Five Sisters Zoo

House of the Binns

Inside one of the most spectacular ruins in Scotland you cannot help but walk in the footsteps of royalty. This royal pleasure palace was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Visit the great hall where monarchs hosted banquets, tour James IV’s suite of chambers or say a prayer in the private oratory of James V.

The House of the Binns stands as a living tribute to one of Scotland’s oldest families, the Dalyells, who have lived here for over 400 years. Scotland’s finest stately home set in acres of beautiful parkland overlooking the River Forth. With spectacular views and elegant design, this fabulous five star visitor attraction is a unique gem of Europe’s architectural heritage.

At the West Lothian Local History Library you can find out about the rich heritage of West Lothian from thousands of books, maps, photographs and old newspapers. Whether it’s the archaeology of West Lothian that you’re after, the history of its mining and shale industry or your own family history - we’re sure to be able to help. It’s the essential place to go to discover all things historic in West Lothian. Experts from the West Lothian Family History Society are in the library on Wednesdays and Fridays to give give genealogical help with your research. Annet House Museum & Gardens This fascinating museum with magnificent terraced gardens tells of the Kings and commoners who made Linlithgow’s history. Cairnpapple Hill Stand on a once-sacred hilltop where people first held rituals and raised monuments some 5,500 years ago. Blackness Castle Step inside a largely intact medieval castle whose doughty defences once guarded the Firth of Forth. Known as ‘The Ship that Never Sailed’ for its boat-like shape, Blackness Castle was built in the 1400s for Sir George Crichton, Admiral of Scotland.

Stroll through any of our tranquil country parks or along the banks of the Union Canal. West Lothian has numerous pathways which crisscross the length of the county and offer a peaceful escape. The John Muir Way passes through some particularly picturesque parts of West Lothian including the Hopetoun estate and Linlithgow.

Harperrig Fisheries

Beecraigs Country Park offers fly fishing in a sheltered, 20 acre, chalkspring Loch nestling in the hills, 2 miles South of Historic Linlithgow. Regularly stocked with quality rainbow trout with fly fishing from the boat and optional “Catch & Keep”/ “Catch & Release”.

Harperrig is a well known large compensation reservoir, visible from the A70 Lanark Road on the North West slopes of the Pentland Hills. Harperrig is the only Brown Trout fishery in the Lothians.

Bowden Springs Trout Fishery Originally known as ‘Carriber Reservoir’, Bowden Springs supplied domestic water to Bo’ness and the surrounding district. Two spring fed reservoirs drain from the beautiful hills around Torphichen to the South. One of the few local fisheries that allow fishing for Trout with bait as well as fly. Cycling One of the most pleasant ways of exploring West Lothian is by bicycle. Bring your own bike on the train or rent a bike at Hooked on Cycling in Bathgate, or Easygo Electric Bikes, Linlithgow and off you go.
