What to eat? The most popular Cajamarcan dishes include picante de papa con cuy frito (fried guinea pig accompanied with spicy potato and wheat rice), chicharrón con mote (pork cooked in its own fat accompanied by corn), humitas de maíz rellenas con queso (salted corn dough, filled with cheese wrapped in corn husk and steamed) and caldo verde (potato soup with fresh cheese pa ies, egg and regional aromatic herbs).

What to buy? Cajamarca’s craftsman work with wool, leather, wood, cabuya, clay and stone to represent their traditions. If a tasty souvenir is preferred, the rosquitas de manteca and cheeses are highly recommended.

What to see? Cajamarca Province The Santa Catalina Cathedral

Jirón Cruz de Piedra s/n, Main Square. The Cathedral was built under orders dictated by a 1655 royal cedula which decreed the establishment of a parish of Spaniards in the city. The facade of the temple, which gained the title of cathedral in 1682, is one of the finest examples of Peruvian Baroque, with its columns, cornices and carved alcoves. The main altar and the pulpit were worked in wood and gold leaf.

The Church of San Francisco

Jirón Dos de Mayo s/n. Opening hours of the Museum of Religious Art and the Crypts. Mon-Sat 10:00 am - 12:00 pm / 4:00- 6:00 pm. Ticket entry to the museum. Under the church’s main altar are crypts of Franciscans and of members of the indigenous nobility.

The Ransom Room

Jirón Amalia Puga 750. Opening hours, Tues-Sun: 8:30 am - 1:00 pm / 2:30 - 6:00 pm. Ticket entry. The only Inca structure remaining in the city has stone walls with trapezoidal form. It is known for having been the prison of the Inca Atahualpa, who offered Francisco Pizarro to fill the room two times over with silver and once with gold in exchange for his freedom.

The Belén Monumental Complex

Jirón Belén, cuadra 6. Opening hours, Tues-Sun: 8:30 am - 1:00 pm / 2:30 - 6:00 pm. Ticket entry. The complex includes the Baroque-style temple, the Medical Museum and the Archeological and Ethnographic Museum.

The Santa Apolonia Lookout

Jirón Dos de Mayo, two blocks from the Main Square. Opening hours, Mon - Sun: 7:00 am - 6:30 pm. Ticket entry. This hill was historically known as Rumi Tiana (”seat of stone” in quechua). A stairway leads to the summit, from where there is a privileged view of the city and the valley. The stairway also passes a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Fatima. In the surroundings we also find pre-Inca remains such as the so-called Silla del Inca.

The Monjas Concepcionistas Descalzas Church and Convent

The intersection of Jirón Urrelo and Jirón Amalia Puga. It was built using adobe, brick and stone. This temple is notable for the austerity of its architecture.

La Recoleta Church and Convent

The intersection of Avenida El Maestro and Avenida Los Héroes. Opening hours, Mon - Fri 06:30 am - 12:30 pm / 2:30 pm - 10:30 pm, Sat 2:30 pm - 10:30 pm, Sun 06:00 am - 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm - 10:30 pm. The church and the convent were built during the second half of the 17th century.


Nicolás Puga House and Museum

Jirón José Gálvez 634. Ticket entry by prior arrangement, telephone 076-361065 The collection here brings together items of Pre-Hispanic, colonial and republican art which belonged to the city’s most distinguished families.

San José Parish Church

The intersection of Jirón Miguel Iglesias and Jirón Angamos. Built in 1683, this is the only remaining adobe temple from the era.

Porcón Farm

30 km to the north of the city of Cajamarca (1 hr. by car). Opening hours, Mon - Sun: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. A visit to the farm of the Atahualpa Jerusalén Agrarian Cooperative permits participation in agricultural, livestock and forestry activities, as well as affording an understanding of the lifestyle of the area’s residents. A walk through its peaceful forest is enough for one to get to know the local flora and fauna.

The Otuzco Windows

8 km to the northeast of the city of Cajamarca (20 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon - Sun: 9:00 am- 6:00 pm. Ticket entry. This is a set of square niches carved into an immense volcanic rock formation. Its construction is linked to the Cajamarca culture which governed the area between AD 700 and AD 800.

The Combayo Windows

20 km to the northeast of the city of Cajamarca (1 hr. by car). Opening hours, Mon - Sun: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm These niches sculpted into immense rocks form a peculiar mosaic when seen from a distance. The visit is also an exceptional opportunity to see the grey-bellied comet, an endangered variety of hummingbird and unique in the world.

La Colpa Plantation

11 km to the southeast of the city of Cajamarca (15 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon - Sun: 8:00 am - 6:00 pm. Ticket entry. Now private property open to tourists, the plantation is a pleasant spot in the countryside dedicated to the raising of dairy ca le. The "calling of the cows” is something to behold.

The Cumbemayo Archeological Complex

20 km to the southeast of the city of Cajamarca (45 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon Sun: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. The complex consists of an aqueduct which dates from 1300 BC and a sanctuary with caves and walls covered with petroglyphs. A stone forest surrounds the complex with formations that seem like silhoue es of friars.

The Baths of the Inca

6 km to the east of the city of Cajamarca (20 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon - Fri: 5:00 am - 7:45 pm / Sat - Sun: 5:00 am - 7:30 pm. Ticket entry. Many accounts claim that the Inca Atahualpa was resting at this site, originally known as Pulltumarka, before his encounter with the conquistador Francisco Pizarro. It is a complex of hot spring wells and pools whose temperatures exceed 72 °C and whose medicinal properties are recommended for people who suffer skin, rheumatic or nervous disorders.

The Callacpuma Cave Paintings

9 km to the east of the city of Cajamarca (20 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon - Sun: 9:00 am - 6:00 pm The rocks on the Cerro Callacpuma mountain are covered with cave paintings which depict humans, animals and geometric figures. Also known as Puma Orco (Hill of the Puma), the paintings are estimated to be 15,000 years old.

The Llacanora Waterfall

13 km to the east of the city of Cajamarca (25 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon - Sun: 8:00 am - 6:00 pm. Ticket entry. A hike can be undertaken from this traditional and peaceful village to reach two waterfalls, whose flow increases during the rainy season (October to April), producing a wonderful natural spectacle. Saint Nicholas Lagoon

31 km to the southeast of the city of Cajamarca (1 hr. by car). It is considered the largest navigable natural lagoon in the department. It presents a varied flora and fauna, as well as floating islands surrounded by aquatic plants. It is a beautiful place where you can carry out rural tourism activities such as totora boat rides, artisanal fishing, trekking and birdwatching. You can also visit the guitar makers known as the Guitarreros and Los Sapitos in the district of Namora.

Mollepampa Artisan Route

3 km to the southeast of the city of Cajamarca. (10 min. by car) Neighborhood known for the ceramics workshops where the artist shows the visitor his creativity and dexterity in the manufacture of his products and promotes a space for interaction with the visitor in the elaboration of his own artistic product.

San Marcos Province Aguas Calientes Hot Spring

94 km to the southeast of the city of Cajamarca (1 hr. 50 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon - Sun: 8:00 am - 8:00 pm. Ticket entry. Hot spring baths here exceed 40 °C. They are considered therapeutic because of their high mineral content and relieve rheumatic and nervous system ailments. There are also lodgings and a restaurant.

San Pablo Province The Kuntur Wasi Site Museum

3 km from the city of San Pablo (7 min. by car). Opening hours, Tues-Sun: 9:00 am 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. The museum exhibits gold, semiprecious stones, ceramics and stone items, as well as human remains, all part of the discoveries in Kuntur Wasi. It also displays charts and photographs by the research team that led the excavation work. The museum is located in the lower part of the archeological site.

The Kuntur Wasi Archeological Complex

68 km to the west of the city of Cajamarca (2 hr. 30 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon-Sun: 8:00 am - 6:00 pm. Ticket entry. This stone ceremonial center dating back to 1100 BC consists of platforms, plazas and enclosures. Around 700 BC the inhabitants buried it, in order to build a larger complex. In approximatelyse250 BC it was destroyed and abandoned. Human s re corpses surrounded bys sacrifices and covered in cochineal have been found in Cip Lo what remains of Kuntur Av. Wasi.

146 km to the south of the city of Cajamarca (3 hr. 15 min. by car). Opening hours, Mon - Sun: 9:00 am - 2:00 pm The action of water in this cascade has formed natural contours, making it one of the most beautiful water falls in Cajabamba.

160 km to the west of the city of Cajamarca (3 hr. by car). Opening hours, Mon - Sun: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm The crystal clear waters of the La Playa River experience a dramatic 60 meter drop. Exploring the surrounding area and enjoying the green landscape is another way to take advantage of the visit.

Free entry with prior arrangement (5 days notice) by email to: ccalderon@sernanp.gob.pe and afrias@sernanp.gob.pe The reserve covers 2628 hectares and protects the upwelling of hot springs and the surrounding forests, which are the habitat of endangered species of flora and fauna. The types of forests found are the submontane tropical dry forest, the lower timberline tropical montane dry forest and the submontane tropical thorn forest.

Free entry with prior arrangement (15 days notice) by email to: pncutervo@sernanp.gob.pe The park was created to protect the emblematic flora and fauna of the Tarros mountain range, such as jaguars, oncillas, spectacled bears and o ers. A walk through this park leads to scrublands, dwarf forests and cloud forests. One of its main a ractions is the cave of the guácharo (the oilbird), inhabited by the nocturnal birds of the same name.

110 km to the north of the city of Jaén (4 hr. by car). Entry with prior arrangement (10 days notice) by email to: dcotrina@sernanp.gob.pe The goal of this sanctuary is the conservation of cloud forest flora and fauna. It is home to 33 species of birds and 17 species of mammals, including spectacled bears, mountain tapirs, monkeys, oncillas and deer.
