2012 has been a year of celebration, accomplishment, and planning for the future. During the 2012 program year we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Vogel Alcove and its rich history and the impact the organization has had on the lives of over 13,000 homeless children and families within the Dallas community. Vogel Alcove was awarded NAEYC Accreditation in 2012 and this is a major accomplishment and source of pride for the organization. Only 8% of all early childhood programs in the country are awarded this accreditation and meet the high quality standards it represents. We are proud of our managers and our staff for their hard work toward this achievement.

CEO/President

As we looked to the past with pride, we also look to the future with anticipation of the role the organization will play within the community over the next 25 years. During 2012, we developed a new brand promise for the organization which included a new logo. The logo is made up of a blue mother bird watching over her little ones in a warm, safe nest until they are ready and able to fly. This image was chosen because the meaning of Vogel in German and Yiddish is “Bird, and the nest represents the safe alcove the organization provides our children as we protect them and prepare them to soar. As we reflect on our celebrations and accomplishments in 2012, we would like to thank the organization’s board of directors for its commitment and strategic leadership, the many volunteers who have provided thousands of hours to help us achieve our mission, and our generous donors who make it possible for us to provide a program in which every child has a chance to soar!

Vogel Alcove, like the homeless kids we see every day, is ready to soar to meet the growing need of family homelessness. We can’t do it without your help. Please come see Vogel Alcove for yourself. Take a tour. Experience the energy here, as we make a difference in the lives of these children who need our help the most. Talk to our staff. See our plans for the future. Then look in your heart and decide if you will be part of our vision and our mission, on behalf of these very special children. When you give to Vogel Alcove, you are helping set the stage for the next era of enlightenment about homelessness. It won’t simply go away without the right solutions. Vogel Alcove is a powerful reminder that a solution does indeed exist.

The average family experiencing homelessness is headed by a single mother in her late twenties with two children.

In 2012, the poverty line for a family of four was $23,000. In Dallas, family homelessness has increased by 36% in the last two years alone.

36%

It is estimated that 11% of all American families are living below the poverty line, the highest level in a decade. As poverty increases, so does family homelessness.

In 2011–2012, Vogel Alcove started investigating ways to expand our services to more children while adding other programs such as after school care and weekend services. Board members and staff began researching the feasibility of moving to a larger building and the cost associated with this plan. A move to a larger facility would help our programs impact many more families.

The Graduate Benjamin is a 2-year-old who has been at Vogel since the age of approximately 9 months. He quickly settled into the nurturing world of a Vogel infant classroom. When it was time to “graduate” to a toddler class, his infant teacher supported his transition in a way that let him know that this, too, would be a safe and wonderful experience. She was right. He is thriving in the toddler classroom, but he starts each day with a dash into the arms of his infant teacher, moving to his “big boy room” after touching base with his first Vogel caregiver.

“I wonder what that’s like?” A first time volunteer was working with a group of our 2-year-old children. As she volunteered in the room, an older 2-year-old girl walked up to her and asked, “Do you live in a house?” The volunteer replied, “Yes, I do.” The intrigued child continued, “What color is your house?” The volunteer replied again, “I live in a white house.” The child replied, “I wonder what that is like” and walked away to play with others. The volunteer was impacted in a powerful way that day. She left with tears in her eyes … thoughts of the child in need, gratitude for all she had in her life, and a stronger desire to volunteer and make a difference at Vogel Alcove.

In 2011–2012 Vogel Alcove received in-kind donations of more than $100,000 that included items like diapers, wipes, clothing and toys.

The Holiday Store gives our families an opportunity to browse through a “store with new toys and clothes. This opportunity gives the families a chance to gather new items and wrap them for the holidays, so their children can take part in unwrapping presents. All of the items in our store are free to the families and are generously donated by the Dallas community.

Much excitement surrounded the celebration of Vogel Alcove’s 25th birthday in 2012. The record-setting 21st Annual Arts Performance Event proved to be memorable in more ways than one. The 2012 Arts Performance Event raised $2.6 million for Vogel Alcove: the most revenue ever generated in the event’s 21-year history! Traditionally responsible for securing more than half of Vogel Alcove’s annual operating budget, the May 2012 event was particularly successful for several reasons: • The very popular Sheryl Crow played to a sell-out crowd; • A special pre-concert celebration of Vogel Alcove’s 25th birthday, which included cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvres; • Event co-chairs Beth and Jim Gold and Ann and Lee Hobson worked tirelessly to raise money; and • Neiman Marcus continued its long-standing relationship with Vogel Alcove, raising more than $1.1 million.

Pat and Emmitt Smith presented a $25,000 check from their foundation, Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities.

Birthday Shoes! A 5-year-old little girl arrived to the center wearing a purple dress and sandals. Knowing that our children must wear closed-toe shoes, the teacher asked if we had a pair of socks and tennis shoes in the Resource Center that would fit her. We brought a few pairs to see which tennis shoes would fit her. The shoes that fit were purple like her dress and the socks were lavender. With a great big smile on her face the little girl said, “These are my birthday shoes!” I asked when her birthday was. She said with a smile, “TODAY!” I remarked, “You get to have a birthday party in your class today.” She said, “I have never had a birthday party!” and then skipped away with a smile in her new purple shoes. Andrew came to Vogel at age 20 months. Although he was developmentally on track, he was noted to have sensory difficulties. At the time, he was reluctant to engage in fun learning activities. Intensive work with his occupational therapist resulted in a much more engaged and relaxed young man. He was discharged from occupational therapy after a few months. At Vogel, occupational, physical, and speech therapies are generally funded by billing the child’s Medicaid. In Andrew’s case, however, Mom earned enough income from her contract job to make Andrew ineligible to receive Medicaid, but was still unable to afford privately purchased insurance. Insurance complications are no reason a child’s critical developmental programs should be held back, therefore, we enacted “Vogel Pay,” a system in which Vogel Alcove pays for the services needed that Medicaid might not cover. Without this early developmental intervention, Andrew's behavioral difficulties could have increased. Vogel Pay is a good investment in Andrew’s future. It’s also an investment in his mother’s future. With the flexible hours a contract job provides her, she has returned to school and is preparing for a new career.

VOGELALCOVE

AUXILIARY

The Auxiliary is an extension of Vogel Alcove created to strengthen the Alcove and diversify its support base. The Auxiliary provides hands-on volunteer opportunities, increased community awareness and additional fundraising for Vogel Alcove.

The Auxiliary members support events and plan activities to enrich the lives of the children and families of the Alcove. Some of the events include: Parties for the Children • Valentine’s Day • Pumpkin Patch • Sweet Shoppe for the Holiday Store To celebrate Vogel Alcove’s 25th birthday, The Auxiliary created a book of recipes to sell throughout the community. All proceeds from every purchase were donated directly to our childcare center. The cookbook even featured recipes from Dallas celebrity chefs, such as Kent Rathbun.

Ambassadors of Hope Awards Lunc heoN In October 2012, Vogel Alcove hosted its first awards luncheon at the Ritz Carlton, Dallas to officially celebrate the organization’s birthday. Author and motivator Christopher Gardner was the keynote speaker for this occasion. Widely known for his story of life as a homeless parent,

which inspired the motion picture “The Pursuit of Happyness,” starring Will Smith, Gardner was unwilling to give up on his son Chris, Jr. or his dreams of success. He was the perfect choice to help us celebrate the work Vogel Alcove has done over the past quarter-century in providing child care services to parents working to transition their families out of homelessness.

Honorary Chair Ebby Halliday as well as Event Chairs Dawn Budner and Tina Wasserman led the way in honoring the inaugural honorees.

I FEEL GREAT! It was a Wednesday morning when two young brothers, a toddler and a three-year-old, arrived at the center. Upon arrival the teachers noticed that the boys were pretty dirty and had been in the same clothing for a few days. Within a short period of time, a team of staff members (managers, teachers, resource staff, etc.) stepped in to bathe the boys and provide clean clothing. We also washed and combed out their tangled hair. Like all toddlers, the youngest child was just tolerating the “cleaning up” process. However, the three-year-old had a very different response. Feeling much better, the oldest boy put both arms up in the air, twirled around and said, “I feel GREAT, and my feet are HAPPY!”

In 2011–2012 Vogel Alcove launched the Patrons of the Hearts program. Individuals who donated $1,500 or more to Vogel Alcove were invited to attend special events with other members.
