LOT 1 Large Decorative Ironwork Peacock Figure

$700 - 900

The Majestic Theatre, a Texas Icon

ince 1929, The Majestic Theatre has stood proudly as a landmark of San Antonio and one of the most famous and beautiful performing arts venues in the United States. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Majestic was designed by John Eberson combining elements of Baroque, Mission, and Mediterranean architectural traditions with the aim of transporting the patrons to a fantasy Mediterranean villa. Evidence of this is found throughout with elaborate ornamentation, statuary and architecture. Within, the walls become towers with windows of colorful glass, alongside luscious foliage flourishes atop balconies, arches and the famous bell tower. The iconic peacock looks over the theater as the vaulted ceiling is transformed into a living sky complete with stars that twinkle and clouds that drift.

Above the theater rises the equally historic Majestic Building, a twenty-story brick and stone structure that is topped by an incredible three-story, 3,500 square foot penthouse apartment. This magnificent residence was occupied until recently by a real estate magnate based in Texas and California who spared no expense in decorating the penthouse. Vogt Auction Galleries is proud to present the majority of these extraordinary pieces in this exciting public auction. 261 lots to include several pieces original to The Majestic, outstanding decor, accents, furniture, lighting, serving pieces, silver & glasswares, fine art, statuary, religious artifacts, rugs & tapestries, outdoor & garden pieces, and architectural accents. This landmark auction for a landmark of San Antonio history will be one to remember.

Circa 20th cent., Monterrey-style metal peacock figure with plume displayed, on plinth, presided as a dominant feature of the Majestic Penthouse looking over downtown San Antonio, Texas, 49 x 71 x 60 in.

The Majestic Theatre Peacock At the grand opening of the Majestic Theatre in 1929, the San Antonio Light billed it as having “one of the largest collections of stuffed birds in Texas”, including a rare white peacock (pictured left) that they described as being “the largest and most beautiful of the collection”. In the ninety years since the opening, the peacock has become synonymous as an icon for the theater and as such has been replaced three times. The current peacock, that sits prominently atop the balcony, was most recently replaced in 2017 and sits amongst a collection of twenty-eight taxidermy birds in the theater. | 210-865-8648

Spanish Colonial Renaissance During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the main influences of Spanish design came from the Renaissance’s revival of classical styles and the Islamic Moorish tradition. During this time, the Spanish also controlled large areas in the modern-day states of Texas, California and New Mexico and as such Spanish culture, traditions and style were implemented in those colonies. The style was known for decorative touches in intricate inlaying, gilding, carving and painting within gothic looking pieces. The style was revived through the 1920s and 1930s as the Hispanic population grew and people sought to blend their interiors and homes with historic influence.

The Cuzco School was a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in Cusco, Pero (the ancient capital of the Inca Empire) during the Colonial period in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The tradition originated following the 1534 Spanish conquest of Peru and is considered to be the first artistic center that systematically taught European artistic techniques in the Americas. The paintings are characterized by the use of exclusively religious subjects, their lack of perspective and the predominance of red, yellow and earth colors. Most paintings were created anonymously because of pre-Columbian traditions that define art as communal. The main purpose of the pieces was didactic.
