Week 8: Critics and Deconstruction

London cento anni dopo

After approximately fifty years of post- war migrations to North-America, scholars and critics inquire on the originality of ethnic cultural expression in Canada. According to the “straight line theory” proposed by Herbert Gans, the third generations recover the sense of belonging through the experience of symbols and stereotypes, such as food, language and fashion. As a result, their revival is ephemeral and very detached from the original concept of ethnic. As a consequence, the discrepancy between the stereotypes presented by media and literature and the symbolic ethnicity experienced by the new generations of Italian-Canadians, Greek-Canadians and MalteseCanadians is increasingly growing. The lack of topics in literature related to the present age, the strong attachment to the memories and the past and the reiteration of stereotyped models of immigrants and their culture, give rise to a philosophical debate on the abuse of cliché and the utility of a “community-oriented” cultural expression.

very well known in the English mainstream), are themselves a projection of the author, still on the ship between Italy and Canada. Similarly, Pan Bouyoucas’s first characters are considered his alter ego (immigrants of Greek background, outsiders in Canada), reason why his works succeeded with much difficulties. circle with a consequent alienation from the mainstream. The purpose of this week is to develop the students’ expertise to approach literary texts and compare them to critic materials and to be able to construct their own critic discourse based on the research instruments at their disposal.
