At the time, it was the junction of two great western roads, the Ingles Ferry and the Peppers Ferry trails. Today, two federal highways, Interstates

First Lady Mrs. Wilson, From Wytheville to The White House. It is not surprising that this Wytheville native made her way to the nation’s capital. Mrs. Wilson was a direct descendant of Pocahontas and her great great grandmother was a sister to Thomas Jefferson. Across the street, the Bolling Wilson Hotel, honors this historically significant Virginian. The boutique hotel includes 30 guest rooms, a restaurant, ballroom, outdoor dining, and rooftop bar.
One of the most eyecatching sights on Main Street, the “Big Pencil” has been a landmark for over 60 years at the Wytheville Office Supply. Constructed in the 1950s, it is made of metal and is approximately 30 feet long. Local flavor restaurant Skeeters is located right next door to a famous birthplace. antiques, unique gifts, artisan creations, clothing, jewelry, and many other items. New shops are opening all the time adding their own special flavor.
This walk also goes by the Historic Millwald Theatre which will soon return to being a center for cultural and educational activities and events.
There’s no shortage of creativity to enjoy. Three arts-related businesses give a glimpse into local talent. Formato Fine Arts is a women-led art gallery featuring exhibits of emerging and established local artists, exploring conceptual framework and bound-pushing ideology through mediums of painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and performance art. A center for all ages to connect with their creative spirit, Rose Cottage School of Art offers fine art and music lessons, camps, and paint nights, as well as hosting a variety of visiting artisans for workshops. Laurel Creek Pottery Gift Shop features handmade gifts by local artists and monthly workshops for all ages and abilities.
Across the street from Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park is the Wytheville Farmers Market. The remodeled historic building offers ample space for local farmers, food vendors, and artisans to offer their bounty year-round in an indoor and outdoor setting.
A couple of blocks from the downtown area, you will find two beautiful local parks. Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park offers shelters and picnic tables and is the home of the annual Chautauqua Festival in June. Withers Park was once a baseball field and now includes a walking track, playground and the Wall of Honor which includes the War Memorial, Wounded Warrior, Civic, and Sports Monuments. Bookended by the two parks, Wytheville’s Heritage Walk offers a brick path to connect the two areas and lead walkers on a stroll through the downtown.

Just a few blocks from this area are seven structures believed to be the oldest original buildings in Wytheville. Although changes have been made, all or part of the houses existed prior to or during the 1830’s. Several served as boarding houses to accommodate visitors who chose to “summer” in Wytheville in those days. Restoration work began in 1976 and continues today. You can find several interesting shops including The Farmer’s Daughter and Batiks Etctera & Sew What Fabrics, Wilderness Road World Trading Co. and the historic restaurant, Log House 1776. The Farmer’s Daughter features a creative variety of gifts, jewelry, apparel, and home décor. Batiks Etctera & Sew What Fabrics is a colorful shop with a wide selection of fabrics, patterns, and sewing/quilting accessories. Wilderness Road World Trading Co, located adjacent to the Log House 1776, includes an eclectic assortment of unique gift items and art.
Edith Bolling Wilson Mural This mural located downtown honors the life of Wytheville native and United States First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson. The 100-foot mural, titled “From Wytheville to The White House,” features eight significant scenes drawing from events of Mrs. Wilson’s life, including her birth, Native American ancestry, life as First Lady, her last visit to Wytheville at the age of 88, and her death in 1961. It was created by artist, Andrew Williams.
The 1776 Log House Restaurant Tragedy On October 12th, 2021 the historic structure of this beloved restaurant caught fire. Thankfully, because of the quick and proper response of our local fire departments, the bulk of the building was saved. Rebuilding is underway with plans to reopen the Log House sometime in 2022. Stay tuned for more details about the reopening.

HISTORICAL SITES Throughout Wytheville and Wythe County, a variety of significant historic properties still stand offering a glimpse into the past. Overlooking the New River, the Historic Shot Tower was completed in 1807 to make ammunition for the firearms of the early settlers. Lead from the nearby Austinville Mines was melted in a kettle atop the 75-foot tower and poured through a sieve, falling through the tower and an additional 75-foot shaft beneath the tower into a kettle of water. A nearby monument honors native son Stephen F. Austin who would later be known as the “Father of Texas”. Seasonally open, The Mansion at Fort Chiswell was built in 1839-40 by brothers Stephen McGavock and James Cloyd McGavock. Over 300,000 sand bricks were commissioned for the impressive structure which now sits within view of Interstates 77 & 81. Five locations on the Virginia Civil War Trails mark the route of Toland’s Raid and offer a beautiful scenic drive between locations. Built in the 1860s by the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, the Rural Retreat Depot is now used as a museum and event venue, including being the home of the town’s farmers market. In neighboring Bland County, Wolf Creek Indian Village & Museum has meticulously reconstructed wigwams to match the layout of an excavation dating to 1215 A.D. Guides demonstrate living skills through the use of handmade replicas of tools and containers, hides, and various crafts.

Millwald Theatre
Renova tions Under way
Theatre Today
The Historic Millwald Theatre Grand Re-Opening - Coming Soon! Construction is on schedule, with a project completion date in July 2022 & a tentative opening date in mid to late September 2022. For decades, the Millwald Theatre on Main Street served as the cultural and social center of Wytheville, Virginia. Built in 1928, and more than just a movie house, the theatre hosted pageants, rallies, community events, debates, fundraisers, and even an opera and a film festival during its long run. In 2003, the Millwald celebrated its 75th anniversary and was hailed as “Virginia’s longest continuously-running theater.” Unfortunately, it would succumb to its competition just three years later. The future of the Millwald is inextricably linked to its past as currently a multi-million dollar restoration project is underway to return it to its roots as a multi-purpose hub of arts and community, so that this piece of living history can once again thrive & serve visitors in our area.
• •
The restored Millwald Theatre will become the region’s Cultural Arts & Education Center Featuring a 515 seat auditorium & outfitted with state of the art sound, lighting & streaming capability the theatre will host live, as well as filmed events ADA accessible with new equipment to lift from the main floor to the stage, from a new loading dock to the stage & a newly installed elevator to access the 7,500 square foot lower level for programing & serving the performers The theatre will include two classrooms, a patron’s lounge, auxiliary concessions area & offices

CRYSTAL SPRINGS RECREATION AREA
Mountain Biking Trails
Terrain Park
Ca m p in g
Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Wytheville is home to countless outdoor recreation opportunities! With 1,800 acres of townowned property, Crystal Springs Recreation Area is just three miles from Downtown Wytheville. The recreation area is surrounded by the 7500-acre Big Survey Wildlife Management Area (managed by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.) The thirteen miles of hiking and mountain biking trails range in difficulty from beginner to advanced. The newly built Terrain Park gives the intermediate to experienced mountain biker a fun place to practice on balance beams, teeter totters, rock gardens, log crossings, and other obstacles. There is a lot of history tucked away in the mountains that make up Crystal Springs. Prior to the Town of Wytheville purchasing the property, families farmed and logged the land. Piles of rocks that were cleared from the fields by farmers still stand along Woodpecker Run Trail as testament to how difficult farming in the mountains could be. The Short Cut Trail and the southern portion of the Boundary Trail follow an old wagon road that crossed Lick Mountain. Stories passed through the generations tell of moonshiners using this road to move their product out of the sight of law enforcement. In the 1930’s, the Town of Wytheville purchased the land to preserve the watershed, which flowed to the town, and to build a water reservoir. The reservoir remains and is approximately 60 square feet and 8 feet deep, although years of erosion have filled it with sediment. Hike the Crystal Springs Loop Trail to see the remnants of the reservoir. Along the Waterline Trail you can see the sections of the water pipe that carried water from the reservoir down the valley. Evidence of the past is scattered all throughout Crystal Springs, but you will have to look closely as it is now camouflaged by mother nature.

CLAW OF THE DRAGON Anyone can ride the Claw of the Dragon, but do you have what it takes to conquer it? It would be a challenge for motorcycle riders or classic car enthusiasts to find a more beautiful driving trail than the scenic back roads of Southwest Virginia. The Claw of the Dragon is made up of multiple looped trails totaling over 350 miles which snake up, out, and over several Blue Ridge Mountain ranges, including the highest elevation in Virginia. The Claw also features the heart-stopping action of the famous Back of the Dragon stretch on Virginia Route 16 that rolls through 260 curves in only a 32-mile ribbon of pavement. Easily accessible from Interstates 77, 81, or the Blue Ridge Parkway, the trail takes you through parts of seven Virginia counties with a variety of terrain including rollercoaster-like peaks, hairpin curves, corkscrew turns, switchback bends and rolling scenic two lanes, enabling you to have an all-inclusive riding experience. If the thrilling adventure of the Claw isn’t enough, the trek winds through the breathtaking beauty of the Jefferson National Forest and several State Parks, boasts thick wooded forests, tumbling mountain streams and stunning scenic views. In multiple spots along the ride there is evidence of where the Blue Ridge Mountains got their name, as off in the distance the perfectly framed ridges almost blend in with the sky due to their soft blue-like hue. A variety of unique attractions, delicious dining establishments and exciting entertainment venues can be found within and along the trail. At the heart of the Claw adventure sits the small-town charm of Wytheville which serves as a central location to begin each day’s ride, rest your head at night and experience a one-of a-kind getaway. Whether you prefer a hotel experience, a cozy bed and breakfast, a secluded cabin in the woods or a campground location, Wytheville has what you’re looking for. After a long day of riding enjoy Wytheville’s unique downtown dining or one of the other dozens of local restaurants and craft breweries, even dinner and a show at the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre. Wytheville’s historic downtown district provides multiple museums, specialty shops, boutiques, cafes, and parks.

Rural Retreat Lake is a 90-acre Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries-owned impoundment, surrounded by the Rural Retreat Lake Park, a recreational facility owned by Wythe County. Many anglers enjoy fishing the lake for Musky, which are freshly stocked every year , along with Northern Pike, Channel Catfish, Sunfish, Bluegill, Crappie and Bass, as well as the fully stocked trout pond adjoining the lake. Located on the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries’ Virginia Birding & Wildlife Trail, the Rural Retreat Lake’s hardwood forest and reedy marshland allow excellent opportunities for birding. In summer, the area is prolific with nesting wetland species including red-winged blackbird, and green heron in the swampier sections. The lake itself offers prime habitat for shorebirds and waterfowl in winter and migration. Osprey and bald eagle are fairly common and can be seen virtually any time of the year. The forested areas, composed of a mixture of oak, maple, and pine, attract an interesting array of songbirds. Fields near the lake host some of the only bobolink nesting in Wythe County. Opening in May of each year, the Campground offers over sixty primitive and full hookup camping sites to visitors, as well as additional recreational activities to entertain campers of all ages including hiking, boating, volleyball and biking. The Junior Olympic size pool with adjoining kiddy pool are sure to provide lasting fun and the park is also home to the only 9-hole disc golf course in the region which has quickly grown into a popular past time for all those who have found this new sport to be both challenging and relaxing.

but don’t just take our word for it... “Beyond the interstates, the attractions here are unique and beckon to travelers looking for authentic experiences to stop and stay a while. They call them homegrown attractions because they were grown from a local entrepreneur’s passion and they can only be found here. They are born of the landscape and soil of the region and of the ingenuity of its people. The homegrown attractions in Wytheville offer must-see adventures”. -Katie Reeder • TheChattanoogan.com “I expected to find the scenic beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains when I visited Wytheville, Virginia, and I knew I’d be learning about local history, but I didn’t count on finding a dinner theatre in such a small town or enjoying a great visit to an herb farm in a completely remote location. When you’re in the area, I highly recommend them both”. -Connie Pearson • Theregoesconnie.com

“Wytheville has long surpassed its popularity as a stopover point at the crossroads of two major Interstates (I-77 and I-81) in Southwest Virginia. Now it’s a destination unto itself. It’s an authentic place with remarkable stories to tell, in a downtown that combines hometown comforts with unique surprises. As temperatures fall and seasons change, this is an excellent time and the perfect place to get out and explore”. -North Georgia Living Magazine “Located in the southwest corner of Virginia, the small town of Wytheville (pronounced WITH-ville), is an inviting getaway with plenty of things to do and places to explore. From the largest pencil in Virginia—located downtown at Wytheville Office Supply—to the Edith Bolling Birthplace Museum, which commemorates the life of the former First Lady, there’s always something interesting to discover in and around Wytheville”. – SouthernLiving.com “Wytheville’s eclectic assortment of attractions will appeal to a variety of tastes. The area has a deep history and houses several attractions on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can watch dirt track car racing, peruse the local farmers market, or eat a meal while viewing a Broadway-style show at Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre. Motorcycle enthusiasts should make time to experience Southwest Virginia’s The Claw of the Dragon driving trail”. – TravelandLeisure.com
