Security Gates Added to Campus Grant funds from Synod of the Sun in Irving, Texas, Ryburn Motor Co. in Monticello and Toyota Motor Corp. were recently invested in improving security at the children’s home through the installation of two security gates. With the addition of the gates, staff will be better able to monitor visitors entering and leaving campus. People other than youth or staff will also be restricted from driving or parking on campus after business hours. “The Board of Directors has identified improvements in security as a priority for this year,” Paul Gardner, chairman, said. “We are pleased to be

A Message from Lyn For more than 40 years, Vera Lloyd has been a large part of my life and that of my family. Lyn Whaley, CEO Our two little boys loved climbing the big evergreen tree in the yard at 2200 Gaines Street, the home of Presbyterian Family Services. As teens they were models for photo shoots for Vera Lloyd print materials, since we weren’t allowed to use pictures of the residents. Now they are grown men with families of their own, and I will be retiring this year. Working for Vera Lloyd has been a labor of love. One of my greatest
joys has been the relationships developed with the wonderful people who support Vera Lloyd. Your sincere concern for hurting children and your appreciation for the work we do inspire the staff to work hard and strive for excellence. You have made my life richer, for having known each of you. I plan to see as many as I can this year, to thank you personally for your contributions to the progress we’ve made at Vera Lloyd. I know you will continue to be excited and involved in the life of this ministry, as Vera Lloyd moves forward with new leadership. Together we will pray that God’s perfect choice will be revealed to lead Vera Lloyd onward. Lyn Whaley CEO

Vera Lloyd Welcomes New Director of Development
Melissa Hendricks, CFRE, recently joined the staff of Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services as its Director of Development. Hendricks has worked in public relations and fund raising for close to 20 years, including employment at Pulaski Technical College, Centers for Youth and Families and St. Vincent Foundation. In those positions, she raised funds through special events, annual giving and foundation and government grants. “I’m excited to be part of Vera Lloyd. I look forward to meeting our donors and telling our supporters about how their gifts make a difference in the lives of children who live at Vera Lloyd, and for those who seek counseling from the Schmidt Center,” Hendricks said. We welcome Melissa to the Vera Lloyd family!

Leaving a Legacy with the Lulu Williamson Society “When I was young, I had a lot of people help me,” Jack Davis, 92, of Malvern, said, describing why he and his late wife decided to give a planned gift to Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services. Davis feels strongly that his gift will help young people who may not have positive role models, or an extended family who are active in their lives. “I look back at help from grandparents, aunts, uncles and I Jack Davis of Malvern know what a difference they made in my life,” Davis said. Davis has been a donor to Vera Lloyd for close to 20 years, even in years where he and his wife were living on small incomes. “I left National Lead Barium, where I worked for 28 years, one year shy of qualifying for my pension. My wife was an invalid for many years and I took
care of her, my father-in-law and my mother-inlaw,” Davis said. “Some months, all we had was my wife’s social security payment. I can’t say it was always easy.” During their 52 year marriage, the Davis’ provided housing for girls who were residents at Vera Lloyd and were in Malvern for activities at First Presbyterian Church. He and his wife were also close friends with an alumna of Vera Lloyd. He and his wife designated funds from mature war bonds purchased during World War II to Vera Lloyd, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and Goodland Academy in Oklahoma. Vera Lloyd is a beneficiary in Jack’s will, and two charitable gift annuities. “I’m pleased my wife and I decided together to do what we could to help young people,” he said. “We are happy that our gift will help boys and girls at Vera Lloyd.” For more information about how to help Vera Lloyd through a planned gift, contact Melissa Hendricks, Director of Development, at 501-666-8195.
Your Gifts Make a Difference! Many of you know the challenge of making sure your children are clothed, fed, cared for and prepared for school every day. You can imagine what it can be like to take care of 48 boys and girls every day at Vera Lloyd! Your support makes a huge difference in helping youth in our care do well in the classroom and in campus activities. Because of you, Vera Lloyd can provide toiletries, clothes, school supplies, nutritious meals, academic enrichment and recreational activities for youth. It’s easy to invest in the
lives of boys and girls at Vera Lloyd. You can give on-line by visiting veralloyd.org, click on “Make a Gift Now” and complete the on-line form. You can give a recurring gift that will automatically happen each month, quarter or year. You can designate your gift to specific programs and let us know if your gift is in honor or memory
of someone. You can also give by mail at Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services, 1501 North University Avenue, Suite 345, Little Rock, AR 72207 or by phone at 501-666-8195. “It can make such a difference to children in our care to know that someone they’ve never even met cares enough to invest in their lives,” Lyn Whaley, CEO, said. Jack Davis is a wonderful example of how friends of Vera Lloyd can continue their support well past their lifetime.
2013 Annual Report The Mission of Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services is to share Christ’s healing love with children, youth and families in crisis.
A YEAR IN REVIEW Donors and supporters of Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services helped make great things happen for the youth on our campus this year. Our highlights of 2013, thanks to you, are: ● The agency earned its accreditation from the Council on Accreditation, which will enable Vera Lloyd to diversify its funding sources. ● The 2nd Annual Turkey Trot 5k brought more than 130 people to campus and raised $10,000 for outdoor activities. ● Vera Lloyd welcomed Lillian Dee Davenport, Tommy Maxwell, Carolyn Peiserich, John Tipton Pugh, Sr., Judge Luevonda Ross and Doris Simmons to the agency board. The new van made possible by a grant from the Presbyterian Women (USA). ● Close to 70 women and several men attended Vera Lloyd’s 12th annual Pink Hat Day on April 20. Holmes Chapel Presbyterian Church earned the Traveling Hat Award for their work with youth at the children’s home. ● Vera Lloyd purchased a van through a Thank Offering grant from the Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The van is dedicated for use by the transitional living program for young adults ages 18 to 21. ● Grant funds from the Pines Presbytery and First Presbyterian Church of Fort Smith allowed Vera Lloyd to renovate the H. Leroy Acree Pavilion, which was rededicated last year and has been used frequently for outdoor activities. ● The Laurence E. Schmidt Counseling Center moved to a larger office space so more people in need can be served through the counseling center. Vera Lloyd also hired Jenny Caldwell, LCSW, as the Schmidt Center director.
Lives are Changing at Vera Lloyd “Since being at Vera Lloyd, I have been given a second chance in life to do what is right. Vera Lloyd has taught me the responsibilities of being a leader. Vera Lloyd has taught me how to be a role model and help others out. School was not important to me before I came here, so Vera Lloyd is helping me earn my GED before I leave.” “Since being at Vera Lloyd, I have learned that if I can wait on things the right way, or just ask, then maybe I can get things instead Our youth enjoying a night at the bowling lanes. of stealing. All that I have learned at Vera Lloyd, and hopefully when I come back to Vera Lloyd, it will be to visit.” -Demairreah R., age 16, Newport, reuniting with his family in March
Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services will be the recognized model for transforming and empowering children, youth and families. For more information on the programs of Vera Lloyd, please visit our website at www.veralloyd.org.
Who Are The Youth We Serve? Vera Lloyd accepts youth in Division of Youth Services or Division of Children and Family Services custody. Youth can come at any time, so a staff member is always on-call to meet caseworkers and help youth prepare to live at Vera Lloyd. Together, they document family history, past placement, circumstances requiring placement and medical needs. Rose Brewer, Admissions Director, said, “The children and youth who come to Vera Lloyd don’t always understand what is happening. They are leaving the only home situation they’ve ever known and are emotional and scared as they come into a place where they don’t know what to expect.” Many youth have been exposed to drug use, neglect, poverty and abuse. Most have not had a stable family environment and many lived in homes where neither parent was employed. They are often academically behind their peers and may have struggled with trauma and mental health or medical diagnoses. While at Vera Lloyd, these young men and women are provided shelter, security, nutritious meals, clothing, a stable family environment and an opportunity to excel academically and prepare to become responsible, productive adults. Forgiveness is Key to Happiness
Jenny Caldwell, LCSW
“Forgiveness is mandatory, reconciliation is optional.” -Lysa Terkeurst, Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions I recently read this book and this one sentence spoke volumes to me. Many people are full of guilt and resentment. In fact,
I see clients with these issues every day. As Christians, we often talk about the concept of grace but we tend to focus on our own sins and being forgiven of our sins. We often forget that part of grace is forgiving others for what they have done toward us or toward others. Forgiveness is not a feeling but a decision. It’s a conscious decision to let go of the past and the things “they” did to us. Forgiveness is necessary to move forward in our lives. It doesn’t mean that we forget those things and it doesn’t free others--or ourselves--from the consequences of bad behavior.
It does, however, benefit us to forgive others. Forgiveness can lead to healthier relationships with other people, less anxiety and stress, fewer symptoms of depression and greater spiritual and psychological well-being. Please contact me if you or someone you know is struggling with these issues. Don’t let the past hold you back! The Laurence E. Schmidt Counseling Center 1501 N. Donors Help Vera Lloyd Buy Bikes for Youth In the summer of 2013, Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services went social! Through the use of crowd funding, donors like you gave $650 for the purchase of five new bicycles for our youth. Crowdtilt.com, a crowd funding web site, allows people to fund a project or cause by donating small amounts of money to reach a larger goal. Through the use of Facebook and Twitter, several friends of Vera Lloyd helped us realize our goal of raising $650. We cannot thank them enough. These bicycles will allow our youth to enjoy God’s beautiful outdoors this summer and for many summers to come!
We would like to thank the following for their support: Ms. Susan Nichols Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Meadors Mr. & Mrs. John Dickins Mrs. Kathe Sumbles Mr. Jon McDonald Mr. & Mrs. Robert Pfautz Mr. & Mrs. Clark Mason Mr. & Mrs. Howard Woodyard
