Cover Art - Explanation

The cover art for my soundtrack illustrates my life. The silhouetted figure represents me, and my journey through life. The basketball hoop depicts my goals that I am trying to reach. The books symbolize the work I do in school and the stage of learning I am in now. The masks show my passion for theatre. I added wings to my body as a reference to one of the songs from my Life Soundtrack (I Believe I Can Fly). Also, I use it as a metaphor to show that the hard work and determination I put into everything I do (school, sports, and theatre) will give me wings to soar and achieve my goals.

Circle of Life

1

By: Elton John

From the day we arrive on the planet And blinking, step into the sun There's more to see than can ever be seen More to do than can ever be done There's far too much to take in here More to find than can ever be found But the sun rolling high Through the sapphire sky Keeps great and small on the endless round It's the Circle of Life And it moves us all Through despair and hope Through faith and love Till we find our place On the path unwinding In the Circle The Circle of Life It's the Circle of Life And it moves us all Through despair and hope Through faith and love Till we find our place On the path unwinding In the Circle The Circle of Life

2

Birth - Ordinary World I chose this song to represent my birth. The music is celebrating the beginning of a new life. From the moment I was born, I had "more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done" (John, 34). I had many lessons to learn and was ready to embark on my journey ahead under "the sun rolling high" and "the sapphire sky" (John, 7-8). The Circle of Life can also be used to describe my entrance into the "ordinary world". The lyrics foreshadow the hardships and joyous moments that I will have in my life, just as every "ordinary" person in the world: "...through despair and hope, through faith and love. Till we find our place, on the path unwinding" (Circle of Life, 12-15).

Imagine

By: John Lennon

Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try. No hell below us, above us only sky Imagine all the people living for today, imagine there's no countries. It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people living life in peace. You, you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people sharing all the world You, you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one.

Child's Life - Crossing the Threshold Imagine by John Lennon is a picture of a utopian society where: "there is no heaven", "no hell below us", "no countries", "nothing to kill or die for", "no religion"... (Lennon, 1-6). He genuinely believes that the world will someday be perfect and people will live in harmony. John Lennon considers himself a "dreamer" and hopes that he is "not the only one". It relates to my life as a child because kids are pure souls and dreamers that believe life is an imaginary world. In this sense, childrens' lives can be considered Crossing the Threshold since as they grow, they learn more about the "real world" and become products of society.

I Believe I Can Fly

By: R. Kelly

I used to think that I could not go on

If I can see it, then I can be it

And life was nothing but an awful song

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

But now I know the meaning of true love I'm leaning on the everlasting arms

[Chorus]

If I can see it, then I can do it If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

Hey, cause I believe in me, oh

[Chorus:] I believe I can fly

If I can see it, then I can do it (I can do it)

I believe I can touch the sky

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I think about it every night and day Spread my wings and fly away

[Chorus]

I believe I can soar I see me running through that open door

Hey, if I just spread my wings

I believe I can fly

I can fly

I believe I can fly

I can fly

I believe I can fly

I can fly, hey

See I was on the verge of breaking down

If I just spread my wings

Sometimes silence can seem so loud

I can fly-eye-eye-eye

There are miracles in life I must achieve

Hum, fly-eye-eye

But first I know it starts inside of me, oh

School & Sports - Tests/Challenges I chose the song I Believe I Can Fly by R. Kelly because it is inspirational and uplifting. One of my challenges in life is being able to believe in myself. No matter what life throws at me (whether it be in my personal life, sports, school or theatre), it is very important to believe that I can pass any obstacle on my way through hard work and determination: "If I can see it, then I can do it. If I just believe it, there's nothing to it. I believe I can fly" (R. Kelly, 5-7). I can accomplish anything I set my mind to, as long as I believe I can do it and I'm willing to put in all the effort to achieve it.

Remember the Name You ready?! Let's go! Yeah, for those of you that want to know what we're all about It's like this y'all (c'mon!) This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill Fifteen percent concentrated power of will Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain And a hundred percent reason to remember the name! Mike! - He doesn't need his name up in lights He just wants to be heard whether it's the beat or the mic He feels so unlike everybody else, alone In spite of the fact that some people still think that they know him But heck em, he knows the code It's not about the salary It's all about reality and making some noise Making the story - making sure his clique stays up That means when he puts it down Tak's picking it up! Let's go! Who the hell is he anyway? He never really talks much

By: Fort Minor

Never concerned with status but still leaving them star struck Humbled through opportunities given despite the fact That many misjudge him because he makes a living from writing raps Put it together himself, now the picture connects Never asking for someone's help, or to get some respect He's only focused on what he wrote, his will is beyond reach And now it all unfolds, the skill of an artist This is twenty percent skill Eighty percent fear Be a hundred percent clear cause Ryu is ill Who would've thought that he'd be the one to set the west in flames And I heard him wreck it with The Crystal Method, "Name Of The Game" Came back dropped Megadef, took em to church I like bleach man, why you had the stupidest verse? This dude is the truth, now everybody's giving him guest spots His stock's through the roof I heard he's with S. Dot!...

8

Theme Song I chose Remember the Name by Fort Minor as my theme song for two main reasons: the music and the lyrics. The dynamic and uplifting beat of the song makes me feel an adrenaline rush similar to my feelings before a tennis/basketball game, theatre performance and school test. The lyrics of Remember the Name represent my effort in everything I do: "Fifteen percent concentrated power of will, five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain. And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!" (Fort Minor, stanza 2). The song reminds me of a famous quote that says: "Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn't work hard." In my life (whether it be in basketball, tennis, theatre, or academics), I have always believed that hard work pays off. In basketball, because of my size and late development, I am always underestimated by coaches. To prove that I am worthy of playing time on the court, I have to work twice as hard as the others to stand out: "Dedicated to what they do and give a hundred percent... Nobody really knows how or why. He works so hard, it seems like he's never got time" (Fort Minor, stanza 7-8). This applies to the classroom as well. In order to be recognized by a teacher and to make a name for myself, I have to put all of my effort into every assignment given. This song illustrates my pain and willingness to prove myself in life.

Friends Will Be Friends

By: Queen

Another red letter day,

It's so easy now, cos you got friends you can trust,

So the pound has dropped and the children are creating,

Friends will be friends,

The other half ran away,

When you're in need of love they give you care and attention,

Taking all the cash and leaving you with the lumber,

Friends will be friends,

Got a pain in the chest,

When you're through with life and all hope is lost,

Doctors on strike what you need is a rest.

Hold out your hand cos friends will be friends right till the end.

It's not easy love, but you've got friends you can trust,

It's so easy now, cos you got friends you can trust,

Friends will be friends,

Friends will be friends,

When you're in need of love they give you care and attention,

When you're in need of love they give you care and attention,

Friends will be friends,

Friends will be friends,

When you're through with life and all hope is lost,

When you're through with life and all hope is lost,

Hold out your hand cos friends will be friends right till the end.

Hold out your hand cos friends will be friends right till the end.

Now it's a beautiful day,

Friends will be friends,

The postman delivered a letter from your lover,

When you're in need of love they give you care and attention,

Only a phone call away,

Friends will be friends,

You tried to track him down but somebody stole his number,

When you're through with life and all hope is lost,

As a matter of fact,

Hold out your hand cos right till the end -

You're getting used to life without him in your way.

Friends will be friends.

Making Friends - Allies Friends Will Be Friends by Queen is a song dedicated to the importance of having friends in your life. Every person needs love and understanding from the people that are closest to him/her: "When you are in need of love they give you care and attention. Friends will be friends" (Queen, 9-10). I believe that song perfectly fits the Allies stage of my life as they are the ones that can help me in the darkest moments: "When you're through with life and all hope is lost, hold out your hand cos friends will be friends till the end" (Queen, 11-12).

Thirteen

From: 13 the Musical

I’m Evan Goldman, I live at 224 West 92nd Street,

When do I get it?

No, you’re not ready!

in the heart of Manhattan. And my life just went to hell.

Thirteen!

No, it’s not time yet!

Picture me just another cool kid in NYC, near the park and the Met

All of the grown-up stuff?

No, it’s not right now!

Thirteen!

Wait until you’re older!

Life is sweet, Yankees in the Bronx, pretzels on the street,

How will I make it?

No, you’re not ready!

just how good can it get?

Thirteen!

No, it’s not time yet!

Who’d have guess Dad would meet a stewardess?

When am I old enough?

No, it’s not right now!

Mom’s depressed and her lawyers are mean

Why is the world feeling totally stranger?

Wait until you’re older!

Now I’m stressed, life is a disaster

Why are my friends acting totally weird?

No, you’re not ready!

And I’m cracking from the strain, going totally insane

Why do I feel like my life is in danger?

No, it’s not time yet!

And I’m just about to turn

Why do I feel like my brain disappeared?

No, it’s not right now!

Just about to turn

How can I get through a year of Spanish?

Wait until you’re older!

Just about to turn...

How can I not look dumb in track?

Homework

...Thirteen!

How can I gain 20 pounds by Friday?

Laundry

I want a dirt bike

How can I make my voice not crack?

Dishes

Thirteen!

I wanna fly, wanna run, wanna drive

Courses

I want to kill my mom!

Wanna get rich, wanna get drunk, wanna get out

Just settle down and hold your horses!

Thirteen!

Wanna get my braces off

...

I want a mustache!

Wanna get my nose pierced

Thirteen!

Wanna grow my hair long

I want a wonder bra

But all I keep hearing is

Thirteen!

Another Brick in the Wall

By: Pink Floyd

We don't need no education We don't need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the classroom Teachers leave them kids alone Hey teacher leave them kids alone All in all it's just another brick in the wall All in all you're just another brick in the wall I don't need no arms around me I don't need no drugs to calm me I have seen the writing on the wall Don't think I need anything at all No don't think I'll need anything at all All in all it was all just bricks in the wall All in all you were just bricks in the wall

14

Middle School - Ordeal Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd is a song that channels the voices of the young people who rebel against society, and particularly education. According to the lyrics, school is a place for "thought control" (Pink Floyd, 2) where kids are molded to follow the rules of society and are turned into "another brick in the wall" (Pink Floyd, 6). Although I don't consider myself a middle school rebel, I can understand the feelings and defiance of those who don't follow the rules, specifically those who defend their beliefs. On the contrary, I don't respect those who rebel just for the sake of being different or because they have everything they could ask for and their life is boring. This song can be regarded as the Ordeal in my life's journey because it is a time in my life when I am searching for myself and have to make choices: to follow the rules or disobey them.

Summertime

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong

Summertime and the livin' is easy Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high Oh, your daddy's rich and your ma is good-lookin' So hush, little baby; don't you cry

One of these mornings you're gonna rise up singing And you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky But till that morning, there ain't nothin' can harm you With daddy and mammy standin' by

One of these mornings you're gonna rise up singing And you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky But till that morning, there ain't nothin' can harm you With daddy and mammy standin' by

Heaven Hymn Heaven is a beautiful thing, people say, it’s up in the clouds, where the angels sing. But I truly believe, that you do not have to travel far, to find what you seek. To find Heaven on Earth, your heart is the compass that leads the way, through land, life, and surf. You soon realize, Heaven was always in your heart, not in your eyes. Heaven is not up in the clouds, or where the angels sing, it’s the place you love and know, where the bells of love and joy strongly ring.

By: Victor Kalev It’s the place where you can roam freely, light as a feather, you are not weighed down, you are not to be tethered. It’s where you are a bird that soars through the land, that glides into memories seen before, embedding them into the sand. Heaven is the place where you know you are not wrong, it’s the place you call home, the place where you belong.

18

Family - Back to the Known World My song describes the: "Heaven on Earth...where you know you are not wrong, it’s the place you call home, the place where you belong." My Known World and heaven on earth is my family because I know they will always be with me when I need them: in good and bad moments. Even if I am not on the right path in life, I know they will always be there for me, and help me get through the tough times. My family is my safe haven where I can come back and regain my strength, will, and faith.

Oh, the Places You'll Go!

By: Dr. Seuss

Congratulations!

...You'll be on your way up!

Today is your day.

You'll be seeing great sights!

You're off to Great Places!

You'll join the high fliers

You're off and away!

who soar to high heights.

You have brains in your head.

You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.

You have feet in your shoes

You'll come down from the Lurch with an unpleasant bump. And the chances are, then, that you'll be in a Slump. And when you're in a Slump, you're not in for much fun.

You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.

Un-slumping yourself

You're on your own. And you know what you know.

Wherever you fly, you'll be the best of the best.

And will you succeed?

And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go

Yes! You will, indeed!

Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care.

(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

Except when you don't Because, sometimes, you won't.

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

I'm sorry to say so

So...

but, sadly, it's true

You can steer yourself any direction you choose.

About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there." With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,

is not easily done...

you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.

and Hang-ups

be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray

And you may not find any

can happen to you.

or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,

you'll want to go down.

You can get all hung up

you're off to Great Places!

In that case, of course,

in a prickle-ly perch.

Today is your day!

you'll head straight out of town.

And your gang will fly on.

Your mountain is waiting.

...

You'll be left in a Lurch.

So...get on your way!

Future

20

For the rest of my time in middle school, I plan on maintaining straight A's (preferably A+'s) in all subjects, become an 8th grade A-Team starter in basketball, be ranked number 1 in the 2013-2014 tennis season, and take the lead role in a Theatre C play. Throughout high school, I aim to become a part of the tennis or basketball program (I haven't decided which sport I will choose yet) and make Varsity team by my Junior year, be a part of the theatre or a dance group at CHS, and hope to be one of the top 10 students in my class. After high school, I want to continue my education in college although I am still not sure what I want to major in. I chose Dr. Seuss's "Oh the Places You'll Go!" for my future because it is celebrating every graduate's accomplishments. The poem's humorous and yet wise metaphors for what the future holds for us makes it one of my favorite books. Also, Dr. Seuss's way of making new words has made me a fan of all of his works: "Wherever you go, you will top all the rest. Except when you don't because, sometimes, you won't. I'm sorry to say so but, sadly, it's true and Hang-ups can happen to you" (Seuss, 6). He paints a bright future and the mood of the piece is uplifting: "And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)" (Suess, 11). This poem perfectly relates to my feelings about the future - I am excited for what it holds in store for me.
