And with its widely available broadband internet, SML has become an extremely popular spot for remote workers. Because, seriously, if your job allowed you to live anywhere, why wouldn’t you choose a place as picturesque, fun-filled and spirited as Smith Mountain Lake?
In this guide, you’ll find insight into an abundant amount of amazing activities to be found on and off the water, historic sites, art and culture, shopping, restaurants, lodging, festivals and events and so much more. No person under the age of 14 may operate a personal watercraft (PWC). Those operators 14 and 15 MUST show proof of completing an approved and accepted boating safety course either in a classroom or online. The challenge exam or other provisions of the Virginia Education Compliance Requirement do not meet the requirements of the age restriction law.
There must be a readily accessible, properly fitting, wearable (Type I, II, III, or V) USCG-approved life jacket for each person on the boat. Any child under the age of 13 is required by federal law to wear a life jacket.
All PWC operators age 14 and older and all motorboat operators (regardless of age) need to take a boating safety course, which are available in person or online. Exceptions apply for boat renters. Find a listing of boating safety courses near you by logging onto dgif.virginia.gov
Motorized vehicles must have a valid registration card onboard and a validation decal.
Recreational boats, while underway, are required to display navigation lights between sunset and sunrise and during periods of restricted visibility.
Boats over 26 feet and boats under 26 feet that meet certain conditions must have USCG-approved, adequately charged fire extinguishers aboard.
Navigation rules require sound signals to be made under certain circumstances. A four-second blast audible for a half mile is required. If you do not have a horn, a loud whistle or air horn is acceptable.
Avoid pulling passengers on water skis, wake boards or inflatables on Smith Mountain Lake’s main channel, where boat traffic is heaviest. With more than 500 miles of shoreline, SML offers abundant coves that provide a much safer experience for your water sports fun.

Smith Mountain Lake is considered the recreation capital of Southwest Virginia, welcoming tourists and catering to the approximately 22,000 residents who call it home. But did you know the two-dam project that created it is an engineering marvel that produces clean energy for the surrounding region?
SML was created in the 1960s when Appalachian Power constructed the Smith Mountain Pumped Storage Project to dam the Roanoke River, erecting two dams for the primary purpose of creating hydroelectricity.
The system generates power by passing water stored in the upper reservoir (Smith Mountain Lake) through massive turbine generators and discharging it into
the lower reservoir (Leesville Lake) where it’s stored and then pumped back to SML to be reused.
According to Appalachian Power, there is no set schedule for operation. Electricity is usually generated when demand is high, and water from the lower reservoir is pumped back when demand is low. The process can change hourly depending on demand, which is why SML water levels fluctuate slightly each day.
To learn more about the process, the history of the region and fascinating details of how the dams were created, plan a visit to the Joseph H. Vipperman Visitors Center in Sandy Level. It’s free and open year-round. For hours of operation, visit smithmtn.com.
Part engineering achievement, part community treasure, the Smith Mountain Project is a focal point for recreation that helps drive the area’s economy.

History buffs will treasure a trip to Bedford’s National D-Day Memorial, a powerful and moving tribute to the more than 4,000 Allied soldiers who lost their lives on June 6, 1944, in one of the most pivotal battles of World War II.
Known as D-Day, the invasion of the beaches of Normandy, France, took a brutal toll on the small, close-knit town of Bedford, located approximately 30 minutes northeast of Smith Mountain Lake. Nineteen citizen-soldiers, now known as the Bedford Boys, died that day, earning the town the somber distinction of suffering the nation’s highest per-capita D-Day loss.
The National D-Day Memorial, which was built in the late 1990s as a tribute to the valor, fidelity and sacrifice of all Allied Forces, sits majestically atop a hill on the outskirts of Bedford and offers sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. dday.org
In 2019, just prior to the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the Bedford Boys Tribute Center opened in downtown Bedford. The museum is located in renovated space that was once Green’s Drug Store, the spot where Western Union telegrams delivered the community’s devastating casualty reports nearly five weeks after D-Day.
A number of historical artifacts are on display at the tribute center, including personal effects and mementos on loan from families of the Bedford Boys, and a replica of the Western Union teletype station. bedfordboystributecenter.com
