West Lothian was formed from parts of the old counties of Linlithgowshire and Edinburghshire.
The hit TV series Outlander was filmed at 3 different historic properties in West Lothian – Hopetoun House, Midhope Castle and Linlithgow Palace. James Young’s Bathgate Chemical Works, started in 1851, was one of the worlds first oil refineries.
Mary, Queen of Scots, Scotland’s most infamous and fascinating queen was born in the magnificent Linlithgow Palace. The expansive summit of Cairnpapple Hill – a rare ceremonial ground in the Bathgate Hills was a significant site for ceremonies and burials for at least 4,000 years.

Originally known as ‘Carriber Reservoir’, Bowden Springs supplied domestic water to Bo’ness and the surrounding district. Two spring fed reservoirs drain from the beautiful hills around Torphichen to the South. One of the few local fisheries that allow fishing for Trout with bait as well as fly. One of the most pleasant ways of exploring West Lothian is by bicycle.
West Lothian has everything from plenty of flat and not too hilly routes for starters to steeper climbs and an extensive network of roads for the more seasoned cyclist. There are an infinite number of route options incorporating a variety of terrain from long drags to shorter, steeper climbs to flat terrain, and of course to some leg testers in the “Bathgate Alps”. You can bring your own bike on the train or rent a bike at Hooked on Cycling in Bathgate and off you go. We also have a number of excellent bike shops including Linlithgow based Elevation Cycles and Pedal Power in West Calder. There are bikes available to hire at Linlithgow Train Station via the Bike2Go Scheme. Hire your bike from the station ticket office.
