s directorial debut tells the story of the Afghan girl Parvana, who takes it upon herself to support her family after her father is arrested by the Taliban. The only way to do so is by disguising herself as a boy, as all women are expected to stay at home, dependent on the men of the family. Parvana quickly discovers storytelling as a means of comforting her younger brother whom she comforts with the tale of the evil Elephant King and the young boy, who stood up against the tyrant. ‘The Breadwinner’ is produced by Irish studio Cartoon Saloon (‘Secret of Kells’, ‘Song of the Sea’) and is a ruthlessly realistic look at a chauvinist society and the empowering effect of storytelling.

CINEMATEKET SATURDAY JAN 6 21:30 Verdens første malede spillefilm. Et hold af 125 kunstnere producerede de 65.000 håndmalede oliemalerier der udgør ‘Loving Vincent’. Resultatet er en svimlende og hypnotiserende beretning af Vincent van Goghs sidste dage. Vi følger den unge mand Arnauds forsøg på at viderebringe Vincents sidste brev til hans bror, Theo. Herfra dykker filmen ned i van Goghs død og dens mystiske omstændigheder. Gennem Arnauds samtaler med mennesker, der kendte ham – hvad end det var som geni eller galning – maler filmen et multifacetteret portræt af van Gogh, der i dag anses for en af historiens største kunstnere. Filmen gør brug af hans umiskendelige stil og resultatet er en drømmeagtig film hvis lige du aldrig før har set. 65.000 individual hand-painted oil paintings by 125 artists make up ‘Loving Vincent’, the world’s first painted feature film. The result is a dizzying and mesmerizing account of Vincent van Gogh final days, as the young man Arnaud tries to deliver the late Vincent’s final letter to his brother, Theo. The film delves into the mysterious circumstances of van Gogh’s death as Arnaud’s conversations with the people who knew him – be it as a madman or a genius - paint a multifaceted portrait of van Gogh, now revered as one of the greatest artists of all time. The film adopt van Gogh’s distinctive style and the result is a dreamlike film that is quite unlike anything else you will ever see.

KOM OG SYNG MED PÅ HJERTEVARMENDE KLASSIKERE SOM ‘MOUNTAIN TOWN Kom og syng med på hjertevarmende klassikere som ‘Mountain Town’, ‘Kyle’s mom’s a b***h’ og ‘Uncle F***a’ når vi i samarbejde med Cinemateket fejrer ‘South Park’s 20-års jubilæum med en sing- og swear-along af ‘South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut’. Da kvartetten af rapkæftede knægte fra flækken i Colorado sniger sig ind til en film, der er forbudt for børn, antænder forældrenes forargelse lunten til en krig mellem USA og Canada – og jordens undergang. Filmen er fuld af virtuose og vulgære sange, så sammen med Cartman, Stan, Kyle og Kenny skal der synges og svovles til den helt store guldmedalje – og kippes med det canadiske flag, når den amerikanske mødregruppe marcherer mod deres nordlige naboer til den Oscar-nominerede ’Blame Canada’.

Den aldrende Louise strander i en badeby i det nordvestlige Frankrig, da den forlades over vinteren. Hun føler imidlertid mere irritation end frygt over hendes knibe, og langsomt opbygger den ressourcestærke kvinde en ny eksistens blandt de efterladte huse og gamle minder om alt fra den første kærlighed til forældrenes svigt. Hun får følgeskab af hunden Pepper, der viser sig at være en vigtig samtalepartner – men dette er hverken ’Op’ eller ’Den røde skildpadde’. Filmen er et pastelfarvet karakterstudie, så alle med appetit på hæsblæsende action bør gå i en stor bue uden om dette charmerende take på fortællingen om Robinson Crusoe.

FRYGTEN FOR ATOMBOMBEN ER ALDRIG BLEVET UDTRYKT MERE TRØSTESLØST. Frygten for atombomben er aldrig blevet udtrykt mere trøstesløst. ’When the Wind Blows’ følger Jim og Hilda, et ældre britisk ægtepar på landet. Vi ser Jims optimistiske forberedelser og deres overlevelse af den første detonation. De forsøger at opretholde en facade af normalitet, mens de forgæves venter på hjælp og langsomt sygner hen af strålesyge. Filmen er baseret på en tegneserie af Raymond Briggs (Snemanden) og den nuttede stil står i stærk kontrast til det frygtelige indhold. Roger Waters and the Bleeding Heart Band skrev musikken til filmen, mens temasangen blev leveret af David Bowie.

The elderly Louise is marooned in a northwestern French seaside town, which has been deserted for the winter in this charming spin on Robinson Crusoe. Fear takes a backseat to annoyance as the resourceful lady slowly builds a new existence between the abandoned houses and old memories of the first love and neglectful parents. Accompanying her is the dog Pepper, who proves to be a valuable partner in conversation. But this is neither ‘The Red Turtle’ nor ‘Up’. ‘Louise en hiver’ is a pastel-colored slow burn and anyone hungry for frenetic action should stay clear of this charming and well-realized character study.

WHEN THE WIND BLOWS + PICA-DON United Kingdom, 1986 Director: Jimmy T. Murakami DCP 84 min

GLORIA FREDAG FEB 2 21:30 Nuclear holocaust has never been bleaker than in the tale of Jim and Hilda, an elderly British couple living in the British countryside. The film follows Jim’s optimistic preparations, their survival of the initial blast and subsequent slow deterioration from radiation sickness as they try to keep up appearances while waiting for help. The film is adapted from a graphic novel by Raymond Briggs (‘The Snowman’) and it retains his deceptively cutesy style as it delves directly into the horrors of the atomic bomb. David Bowie performs the title song and original score was written by Roger Waters and The Bleeding Heart Band.

DEN HÅNDTEGNEDE ‘ETHEL & ERNEST’ MARKERER ROGER MAINWOODS DEBUT SOM SPILLEFILMSINSTRUKTØR.

Jim Broadbent og Brenda Blethyn bringer varme og følsomhed til denne sande historie om et britisk ægtepar, der nærmest kan beskrives som en animeret Mike Leigh film. Vi følger dem fra Ernest gør kur i 1920’erne, gennem deres søns fødsel og prøvelserne i London under 2. verdenskrig, og frem til 70’erne. Det er et delikat portræt af hverdagen, fortalt uden stor fanfare eller hurlumhej, nøjagtigt som karaktererne ville have ønsket det. Den håndtegnede ‘Ethel & Ernest’ markerer Roger Mainwoods debut som spillefilmsinstruktør. Hans tidligere arbejde som animator indbefatter kultklassikeren ’Heavy Metal’ og ’When the Wind Blows’, ligeledes baseret på en tegneserie af Raymond Briggs.

The true story of the titular couple, voiced by great warmth and sensitivity by Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn, plays almost like a Mike Leigh film. We start Ernest’ wooing of Ethel in the 1920’s and are along for the birth of their son Raymond, through the trials in London during World War II, and to the 70’s. It is a slice of life in the truest sense of the word, told without much fuss or fanfare, just the way the gentle protagonists would have wanted it. The hand drawn ‘Ethel & Ernest’ marks the feature film debut of Roger Mainwood, whose previous work as an animator includes both ‘Heavy Metal’ and ‘When the Wind Blows’, also based on the work of Raymond Briggs.

Da den kreative og optimistiske Suzu, fylder 18, flytter hun fra landsbyen Eba til havnebyen Kure, 22 km fra Hiroshima. Året er 1944 og Stillehavskrigen tager til. I takt med at luftangreb bliver hyppigere og madrationering striksere, bliver flere og flere af mændene bliver hvervet. Kvinderne laver derfor deres traditionelle kimonoer om til mere praktisk beklædning, der er bedre egnet til deres nye opgaver i samfundet under forandring. Filmens historiske akkuratesse i fremstilling af Hiroshima i 30’erne og 40’erne er utroligt præcis og tilføjer en historisk dybde til filmen.

When the creative and optimistic Suzu turns 18, she moves from the rural town of Eba to the seaport Kure, 14 miles from Hiroshima. The year is 1944 and the Pacific war is escalating. The film is a sobering reminder of daily life during wartime and the profound effects it has on the soul of the citizenry. Air raids grow more frequent and foot rationing tighter as more men are drafted to the war effort. This leads Suzu and the other women to cutting their kimonos to fashion more practical clothing, better suited for their new roles in the changing society. The film’s depiction of pre-war Hiroshima is incredibly accurate, adding a poignancy and air of history to the film.

Akira vises i samarbejde med Ønskefilm i Cinemateket, og vises igen fredag d. 9. marts kl. 21.45. Akira is screened in cooperation with Cinemateket, and is screened again on Friday March 9th, 21.45.

Animeklassikeren vender tilbage til det store lærred. Motorcykler tegner røde lysspor efter sig mens de snor sig igennem Neo-Tokyo i denne banebrydende fremtidsvision. Det unge bandemedlem Tetsuo bortføres af militæret, hvis eksperimenter vækker psykiske kræfter i ham. Snart kan Tetsuo knuse tanks med tankens kraft, men den nyfundne magt begynder at overvælde ham – både mentalt og fysisk. Det er nu op til hans bedste ven Kaneda at sætte en stopper for Tetsuo, før Neo-Tokyo går til grunde for stedse. ’Akira’ er en actionfyldt milepæl i filmhistorien, der var med til at introducere anime til publikummer i vesten. 30 år senere er den stadig en eksplosiv knytnæve durk i sanseapparatet.

The anime classic returns to the big screen. Lights trace after motorbikes as they weave their way through the neonbathed metropolis of Neo-Tokyo in this extraordinary cyberpunk vision. The young gang member Tetsuo is abducted by the military and subjected to experiments that unlock psychic powers within him, but as his powers grow beyond his control, so does his taste for death and destruction. It is now up to his best friend Kaneda to stop Tetsuo’s rampage before Neo-Tokyo is annihilated. ‘Akira’ played a large part in introducing Western audiences to anime upon its release and it still stands as an astounding and explosive milestone in film history.

Det er sommer i Hiroshima og den unge dreng Gen og hans familie kæmper med manglen på mad, der er opstået som følge af Japans involvering i 2. verdenskrig. Filmens centrale sekvens, hvori Hiroshima bombes af det amerikanske militær, er uhyggeligt detaljeret i sin dvælende afbildning af eksplosionens effekt og står blandt de mest rystende i japansk film. Detonationen bliver ikke enden for Gen og hans mor samt nyfødte søster, der nu må prøve at klare sig i byens ruin. ’Barefoot Gen’ er en mavevendende antikrigserklæring, en filmisk slægtning til Isao Takahatas ’Grave of the Fireflies’.

It is the summer of 1945 and the young boy Gen lives in Hiroshima with his family, spending their time struggling to cope with the food shortage. The film’s central sequence depicts the nuclear bombing of the city on August 6 1945 in excruciating detail and is among the most harrowing in all of Japanese cinema. The blast is not the end of Gen and a few fellow citizens, including his mother and newborn sister, who must now try to survive in the hellish ruin of the city. ‘Barefoot Gen’ is a bloodcurdling and highly effective statement against the horrors of war, a cinematic relative of Isao Takahata’s ‘Grave of the Fireflies’.

Satoshi Kon’s final film is an exquisitely realized topsy-turvy science-fiction fantasy, which would daze even Christopher Nolan. Dreams and waking life start to meld when an experimental dream-sharing device is stolen and abused with disastrous consequences. It is up to psychotherapist Dr. Chiba and her in-dream alter ego Paprika to uncover the culprit and save the day. Kon was at the peak of his disorienting ability when he made ‘Paprika’. It is a display of almost limitless visual ingenuity that has to be seen to be believed, with images that are sure to burn themselves into the retinas of the audience. It is a dream of a film that we are happy to share.

Satoshi Kons sidste film er en udsøgt realiseret science-fiction fantasy, hvor vi ser instruktøren på sit højeste, desorienterende niveau. Drømme og virkelighed begynder at smelte sammen i denne svimlende film, der ville gøre selv Christopher Nolan rundtosset. Da skolen bombes flygter hun med nogle elever ud i natten, hvor de finder en grotte fra hendes historie. Linjerne mellem virkelighed og fantasi bliver hermed opløst og filmen glider ubesværet mellem stiliseret CGI og håndtegnet animation i dette stærke iranske udspil, der blev bandlyst i hjemlandet. ’Release from Heaven’ vandt tidligere på året ’Animation that Matters’-prisen på Cannes.

A female boarding school teacher in a war-torn land tells the students a childhood story of a warrior’s battle with a supernatural enemy. Seeking shelter after their school is bombed, she stumbles upon a cave from the story and the line between her imagination and reality becomes blurred. The film shifts between stylized CGI and hand-drawn animation in this stark film, which was banned in Iran due to its portrayal of the protagonist. It has since gone on to win the ‘Animation that Matters’ award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

En taxachauffør får oralsex af den unge prostituerede, Pari, hvis søn sidder på bagsædet. Han kører galt, da han til sin store forargelse ser sin datter holde i hånden med en mand på gaden. Scenen er dermed sat for et dybt politisk exposé af det seksuelle hykleri, der gennemvæder Irans hovedstad. Filmen følger fire unge iranere, heriblandt Pari, mens de navigerer livet i en by, hvor sex og korruption er en lige så stor del af dagligdagen som religiøse elites strikse dogmer. Filmen ville aldrig blive produceret i Iran med sådan et indhold, hvorfor den fortæller sin historie gennem en kombination af CGI og ekspressiv rotoscoping.

A taxi driver is receiving oral sex from a young prostitute, whose son is on the backseat, having been brought along as a smokescreen. He crashes his car upon seeing his daughter holding hands with an unknown man, infuriated and shocked by her behavior. And so the scene is set for a deeply political exposé of the sexual hypocrisy that permeates Iran’s capital. The film follows four young Iranians, the prostitute being one of them, as they navigate a city where sex and corruption are as much a part of daily life as the strict tenets espoused by the religious elite. The story is told through a combination of CGI and rotoscoping, bringing Tehran to life as a spiritual successor to ‘Persepolis’.

The struggling middle-aged actor Oh Jungu has to make what feels like a Sophie’s choice when he is offered both a permanent job as a professor and a well-payed role in a soap opera. Prioritizing the financial security of his family, he chooses teaching, but the stability of his new workplace is disrupted when a colleague is accused of sexually assaulting a student. Oh Jungu gets caught between a rock and a hard place and a nervous breakdown seems imminent. ‘I’ll just live in Bando’ was produced on an incredibly low budget. It is a pitch black comedy and bittersweet look at life with a simple yet highly expressive visual style.

WTF-faktoren er tårnhøje længe før plottet for alvor kommer i gear i den legendariske mangategner Osamu Tezukas X-ratede ‘Cleopatra’. Vi starter langt ude i fremtiden, hvor animerede hoveder er lagt oven på live action optagelser af skuespillere – og filmen bliver kun vildere derfra! En trio sendes tilbage i tiden til Cleopatras hof med det formål, at finde ud af hvad onde aliens’ ’Cleopatra-plan’ går ud på – men én af dem er mere interesseret i at score den egyptiske dronning. Deres ankomst falder sammen med en cigar-gnaskende Cæsars erobring af Egypten. Anakronismer og vanvittige indfald er der nok af i Tezukas ’Cleopatra’, et gonzo-kuriosum hans karriere, der fortjener at blive set.

The WTF-factor is mile high from the start in this piece of anime erotica from legendary manga artist Osamu Tezuka. We start in the far future, where animated heads are superimposed on actors in live action footage. A trio of intrepid heroes are sent back in time into the bodies of people at Cleopatra’s court. Their mission: To discover the origin of the so-called ‘Cleopatra Plan’, concocted by evil aliens! But one of our heroes is more interested in getting it on with Cleopatra. Their arrival coincides with a cigar-chomping Caesar’s conquest of Egypt and it only gets weirder from there! Tezuka’s ‘Cleopatra’ has to be seen to be believed.

These films are just a step to the side from Shorts I, into slightly more gritty, dreamy, spacy territory - but still not as bold and quirky as the Shorts III programme. Please note that we received more great films than we could possibly fit into a regular screening and the only solution was to make this a two-hour programme with a mid way break for refreshments. Short film programmes I and II may take you by the hand a little more than some of these films, but you will be rewarded for your curiosity with some free flowing animated ideas and some longer shorts that allow more complicated stories to unfold. It is going to be epic, so do not miss this short film cornucopia.

The students at The Animation Workshop in Viborg are some of the most talented animators in Denmark. These are their graduation films, fresh off the premiere in Viborg. All five films are screened both 19.30 and 20.30, and the duration of each screening is 30 minutes, tickets are 25 dkk. 23 Q&A

Q: Michelle, you’ve let us host the Copenhagen screening of this year’s graduation films from The Animation Workshop. After your students graduate, they are hired by animation companies, not only in Denmark, but all over the world. What happens in Viborg, that creates world-class animators? A: Well first, thanks for hosting the Copenhagen premier of The Animation Workshop: VIA University College’s graduation films again this year. As to what happens in Viborg… I would say that we are extremely fortunate to have such dedicated students, teachers and staff. There is an incredible feeling of everyone leaning in to do their best. The environment is one of helping each other to move forward and succeed, in terms of what success means to each individual. The teachers are from animation, VFX and games companies the world over, bringing in knowledge and skills from all these inspiring backgrounds certainly creates an engaging energy as well. Not to mention, Viborg is a peaceful place to focus on animation and CG Arts, which takes time and patience to learn. Q: There´s one director on each film, but I’m guessing the films take more than one person to make. What other positions are also filled by students? A: Occasionally, we have a solo project, made by just one artist, but usually our films are made in teams. The team size depends on the ambition of the project when pitched and the amount of students who nominate to work on it. The groups are first divided into story, design and RnD (research and development) teams and eventually cast into the main leading roles, Production Manager, Art Director, Technical Director, Pipeline Manager and Animation Lead and the artist roles Animators, CG Artist, and Background Painters. Most often, the students have a role that covers many tasks, as they are small teams with lot of assets to create and shots to complete.

Q: Say I am a young person wanting to study at TAW. What’s my best course of action? A: I would suggest going to life drawing and design classes to understand the fundamentals firstly. It is important to have basic grasp of anatomy, construction, gesture drawing, as well as color, light, and design principles. Then, I would suggest you experiment with storyboard, animation and CG and see which you like best. The Animation Workshop offers pre-schools to the Bachelor Programs, check out our Visual HF course and our Drawing Academy if you’re interested in taking a step into further training. Q: Say I am a company looking to recruit some of your students. What’s my best course of action? A: Our students graduate every year in January. Prior to that for about two weeks, we host company visits; companies present themselves, their upcoming projects and have recruiting sessions with the graduates. In addition, our 4th year students go on internship in the fall of every year. So, the recruiters can also meet the students seeking internship for the following fall as well. MUSIC VIDEO SHORTS CINEMATEKET LØRDAG JAN 27 21:30 Her er filmene som er i konkurrence om VOID Music Video Award 2018. Vi tilføjer et par surprise-kortfilm til programmets 60 minutters nye, animerede musikvideoer, og byder velkomment til en aften med musik fra mange forskellige genrer og visuals i lige så mange stilarter. Hold øje med de danske bidrag: videoen til ‘Andeby’ af Rasmus Seebach er instrueret af Josef Rasmussen & Dainius Vitkevicius. This is the competition programme for the VOID Music Video Award 2018. We are spicing up the one hour programme of new, animated music videos with several surprise shorts, join us for an evening of eclectic visuals and music of virtually every genre. Watch out for the Danish contributions: the video to ‘Andeby’ by Rasmus Seebach is directed by Josef Rasmussen & Dainius Vitkevicius. 28 BØRGE RING VICTORY LAP GLORIA LØRDAG JAN 27 17:00 Dette program af prisvindende kortfilm er udlånt til VOID International Animation Film Festival af Odense Film Festival, og det er intet mindre end et stykke dansk animations-historie. Børge Ring prisen, opkaldt efter den danske, Oscarvindende instruktør bag ‘Anna & Bella’ er indtil videre blevet uddelt på Odense Film Festival syv gange - til de syv, internationale kortfilm som vises denne aften.

Dét er svært at leve op til. Børge Ring Award er 10 år gammel, og i den periode har vi i Animationssammenslutningen sammen med Odense Film Festival arbejdet hårdt på at gøre prisen internationalt kendt og attraktiv. Det lykkes for nogle år siden, da The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science i Hollywood gjorde prisen Oscar-kvalificerende. Det var næsten samtidig med at Børge selv modtog en Windsor McKay Lifetime Achievement Award fra ASIFA Hollywood under deres årlige Annie Award uddeling. Det fortæller samtidig historien om, at Børge var langt mere anerkendt i udlandet end han nogensinde har været i Danmark.

VOID has borrowed this programme of award-winning shorts from Odense Film Festival, and it is nothing short of a slice of Danish animation history. The Børge Ring Award, named for the Danish, Oscar-winning director of ‘Anna and Bella’, has so far been awarded seven times at Odense Film Festival - to the seven animated short films that are screened on this evening.

Q&A med Søren Fleng, formand for Animationssammenslutningen ANIS Q: Søren, du er formand for ANIS, som står bag uddelingen af Børge Ring prisen på Odense Film Festival. Børge Ring er en af de helt store mestre indenfor dansk animation så det er på en måde indlysende, men: hvorfor blev prisen opkaldt efter lige præcis ham? A: Prisen er opkaldt efter Børge Ring da han har haft en helt speciel plads i ikke bare dansk animationsfilm-historie, men i den generelle danske filmhistorie. Børge Ring var den første dansker til at modtage en Oscar. Han modtog den i 1985, for sin animerede kortfilm ‘Anna & Bella’, som Børge Ring Award statuetten også er skulptureret efter. De fleste vil dog bedst huske Børges arbejde fra scenen i animationsfilmen ‘Valhalla’ hvor han både skrev musikken til og animerede sekvensen med Tjalfe, Røskva og Quark i en hytte af bark. Børge var nemlig lige så kendt jazz-musiker som han var kendt animator. Han spillede en forrygende kontrabas, og spillede i sine unge år bl.a. sammen med Svend Asmussen. Musikaliteten gik igen i hans legende tilgang til både animation og historiefortælling. Q: Der må været gået rigtig mange fantastiske film igennem juryens hænder. Hvornår er det allersværest for juryen at vælge? A: Som det måske er med enhver pris der uddeles på en festival, så er der også rigtig mange holdninger til, hvad “en film i Børge Rings ånd” betyder, og det har selvfølgelig givet en del diskussioner gennem årene, og specielt da Børges egne film er så fantastisk velfortalte.

Q: Der er sikkert lige så mange svar som der er mennesker, Søren, men vi er jo nysgerrige, så: Hvad ER det, animation kan? A: Børge Rings film er klassiske eksempler på hvad det er animation kan. Som andre former for filmfortælling ikke kan. Animation kan fortælle historier der arbejde på et andet abstraktionsniveau – og samtidig gøre det så klart, at selv meget komplicerede emner kan fortælles let, præcist og legende. I animationen kan man bearbejde udtrykket utrolig nøjagtigt, da der er arbejdet med hvert enkelt af de 24 billeder der skal vises for at frembringe ét sekunds film. Alt kan styres i de mindste detaljer. Samtidig er det kunstneriske udtryk frit - man kan bogstavelig talt animere med alle former, farver og materialer så animation kan også være en smuk sammensmeltning af flere kunstneriske udtryksformer, der sammen giver mening på et højere plan. Og da alt kan lade sig gøre, så kan animation også være utroligt sjovt og fantasifuld – noget som de fleste kan nikke genkendende til fra klassikerne, blandt andet Looney Tunes. Men animation kan også formidle svære problemstillinger, som kan være for voldsomme at fortælle i realfilm, og de senere år har der være flere fantastiske animerede dokumentarfilm der netop har brugt animation som effektiv udtryksform. Og Børge, ja han har en helt særlig sans for at blande det musikalske og legende med utrolig klar, præcis og vedkommende historiefortælling. En sand mester!
