HELLO! I’m Sean Dixon, president of Visit Topeka, and let me be the first to welcome you to the capital city of Kansas. As a fairly new addition to Topeka, I can proudly say that every day my family and I learn something new about this extraordinary place. If you’re a history buff, like me, you might be amazed to see and learn more about Topeka’s role in many pivotal moments in our nation’s history — and there are numerous factoids in this guide that may be explored at our historical sites and museums. If this is your first time in Kansas’ capital, I recommend embracing local colors and flavors by exploring a variety of murals in the city painted by area artists, or by sitting down at a locally owned restaurant, brewery or coffee shop. If night life is your jam, we have excellent bars and cocktail options to explore. If you’re an arts fanatic, you can catch a show at one of our local concert halls, enjoy a play at Topeka Civic Theatre, find your crowd in Topeka’s arts and entertainment district, or visit one of our many local galleries. And if you aim to feed your outdoorsy side, our beautiful parks, trails and green spaces will have just what you’re looking for. Topeka is a city that really makes you think – and has more than you might think — so take your time and have a good look around. You never know what’s just around the corner. Thank you for picking up this guide. We hope you will enjoy the contents within and learn something new along the way. Please visit VisitTopeka.com and follow us on social media for updates on events and attractions. And welcome to Topeka!

GUIDE
WELCOME to Topeka, the
beautiful capital of our great state of Kansas! As a longtime Topekan, I’m always excited to see new faces grace our city. Whether you’re here for a visit or here to stay, I’m confident you’ll find what you’re looking for. We’re a city rich in history, having served as the launchpad for such civil rights cases as Brown v. Board of Education, which led to the end of racial segregation in public schools. I encourage you to explore the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site to learn more about Topeka’s role in the landmark legislation — or visit our impressive state capitol building to hear about abolitionist John Brown and Kansas’ role in the American Civil War. If you’re a lover of the arts, visit our growing NOTO Arts & Entertainment District or one of the many art galleries in downtown Topeka and beyond. For live
entertainment, catch a show at Evergy Plaza, the historic Jayhawk Theatre, Stormont Vail Events Center, Topeka Civic Theatre or the Topeka Performing Arts Center. If nature is your preference, trails at the Governor’s Mansion, and throughout the city, are sure to excite. Or find your peace at Gage Park, Lake Shawnee or one of our many pocket parks. Whatever you’re here to experience, the citizens of Topeka will make you feel at home. I hope you get to experience the beauty, diversity and warmth our community has to offer. And if you have questions about tourism or where to start, feel free to reach out to our Visit Topeka team. They are always ready to help. Welcome to our city! Topeka is glad to have you. H
eartland Motorsports Park has been a staple in Topeka for more than 30 years and brings hundreds of thousands of people to our community annually.
The event they’re most known for is the Menards NHRA Nationals presented by PetArmor, which has garnered Heartland Motorsports Park the nickname “House of Speed.” In 2021, Heartland Motorsports Park played host to the AHRMA Classic MotoFest in the Heartland, which features a wide array of vintage motorcycles participating in bike shows, road racing, sidecar racing and more. Heartland Motorsports Park is also next door to the national headquarters of Sports Car Club of America, which often hosts races at the park’s facilities. In recent years, Heartland Motorsports Park has 8

HISTORY OF HEARTLAND “Construction on Heartland Motorsports Park took more than a year, and on Aug. 11, 1989, four years after a motorsports facility was proposed in Topeka, the track hosted its first race, the Camel Grand Prix. Built at a cost of nearly $22 million, Heartland Motorsports Park has been hosting record-setting performances since the doors first opened over 30 years ago. Since 2016, the updates and renovations that have been done to the facility have been tremendous.” Courtesy of: HeartlandMotorsports.us

Historic
Harley-Davidson®
of Topeka
T
he Historic Harley-Davidson® of Topeka has grown and thrived in Kansas’ capital city for more than 70 years. After surviving a fire in 1950 that decimated the neighboring Throop Hotel in downtown Topeka, Harley-Davidson® owner Henry Patterson and his small team found themselves in 3-feet of water following the Great Flood of 1951, which swept through the area. Times were tough, but perseverance won. After decades in the business, Patterson saw his business grow, and his son and grandson joined the team. With three generations of Pattersons at the helm and HarleyDavidsons growing in popularity, the Topeka shop more than tripled in size in less than a decade. By 1999, the Topeka Harley-Davidson® hit its 50-year mark, cementing Henry Patterson’s legacy in Topeka shortly before his passing. Since 2000, the capital city’s Historic Harley-Davidson® has been located at the intersection of 21st Street and Topeka Boulevard. The building was constructed in 1935 and previously housed the Shawnee County Maintenance Department, followed by Willie C’s Restaurant. A renovation of the building allowed the Topeka Harley-Davidson® shop to incorporate a restaurant (Henry’s Grill) and a museum (Yesterday’s) into the dealership’s new location. This unique combination of amenities has created an entertaining destination and engaging pitstop for visitors and motorcyclists alike. Topeka’s Historic Harley-Davidson® is for both Harley-Davidson® dealers and riders. It serves the Topeka, Kansas area, offering the best in new and pre-owned bikes. The Topeka team’s friendly and knowledgeable sales, financing, service and parts departments are prepared to ensure your experience — from choosing a new set of wheels to customization and ongoing maintenance — is outstanding. 2022

Brown v. Board
Uncover a history of courage and determination
T
he story of Brown v. Board of Education — the landmark supreme court case that ended legal segregation in public schools — is one of hope and resounding resolve, and it started right here in Topeka, Kansas. When Oliver Brown and fellow Topeka parents agreed to be plaintiffs in the case, they didn’t know they would change history. You can learn about the historic Brown v. Board case and the events leading up to it at Topeka’s Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, 1515 S.E. Monroe St. There you’ll also gain an understanding of and appreciation for the role this 1954 decision played in the broader U.S. Civil Rights Movement.

Describe Topeka in three words:
Flourishing; Growth; Friendly Brown v. Board Mural
Whether you spend 30 minutes or several hours at the site, be sure to take advantage of all it has to offer. Tour the historic Monroe School building, where the museum is housed. Or visit the colorful, detailed Brown v. Board mural located just across the street. This historic site is operated by the National Park Service and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. The Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site is the first official stop on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail. The U.S. Civil Rights Trail highlights more than 100 locations across 15 states. The trail traces the decades-long journey — beginning in the mid-20th century — that resulted in tragedy and triumph and culminated in landmark federal civil rights legislation. • After visiting the Brown v. Board site, be sure to
check out the Historic Ritchie House, 1116 S.E. Madison St. The Ritchie House — built by abolitionists John and Mary Jane Ritchie — was a stop along the Underground Railroad and is considered to be Topeka’s oldest home.• Explore the Mamie Williams House, 1503 S.E. Quincy St., which was home to the acclaimed Topeka educator. Williams served Topeka Public Schools for 30 years, including as principal of Monroe School.• Also visit Constitution Hall, 429 S. Kansas Ave., Constitution Hall is where delegates from across the Kansas territory met in 1855 to ban slavery in what would become the state’s first constitution and served as the southern terminus of an underground railroad responsible for freeing 400 enslaved persons from bondage.

Our Capitol is Capital
N
amed one of Kansas’ “Most Iconic Buildings” by Architectural Design, the Kansas State Capitol serves as both a home to the state’s legislature and a monument to the defining history of Kansas. The land on which The Capitol lies was donated by Cyrus K. Holliday, a Topeka founding father and co-founder of the Topeka, Atchison, Santa Fe Railroad. After 37 years of construction, The Capitol was officially completed in 1903. The master architect was Edward Townsend Mix, with the building’s wings designed by John G. Haskell. Embodying an overall Classical design style, the foundation and outer structure of The Capitol are made entirely of Kansas Limestone. A 14-year renovation period was completed in 2014, with one of the biggest changes being restoration of The Capitol’s exterior masonry and copper dome. Once inside, you’ll marvel at the view of the dome and upper rotunda, which is adorned with striking murals. Fun fact: Italianborn artist Jerome Fedeli was originally commissioned to paint those murals, but strife over the murals’ content led the legislature in 1902 to hire Vermont-native Abner Crossman to paint over the original design. At The Capitol, be sure to tour the second floor to view a series of murals by John Steuart Curry that portray the story of Kansas’ history. The Kansas State Library at The Capitol is also a must-see, along with the third-floor Brown v. Board mural painted in 2018 by Kansas City artist Michael Young. Before you go, we insist you take a dome tour. It’s 296 steps to the top, but the view is like no other! Also stop by the visitors’ center on the capitol’s first floor for all your Kansas souvenir needs. THE HOT TAKE
The Capitol building is beautiful, with stunning architecture, intricate details and years of history. Here are seven things every visitor should know: • The Capitol design features 17 different types of marble. Much of the marble came from other countries. • It would take 2.3 million pure copper pennies to make up the Capitol dome! (Pure copper pennies haven’t been minted since 1857, before construction on The Capitol even began.) • There is one remaining “office” sink in The Capitol. Historians are unsure why the one sink remains. In the late 1800s it was common for government offices to have sinks and sometimes even baths, due to long and dusty travel conditions. •The Kansas Capitol is the second tallest, out of 38, traditional domed

capitols in the United States. • The Ad Astra statue atop the statehouse was added to the dome after schoolchildren voted for it. Representing a Kaw warrior pointing his arrow toward the North Star, the sculpture was crafted by Richard Bergen. It is named for the state’s official motto, “Ad astra per aspera,” which is Latin for “To the stars through difficulty.” • When the Capitol was finished in 1903, after 37 years of construction, there was no debt on the building. • The oldest book in the Capitol’s State Library is from 1741 and was written by Sir Francis Bacon.

THE KANSAS HISTORY MUSEUM
Located on 80 acres in southwest Topeka, the Kansas Museum of History features of 30,000 square feet of exhibit space and charts the history of the Sunflower State. At the center of the museum’s diverse and impressive exhibits stands the oldest surviving locomotive used by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. The locomotive, completed in 1880, operated for nearly 60 years before being retired. Visitors can also enjoy over 2.5 miles of walking trails that wind through creek banks, native grassland and woodlands. While walking be sure to check out the historic Stach Schoolhouse, a one room schoolhouse built in 1877, the Potawatomi Mission built in 1850, or browse the state historical archives and read letters from well known historical figures, John Brown or Carrie Nation.
THE GREAT OVERLAND STATION
Great Overland Station
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the “Union Pacific Railroad Passenger Depot,” the Great Overland Station is a testament to Topeka’s strong historical and cultural ties to the railroad. The station, completed in 1927, was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood and features a grand exterior. The building is now home to a museum and educational center that brings Topeka’s railroad heritage to life through photographs and special exhibits. In spring 2022, Great Overland Station will be home to a premier exhibit of Topeka Dino Days, as a fully articulated cast of SUE, the largest T-rex ever discovered, will be on display at the station.

CONSTITUTION HALL: FREE STATE CAPITOL
Located in downtown Topeka at 429 S Kansas Avenue, explore Topeka’s Constitution Hall. The façade was restored to it’s original condition in 2021. Here in 1855, representatives of the Free State Kansas government, elected by the people of the Kansas Territory, wrote the Topeka Constitution banning slavery in the future state of Kansas. By 1857 the site was the headquarters of the Underground Railroad operations on the Lane Trail to freedom in the north. Between 1864 – 1869 the building served as the first Capitol Building of Kansas.

Burnett’s Mound
BURNETT’S MOUND
Burnett’s Mound is home to some of the best views in Topeka. Located in Skyline Park, the mound is the highest point of elevation in the city. The area is home to hiking and biking trails, but for many people there is a more personal cultural connection. Burnett’s Mound is named after Potawatomi Chief Abram Burnett. After they were forced to leave their homes, Burnett led fellow Potawatomi tribe members from their settlement in Indiana to what is now Topeka. Burnett played a role in building Shawnee County into what it is today, capitalizing on economic opportunities from travelers on the Oregon Trail and farming a large plot of land near Burnett’s Mound. It has been passed down through urban legend that Abram Burnett warned anyone who disturbed the mound that they would feel great repercussions. In 1960, a water tank was placed on Burnett’s Mound, and interstate construction cut through the base of it. It was believed the mound would protect the area from tornadoes, but on June 8, 1966, an F-5 Tornado tore through Topeka, passing over Burnett’s Mound. The tornado killed 17 people and caused more than $200 million in damages. The tornado damaged or destroyed every building on Washburn University’s campus and also caused damage to the Kansas State Capitol building.
DID YOU KNOW:
The 1974 back cover of the band Kansas’s self titled album was photographed on top of Burnett’s Mound. The photo would go on to be featured on the 2015 documentary of the band’s success, “Miracles out of Nowhere.”
WARD-MEADE, OLD PRAIRIE TOWN
Take a trip back in time by visiting Old Prairie Town! The complex includes a general store, oldfashioned drugstore, church, schoolhouse and the famous Ward-Meade Mansion. The mansion was originally home to Anthony A. Ward, with construction of the home starting in 1870. The Ward-Meade Mansion was purchased by the city of Topeka in 1960 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Guided tours of Old Prairie Town’s buildings are available at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. While there, don’t forget to stroll through the 2.5 acres of botanical gardens that are open to the public daily from 8 a.m. to dusk.

H
ome to more than 300 different fury, scaly and feathered friends, the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center is a must for animal lovers of all ages. Enjoy long-time favorite attractions like the Tropical Rainforest and Black Bear Woods. Then, be sure to check out newer additions like Camp Cowabunga, which features animals native to sub-Saharan Africa, or the stunning and serene Kay’s Garden, an authentic Japanese water garden.
Completed in fall of 2020, the Kay McFarland Japanese Garden (known fondly as Kay’s Garden) was a dream of the late Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Kay McFarland. She wanted to leave behind in the community she served a legacy gift of a world-class Japanese garden and meditative space. Kay’s Garden offers breathtaking views and is sure to provide comfort and serenity to all who enter. 2022 is expected to bring new amenities to the zoo, as well as a new home for several animals. Construction began in 2021 on an $8 million project that will create a new giraffe facility and accompanying barn for antelope and gazelles, all within a three-acre habitat. This habitat will interact with the safari-themed Camp Cowabunga, which opened in 2018. The new animal exhibits will include a giant indoor giraffe playroom, maternity room, training area, and both an indoor and outdoor feeding platform, allowing guests to get up close and personal with the tallest mammals in Topeka. The capital city’s zoo also offers a variety of fun events throughout the year, including a celebration of the Japanese garden, a number of educational programs, zoo-wide trick-or-treating around Halloween, a summer beertasting event and more. A new event that launched in 2021 is the Steins and Vines series. A ticket to Steins and Vines allows guests to enjoy their choice of beer or wine, delectable eats from local food trucks, and live entertainment, all while being granted after-hours access to the zoo. Delight in the zoo’s exhibits while you sip and stroll. Guests also receive a limited-edition glass featuring illustrations of your favorite zoo animals. Be sure to attend each event to complete your collection of glasses, as each is a bit different! 20

LECOMPTON
Lecompton was founded in 1854 on a 640-acre Wyandotte Indian land claim on the south bank of the Kansas River. The town served as the territorial capital in 1855 and became the seat of the proslavery movement in Kansas during the era known as “Bleeding Kansas. In 1857 a constitutional convention met to draft what is now known as the “Lecompton Constitution”. This document would have established Kansas as a slave state. The constitution was rejected by congress, prompting national debate. The Lecompton Constitution would become one of the central topics of the famed LincolnDouglas debates. The first governor of Kansas, Charles Robinson and other free-state leaders were imprisoned in the town between 1856-1857. Lecompton features a territorial capitol museum, as well as a historic walking tour with 34 stops; information about the tour can be found on Lecompton’s website, LecomptonKansas.com. 2022

TERRITORIAL CAPITAL MUSEUM (Lane University) This museum sits on the grounds of the former 13-acre Lecompton capital square district. In 1855, construction of an elegant capital building began with a $50,000 appropriation from Congress. By 1857, however, all the money was spent, and antislavery legislators had gained control of the territorial legislature.

CONSTITUTION HALL Built in 1856 by Sheriff Samuel J. Jones — who used native cottonwood and black walnut lumber cut from his steam sawmill on the Kaw River — Constitution Hall is the oldest woodframe, civilian structure left standing in its original location in Kansas.
Perry Lake, a 11,000-plus-acre reservoir located about 20 miles outside of Topeka, is home to a new restaurant, High Tide 21. This location features a swim-up pool bar and serves up marina restaurant fare to patrons on the lake. Kids can hit the splash pad for a little fun in the sun, while waiting for food. Local tip — go around sunset to catch views of the sun setting over the lake.
Every year thousands flock to area sunflower farms in August to enjoy the bright yellow flowers standing tall in the Kansas sun. These fields serve as the perfect photo backdrop and provide joy and inspiration to visitors from around the region. Be sure to visit Berry Hill UPick Farm in Berryton, KS or Grinter Farms in nearby Lawrence, Kansas. PERRY AREA

Downtown Topeka
D
owntown Topeka is in a nearly constant state of development, with retailers, restaurants and entertainment landing new locations by the month in the heart of our capital city.
Evergy Plaza
The sights and sounds of downtown shouldn’t be missed. Evergy Plaza, which opened in 2020, is home to the capital city’s outdoor performing arts scene and is the top spot for catching an outdoor concert or show, or the occasional movie. In fact, performing arts overflow in the downtown district, with performances of all types occurring year-round. For indoor concerts, stand-up comedians, dance performances and more, visit the Topeka Performing Arts Center or the historic Jayhawk Theatre. When planning your trip to Topeka, be sure to check out their websites for the latest lineup of events. If you prefer being part of the entertainment, you’ll want to visit Topeka’s newest gaming lounge, Spawn Inn. Grab your friends and start a game, or watch others at play while enjoying a beer or cocktail. Just around the corner from Evergy Plaza sits Axe & Ale. There, you can test your axe throwing skills, while enjoying a drink or variety of snacks. (Local tip: Axe & Ale even allows you to bring in outside food or have it delivered!) If you 30

enjoy competition, gather your friends and join their weekly throwing league. If axes aren’t your thing but golf is, head south down Kansas Avenue to The Tee Box! This new downtown business is indoor golf at its finest. The Tee Box offers a full menu featuring gourmet twists on classics like hot dogs and flatbreads. Come for the food or reserve a TrackMan-powered bay and get your swings in while sipping on a drink from their specially curated cocktail and beer menus. Looking for something a bit more relaxed? Then, stroll over to Brew Bank. This location was the first in Kansas to offer self-serve digital taps, allowing you to enjoy some of the finest local and regional craft beers by the ounce or glass. Upon arrival, set up your pour card; then try as much or as little of anything you’d like. If you aren’t a beer fan, they also offer a selection of signature cocktails. Order dinner or dessert to go with your drink of choice — or, if you’re lucky, you can catch one of their coveted mixology classes!
For a swanky stay, check out the Cyrus Hotel. Views from the Cyrus overlook downtown, and the boutique hotel offers a unique modern, yet retro aesthetic. The Cyrus is pet friendly, offers valet service, and serves up an Italian menu at its on-site bar and restaurant, Fedeli’s. The hotel also has several conference rooms, a ballroom, a rooftop area and two outdoor patios to support events of all sizes. You may even want to make a short trip down Kansas Avenue for a night cap at Topeka’s newest cocktail bar, Knox Cocktail Bar & Lounge, opening in 2022. After a restful evening at the Cyrus, walk down to Classic Bean or head over to local favorite Juli’s Café and Bistro. They offer the perfect caffeinated concoctions to get your day started, along with full breakfast and lunch menus that feature both hearty and healthy options. Equality House
I
n March 2013, the Equality House arose in Topeka’s sleepy Westboro neighborhood as a symbol of compassion, peace and positive change.
@chrisszamoszegi
Top City Takes: Chris (Los Angeles)
“I’ve honestly always felt welcome in Topeka being gay. We visit yearly to see family and Equality House is worth making a part of any visit.”
The Equality House, or “Rainbow House” as it is often called, became headquarters for the LGBTQ advocacy arm of Planting Peace, a nonprofit humanitarian organization founded for the purpose of “spreading peace in a hurting world.” Painted the colors of the Pride flag, the Equality House “serves as the resource center for all Planting Peace human rights initiatives and stands as a visual reminder of [the organization’s] commitment, as global citizens, to equality for all.” The Equality House champions such empowering events as the “Gay Games,” a worldwide sport and cultural event that supports sexual diversity and highlights significant LGBTQ issues, including marriage equality, violence against LGBTQ individuals and employment discrimination. In addition, the rainbow house raises 2022

awareness of community issues and supports bullying-prevention programs. In 2020, following the murder of George Floyd, a “Black Lives Matter” mural was erected on one side of the Equality House, demonstrating the interconnectedness of Planting Peace’s fight for civil rights. Planting Peace focuses its efforts on a range of humanitarian and environmental causes, including a network of orphanages in developing countries, a multi-national deworming operation, LGBTQ-rights advocacy and an Amazon Rainforest conservation campaign. Following the initial success of its Equality House, Planting Peace in 2016 painted the house next door to mimic the transgender flag. It was named the Mott House in 2019 to honor Kansas’ greatest transgender activist, the late Stephanie Mott.
Visitors are free to explore both the Equality and Mott houses. Explore the properties, take pictures and show your pride. There are usually markers on hand if you wish to write a kind or encouraging message on the Equality House’s north-facing exterior wall. Depending on the season, you may even be able to harvest vegetables from the property’s community garden; just be sure to pull a weed or two! Donations are also welcome. Visit PlantingPeace.org/campaign/equalityhouse to pledge either a monthly or one-time monetary gift. Such donations are vital to the Equality House’s mission of spreading peace, compassion and understanding. For more on Kansas’ Pride movement, check out the “Pride” section in this guide.

Prairie Town.
Groups, classes, families and individuals are welcome to stroll the grounds or take guided tours to explore the 1800-era replicas of a schoolhouse, church, general store, train station and more. The Prairie Town village also features a replica of the 1854 log cabin in which pioneer Anthony A. Ward lived with his family while building the neighboring WardMeade mansion. That mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as “the story of the house and its occupants reflects the history, changes, and expansion of the city” of Topeka. While visiting Prairie Town, you can walk into the old-fashioned drug store and sip on a treat from the soda shop inside. (Local tip: Ask for the Green River Soda at the Potwin Drug Store!) opeka boasts a variety of parks, trails and green spaces. Whether you’re looking for exercise or fresh air, celebrate the beauty of nature in the capital of Kansas!
MOUNTAIN BIKING Topeka’s trails afford more than just leisurely strolls; a few offer heart-pounding cycling for bike enthusiasts or the whole family. No matter your skill level, Topeka’s mountainbiking areas provide a thrilling challenge. Locals’ favorite biking trails include the following hot sites: • Kaw River State Park (Red Trail) • MacLennan Park (Yellow & Red Trails) • Azura Trail at Skyline Park Once you’re done exploring Topeka by bike, stop in at one of the city’s local coffee shops or craft breweries for a bit of unwind time.

KAY’S GARDEN
Located at the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center, this Japanese water garden is one of only a few of its kind in the U.S. The final design was created by garden master Koji Morimoto, who handcrafted pieces of the serene scene himself. Japanese water gardens are known to get better with age, maturing over the course of several hundred years. Zoo staff expect Topeka’s Japanese water garden to become fully mature in about 70 years. Whether for daily strolls or to attend a wedding, you’ll want to visit Kay’s Garden again and again to see nature come to life.
PARKS
Keep your picnic basket handy for an open-air lunch, or enjoy a familyfriendly adventure at Topeka Parks. Notable local parks include Gage Park, where you’ll find the Topeka Zoo, a 2-mile paved loop, a rose garden, a miniature train offering rides through the park, and luscious green spaces. Visit Lake Shawnee, which has been cited as a top travel destination in Kansas and boasts the popular Lake Shawnee Adventure Cove, as well as a nearly 7-mile paved path. Looking for something a bit more lowkey? Check out Crestview Park, which is home to two disc golf courses and a portion of the expansive Shunga Trail. Or take a hike through the Azura Trails at Skyline Park. There’s no shortage of green spaces to explore! A complete list of local parks may be found online at parks.snco.us. V i s i tTo p e k a.c o m

TRAILS
Whether you’re a walker, runner, hiker or biker, don’t forget your exercise shoes! For trail lovers, Topeka offers a variety of wooded and paved trails to traverse — and most are both pedestrian and biker friendly. For a more rugged experience, we suggest the hilly, winding trails of Kaw River State Park, which is located next to MacLennan Park and the Kansas Governor’s mansion. For a hike or bike with a view, visit the Azura Trails at Skyline Park, which is home to Burnett’s Mound, the highest point in the capital city. In North Topeka, just off Highway 24 sits Iliff Commons, consisting of several miles of trails that have been carved through native prairie and woodland and are used for walking, running, cross-country skiing and mountain biking. For a paved path, we recommend Shunga Trail, which stretches for more than 7 miles with more in progress. Looking for a biking option for the whole family? The nearly 7-mile concrete path circling Lake Shawnee might be the perfect fit. And don’t forget
about the 2.5-mile trail winding around the Kansas Museum of History! This peaceful, enchanting loop of smaller trails features various signs explaining the cultural and natural history of the area. Frequent encounters along the trail include red-tailed hawks, Western meadowlarks, wild turkey and whitetailed deer.

POOLS, SPLASH PADS AND AQUATIC CENTERS
Looking to cool off? Starting each Memorial Day weekend, local pools and aquatic centers are open for business. They include Blaisdell Family Aquatic Center, Midwest Health Aquatic Center and Shawnee North Family Aquatic Center, as well as several community pools. Also, don’t sleep on the area’s splash parks, including Dornwood Spray Park, Jackson Spray Park and the downtown splash pad at Evergy Plaza. Once you’ve had your fill of fun, enjoy a sweet treat from a local favorite like G’s Frozen Custard or Tad’s Tropical Sno.

Top City Takes: Scott Stebner describe Topeka in three words
Community, kindness, open space. Describe a perfect day in Topeka look like for you?
My family’s perfect day definitely starts with a visit to one of our incredible, independent coffee companies. Whether it’s Judee’s, PT’s, Milk and Honey, Dialogue, or any of the others, we’re excited to grab a latte together and a pastry for the boys. From there, it has to include some solid family bonding time mountain biking on one of Topeka’s trail systems. See more of Scott’s takes on page 83.
KANSAS RIVER
Stretching through the northern part of the capital city, the Kansas River, also known as the Kaw River, has delighted and inspired travelers for over a century. The Kansas River flows west to east for more than 170 miles before feeding into the Missouri River, the longest river in North America, at Kaw Point in Kansas City. Topeka-area visitors enjoy multiple access points, including the Kaw River State Park, which occupies 76 acres of land on the south bank of the Kansas River. A convenient boat ramp near river mile 90 provides river access to canoes, kayaks and other small craft. In 2021, phase one of construction on the Kansas River Weir, near river mile 87, was completed, creating a safe passage at that point for kayakers, canoers and recreational users of the waterway. The construction project resulted in a bypass channel near the Kansas River’s north bank, new landscaping and access features near that river-mile entry point, additional parking in the area, and other safety improvements. Water enthusiasts, or newcomers interested in seeing Topeka from a different perspective, can plan a unique 40

They offer float trips that can take up to four hours, allowing you time to explore sandbars and enjoy the natural scenery. Also, try your hand at catfishing or stay the night in their river cabin. Kayak and canoe rentals are also available through KawValleyCanoeRental.com. Just across the river in NOTO, the North Topeka arts district, lives a business focusing on outdoor adventures for women. At Dirty Girl Adventures, women of all backgrounds live by the “Dirty Girl Creed,” which encourages them to be “strong in spirit and independent.” Women with an eye for exciting excursions may connect with Dirty Girl Adventures to book their next kayaking, hiking, camping or private adventure in the Topeka area — and their
The Adventure Cove is a floating playground and swim area the whole family is sure to enjoy. The floating playground allows swimmers to slide, swing, rock climb, bounce, balance and more. Keep the fun going with a ride on one of the lake’s paddle boats, canoes, kayaks or paddle boards — all available to rent throughout the day! Adventure Cove opens for the warmer season each year on Memorial Day weekend. BMX
BMX is a family friendly sport that promotes competition among kids, as well as adults. For Topekans, Heartland BMX is the sport’s local hub. Since the 1980s, Crestview Park has been home to the premier dirt BMX track, which hosts American Bicycle Association-sanctioned BMX races and clinics. Heartland BMX provides a space for bikers to make friends, engage in friendly competition and become part of a dedicated BMX community. BMX, or bicycle motocross, was V i s i tTo p e k a.c o m
created in the late 1960s and has continued to grow since. By 1981, the International BMX Federation was formed, and the first world championship was held the following year. In 1993, BMX was recognized by the International Cycling Union. The sport made its Olympic debut in 2008 at the summer games in Beijing. On a local level, opportunities to participate in BMX racing include riding at Heartland BMX and competing in the Sunflower State Games. CAMPING
For those wanting to spend time in nature and sleep under the stars, look no further than Topeka. The capital city offers several different options for camping, including Capital City KOA, which is the largest and top-rated campground in the Topeka area. The local KOA campground features full-service RV sites complete with free cable TV and Wi-Fi access. It also offers large, open tent sites and three types of cabin rentals. Other amenities include fishing ponds, a playground, a hiking trail, an exercise room, Kamp K-9 for the family dog and a new salt-water pool. Another great option is the Lake Shawnee campground, which sports 123 campsites for RV and tent-dwelling campers. All sites have electrical hookups, Ted Ensley Gardens, Lake Shawnee
and a couple are handicap accessible. Water is also available to campers through direct on-site hookups or a nearby filling station, depending on the season. There are two bathhouses for campers, each of which includes showers, bathrooms and a laundry area. A natural lake cove, or swimming beach, is located by the campground and open to registered campers between sunrise and sunset. There is also a playground and fishing area available near the campsites. Other notable camping locations in Topeka and the surrounding area include the following: • Forbes Landing RV Park • Topeka Hilltop Campground • Perry State Park • Deer Creek Valley RV Park Looking to camp in style? From The Top: Glamping Experience offers unique tent set ups in Topeka and will travel up to 20 miles outside the city to create a luxury camping experience. Tailor your experience by choosing one of several different rental packages, including the “Romance Package,” “Movie Night Package,” “Family Night Package,” “Girls Night/Bachelorette Party Package” or a custom package. OUTDOOR RECREATION
Topeka’s outdoor adventures consist of many different recreational
opportunities. As you visit the city, you’ll find nearby locations that offer shooting sports, fishing, hunting and more. Just southwest of the city sits Ravenwood Lodge, which features a sporting clays course and guided hunts. Following your outdoor activities, enjoy an overnight bed-and-breakfast experience at one of Ravenwood’s lodges. If fishing is more your style, make your way to one of Topeka’s hottest waterfronts. Kaw River State Park offers a boat ramp and fishing access. If you want more of a lake scene, Lake Shawnee is open year-round for fishing. The 410-acre lake boasts a heated dock, boat ramps and fishing coves. For a longer list of public fishing areas, visit parks.snco.us/44/fishing. Looking for a more laid-back outdoor hang? Well, grab your hammock and post up at one of our local parks! When you’re looking for an escape from the stress of everyday life, we find there’s nothing quite like communing with nature for an afternoon. Whether you’re searching for a place to hang your hammock, unpack your folding chair or roll out the picnic blanket, we recommend checking out one of these local spots to find your inner peace: • Gage Park • Warren Nature Area • Iliff Commons • Lake Shawnee • Kaw River State Park @fromthetopglamping

DISC GOLF
No matter where you are in the city, you’re only a backhand throw away from a great disc golf course. Okay, you may have to take a short drive — but it’ll be worth it, we promise! The capital city offers about seven different disc golf courses that range in difficulty to serve seasoned players and newbies alike. Play a round solo or with friends, or take part in a local league night to put your skills to the test. If you have the urge, you can even compete locally in a variety of tournaments held each year for competitors of all ages. Most notable may be the Capital City Classic tournament hosted by Dynamic Discs, which is based in Emporia, Kansas, and has grown into one of the nation’s top disc golf retailers. They host tournaments annually, including a professionals’ tournament in Emporia that draws elite competitors from around the world. Whether you’re looking to practice
your throws, play competitively or just blow off some steam, the capital city has your disc-golf needs covered. The following Topeka courses are never short of green space and offer a variety of terrain. Local tip: Join the “Dawn to Dusk Disc Club” group on Facebook to stay abreast of the latest league news and local disc-golf events. BIG SHUNGA PARK Big Shunga features an 18-hole, par 60 course with permanent baskets and grass tee pads. DG Course Review calls this course “long and very challenging, using well-placed trees, elevation changes, tucked pins and out-of-bounds areas. A tremendous balance of open bomb holes and tight technical holes.” CRESTVIEW PARK EAST This mostly wooded and moderately hilly 18-hole course consists of many technical holes. Situated along Shunganunga Creek, water comes into play on seven of the holes. V i s i tTo p e k a.c o m

CRESTVIEW PARK WEST One of the most popular courses for local disc golfers, Crestview West features 18 holes, concrete tee pads, multiple pin placements and defined fairways. It is also one of the oldest courses in Kansas. EDGEWATER PARK Adjacent to Crestview Park, Edgewater is a nine-hole course with moderately wooded terrain. A creek running through the course results in several technical shots. LAKE SHAWNEE On the banks of Lake Shawnee, this 18-hole open course features concrete tee pads, elevation changes and few obstacles (mostly trees). Hole 18 requires players to shoot across a cove, making for a challenging finish to an otherwise manageable round. Fun fact: There is also a second, alternative 18-hole course at Lake Shawnee that is open seasonally; it begins and ends at Reynolds Lodge. RICE PARK Located near the Rice Community Center in East Topeka, this ninehole course offers concrete pads and mostly open fairways with enjoyable intermediate lengths.

ant to know where in Topeka the locals go for a bite to eat? Some of these coveted locations have been around for decades and still provide amazing fare. From old-fashioned diners that serve combos complete with burgers, fries and pie to more modern establishments offering soul food that’s made from scratch daily, Topeka is home to many dining delicacies. Since 1948, Bobo’s Drive In — which was featured in 2008 on the hit show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” — has been known for its popular drive-up service. There is limited seating and an old-fashioned lunch counter inside, but Bobo’s classic car service continues to be a local favorite. Outside, a neon marquee adorns the building, and a large menu can be found facing vehicles that park under the drive-in canopy. Carhops take your order and deliver meals, so you never have to leave the luxury of your vehicle. You can’t go wrong ordering a cheeseburger and onion rings. Local tip: Don’t skip the pie! If you’ve now got burgers on your mind, add Prize Package to your list! Another location with deep roots, this local establishment has a huge following. While there isn’t seating on site, bags full of greasy goodness can be found on the premises and taken to go. Make sure to get there early or call in your order if you’re wanting to grab food, as the lunch line gets long. Local tip: Order the pepper jack cheese balls for a little fired-up treat! Topeka is no stranger to Tex-Mex, or to restaurants that have been around since the 70’s! Taco Villa, which is locally owned, meets both of those criteria. Taco Villa is known for offering a variety of al la carte options, as well as some combos. You can often find locals biting into the famous “Thing” — yes, that’s how it’s listed on the menu — while dipping chips into their famed queso. While the “Thing” is a bit indescribable, you can also find burritos, tacos, enchiladas 2022

and more. Other popular local Tex-Mex locations include Taco Al’s, which has been family owned since 1963; El Mezcal, which has two locations in town; and Tortilla Jacks, where everything is made from scratch. In the mood for a little soul food? Two newer locations in town offer just that. Nanny’s Soul Food and Soul Fire Food Co. serve homemade, original-recipe meals that will leave your mouth watering. Nanny’s, now located in the NOTO Arts & Entertainment District, is Topeka’s hottest location for gumbo, greens and other comfort food. With each visit, you’re sure to leave happy and full. Meanwhile, Soul Fire Food Co. on California Avenue is known for its slow-smoked barbecue. This local favorite, which started as a food truck, serves up wings, ribs, pulled pork and more. Local tip: Try their Indian tacos with homemade frybread, and be sure to order Mom’s Rum Cake when it’s available. If you weren’t already drooling, now is the time to start! Check out VisitTopeka.com for news about other local hotspots. OTHER GREAT BURGER SPOTS:

Topeka?

ave a hankering for craft beer? With several local breweries, Topeka will help you wet your whistle and then
some! Check out these local brewpubs for a good time or just to unwind.
NORSEMEN BREWING COMPANY For years, couples Emily and Jared Rudy and Adam and Melissa Rosdahl spent their free time concocting beer recipes. As they mingled and met with brewing professionals, local brewers’ guilds and craft beer consumers to cultivate their knowledge and perfect their technique, the group decided they wanted to create an establishment of their own. Opened in 2016, Norsemen Brewing is known for its small batch hand-crafted beers, signature cocktails and fabulous food. The brewery’s name was chosen for its alignment with North Topeka and connection to the now-closed Northern Hills Junior High School, whose mascot was the Norsemen. Try one of their staples like the Odin’s One-EyePA or the Shield Maiden Wheat. At Norsemen, all beers are “mortal brewed, Odin approved.”

THE BLIND TIGER BREWERY & RESTAURANT
Opened in 1995, The Blind Tiger is considered the grandfather of Topeka craft breweries. As the first craft brewery in the capital city, this local establishment is named for the Prohibition-era practice of displaying stuffed tigers at illegal drinking establishments to alert potential patrons to the availability of illicit alcohol. The restaurant and brewery is known for its flagship beers, which can almost always be found on tap. They include the Raw Wheat, Country Seat Wheat, Raspberry Wheat, Holy Grail Pale Ale, Tiger Paw Porter and Tiger Bite IPA. The establishment has won nearly two dozen awards at both national and international brewing competitions. Most notably, it was named champion brewmaster and brewery at the 2014 World Beer Cup, in the Large Brewpub Division. More recently, Blind Tiger took home a bronze medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival for its Blind Tiger Bock. V i s i tTo p e k a.c o m

Glaciers Edge Winery
Wineries
E
xcellent wineries located just outside the capital city are a “grape” time and offer an array
of delightful varietals that leave little to be desired. CROOKED POST WINERY
Crooked Post Winery, located just north of Topeka near Lake Perry, is a unique venue inspired by Italian architecture and European wines. Once a vineyard providing hand-picked grapes to Kansas wineries nearby, Crooked Post opened its own winery and tasting room in 2014. Crooked Post’s wines are made from locally grown French-American hybrid wine grapes, which are hand-picked and pruned on site and grown without insecticides. Each wine is made true to the flavor of the grape it comes from, with the winery offering reds, whites, rosés and unique fruit blends. Contact the winery for information about tours, tastings or their coveted harvest parties, which usually take place during August and September and allow guests to participate in the wine-making process. Crooked Post also hosts monthly events in their 900-square-foot event room, which can be reserved for private parties. Spend time in their tasting room or on the patio to enjoy wines, woodfired pizzas, and gourmet cheese and bread baskets. GLACIERS EDGE WINERY
Glaciers Edge Winery began with just eight grape vines. From there, another 120 were planted. As the owners learned more about viticulture and witnessed the growth of the Kansas wine industry, they wondered “Why not us?” and several years later, Glaciers Edge became a staple of the area’s wine scene. Today, nearly 3,000 vines fuel the winery’s wine making, with more plantings to come. They offer fine grape and fruit wines that range from dry to sweet, and free tastings are available. Sit on the venue’s covered porch or open patio, and enjoy the beautiful country surroundings as you sip. Picnics and snacks are welcome. With a mission focused on being a positive ambassador of the local wine, food and tourism industry, Glaciers Edge produces exceptional wines straight from the Heartland.

PRAIRIE FIRE WINERY
Located in the Flint Hills, Prairie Fire Winery is a “dirt to glass” operation with some of the best views in the state of Kansas. Make the short drive from Topeka, and it will be easy to see why! But don’t be fooled — this winery has more to offer than just views. Located on 60 acres, Prairie Fire produces award-winning wines that are hand-crafted from Kansas-grown grapes. Visit their tasting room at the vineyard to try some of the more than 15 different varietals they offer. Book your tasting online for an easy experience. After sampling their wine selection, walk through Prairie Fire’s rows and rows of grapes for superb photo opportunities. You’ll also want to check out the other artisan products Prairie Fire has become known for, such as their wine cheese and candles. Z&M TWISTED VINES WINES AND WINERY
In 2020, Z&M Twisted Vines, which started in Leavenworth, expanded its reach, opening a vineyard and tasting room in Lawrence, which is just a 30-minute drive from Topeka. This “winery with a twist” produces innovative wines made with responsibly-grown grapes. The veteran-owned-and-operated business plays host to a variety of celebrations, events and get-togethers, such as their bingo nights. EMPTY NESTER’S WINERY
Empty Nester’s Winery in historic downtown Lecompton nearby is true to its name, as it is owned and operated by two empty nesters who started making fruit wines years ago in their basement. After deciding to make a business out of it, they opened this charming winery, which makes and bottles its wine in house. Empty Nester’s exclusively produces fruit wines, rather than your typical reds and whites, so this is a great option if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path winetasting experience.

COVER STORY: TOP CITY TAKE
T
he following responses were provided by Jeff Kready, whose family is featured on the cover
of our 2022 Visitor’s Guide. We hope you enjoy their #TopCityTake! WHAT IS YOUR CONNECTION TO TOPEKA?
A: There’s no place like home, and for me, that’s Topeka! I was raised there, graduated high school and college there, and worked as an elementary school music teacher there before moving to New York to pursue acting. WHAT BRINGS YOU BACK TO TOPEKA TIME AFTER TIME?
The people! Not just my family and friends, but the people of the community that make you feel welcome. Each time I come home, I am surprised at how genial everyone is; folks strike up conversation in a way that is uncommon in a big city. It’s refreshing and wonderful. WHAT ADVICE MIGHT YOU HAVE FOR OUTSIDERS LOOKING TO VISIT OR MOVE TO THE AREA?
Topeka is malleable! It has so much to offer a wide array of people. It’s an inclusive community that is big enough for city folks to have everything they need, and small enough to know your neighbors. WHAT MOST SURPRISED OR IMPRESSED YOU ABOUT TOPEKA ON YOUR MOST RECENT VISIT?
How much it keeps evolving and progressing. It’s nice to see the new luxury movie theater and many restaurants that have sprung up, an increasing number of coffee shops (we New Yorkers like our caffeine handy), and the way downtown Topeka has completely transformed since I was a kid. It’s cute! With live music, food trucks and craft beers, Topeka is as hipster friendly as Brooklyn, but with a big, blue sky and average home prices that are about 80% less!

WHAT DO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY LIKE TO DO WHILE VISITING TOPEKA? ARE THERE ANY RESTAURANTS OR ATTRACTIONS THAT ARE A MUST-SEE WHEN YOU’RE IN TOWN?
We definitely have a hit list of restaurants that are musts while we’re in town. They include burgers and homemade apple pie at Bobo’s Drive In; barbecue and a huge beer selection at The Blind Tiger; a uniquely Topeka Tex-Mex experience at Taco Villa; and the best fried cashew chicken in the world at Hunam, which is still my favorite Chinese restaurant (and I live in a city with lots of them). IF YOU COULD PLAN YOUR PERFECT, FAMILY-FRIENDLY DAY IN THE CAPITAL OF KANSAS, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
With two kids in tow, a perfect, family-friendly day in Topeka definitely starts at Gage Park, with a trip to the world-famous Topeka Zoo, a whirl on the carousel, a ride on the mini-train, fun on the playground, and a walk through the beautiful rose garden. We could spend all day there! It would be great to head up to NOTO for lunch at one of the many eateries there and to take a stroll through the district to see the murals and public art. Then, we’d probably head downtown to see the beautiful capitol building; I’ve been mesmerized by the rotunda, paintings and history inside since I was a kid. While we’re in the area, we might grab a milkshake and play some games at The Pennant, a local favorite. And then finally, I’d head for dinner and a show at the Topeka Civic Theatre and Academy — the oldest continuously operating community dinner theater in the country, which puts on top-notch productions the whole family can enjoy! That would be an amazing day in Topeka that would thoroughly tucker out two kids (and two grown-ups)! Read more: VisitTopeka.com/Kready

Scott Stebner: What’s your favorite place to eat in topeka?
What’s your favorite thing on the menu?. The brisket tacos at Iron Rail. I don’t want to use the term “life changing”, but … What’s your favorite place to visit in town?
Most of our friends and family are outdoors loving people, so we go hiking at Iliff Commons or to Governor’s Mansion. They always talk bout how beautiful it is under the tree canopy. If they have kids, we definitely take them to the zoo. Why you like living Topeka?
Chelsea Smith: What does a perfect day in Topeka look like for you?
The perfect day for me would be going hiking through the governors trails or taking A walk through one of the many parks here in Topeka, going out for some food and then ending my day in NOTO at Studio 62 where I can grab A drink and create some art with many wonderful people. where do you like to take friends and family when they’re in town?
I grew up in California. Everything was so busy there, all the time. Topeka is the perfect mix of a smaller town that still has great culture and plenty of things to do.
I would take them to NOTO and show them the awesome little eclectic town, that seems to be A little world of its own. There are so many things to do in NOTO. From book stores and escape rooms to restaurants and bars.
What’s Topeka’s best-kept secret?
What’s Topeka’s best-kept secret?
I’ve lived in Southern California, the Central Coast, the Bay Area, and in the Rockies, and I can’t believe that it took me moving to Topeka to learn to love mountain biking. When you think of Kansas, you think flat and boring. But I’ve come to absolutely love the trail system here and all the other outdoor activities there are. You can gravel bike, go for a run on the Shunga trail, hike with your dog at Illif, or go kayaking at the lakes or on the river. It definitely has an outdoor community.

Tulips at Twiglight @thespottedguy
Each spring, Topeka becomes a beautiful flower-filled wonderland. From purple to yellow to pink to two-toned tulips, locations across the city plant more than 100,000 of these colorful bulbs. Weatherpermitting, this annual occasion brings travelers from far and wide to locations like Gage Park, Ted Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee and Ward-Meade Park’s Botanical Gardens. Visitors can stroll through the gardens for photos, to relax and even to participate in special events. While seeing tulips on display during the day is a picturesque portrait of rainbow fields, an evening display changes the game. Tulips at Twilight offers such a sight, taking place each year at Ward-Meade Park. With Tulips at Twilight, the usual flowers are accompanied by glowing sculptures, twinkling lights and brightly lit paths, allowing visitors to feast their eyes on the garden’s glow.

Cultural Festivals Fiesta Mexicana
F
or more than 85 years, Fiesta Mexicana, organized by Topeka’s Our Lady of Guadalupe parish and community volunteers, has celebrated Mexican culture and history, and it claims to be one of the oldest community Hispanic celebrations in the U.S.
Topeka’s first Fiesta Mexicana took place on Aug. 17, 1933. It lasted for just one day but proved to be so financially successful that it was held again the next year. In its early years, Fiesta Mexicana was solely attended by Our Lady of Guadalupe parishioners and their extended families. Over time, the event grew. It went from one day to five, began to welcome attendees from across the Topeka community, and expanded from just one city block to several blocks throughout the church neighborhood. Today, Fiesta Mexicana is typically held in the summer and includes a parade down Kansas Avenue, the selection of a king and queen, live musical and dance performances, a variety of artisan and food vendors, multiple nights of carnival-themed fun, and more. The fiesta is truly an event through which diversity is celebrated and culture comes alive.

At the heart of Fiesta Mexicana is the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, which sits in Topeka’s Oakland neighborhood. Each year, church parishioners make and sell authentic Mexican food – from homemade sopa and tamales to tostadas and tacos – as a fundraiser for the nearby Holy Family Catholic School. Given parishioners’ months of preparation, it’s no surprise they are known to sell over 10,000 food items a night! During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fiesta Mexicana has been held in a more limited capacity. In 2021, the event primarily consisted of food sales. (And yes, they sold out!) Though dates for the 2022 Fiesta Mexicana are still being determined, we do know one thing – the spirit of Fiesta Mexicana is alive and well in our capital city. We can’t wait to celebrate with you once again.

EQUALITY HOUSE
Perhaps Topeka’s best-known monument to Pride, the Equality House is an icon of the fight for LGBTQ rights. Managed by the nonprofit Planting Peace, this Topeka landmark, which is painted rainbow to emulate the Pride flag, has rightfully become a selfie hotspot. Feel free to stop and take a pic, donate to the cause, or leave an encouraging message on the building. Visit the Mott House next door, as it celebrates transgender Pride. See the Equality House section in this guide for more information. SHOP PRIDE
Located in the heart of NOTO, Pinkadilly is a hip boutique that offers its customers a unique selection of gifts, clothing, jewelry and other novelties. The retailer also offers a variety of Pride merchandise and is an outspoken proponent in the community for LGBTQ rights, diversity, equity and inclusion. Pride gear can also found at Reliant Apparel in downtown Topeka! From wearable items to patches you can add to your favorite bag, the apparel company doubles as a shop for Pride creations. PRIDE LIVE!
While in NOTO, be sure to visit an eclectic art bar and entertainment venue by the name of Studio 62. Owned by wife-and-wife duo Chelsea and Jacques Smith, this establishment capitalizes on the couple’s love for art and mixology and has been known to host regular drag shows. Topeka’s gourmet burger bar, The Burger Stand, is also looking to host drag events in the near future at their new location in Brookwood Plaza. Another great way to support the LGBTQ community is to like and join local pride groups, such as Topeka Pride and LGBTQ pride - Topeka. Pride Kansas, a new group to the scene, is also in the process of organizing Kansas’ first-ever statewide pride event in September 2022. Pride Kansas aims to promote inclusivity in the state by launching a Pride Week and providing a safe place for all to celebrate. Find out more at PrideKansas.org.

2022 event will take place June 11, rain or shine! Beer vendors include local favorites, regional mainstays and national heavy hitters. Tap That attendees receive a sampling glass they can fill again and again with the finest brews such vendors have to offer. From signature sours and stouts to alluring ales, ambers and IPAs, Tap That Topeka has plenty of boozy fun in store. Between beers, stop by food trucks parked on the premises to grab some grub, or enjoy a DJ-fueled dance party in the street. If liquid courage calls for 2022

some competition, challenge fellow attendees to a game of cornhole or Jenga. And, of course — don’t forget to hydrate! To heighten your Tap That experience, consider treating yourself to a ticket upgrade! Not only do VIP-ticket holders have access to a limited-edition VIP glass and lanyard glass holder; they’re also able to enter the event an hour early, enjoy special VIP beers, and take advantage of a VIP-only seating area and private restrooms. If you can’t wait until June, grab a
beer and start planning your trip today! Wearing a costume to Tap That or donning an impressive pretzel-necklace creation, just might make you eligible for a special prize. And when the beer stops flowing at Tap That, don’t fret! Walk over to The Celtic Fox for a “Second Saturday” concert, or check out Topeka’s downtown restaurants, to keep the fun alive. ake an evening stroll through the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center this holiday season to experience a light display like no other.
Suitable for all ages — and a great experience for photo ops — this event will have you enthralled by canopies of lights and colorful animal-shaped displays. Amble through lit tunnels synced to music, and watch cascades of beams as they dance about. Zoo Lights is a seasonal fundraiser that benefits the Topeka Zoo’s programming, exhibits and conservation efforts. The event begins in late November and runs through Christmas day. This family-friendly event features a visit with Santa, reindeer on location, special holiday baking events with Mrs. Claus, hot chocolate and more. In 2021, the zoo also introduced rentable igloos, complete with heaters and optional food and drink packages. Zoo Lights also includes a “Dream Night” each year for those individuals with special needs, who may need less stimulation than a typical Zoo Lights outing might offer. “Dream Night,” which is made possible by partnering with other local organizations, provides an environment in which individuals with special needs, and their families, can feel comfortable to enjoy the lights and other activities at their own pace.

vergy Plaza, a one-acre venue on Kansas Avenue, is the hub of downtown Topeka’s thriving
outdoor performing arts scene. During warmer months, the plaza’s 50-foot stage is often booked, featuring a variety of live entertainment. Farmers and makers markets fill the plaza weekly to share their creations with the community. And the venue’s 30foot digital screen is known to show movies for the whole family to enjoy. Bring chairs and blankets for the ideal setup, or lounge beside the plaza’s 16-foot-long fire pit to stay warm when temperatures drop. Stormont Vail Events Center
W
ith a $48 million renovation under its belt, Stormont Vail Events Center, Topeka’s largest entertainment
complex, is back in the business of providing top-notch events for the city and region.
Upgrades to Landon Arena and expansion of the event center’s Exhibition Hall were central to the renovation, which aimed to heighten the customer experience by adding new amenities and upgrading existing ones. By standing up the Prairie Band Party Desk, Stormont Vail Events Center is able to offer premium tables and seating, along with a full beverage service option within Landon Arena. Throughout the arena, seating has been upgraded. A new video board and ribbon displays enhance viewers’ visual experiences, and a recently installed state-of-the-art sound system promises to take visitors’ audio adventures to a new level. The largest phase of the renovation was the expansion of Exhibition Hall. This hall, which was previously 45,000-square-feet, has grown to more than 73,000-square feet. Its single-level layout allows Exhibition Hall to host shows, tournaments, fairs and a variety of other events. Domer Livestock Arena, already one of the best equestrian event centers in the Midwest, received upgraded stalling, an arena enclosure, and upgraded food and beverage facilities. Those upgrades are expected to elevate Domer, making the patron experience more exciting and encouraging repeat attendance. 2022
