American gets 13-year term for hitting 82-year-old Sikh man New York (IANS): An American man has been sentenced to 13 years in jail for hitting an elderly Sikh man outside a gurdwara in California, a media report said. On May 5, 2013, Gilbert Garcia beat up 82-year-old Piara Singh outside the Nanaksar Gurdwara in Fresno city with a steel rod while he was leaving the place after saying his daily prayers, The Fresno Bee newspaper reported on Tuesday. Singh was hospitalised for more than a week with head wounds, broken ribs and lung lacerations. After the attack on Singh, Garcia also made inflammatory remarks about Muslims, prosecutor Tim Donovan was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Garcia was arrested half-hour after the attack and has been under custody since the attack. “Justice has been served. Not only does the victim and his family have closure, but so does the entire

Sikh community because there was an acknowledgment that a hate crime occurred,” said Ike Grewal, a Sikh activist. “This was a totally senseless crime. We are hard working people who are part of the American fabric,” Grewal added. In December 2013, Garcia was sent to the state hospital after doctors in the jail concluded he was unable to assist in his defence. Garcia returned to the Fresno County Jail in November 2014 after doctors gave him clearance to appear in the court for the trial. "Garcia agreed to plead no contest to a felony charge of injuring an elderly person and admitted it was a hate crime," Donovan said.

Asha Bhosle-inspired $1.5m Indian restaurant in Britain London (IANS): Want to taste "Rahul Dev Burman chingri chaap"? Head to a new Indian restaurant -- inspired and coowned by legendary singer Asha Bhosle -- that was set to open for food lovers in Manchester this week, a media report said on Wednesday. The restaurant at the Peter Street displays portraits of Bhosle and her family, along with beaded fringing inspired by her stage c o s t u m e s a n d j e w e l l e r y, Manchester Evening News reported on Tuesday. Bhosle, 82, was to be among the guests at the VIP launch party. The restaurant wears a simple look with purple as accent colour. building and it cost two million pounds ($1.5 million) for its renovation. The bar on the first floor has been transformed into a big dining space. “We have tried to develop a contemporary atmosphere but the building is around 170-years-old, so we have tried to make sure we have restored it sympathetically,” Sue Potter, managing director of the restaurant’s parent company,

was quoted as saying. “We have used purple as an accent colour but otherwise we have kept to a quite neutral palette,” he added. “The ochre is quite an important part of our identity, referencing the saffron in Indian cookery and the burnt orange colours you see in a lot of Indian art work,” Potter noted. The menu is traditional Indian cuisine with many of the dishes has been named as a tribute to the singer’s connections and career. Apart from special curries like “ b h a r wa n t a n d o o r i a l o o”, “tandoori jhenga” and “murg masala”, the menu includes “Hare baingnan ka bharta” (one of Bhosle’s mother’s favourite dishes) and “Rahul Dev Burman chingri chaap” (a tribute to her late husband).

IOC announces five cities-bid for 2024 summer Olympics Geneva (IANS): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday announced that five cities were competing to host the Olympic Games 2024 after submitting their applications to the global body within the stipulated deadline. The five candidate cities are Budapest (Hungary), Hamburg (Germany), Los Angeles (United States), Paris (France), and Rome (Italy), reports Xinhua. "We are welcoming five outstanding and highly qualified candidate cities," said IOC president Thomas Bach. "In the new invitation process, the IOC learnt that all the candidates are embracing Olympic Agenda 2020 from their respective vision for the future of their city. Sustainability and legacy are the cornerstones of each candidature," Bach added. The Olympic Agenda 2020 offers the candidate cities the opportunity to reduce costs related to the candidature process. For instance, the number of presentations to be made by the cities has been reduced from nine to three. In addition, IOC is now covering the travel costs and accommodation of a number of delegates to the presentations made to the IOC, as well as costs related to the visit of the IOC Evaluation Commission. IOC will contribute S1.7 billion in cash and services to the organising committee for the Olympic Games 2024. In keeping with its commitment to good governance, transparency and ethics, following Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC on Wednesday published all the documents related to the candidature, marking the first time that the full package of documentation has been made public at the very outset of the process. IOC said it will continue to work in close collaboration with each candidate city to provide them with the best possible services and assistance in the lead-up to the election, by the full IOC membership, of the host city at the 130th IOC Session in Lima, Peru in 2017.

Gwadar district, are also suspected of involvement in other target killings in the area, Dawn online quoted Frontier Corps spokesman Khan Wasey as saying. The suspects belong to a banned militant organisation operating in the area, he said.

They were arrested during military operations that were conducted in the area. The attack took place on August 30 at Jiwani airport in Balochistan when militants opened fire at the airport's radar system which left two engineers dead.

The team called on Indrani — who is a British national since the past few years — to enquire whether she required any help and the facilities she has been given in prison, as part of the mission’s normal procedures for British citizens living or working abroad. Earlier, the deputy high commission team was denied access and asked to get clearance from the union home ministry. Officials from the British

Indrani, the wife of former media tycoon Peter Mukerjea, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyamvar Rai have been charged with the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora in April 2012. The trio — accused of

killing Sheena and then dumping her partially burnt body in the forests near Gagode in Raigad district of Maharashtra — is currently in judicial custody till September 21. While police were yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder, investigators are probing the wealth and property angle as one of the possible causes.

Move UN over Sri Lanka war crimes, demands Tamil Nadu chose to support Sri Lanka in this regard, following reports that said the US was now proposing an internal probe by Sri Lanka against the alleged human rights violations and war crimes. Terming the US move "against natural justice", Jayalalithaa said the US had earlier demanded an international probe on the alleged war crimes and human rights violations committed in 2009. The assembly resolution comes a day after India and Sri Lanka agreed to boost cooperation in combating terrorism and working together for security and stability in the maritime

neighbourhood as Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe visited India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Wickremesinghe held talks in New Delhi on Tuesday. Jayalalithaa said India should move a strong resolution in the UNHRC alongwith the US to seek an international probe against those in Sri Lanka alleged to have committed war crimes and violated human rights. She also recalled the earlier resolutions passed in the assembly urging India to stop treating Sri Lanka as a friendly nation and to boycott the meeting of heads of Commonwealth

Public anger over Jhabua blasts subsided: Chouhan Bhopal (IANS): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday said the public anger that erupted after blasts in Jhabua district has subsided as people are satisfied the state government is working over their concerns. During a meeting of party officials for Bharatiya Janata Party's organisational elections, Chouhan said the tragedy that occurred in Jhabua's Petlawad town was the saddest incident of his life which has posed a challenge to the political leadership and administra-

tion. He said the people found prima facie guilty have been punished and a reward of Rs.1 lakh has been announced over the head of the main accused. "Our effort is to bring life in Petlawad town on track. A cancer affected child who lost his father in the incident is being sent to Ahmedabad for treatment. The government would bear the entire medical expenditure of the injured," Chouhan said. "A candle march has been taken out in Petlawad and the anger

has subsided. When I returned from there, people raised slogans to express thanks and satisfaction over my work," he added. He also condemned the Congress in strong words for "playing dirty politics on a human tragedy". A total of 88 people were killed and over 100 injured in a gas cylinder blast on Saturday in Petlawad town's Sethia Hotel and another blast in a nearby godown belonging to Rajendra Kaswa where explosives used in mining were stored.

Jayalalithaa also said the state government had insisted that it would not allow Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches to be staged in Chennai if the teams had Sri Lankan players. Research Advisory), a Comniscient Group company which has diversified interests in communication, media and brand analytics. The company conducted a report based on what it called a "36 Trait Matrix" to measure "brand attractiveness". Following Salman in the "attractiveness quotient" are

Amitabh, 72, and Shah Rukh, 49. Actress Deepika Padukone came fourth in the list dethroning Katrina Kaif, who was at the top among females when the list last came out. Following Deepika in this year's list are Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, Ranbir Kapoor, Hema Malini, Sachin Tendulkar, Aamir Khan and Virat Kohli. In total, 11 personalities from cinema and sports are included in the report. “While we often see attractiveness only in terms of physical beauty, it is much more. It is certainly not skin deep. True attractiveness is based on four foundations that are based on appeals of Rational, Emotional, Aspirational and Communication,” N. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA, said in a statement. (IANS)

Salman is Athiya's 'cool, good looking boss' ACTOR Suniel Shetty's daughter Athiya, who made her Bollywood acting debut with Salman Khan's co-production venture "Hero", finds the superstar “a very cool and good looking boss”. “He is not our teacher or a preacher. But he is our boss and a very cool and good looking boss,” Athiya told IANS. Directed by Nikhil Advani, "Hero", which released on September 11, is a remake of veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai's 1983 hit film of the same name. Athiya was seen along-

side actor Aditya Pancholi's son Sooraj in the film. Athiya feels acting can never be learned in a confined space of a film school, but on the sets and being in action. “We did workshop before our film started for three

months to get a better sense of our characters, script, scenes and worked a lot on that. But I feel that you don't need to go to a school to understand the craft as you learn with each film,” said Athiya, who went to a film school in New York. (IANS)

Fortunate to have Lataji sing for us: Yuvraaj Parashar ACTOR Yuvraaj Parashar says melody queen Lata Mangeshkar singing for "Dunno Y2... Life is a Moment" is like a "dream come true" for the team of the forthcoming film. "We are very fortunate that Lataji has blessed us again with the song in our film. It's a dream come true

for us," Yuvraaj, who stars in the film, told reporters on Monday. "Earlier, Lata Mangeshkar crooned the song 'Pal mein rishte badal jaate hain' for 'Dunno Y...Na Jaane Kyon'. And now, the song 'Jeena kya hai' in 'Dunno Y2...'. When she heard the scratch, she felt that this song is very

close to her heart," he said. The actor said she instantly gave a "positive nod". The film, which celebrates human rights, revolves around the love story of two boys - Aryan and Ashley. The musical romantic comedy also stars Kapil Sharma. (IANS)

ACTORS Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone on Tuesday launched the first song "Gajanana" from this year's most awaited movie, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus "Bajirai Mastani". The song, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, was sung by Sukhvinder Singh and choreographed by Vaibhabi Merchant. Ranveer and Deepika did the 'maha aarti' at the launch. "During Ganapati Visarjan, I always take part in the Ganapati song and dance. I have got into random processions even after becoming an actor. Vaibhavi calls me 'visarjan specialist'," Ranveer said. Ranveer and Deepika got delayed in reaching the venue. They apologised to the audience, as Ranveer said in a cheerful mood: "I was told that people have been waiting since 9 a.m. for us. But Deepika is so beautiful I would wait a lifetime for her." In reply, Deepika recalled that Bhansali used to get upset when the actors came late to the film set. Though there is a rumour that "Bajirao Mastani" will clash at the box office with Shah Rukh Khan's "Dilwale", Ranveer and Deepika said theyr were not disturbed. The "Piku" star said: "I don't under-

The cuss story of 'Yaara Silly Silly' SUBHASH Sehgal, who is returning to direction after over 15 years with "Yaara Silly Silly", is glad that he didn't have to lock horns with the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) to avoid the censor scissors. He notes the usage of cuss words is apt and integral in the film. "The story is woven around a red light area and the life of a prostitute. It could have not been possible without using the language they usually use, which consists of a lot of slang. We were apprehensive of how the censor board would react. "Contrary to what I thought, the panel was pretty accepting. They understood the requirement and agreed to pass the film without a single cut!" Subhash said in a statement. Featuring Parambrata Chatterjee and Paoli Dam, the film is slated to release on October 30. It is jointly produced by Reena Bhushan Suri and Neena Subhash Sehgal under the banner Movee Dreems. According to the statement, the jury called and asked him to remove the cuss words, but Subhash assured the jury that they go along with the content of the film. When the panellists saw the film, they kept the producers and director waiting for 45 minutes, but when they called, they appreciated it. (IANS)

stand the business perspective. I think there is a place for both films. Our job is to work just as an actor not to get into all this." Ranveer's comment was shorter and crisp: "I am an actor and can understand only acting. Can't say anything on clash." "Bajirao Mastani" narrates the story of Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao I, and his second

Junk food really does mess with your brain, makes it shrink SUDOKU

The part of the brain believed to be integral to learning, memory and mental health is smaller in people who regularly consume unhealthy foods such as sweet drinks, salty snacks and processed meats, new research has found.

"This is the first study to show that this also appears to be the case for humans,” Jacka noted.

Although the study was conducted in adults over 60 years of age, the researchers believe that the findings are relevant for people of all ages, including children.

The researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to measure the size of hippocampi (there are two in the brain - left and right) in Australian adults aged 60-64 years.

Modi visit disrupts life in Chandigarh Chandigarh (IANS): It is one regret and inquiry that the Chandigarh residents could certainly have done without. It was Narendra Modi's first ever visit - and that too for only four hours - to the City Beautiful after becoming the prime minister, but it led to closure of the city's main cremation ground, forced ambulances carrying patients on longer detours to reach hospitals, shut schools, made the most busy roads inaccessible to the common man and even saw opposition Congress leaders cooling heels in police lock-ups. A few families grieving for their near and dear ones were not even allowed to cremate their dead at the sector 25 cremation ground, forcing them to take the bodies either to neighbouring S.A.S. Nagar town in Punjab or Manimajra on city outskirts. The reason? Modi addressed a

public rally at a ground that lies next to the main cremation ground in sector 25 here. "There was death of a young one in family. As we were making funeral arrangements, we were told that the cremation ground in sector 25 was locked out due to the PM's visit. This is shocking! How can Modi and other authorities be so insensitive to the dead and their close ones? He preaches one thing and practices everything else," Gurmeet Singh, a city resident whose friend passed away on Friday, told IANS. The bereaved family finally took the body to adjoining S.A.S. Nagar for cremation. The Chandigarh Police and local authorities showed no sympathy for those who needed immediate medical attention too. To facilitate the prime minister's smooth movement on city

roads for the three events, even ambulances carrying patients were not spared. They were forced to take longer detours to ensure smooth passage for the PM's motorcade of nearly 100 vehicles. Ironically, Modi attended a convocation of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and told doctors to be "compassionate" to patients. Outside the auditorium where he preached,

All Punjab villages to have 4G connectivity: Sukhbir Badal Chandigarh (IANS): All villages in Punjab will be connected with 4G services by the end of this year, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said on Monday. Badal said that Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, whom he met in Mumbai on Monday, had assured him that all villages in Punjab will have 4G connectivity by December 28 this year. Punjab has over 12,000 villages. The state has a population of nearly 2.8 crore.

"Punjab would become the first state in the country to have broadband connectivity at the village level. Reliance had already invested Rs.3,500 crore in the state and would give employment to 30,000 people in the next few years," Badal said. Ambani said Reliance would provide low cost connectivity to students at 70 percent discounted rates. Badal said that Reliance had laid 7,000 km of fibre across the state to ensure 4G connectivity.

Modi's security paraphernalia ensured maximum restrictions on patients and their attendants. That was not all. Even before Modi arrived in the city, the Chandigarh Administration, in its own infinite wisdom, ordered nearly 200 schools to be closed on Friday. Even examinations in some institutions were postponed. As Modi's cavalcade zipped through the city roads, commuters, particularly on twowheelers and bicycles, faced the maximum harassment in hot weather. Traffic was blocked at several points in the 114 square km union territory. The resultant traffic snarls made matters worse for motorists. Modi, who lived in and around Chandigarh for a few years when he was a state-level BJP

leader and used to move around on a scooter, told the gathering at his rally that he was quite familiar with the city and its people and could even see old comrades in the gathering. He added that he could not meet them due to his new responsibility (as PM) and the attached security detail. As the common man suffered immensely in hosting Modi the prime minister, he offered a few lines of sympathy through his Twitter handle: "An inquiry will be held and responsibility will be fixed for the inconvenience caused to the people of Chandigarh." "The inconvenience caused to the citizens in Chandigarh, especially shutting of schools due to my visit, is regretted. It was totally avoidable." The fate of such inquiries is too well known to be even discussed.

Punjab to give facelift to Lala Lajpat Rai's village Chandigarh (IANS): To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of leading freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai, the Punjab government recently announced that his birthplace in the state's Moga district would be given a complete facelift. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday announced a complete facelift of Dhudike village, the birth place of Rai, in Moga at a cost of Rs. 14.39 crore. At a meeting of state government officials held here to finalise arrangements for the 150th anniversary, it was decided

that the facelift will include a slew of development works in the village, including construction of auditorium and installation of astroturf in the hockey stadium at the Lala Lajpat Rai Government College (LLRGC). Lala Lajpat Rai, popularly known as "Punjab Kesari", had led protests against the British rule during the freedom movement. During once such in 1928, he and other protestors were baton charged by the British forces in Lahore. He died later due to injuries sustained in the incident.

2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Award winning sedan goes from strength to strength By Autoreviewman For 2016, the Hyundai Sonata - the Korean automakers best-selling North American model has some changes to keep it at the top of its game. This new seventh-generation 2015 Sonata is, indeed the best by far. The exterior keeps its sleek coupe-like aerodynamic, and it is one of the better-looking family sedans out there with a more cohesive heft to the design. For 2016 the redesigned Sonata offers more features, additional driver assistance technologies and updated mechanicals and engineering. Fit and finish is also up to very high standards rivalling some luxury sedans costing many thousands of dollars more. The base engine in the Sonata is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder, howeverwe tested the new Hybrid Sonata version with its “Blue Drive” technology. The second generation Sonata Hybrid has been redesigned on every front and for the 2016 model year there will also be a plug-in version. The Sonata Hybrid has a ton of new fuel saving technologies, such a lighter lithium-ion battery pack, a smaller sized, more efficient and lighter engine/transmission unit, and major improvement in its regenerative braking system. The ‘Nu’ 2.0-litre unit that replace the old 2.4 liter engine is 6.5 per cent more efficient according to Hyundai. This new power plant develops, 154 hp with 40 lb-ft of torque, and is teamed up with a 67 horsepower producing electric motor for a net 193 horsepower. The Hybrid also uses a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission and offers a fuel economy figure of 5.9 L/100 km city and 5.3 highway. Note that the Hybrid has an estimated range of 1,100 km on a full tank of gas There are such niceties as frontdoor puddle lights along with proximity sensing keyless entry and pushbutton ignition, proximity-activated hands-free trunk opening, plus an eight-way poweradjustable driver's seat with lumbar support, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, rear parking sonar, LED turn signals integrated within the side mirror housings, and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) with Lane Change Assist (LCA) as well as Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). The top level Limited edition as tested also gains front sport seats, chrome door handles and offers an eight-inch high-resolution

touchscreen infotainment system featuring navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, an electrochromic autodimming rearview mirror with integrat-

ed HomeLink transceiver and compass, aluminum door scuff plates, rear seat HVAC ducts mounted in centre console, rear side window sunshades, plus lane

departure warning system The Sonata offers a spacious trunk. Whatever the road conditions and with a full complement of passengers, the Sonata offers a comfortable, classy ride and there are no complaints here. The Sonata just seems to get better with every generation. The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid range starts from a very competitive $26,649. The Limited edition with luxury and technology equipment list rivalling most premium sedans can be had starting from $33,799 plus freight, taxes and PDI. Whichever Sonata you buy- it’s a wise decision, however the hybrid version is still the real bargain here for the price. Highly recommended.

Indian American teen entrepreneur receives White House award Washington (IANS): Swetha Prabhakaran, an Indian American teen entrepreneur and founder CEO of Everybody Code Now!, received the prestigious 'Champions of Change' award at the White House on Tuesday. Prabhakaran, 15, a junior at Thomas Jefferson High School

for Science and Technology, in Virginia, founded non profit Everybody Code Now! to empower the next generation of youth to become engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs. "Under Swetha's direction, Everybody Code Now! has taught hundreds of students how to code and has raised

thousands of dollars for STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) activities in schools," the White House said. "Her mentorship programmes have transformed shy young girls into confident students, community leaders, and budding technologists," it said.

US cop’s assault of Indian grandfather: Mistrial declared Washington (IANS): A US judge has declared a mistrial in the federal trial of an Alabama police officer who slammed an Indian grandfather walking in his son’s neighbourhood leaving the 57-year-old man partially paralysed. The police officer, Eric Parker, 26, was charged with violating the civil rights under colour of law of Sureshbhai Patel during an incident on Feb 6, just six days after he had arrived from India to take care of his grandson. US District Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala declared mistrial after 12person jury trying Parker in a Huntsville, Alabama federal court informed her that they could not reach a verdict – which must be unanimous, Al.com reported. Based on the final note the jury sent to Haikala, no jury changed their position since delib-

erations began anew when an alternate juror was added on Thursday morning. Altogether, the new jury deliberated about 10 hours. Prosecutor Robert Posey said the US government will try the case against Parker again. “We plan to re-try the case and so another jury will get a chance to see this evidence and hear the testimony, Posey said. “We will let them decide. The Patel family, through attorney Hank Sherrod, declined to comment on the mistrial in an email to AL.com. A re-trial won’t be far in the future. Posey said federal law mandates the trial begin within 70 days, unless one side asks for a delay and it’s granted by the judge. “Our team is going to go back and huddle up and review, as you might

expect, everything that we’ve done and see if there’s anything we want to change, Posey said. “We were able to introduce all of our evidence. The jury got a chance to hear from the defendant. We’ll just look forward to the next time, he said. “Obviously some of them saw things our way and some of them didn’t. At the end of the day, we come back and try it again. We’ll see how that goes, said Parker’s attorney, Robert Tuten. The case has drawn international attention after video of the take down of Patel went viral. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley issued an apology to the government of India for the incident. In his apology, the governor described the actions taken by Parker as “excessive force.

Prabhakaran was among 11 young women selected by the White House as recipients of 'Champions of Change'. In addition to her passion for science and computers, Prabhakaran, who was born in Indianapolis, is an avid Bharatanatyam dancer. She did her Bharathanatya

Indian-origin engineer to be deported for stalking boss's daughter Sydney (IANS): An Indian-origin engineer in Australia has been fined $2,000 and ordered to be deported after he pleaded guilty to stalking his employer's daughter, a media report said. Indian-born Abhinav Singh, 33, who holds a Canadian passport, swamped the young colleague with hundreds of text messages, phone calls and voice messages in Queensland's Gladstone city and elsewhere despite warnings from police, gladstoneobserver.com.au reported on Monday. Singh pleaded guilty before the Gladstone Magistrates Court to stalking the woman between July 14 and August 28. "I am guilty, I plead guilty," Singh was quoted as saying during the hearing. Prosecutor Nina Sulzer told magistrate Mark Morrow that the man professed his love saying: "I have now officially declared a war to get ***** at any cost." Sulzer said the woman never expressed any romantic interest in Singh, but he went

through office records to get her mobile phone number. Singh twice went to the woman's family home and argued with her father, telling him he officially declared war. "She (the victim) believes he was living in fantasyland. She was in no way romantically inclined toward him and she sought the assistance of the police," Sulzer said. In response to a police email asking him to stop all contact with the woman, Singh said he would continue to pursue the woman until he got a message from her stating she did not love him. "I'm in love with *****. It's

Singh was later arrested by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and is now being held at a Queensland detention centre. 2015 Kia Rio 5 hatchback Review

Case in point of just how good Kia cars have become is evident in the recent compact top-line Rio5 SX five door hatchback that came our way recently. The Rio5 is a smart contemporary looking hatchback that is neatly – not over designed or so weird looking that it will look tacky in a few years. Instead, its pleasing lines are inoffensiveand will endure gracefully. A funto-drive car, the Rio has been constantly improved and updated. Pricing for the Rio5 starts from $14, 695- $16,323 for well- equipped based models. The Rio5 is powered by a 1.6-litre, fourcylinder engine, direct injection with variable intake, and produces 138 horsepower. Transmission is via a sixspeed automatic with manual mode and paddle shifters. It is just incredible

how much equipment and value our high spec Rio 5 SX with the auto transmission packed in. Standard features include Automatic climate control with ionizer, power locks, windows and heated mirrors, cruise control, heated

leather front seats, heated steering wheel with tilt/telescopic adjustment, smart key with push-button start, AM/FM/CD/MP3/satellite audio with six speakers, USB/Aux inputs and steering wheel-mounted controls, navigation,

No intention to offend anyone: A.R. Rahman on blasphemy controversy OSCAR-WINNING composer A.R. Rahman said on Monday that his “decision” to compose the music for the movie “Muhammad: The Messenger of God” was “in good faith” with no intentions to offend any religious group. Reacting to fatwa being issued against him over the film the musician refrained

from sharing his “spiritual experiences” of working on the film as it’s something “personal” to him. “This letter is for all those people, who have been aware of the recent events concerning me. I’m not a scholar of Islam. I follow the middle path and am part of traditionalist and part rationalist.

“I live in the western and eastern worlds and try to love all people for what they are, without judging them. I didn’t direct or produce the movie ‘Muhammad (PBUH), Messenger Of God.’. I just did the music. “My spiritual experiences of working on the film are very personal and I would prefer

not to share these,” Rahman shared through a letter posted on his official Facebook account. According to reports, a fatwa was issued against Rahman and well-known Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi for their involvement on the movie on the life Prophet Muhammed. A Mumbai-based Raza Academy issued a diktat asking Muslims to reject the film. As per a news report, the group’s general secretary Mohammed Saeed Noori said: “We are against the title. People may use it in a bad manner if they don’t like the film, which will mean an insult to the Prophet.” The musician, who is known as the ‘Mozart of Madras’, also noted that his decision to make music for the film was in good faith. “My decision to compose the music for this film was

made in good faith with no intentions of causing offence,” he shared. Rahman, who has hit the right notes with each of his compositions with examples like “O rey chhori” and “Tum tak”, went on to add that the conflict should be solved with grace and dignity, rather than resorting to violent methods. He added: “We are indeed fortunate and blessed to live in a country like India where reli-

gious freedom is practiced and where the aim of all communities is to live in peace and harmony sans confusion and violence. “Let us set a precedent in clearing conflict with grace and dignity and not trigger violence in words or actions.” It was also speculated that an event, which was schedule to be held in Delhi on Sunday, was cancelled due to the fatwa fallout. FROM her debut with "Gangster - A Love Story" in 2006 to playing effective roles in films like "Fashion", "Queen" and "Tanu Weds Manu", actress Kangana Ranaut is known for portraying women-centric characters on screen. She says the wave of feminism in Bollywood has moved from offbeat to mainstream. “The film industry has seen a good response from women oriented stories. My first film ‘Gangster’ was a woman-centric film. The woman was the protago-

nist. So was ‘Woh Lamhe’, but they were not given big platforms," Kangana recalled. “Now after films like ‘Queen’, ‘The Dirty Picture’ and ‘Kahaani’, these films are being given very big platforms and they have been considered the mainstream cinema," Kangana told IANS in an interview. "Their directors are being awarded at various shows, but earlier they weren’t a part of the mainstream... they were considered as offbeat cinema makers,” she

said. The National Award winning actress also pointed out that once upon a time, only "item numbers, comedy and action" were considered mainstream in Bollywood. "But now women-centric films have seen a good growth... it's an achievement,” she said. Kangana will next be seen in director Nikhil Advani's "Katti Batti" along with Imran Khan. The comedy thriller will release on Friday. (IANS)

What's in a name? Possibly a lot though you wouldn't know it from the title Mistress America. Quirky

summer blockbusters? Then settle in for the exploits of two wacky wayward young

women trying to "fit in" in modern New York. Toast of the Big Apple Brooke seems to have the world on a string while new arrival Tracy is anything but lively. Wideeyed Greta Gerwig lets it all hang out as this flamboyant

say anything lady who makes being a klutz seem chic while Lola Kirke seems

all innocent as the naive transplant. Brought together through their parents this pair form a very strange bond and embark on a series of restless adventures in madcap fashion. Be entertained for 85 minutes as the pair bond together before suffering var-

ious growing pains as their relationship develops. Uncertain twists and turns sees both characters grow over time. Followers of director cowriter Noah Baumach likely know what to expect from quirky characters and he does not disappoint here.

Fleshed out with a funny get together at an ultra modern home watch the temperatures rise as people learn new truths about each other in an intense flavourful way. Good performances all around by a uniformly youthful cast make Mistress America well worth visiting.

'Conviction, perseverance virtues to make path-breaking movies' "RA.ONE" and "Gulaab Gang" director Anubhav Sinha says "conviction" and "perseverance" are the virtues to make pathbreaking movies. At a masterclass at Subhash Ghai's Whistling Woods International film institute, Sinha said: "Conviction and perseverance are the two creative virtues in filmmaking. First is the belief in your work,

and second is doing something despite difficulties. "If one does that regardless of difficulties, then path-breaking movies can be made." He says whenever he meets "ace directors as well as colleagues who are doing good movies", it is like a celebration of cinema. On the work front, Sinha will begin shooting his next

project "Hunkaar", an action drama thriller set in the heart of Benaras (Varanasi). The commercial potboiler, starring Riteish Deshmukh and Abhay Deol in lead roles will be shot extensively in various locations of Benaras and Lucknow for over three months. Tutoring can relieve math anxiety in kids New York, Sep 9 (IANS) A one-on-one math tutoring programme can relieve anxiety about doing math problems in your kids, says a study by Indian-origin researchers. "The most exciting aspect of our findings is that cognitive tutoring not only improves performance, but is also anxiety-reducing," said the study's senior author Vinod Menon professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine in California, US. "It was surprising that we could, in fact, get remediation of math anxiety," Menon noted. Even if they are good at math, many children feel anxious about doing math problems. For some, the anxiety persists throughout life, discouraging them from pursuing advanced math and science classes as well as careers that rely on mathematical expertise. The study included 46 children in third grade. Before receiving tutoring, each child took a test that assessed his

or her level of math anxiety. The brain scans of the children with high levels of math anxiety showed activation in the brain's fear circuits and so-called "fear centre", or amygdala, before tutoring. Children then participated in an intensive, eight-week tutoring programme consisting of 22 lessons involving addition and subtraction problems. Tutors gave the lessons to each child individually. All of the children performed better on addition and subtraction problems after tutoring. The children who started the study with high levels of math anxiety had reduced anxiety after tutoring, while

London, Sep 16 (IANS) Highly diluted acetic acid, an active ingredient of household vinegar, could be an effective alternative agent to prevent infection and kill bacteria found in burn wounds, says new research. Burns are a common traumatic injury and prone to becoming infected due to loss of a normal skin barrier. Local infection of the burn wound and subsequent sepsis (blood poisoning) are key concerns for patients, with sepsis the leading cause of death among patients with burn wounds. "As resistance to antibiotics grows, we need to find ways to replace them with alternative topical agents that can kill

bacteria and help our burns patients,” explained one of the researchers Fenella Halstead from Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, Britain. "The evidence in this study offers great promise to be a cheap and effective measure to do just that," Halstead noted. Infections of burn wounds are difficult to treat with traditional antibiotics as they do not effectively reach the wound, and the infecting organisms are often highly antibiotic resistant. The study demonstrated that low concentrations of acetic acid can be used to clear the bacteria, and therefore could be used as alternatives to topical (surface

6 reasons you aren’t burning enough fat 1. Protein's the way to go: Are you getting enough protein? If you want to increase lean muscle in the body, you need to ensure that you eat enough protein. Tuna is an excellent source of protein as is yogurt, chicken breast, cheese, nuts and lentils. 2. Take strength training seriously: Many people often think that strength training isn't important enough when it comes to burning fat but they're mistaken. While your daily run is important, strength training is a type of physical exercise that uses resistance to build endurance and strength, and also burn fat. Experts recommend strength training at least twice a week. 3. Avoid emotional eating: If you're seriously consider-

ing going on a diet, strengthen your resolve and stick to it. Thinking that you'll allow yourself just that one nibble of dessert will not help you achieve your goal. Eat when you're hungry and not because an opportunity presents itself. And recognise those moments when you give in to emotional eating. 4. Keep challenging your body: Once you've made up your mind about your fitness goal, it is imperative that you chalk out a plan. This will help you stick to your timetable. And don't stick to the same routine every time. Incorporate different technique in your regime so that you don't get bored after a while. This way you will also keep challenging your body. 5. Maintain a food journal:

Keep a journal of everything that you eat. And this literally means every single bite. Very often, people don't realise the things they eat during the day — a bite from a co-workers lunch, a small piece of cake, a snack inbetween meals, i cola while travelling — and then wonder why they're finding it so tough to burn fat. 6. Never stay hungry for long: While keeping a close eye on the calories you're consuming is fine, don't go overboard and starve yourself either. The more you deprive your body for food, the more fat it will store, making your entire exercise of burning fat, very futile. Going hungry also means slowing down your metabolism — the last thing you want.

those in the low-math-anxiety group had no change in their anxiety levels. After tutoring, the fear circuits and amygdala were no longer activated in children who had begun the study with high math anxiety, confirming that tutoring ameliorated the anxiety itself, rather than providing the kids with a coping mechanism that relies on other brain circuits. "It is reassuring that we could actually help these children reduce anxiety by mere exposure to problems," the study's lead author Kaustubh Supekar from Stanford University noted. Shot putter Manpreet Kaur qualifies for Olympics Kolkata (IANS): Manpreet Kaur of Railways created a new national record in the women's shot put at the 55th National Open Athletic Championship here on Wednesday to qualify for next year's Rio Olympics. Manpreet registered a throw of 17.96 metres with her second attempt to smash the previous

record of 17.43m which was set by Harbans Kaur in 1997. "I had the qualification at the back of my mind and so wanted to do well here," Manpreet told media persons after the event. The athlete, whose last international competition was the 2010 Commonwealth Games, said surpassing the 17.96m

mark would not be a big deal. "I can do better, beating 17.96m is not a big deal. I did 18.60m in practice last Monday. My next target is to get close to 19m," she said. Manpreet, who clinched gold in her last nationals as well, trains under her husband Karamjeet Singh.

Speaking about her experience of being coached by the man she loves, Manpreet said light heartedly, "Daant zyada padati hain! (He scolds me a lot). However, advantage is that I can share things with him and tell him about the problems I am facing." The Punjab athlete, who is

currently training at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala, added that she will practice harder and will try to be at her best the 2016 Olympics. "I think I have to get close to 20m if I want to bag a medal at Rio, hopefully it will happen," she said.

Right time to resume India-Pakistan cricket: ICC president Hyderabad (IANS): International Cricket Council (ICC) president Zaheer Abbas on Tuesday said the whole world wants to see India and Pakistan play and it was the right time to resume the cricketing ties between the two countries. "The whole world wants India and Pakistan to play. I hope the time will come and we will start playing cricket. Whole world is looking for the Indo-Pak series, no doubt about it," Abbas, himself a former Pakistan cricketer and captain, told reporters here. "It's not just Pakistan wants to play India. India should also want to play against Pakistan. And if they play, this is the right time to start. As CEO Dave (Richardson) said, everybody is looking forward to seeing India-Pakistan play. People want to see IndoPak first, Ashes second," Abbas said. He said he was ready to

contribute in whatever manner he can to help the two neighbours resume the series. "If there's someone who I can see and convey the message, I will," he said when asked if he would hold talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Pakistan Cricket Board last week requested Abbas to exert his influence as the ICC president to persuade the Indian board to confirm the series in December. He also hoped that the BCCI would talk to the PCB to finalise the series proposed to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). "When I played cricket for my country in '69-70, I played against India after 18 years. So I hope it will start soon," he added. Zaheer is in Hyderabad at the invitation of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) for the

prize distribution of All India Moin-ud-Dowlah Gold Cup final being played between Hyderabad XI and India Cements here. The former Pakistan skipper, who was last here in 1997 to play against India Veterans, said Hyderabad has changed a lot. "Lot of changes in this place. It looks very beautiful. I have been noticing all the changes on my way here from the airport. Really enjoyed the traffic and the roads, your airport has become wonderful, looks like some place abroad. It's beautiful," he said. He said India's new Test skipper Virat Kohli is doing very well. "I'm hoping he'll become better. There should be aggression, why not. But the main thing is you need to beat somebody, not by talking but by performing on the field."

Fit again Vijay eyeing strong show against Protease New Delhi (IANS): Having recovered from a recurrent hamstring injury, Indian opener Murali Vijay is targetting a return to peak fitness before the home series against South Africa which starts early next month. Vijay injured his hamstring during the one-day

and T20 International series against Zimbabwe in July, which also forced him to miss the first Test against Sri Lanka last month. The Tamil Nadu batsman has been included in the 30player list for the preparatory camp that starts in Bangalore on September

21. While he is looking forward to taking on the South Africans, Vijay's sole focus right now is attaining his best physical shape. "I am getting better. I should be fully fit," Vijay was quoted as saying by bcci.tv on Wednesday. Vijay played the second

Test against Sri Lanka, scoring a gritty 82 in the second innings. But he injured his hamstring again during the 140-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane. "I had a chat with the physio before the second Test and we decided I could play since I had done my rehabilitation well during the break (after the Zimbabwe tour). And I never had any doubts about my batting," he recalled. "In the second or third over of the innings, I tweaked the hamstring again and when I pushed for a single, I realised something was wrong inside," he added. "I was struggling to run quick singles and twos. That's when I decided that I should be a little more posi-

tive. I didn't want to put Ajinkya under pressure and disturb his tempo." "I told Ajinkya, 'You stay at one end and anchor the innings like you have so far; I will take the risks'. I thought, even if I get out, Virat would be in next. He and Ajinkya are much fitter and can run hard between the wickets. I didn't want to disturb Ajinkya's rhythm because at that time his wicket was more crucial to the team than mine." Vijay was in good form during India's tour of South Africa in 2013. The 31-yearold is now relishing the prospect of producing another strong performance against the Proteas in Indian conditions. Recalling the series in

South Africa, Vijay said the innings he played in the Johannesburg Test went a long way in bringing about a turnaround in his career. "It was the 39 runs in the Johannesburg Test that turned things around for me. I could feel that I was batting well. That's what gave me confidence going into the Durban Test," he recalled. "I was under the pump and really wanted to come good. The ball was reversing in Durban and it helped that I play a lot of reverse swing back home at the domestic level,” he added. "It has been a great journey for me -- the last one and a half year. But the best of me is yet to come."

Always pressure to perform in India: Devvarman New Delhi (IANS): Tennis player Somdev Devvarman said there is always pressure to perform when playing in India. "There is always pressure to perform. If you are an Indian athlete, then you are liable to a lot of negative press. No matter what you do, there is always pressure to perform in India. That's just the way it is," said Devvarman, who will be playing in the Davis Cup World Group Playoff this weekend, here on Tuesday. "There is an upside to

that as well. We perform well, we are welcomed very nicely. This is something we have been experiencing for the past few years, it is at the back of

the mind." India will take on World No.1 Czech Republic from September 18 to 20 at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) complex. With a win, the hosts will enter the elite World Group. "We are improving for sure. Even I am getting better every time I play. Our team is definitely getting stronger. Hopefully, we will be able to get this tie and give ourselves a good shot at the World Group," said Devvarman.

2015 Lexus NX 200t F Sport Series 2: Highly impressive

By Autoreviewman The new Lexus NX 200T is an aggressively styled compact Cross over Utility Vehicle (CUV) designed to compete in the growing

sporty CUV market. It is a sleek, razor creased aggressive looking unit, powered as in our tester by a turbocharged 2 liter four-cylinder engine linked to a six speed auto-

matic gearbox with an AllWheel Drive system. It’s not cheap - our tester featured the $12,100 F-SPORT Series 2 options pack comprising of upgrades such as : reworked front

fascia with a mesh grille, sports side skirts, black mirrors, F Sport badging, F Sport fog lamps, power remote control rear hatch door, scuff plates, and Auto levelling system. The cabin of the NX is also a revelation, with a more sports coupe vibe than a CUV with its multi layered dash and cool metal trim detailing. There is a lot of technology and a plethora of impressive looking buttons, knobs and switches to control the high tech features. The F Sport Series adds interior features including power leather sport seats with raided stitching, aluminum sport pedals, aluminium trim pieces, FSport shift knob, a lateral G meter and 10 speakers audio system. There is a head-up display system on the upper dash, and an infotainment screen high up on the centre stack. A novel Wireless Charging tray is also available that can power up and charge

certain smartphones by just leaving them in the centre console mounted tray. Safety options include features such as: full 8 airbag complement, Lane Keeping Assist, PreCollision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a number of as standard features The small displacement 2 liter engine proved to be a real firecracker with its turbocharger spooling up to peak torque smoothly and rapidly with little turbo lag. Producing 235 horsepower at top flight, the four cylinder and sixspeed automatic gearbox work well together and providing a fairly widespread torque band. Driver enjoyment is also complemented by a semi manual shift option for the gearbox via the steeringwheel mounted shift paddles or side gate shifter option. Also note, the driver selectable standard Drive Mode Select

ECO/Normal/Sport option is enhanced on the FSport Series 2 package with a Sport S and S+ mode that tightens up throttle and transmission parameters for more performance on certain road and driving conditions. The end result is that the NX 200t comes across as a very competent, enjoyable and fun to drive luxury CUV that feels like a sport car. Yet it had four wheel drive, decent enough ground clearance and all the utility you would expect. Fuel economy is good also at (L/100KM) 10.8/8.8 – City/Hwy for the F SPORT. Not really a lot to complain about really. Although our tester jumped from a very reasonable base price of $41,450 to a scary $55,671 with the options pack, freight, PDI and various levies and taxes. Build quality on the NX200t looked flawless with tight panel gaps and no discernable issues. The cabin is superbly executed and although expensive for what it is with the optional F-Sport Series 2 option pack, the 2015 NX200t is a very impressive player in this field and I expect it to do very well. By Autoreviewman 2015 Lexus NX200t priced from $41,450. Price as tested - $55,671
