accounts prospered. However
CIVILIAN POLITICS AND PAKISTANI DEMOCRACY HAVE BEEN DOGGED BY CORRUPTION AND INEFFICIENCY. Alternating
periods of civilian and military rule have destabilised the country’s institutions and prevented it from fulfilling its potential. In the past year the situation has worsened. The right to freedom of speech,
particularly that of the press, has been curtailed; during the Easter holiday Pakistani students returning home found that text messages and the internet were being censored. There are unconfirmed reports of terrible harm done to those who too ardently voice opinions contrary to the ruling powers. Unfortunately, when press and the internet are censored, it is difficult for those in foreign countries to comprehend the scale of the situation.
