Welcome to Pembroke Birthplace of Henry VII and the Tudor Dynasty
Image courtesy of Darryl Davies Photography
Pembroke is a charming walled town which dates back over 900 years and is famous for its Norman Castle. Pembroke Castle is one of the most complete Norman castles in the UK. It is also the birthplace of Henry VII, founder of the Tudor dynasty, whose statue can be seen adjacent to South Quay, overlooking Castle Pond. Pembroke town is a textbook medieval fortified town with a central main street heading east from the castle gates and a moat or castle pond extending round much of the town. The old town walls are remarkably intact complete with defensive towers such as Barnards Tower, an impressive three-storied tower with a fore building over its entrance.

PEMBROKE’S EXCITING FUTURE Henry VII was the last king of England to win his throne on the field of battle and the first Tudor monarch, before his death aged 52 in 1509. Tourism bosses in Pembrokeshire hope to “reposition the town as a top tier visitor destination” and plan to develop a Henry Tudor visitor centre that will incorporate a museum, exhibition space, cafe and community hub.
As the birthplace of a former King of England, Pembroke is set for a major £4.5 million town centre development.
Another exciting project for the town is the commission of a statue of William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. In a remarkable career, he rose from penniless younger son of a minor noble to Regent of England, guardian of the boy king Henry III and re-issued Magna Carta under his own seal, thus ensuring its survival. He truly was the Greatest Knight England has ever seen.
Pembroke’s South Quay is set for a major redevelopment - this area is adjacent to the Castle Pond and in the shadow of the castle where King Henry VII was born in 1457.
Following the great success of the Henry VII statue on the South Quay, it is hoped that the William Marshall statue, when complete, will reside adjacent to the castle.

Pembroke’s Local Beaches Pembroke is blessed to have so many wonderful beaches close by - we have chosen a few of our favourites below.
Barafundle
(approximately 5 miles from Pembroke) “Wow!” is probably the best way to describe this beach. A small bay backed by dunes and pine trees, accessible only by a half mile walk from the nearest car park. Swathes of golden sand and crystal clear waters, Barafundle has been voted many, many times as one of the best beaches in Britain and the world; it’s often likened to a Caribbean beach! This pristine beach is isolated which means no facilities; so everything you take has to come back up over the cliffs.
Freshwater East
(approximately 4 miles from Pembroke)
Popular with boating enthusiasts that launch from the slipway at the southern end of the beach. 10 Visit Pembroke Town Guide | 2020
A wide, sandy beach is dune backed in the middle. A stream runs through the beach at its southern end.
Freshwater West
(approximately 6 miles from Pembroke) This wide, sandy beach, backed by an extensive system of dunes, has featured in recent feature films - Robin Hood starring Russel Crowe, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Their Finest starring Gemma Arterton and also Dunkirk (where the beach was used as a location double). As well as attracting Hollywood, the beach draws surfers from around the world to the best waves in the county!
Broad Haven South Beach, Bosherston (approximately 7 miles from Pembroke)
A wide sandy bay, Broad Haven South Beach can be accessed via the National Trust owned Bosherston Lakes, famous for its lily ponds and Eight Arch bridge set in the picturesque Stackpole Estate (pictured right). The beach features a clean stream that empties from the lily ponds - perfect for children to play in. Image courtesy of Denise Andrews

Broad Haven South is one of Pembrokeshire’s finest beaches in terms of the water quality. Its south-facing location and dramatic cliff views backed by sand dunes and expansive National Trust woodland. Visit Pembroke Town Guide | 2020 11
PEMBROKE TOWN HALL MUSEUM AND MURALS Pembroke Museum is situated in Pembroke’s Georgian Town Hall, a Grade II listed building of historic interest in its own right with much to interest the visitor. Painted on the walls of its foyer and staircase are the famous Pembroke Murals – a pictorial history of Pembroke through time painted by George and Jeanne Lewis, which is a must see. On the first floor (a lift is available for disabled access), is the old Courtroom which now houses Pembroke Museum where you can discover the fascinating Story of Pembroke. There is much of interest: amongst its collections are the silent movies of William Haggar, pioneer of the British cinema, as well as authentic 19th Century Welsh costume collection, an exhibition of children’s toys, maritime heritage and an extensive archive of history photographs, prints and oral history. Children are welcome and there is a children’s corner with activities.
Part of the Pembroke Murals in the Town Hall
On the first floor you can take a look at the Council Chamber where the Town Council still hold monthly meetings presided over by the Mayor. The museum is run entirely by volunteers and entry is free. Open weekdays 10am- 12.30pm, extended to 3pm in the summer season. Find out more on www.pembrokemuseum.wales Pembroke Town Hall is Pembroke’s main venue for events and is available for hire. The Tudor Room can accommodate larger events and has full kitchen facilities for catering. Smaller events e.g. coffee mornings, take place in the Foyer, while the Dilwyn Davies Room is available for smaller meetings. There is a Country Market in the foyer every Thursday morning. PEMBROKE CASTLE - A BRIEF HISTORY Pembroke Castle has a long and fascinating history, for it was around 1093 that Arnulf de Montgomery built the small inner bailey standing at the end of the promontory. Only a few years later the castle withstood a long siege by the Welsh, although its defenders were near starvation. The late 12th century keep is both an outstanding feature and architectural novelty, for it has a massive cylindrical tower with an unusual stone dome. Views from the top are tremendous and the castle’s natural defensive position on a rocky promontory overlooking Milford Haven is immediately apparent. The main room on the second floor of the Keep has two windows embellished externally by dog tooth moulding and a carved head. All the rooms are circular and the keep is nearly 80 ft high. It was the work of William Marshall, son in law of Strongbow, conqueror of Ireland and the man responsible for the wholesale reconstruction of the castle in stone in the late 12th/early 13th centuries. Another absorbing feature of the castle is the gatehouse, which had a complex barbican and no fewer than three portcullises. Pembroke is also noteworthy as the only castle in Britain to be built over a natural cavern, a large cave known as the Wogan. Historically, Pembroke is important not only for its masonry but for the fact the Harri Tudur, who became Henry VII and inaugurated the Tudor line of monarchs, was born there in 1457 reputedly in the tower now known as the Henry VII Tower. During the troubled reign of King Charles I, the castle was attacked in turn by both Royalist and by Roundheads as the sympathies of its occupants altered. In the latter stages of the struggle an attacking force was led by Cromwell himself.
