WELCOME TO CORNWALL It’s far and away the UK’s most contrasting and colourful county. Reaching into the vast Atlantic ocean at the most southwestern extremity of the UK, Cornwall has a climate and coastline all of its own, with much to offer beyond its sandy shores. This plethora of things are why visitors from near and far keep returning. They come for the surf, the swimming and the sport in its crystal-clear waters. They come for the white-sand beaches, deserted coves, clifftop walks and harbour villages that ring the county. And they come for extraordinary food The Lost Gardens of Heligan served up by stellar chefs, working with award-winning local produce. That would be enough for most destinations. But there’s much more about Cornwall you’ll want to discover. Venture inland, between the coasts, and discover a rich and untamed landscape, from the captivating wilderness of Bodmin Moor with its panorama of big skies, hills and walking trails, to rolling farmland and steep, lush river valleys. Explore a living timeline of history and culture in the remains of prehistoric settlements, 1,000year old towns and villages, artists’ colonies and the mines that provided the world with tin and copper, now afforded World Heritage Site status. Soak up the atmosphere surrounding the myth of King Arthur at Tintagel Castle, uncover the exploits of pirates and smugglers beneath the cliffs, and learn a little of the local Celtic 02

culture and Cornish language, ever-present in the names of villages. You can even go further off the beaten track and take a small plane or ferry to the Isles of Scilly, an uncrowded, unspoilt archipelago 28 miles off the tip of Cornwall. With so much real-life drama in Cornwall’s past and landscape, it’s no surprise to find the county’s a favourite location for make-believe, too. It’s long been a star of TV and the silver screen, providing settings for TV series such as Poldark, Doc Martin and Delicious, and movies like About Time, Summer in February and Mr Turner. So, what’s your Cornish story going to be? A gorgeous garden one day, a gallery or museum the next? There’s Tate St Ives with its dramatic new extension, the restored Victorian wonder of the Lost Gardens of Heligan, family-friendly museums with lots to offer, and a host of historic houses with their own parks and gardens. Walk the causeway at low-tide to St Michael’s Mount, or follow the spectacular South West Coast Path. Remember to take in a show at the open-air, clifftop Minack Theatre. Experience the blustery north coast and the more sheltered south coast in one day. And get a taste of more exotic climes in the Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes of the Eden Project. Or simply grab a board and take the plunge at Fistral, Sennen Cove or Watergate Bay… See you there!

4 MYTHS AND LEGENDS Tintagel is home to Merlin’s Cave and the ruins of a 13th century castle, said to be the birthplace of King Arthur. Boscastle has a postcard-pretty harbour, potteries and art galleries, and Port Isaac is the location for TV’s Doc Martin and the two Michelin-starred Restaurant Nathan Outlaw. The often reputed site for King Arthur’s Court of Camelot, Camelford, makes a great base.

BODMIN MOOR &

THE TAMAR VALLEY Experience the diversity of the Cornish landscape with the contrast between the ruggedness of Bodmin Moor and the lush Tamar Valley. In just a matter of miles the big panoramas of the high ground give way to an oasis of ancient woodland and meandering creeks.

Rough Tor, Bodmin Moor

1 WINDSWEPT WILDS Step back to the days of grim incarceration and punishment at Bodmin Jail, then gain liberation on Bodmin Moor, 150 square miles of beautiful, windswept moorland and stunning views. Bodmin is also a cycling hub, with routes and trails including the Cornish Way, to Land’s End and Bude, and the woodland trails at Lanhydrock. The nearby villages of St Breward and Blisland are well worth a visit.

18

2 MOORLAND HERITAGE Much of Liskeard’s former mining-based prosperity is still evident around the town, in handsome Edwardian and Victorian facades. Webb’s House, a former hotel from the mid-1800s, dominates the town centre. The village of Minions, part of Cornwall's World Heritage industrial landscape, is surrounded by mining relics. The Bronze Age stone circle known as The Hurlers lies close by.

SOUTH COAST Stretching from the windswept Rame Head to the tranquil Helford River, the south coast of Cornwall offers a blend of scenery dotted with whitewashed fishing villages, sandy coves and sub-tropical gardens. The sheltered river estuaries are ideal for messing about in boats.

Rame Head

1 ON THE BORDER Known as Cornwall’s forgotten corner, the Rame Peninsula’s tidal creeks, sandy beaches, small villages, lush farmland and country parks are waiting to be discovered. Walk out to the 14th century chapel at Rame Head, and visit the twin seafront villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, once favourite haunts of smugglers, with their colour-washed cottages and views of Plymouth Sound.

Looe

2 A TASTE OF CORNWALL The great loves of Looe are food and music: fresh fish caught on local boats; and the sounds of Looe Music Festival, in September. Wander the narrow streets of Polperro down to the small harbour, and, in Fowey, be tempted by independent shops and eateries before a drink by the river. Antique shops and a former royal castle await in Lostwithiel, once the capital of Cornwall.

WEST

CORNWALL The westernmost tip of Cornwall reveals a sense of individuality found in captivating scenery, ancient heritage and creative communities. Slip off the edge of the map into artists’ colonies, granite outcrops, historic mining settlements, harbour towns and long stretches of golden sand.

Sennen Cove

1 INDUSTRIAL PIONEERS Welcome to the heart of Cornwall’s prosperous mining past. With its inventors and entrepreneurs, the Camborne/ Redruth area was a driving force in the industrial revolution. Today, the remains of engine houses still stand proud in the landscape and serve as a reminder of Cornwall’s industrial past, as does Heartlands, the heritage attraction and Cornish Mining World Heritage Site gateway.

Cornish Miner, Redruth 42

2 ARTISTS' HAVEN A destination for artists and writers for decades, St Ives buzzes with independent shops, eateries, galleries and four very different beaches. Tate St Ives’ acclaimed new extension and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden are must-sees. Towards Godrevy lighthouse, Hayle and Gwithian offer a vast sweep of golden sands loved by surfers, sunbathers, seabirds and seals.

St. Helens Oratory

3 BREATHTAKING VISTAS The journey around the tip of Cornwall is spectacular. The coast road from St Ives, through Zennor, to Cape Cornwall and Land’s End enjoys views to the ocean across farms perched on mighty cliffs. Just before Land’s End, the golden sands of Sennen Cove are a surfers’ paradise. Porthcurno has fine soft white sand and, carved into the granite cliff, the world-famous, open-air Minack Theatre.

Porthleven

Coverack

5 OUTSTANDING BEAUTY Helston, one of Cornwall’s oldest towns, is best-known for its annual Flora Day, an ancient festival held in May to celebrate the end of winter. Porthleven’s formidable harbour is home to fishing boats and restaurants serving up the day’s catch. The Lizard Peninsula is a wonderland of plants and flowers, picture-perfect fishing villages with thatched cottages, and beautiful Coverack cove and harbour.

Penzance

4 MARITIME LEGACY No pirates anymore, but Penzance is rich with history in its Regency and Georgian architecture, museums and galleries. The art deco Jubilee Pool is one of Europe’s few remaining saltwater lidos. In Marazion, stroll across the causeway to St Michael’s Mount at low tide. Don’t miss Newlyn, still a thriving fishing port (with a new arthouse cinema), and the old-world charms of Mousehole.

Quality Inspected All accommodation listed in this guide is quality inspected to common quality standards. Most are inspected by Visit England or the AA. Both schemes rate accommodation from one to five star. Inspections are carried out on an annual basis. Here’s an idea of what to expect:

Other Approved Accommodation is inspected by local organisations including Visit Cornwall, using the same common standards, and working in harmony with Visit England and the AA.

1* Simple comfortable 2* Well-presented and well run 3* Good level of quality and comfort 4* Excellent standard throughout 5* Exceptional with a degree of luxury

VisitEngland

Awards and reviews In addition to the star ratings, excellence is further acknowledged with the use of Visit England's acclaimed Silver, Gold and Rose Awards, AA Rosettes, or other accreditations. These are shown in the listings where space permits. Many accommodation providers have further awards. Search online to find out more and to book.

Campsites & Caravan Parks Campsites and caravan parks are rated by the AA with pennants similarly to other accommodation dependant on the range and quality of facilities provided. The AA Pennant rating is only based on the touring pitches and facilities at campsites and caravan parks, and does not cover static caravans or chalets.

It is naturally hoped that persons using the accommodation and services in this guide will find that it meets their requirements and is of a high standard. The information detailed in this guide is supplied to the Visit Cornwall by the proprietors of the establishments listed.
