Los Olivos Wine Merchant Cafe

Aging into Excellence

In

the twenty years that Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café has stood at the center of this winecentric town, owners Sam and Shawnda Marmorstein have never settled for what their business is; they’re always moving toward what it’s becoming. What began primarily as a wine store offering some simple pizzas and pastas evolved to be an even better wine store with some 500 bottles now available and a dining room serving a sophisticated seasonal menu. Now, in the latest evolution, the couple has established an organic garden at their Los Olivos home, where they also grow grapes for and produce their Bernat Estate wines. Lettuces, squash, zucchini, bell peppers, tomatoes, carrots, celery, cucumbers and more are now picked and plated the same day, and flowers from the farm adorn the tables. The couple’s commitment to quality is evident everywhere. They serve Peet’s espresso and Green Star organic fair-trade coffee. They support local producers of meats, produce and fish. Everything is made from scratch, from the satisfying bread to the delicious entrées like lamb shank with panzanella and incredible desserts, such as the Café Scream. That sublime treat combines flourless chocolate cake, caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream made in a 2.5-gallon maker handed down from Sam’s mother. The café just gets better with age. 2879 GRAND AVENUE, LOS OLIVOS • 805.688.7265 • LOSOLIVOSCAFE.COM

and vine-covered acres, into the mountains. Don’t be deceived by the historical ambiance and Victorian aesthetic, as behind these historic doors, the offerings are distinctly modern and sophisticated - from elegant clothing and jewelry boutiques, antiques and art galleries to world-class wine tasting and gourmet dining, Los Olivos has something to offer the most discriminating visitors. Los Olivos hosts a variety of unique events and festivals throughout the year. If you love world class jazz, wine, gourmet food and supporting an organization that improves the lives of others, then the Los Olivos Jazz and Olive Festival is the event for you. Enjoy tastings from more than thirty wineries and gourmet hors d'oeuvres from local chefs. This tasty event is hosted by the Rotary Club of Los Olivos every June in Lavinia Campbell Park. For a dose of small town charm, check out the Annual Day in the Country, held every October for the past thirty-four years. Indulge in the great food and family fun which defines the Los Olivos lifestyle. Enjoy musical performances, the tree lighting ceremony, luminaria adorned streets, and the smell of roasted walnuts wafting through the crisp winter air during the Olde Fashioned Christmas in Los Olivos (Dec.) This is definitely a romantic return to small town holiday celebration. For a complete listing of events, go to pages
