ancouver Island is renowned around the globe as an angler’s paradise. It’s a must-visit destination for the storied salmon, certainly, but also for the massive halibut, trout, spot prawns, crab and other delicacies. From solitary fresh-water fishing in secluded lakes and winding rivers or thrilling adventures on the open ocean, virtually every community offers outfitters, charters and boat rentals. In fact, whether you cast your line in Victoria to the south or Port Hardy in the north, secluded Rivers Inlet to Campbell River – the “salmon fishing capital of the world” – exceptional yearround sport fishing opportunities await. Several hatcheries and nature houses also offer a chance to learn more about the lifecycle of the salmon, while in Campbell River, there’s even the opportunity to swim with the fish. Each fall, the salmon run at Victoria’s Goldstream Park draws thousands to witness the salmon’s amazing return. Care to try your line in Island waters?
