Welcome to beautiful Smith Mountain Lake

In our quest to find the perfect spot to lay down roots, my wife and I visited dozens of lakes across the country over a number of years.

What we ultimately discovered is that none hold a candle to Smith Mountain Lake.

And we’re not alone in our finding. Abundant outdoor activities, a slower pace of life, low cost of living and temperate year-round weather make SML a beacon for residents, remote workers and the tens of thousands who visit our shores each year for unforgettable vacations.

Boating, fishing, water and wake sports are among the most popular activities all year and especially in the warmer summer months. With more than 500 miles of shoreline reaching across three counties, there’s plenty of space to explore. And when you’re ready for an off-water break, our region has an endless array of options such as golf, hiking, shopping and cultural delights.

Residents here experience the good life in all four stunning seasons. Businesses thrive, healthcare is state of the art, and schools and educational facilities receive high marks on every level. Lake real estate options range from rental options to luxury mansions and everything in between.

And with its widely available broadband internet, SML has become an extremely popular spot for remote workers. Because, seriously, if your job allowed you to live anywhere, why wouldn’t you choose a place as picturesque, fun-filled and spirited as Smith Mountain Lake?

In this guide, you’ll find insight into an abundant amount of amazing activities to be found on and off the water, historic sites, art and culture, shopping, restaurants, lodging, festivals and events and so much more. So whether you’re looking to plan the ideal getaway or make SML your part-time or full-time home, we’re confident the resources you need can be found on the following pages.

Oh, and when you do get here, please be sure and stop by our visitor’s center at Bridgewater Plaza and say hello. Our friendly staff and volunteers would be thrilled to answer questions, point you toward things to do or recommend services from our hundreds of Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce members.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

CANOES & KAYAKS

For a more leisurely experience, consider bringing a canoe or kayak to paddle around SML’s shorelines. Marinas and retailers also rent them. These crafts are best suited for sunrise or late afternoon excursions to avoid heavy boat traffic.

If you don’t own the gear for your favorite water sport, it’s easy to find and often inexpensive to rent. There are a number of commercial rental companies around the lake for everything from skis, inflatables and water toys, to boats, wake boards and paddle boards.

LIFE JACKETS

There must be a readily accessible, properly fitting, wearable (Type I, II, III, or V) USCG-approved life jacket for each person on the boat. Any child under the age of 13 is required by federal law to wear a life jacket.

BOATING SAFETY COURSE

All PWC operators age 14 and older and all motorboat operators (regardless of age) need to take a boating safety course, which are available in person or online. Exceptions apply for boat renters. Find a listing of boating safety courses near you by logging onto dgif.virginia.gov

Motorized vehicles must have a valid registration card onboard and a validation decal.

NAVIGATION LIGHTS

Recreational boats, while underway, are required to display navigation lights between sunset and sunrise and during periods of restricted visibility.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER

Boats over 26 feet and boats under 26 feet that meet certain conditions must have USCG-approved, adequately charged fire extinguishers aboard.

HORN, WHISTLE OR BELL

Navigation rules require sound signals to be made under certain circumstances. A four-second blast audible for a half mile is required. If you do not have a horn, a loud whistle or air horn is acceptable.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Avoid pulling passengers on water skis, wake boards or inflatables on Smith Mountain Lake’s main channel, where boat traffic is heaviest. With more than 500 miles of shoreline, SML offers abundant coves that provide a much safer experience for your water sports fun.

About Dam Time

Smith Mountain Lake is considered the recreation capital of Southwest Virginia, welcoming tourists and catering to the approximately 22,000 residents who call it home. But did you know the two-dam project that created it is an engineering marvel that produces clean energy for the surrounding region?

SML was created in the 1960s when Appalachian Power constructed the Smith Mountain Pumped Storage Project to dam the Roanoke River, erecting two dams for the primary purpose of creating hydroelectricity.

The system generates power by passing water stored in the upper reservoir (Smith Mountain Lake) through massive turbine generators and discharging it into

the lower reservoir (Leesville Lake) where it’s stored and then pumped back to SML to be reused.

According to Appalachian Power, there is no set schedule for operation. Electricity is usually generated when demand is high, and water from the lower reservoir is pumped back when demand is low. The process can change hourly depending on demand, which is why SML water levels fluctuate slightly each day.

To learn more about the process, the history of the region and fascinating details of how the dams were created, plan a visit to the Joseph H. Vipperman Visitors Center in Sandy Level. It’s free and open year-round. For hours of operation, visit smithmtn.com.

History buffs will treasure a trip to Bedford’s National D-Day Memorial, a powerful and moving tribute to the more than 4,000 Allied soldiers who lost their lives on June 6, 1944, in one of the most pivotal battles of World War II.

Known as D-Day, the invasion of the beaches of Normandy, France, took a brutal toll on the small, close-knit town of Bedford, located approximately 30 minutes northeast of Smith Mountain Lake. Nineteen citizen-soldiers, now known as the Bedford Boys, died that day, earning the town the somber distinction of suffering the nation’s highest per-capita D-Day loss.

The National D-Day Memorial, which was built in the late 1990s as a tribute to the valor, fidelity and sacrifice of all Allied Forces, sits majestically atop a hill on the outskirts of Bedford and offers sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. dday.org

In 2019, just prior to the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the Bedford Boys Tribute Center opened in downtown Bedford. The museum is located in renovated space that was once Green’s Drug Store, the spot where Western Union telegrams delivered the community’s devastating casualty reports nearly five weeks after D-Day.

A number of historical artifacts are on display at the tribute center, including personal effects and mementos on loan from families of the Bedford Boys, and a replica of the Western Union teletype station. bedfordboystributecenter.com

Family-friendly happenings are scheduled April through October at the large, covered pavilion that can accommodate 400 people and features professional sound and lighting. There’s also green space for picnics and a concession area for food, beer, wine and other beverages. Make plans to join in the fun while helping raise funds for Smith Mountain Lake nonprofit organizations.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION

Smith Mountain Lake’s natural beauty has attracted a number of filmmakers over the years. The 1991 comedy hit “What About Bob?,” which starred Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss, continues to entice dedicated fans to SML each year to visit prominent sights in the film.

“Lake Effects,” a 2011 family dramedy that starred Jane Seymour and Scottie Thompson, heavily showcased the beauty of the region and tapped into enthusiastic support from local businesses, artists and members of the community.

Most recently, producers of “Princess Cut 3: Beauty from Ashes” filmed in several locations in the area, including Smith Mountain Lake Alpaca Farm. The movie, which starred Giselle Torres and Chandler Macocha, was released in early 2022.

CENTER IN THE SQUARE

Center in the Square hosts a variety of regional arts, educational opportunities and cultural organizations in downtown Roanoke. Check out the Harrison Museum of African American Culture, the Roanoke Pinball Museum (where you can play!), a children’s museum and a science museum. Train buffs will want to explore the O. Winston Link Museum located in the former passenger station of the N&W Railway.

“Fishing University,” an Emmy-award winning bass fishing show that has been teaching the world to fish for more than 35 years, filmed over the course of three days at Smith Mountain Lake in 2022. Show hosts Charlie Ingram and Ben Ballou were joined by pro anglers Kyle Welcher and Wes Logan for the episode, which aired on Outdoor Channel and World Fishing Network.

In conjunction with the Smith Mountain Lake Association and Tri-County Lakes Administrative Commission, Chamber staff and community volunteers dedicate much time and effort to this event, which is critical to maintaining the overall health, beauty and safety of SML.

SML RESTAURANT WEEK

Designed to showcase our diverse restaurant scene, Smith Mountain Lake Restaurant Week takes place each April with participating establishments offering discounts and specials in a variety of price points. It’s a fun (and tasty!) way to try a new eatery or support an established favorite.

SML PIRATE DAYS
