Beyond Contemporary Art, by artist and gallery owner, Etan Jonathan Ilfeld guides you through the constantly changing world of contemporary art, exploring the emergence of new media and concepts that stimulate new artistic creation. From apps to street art to the “artistic” performances of Anonymous, Etan Jonathan Ilfeld surveys the artists behind the current and future trends in art. We are sure you will like the new, slightly larger format and the great series design of these informative, illustrated guides. Our 3 fashion titles, Contemporary Fashion Stylists, History of Fashion: New Look to Now and Affordable Couture constitute the highlights of this autumn’s list: Fashion journalist and stylist Luanne McLean shares her expertise in fashion styling with inspirational profiles and practice advice. June Marsh’s history of fashion embraces over 60 years of creativeness, from the launch of Dior’s post war revolution to Alexander McQueen’s masterpieces and beyond. In Affordable Couture, Jemi Armstrong and Linda Arroz provide information and guidance on how to collect, wear, care for and find high end couture at reasonable cost. The contemporary art world has been transforming rapidly over the last decade, claiming new territories and assimilating novel creative practices. Video game art and iPhone art apps have appeared, street art has blossomed led by artists such as Banksy and Invader. Contemporary art is more networked than ever before with world capitals vying with each other for global market share. In this book, the author surveys the key concepts and ideas that have reverberated throughout the art world in the last decade by presenting the artists who have created them. From blockbuster museum exhibitions to influential art fairs and art-stars, the ever-expanding contemporary art world has become increasingly integrated into popular culture. While highlighting established artists such as Gerhard Richter, the book also includes emerging and mid-career artists whose work ranges widely. Artists such as Jeremy Wood who plots his movement across the globe through GPS tracking, Tatsuo Miyajima who does digital light displays and Eduardo Kac who does transgenic bio-art are among the international artists included. Often controversial, these artists push the boundaries of what would traditionally be considered art. This is a book of interest to students, critics, art historians and anyone interested in the contemporary art scene. 10 Principles of Architecture Ruth Slavid

Specifications: 245 x 190 mm (7 1/2 x 9 5/8 in) 192 pages with 150 illustrations Paperback Recommended retail price: £ 19.95 | ¤ 24.95 | US$ 29.95 ISBN 978-1-908126-28-3 20,000 words September 2012 Contents: Place Structure Function and flexibility Comfort Sustainability Legibility Light Sound Surface Details Key features: • clear explanations of each principle • useful checklists included for each chapter • illustrations to help illuminate each principle

The rules of architecture have been much discussed since the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius coined the trilogy firmitas, utilitas and venustas, most commonly translated as firmness, commodity and delight. Put in simple terms this means that a building should stand up and endure, that it should serve its function, and that it should give pleasure to its users and the wider community. Great buildings, like all great art, contain something that is impossible to define or pin down. But that greatness, in almost all cases, overlays the principles set out in this book. While one cannot guarantee that a building will be great, if all the principles are followed, you will avoid the pitfalls to which too many are subject. This new title in our 10 Principles series provides clear explanations of each tenet along with useful illustrations to help the reader to visualize what is being discussed. An experienced writer on this subject, Ruth Slavid presents an illuminating primer to the field that is accessible to students of architecture, architects, architectural historians or anyone interested in the principles behind the buildings that surround them. The author: Ruth Slavid is an author and freelance journalist specialising in architecture and construction. For many years, she worked at The Architect’s Journal. She is the author of Wood Architecture, Extreme Architecture and Micro: Very Small Buildings.

The popularity of the television series Mad Men has raised the public awareness of advertising firms and what may or may not happen behind the scenes. We all recognise advertising when we see it: it’s those bits that surround the editorial content in papers and magazines or that interrupt TV programmes or pop up on the websites you like to browse. Advertising is about creating a message about something (usually a product or service) and then getting it out to people in the hope that they will react to it in a particular way – which in all likelihood means ‘buying it’. Or put another way, it’s paid persuasive communication that uses the mass media to connect an identified sponsor – the person or company that pays for the ad – with its target audience. This new title in our 10 Principles series examines the key principles underlying all great advertising and shows the reader how to create dynamic, well-targeted adverts of their own. Engagingly written by journalist and critic, Robert Shore, this book provides the basic principles behind creating a successful advertisement. With clear explanations, illustrations and checklists for each chapter, the reader is guided through what goes into making an advertisement work. Aimed at students of advertising, media and popular culture as well as anyone who is trying to create effective ads for their organisation or business. The author: Robert Shore is a journalist and critic who has written widely on culture and media. He is a regular contributor to the Metro and has written for The Guardian and The Sunday Times. He was also deputy editor of Art Review.

Specifications: 245 x 190 mm (7 1/2 x 9 5/8 in) 192 pages with 120 illustrations Hardback Recommended retail price: £ 19.95 | ¤ 24.95 | US$ 35.00 ISBN 978-1-908126-25-2 35,000 words September 2012 Contents: What is the scientific method? How old is the earth? What do we need to know about genetics? How do species change through time? How do new species evolve? What does the pageant of life look like? What do we know about human evolution? What about creationism and intelligent design? How has evolution influenced modern society? Key features: • clear explanations of a complex subject • useful illustrations • engagingly written Also available in the same series: Exploring the Universe Exploring the Weather in spring 2013

16 | Science

The topic of evolution is both fascinating and controversial. Aimed at an educated reader who knows little about the topic and written in a clear, straightforward way, this book will explain the basic principles of evolutionary theory not only where it fits within science in general, but also the role it has played in the history of science itself and the reaction of society to the concept of evolution. In the public mind, human evolution and the controversies that surrounded it are seen as synonymous with the concept of evolutionary theory, but in fact the basic elements of evolution apply equally to humans, sponges, and geraniums. The author, an anthropologist with a specialty in evolutionary theory, discusses how evolution fits into the way we view the world and our fellow creatures. The book helps to answer questions such as ‘do all living things continue to evolve?’ and ‘what does it mean when they say that we share 96% of our genes with chimpanzees?’. Illuminating and engagingly written, Michael Park seeks to demystify this topic and to show how the thinking behind evolutionary theory has also been influential in a broader cultural context. Illustrated with numerous photographs, line drawings and charts, this book will serve as a primer for anyone interested in knowing more about this important area of science. The author: Michael Alan Park is a professor of anthropology at Central Connecticut State University. He lectures widely and has written numerous articles and books for both students and a popular readership including Anthropology: An Introduction and Human Antiquity: An Introduction to Physical Anthropology. This volume, based on rarely seen Russian archives, traces the history of the silent film poster in Russia, starting with a poster designed by Paul Assaturov (“Stenka Razin”, 1908) in the style of ancient naive Russian imagery to the latest, an advertisement for a silent movie by Yuri Pimenov from 1934. Full-page reproductions of 161 Russian silent film posters are presented here in chronological order.

The Belle Époque (Beautiful Era), which dates from the late nineteenth century to the start of World War I, was an incredible period of creative and scientific activity. Until his death in 1901 at the age of 36, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was one of its leading names. He exhibited with Vincent Van Gogh and was a friend of Oscar Wilde whom he met during his time in London. Creating literally thousands of artworks during his short life, the images that Toulouse-Lautrec created were evocative of the mood of that time.
