Wedding rituals & traditions with

Ann Ricketts Your wedding ceremony can be as unique as your relationship by incorporating a unity or other ritual. Ann Ricketts loves to explore wedding rituals from around the world, rich with history and tradition, she seamlessly includes them into ceremonies for brides and grooms.

Unity Candle

Steeped in Pagan tradition, this ritual is making a comeback and has become quite popular for modern weddings. Dating back to the time of the ancient Celts, this tradition was originally performed to symbolise an engagement between a couple, which was believed to last a year and a day. The handfasting tradition in modern weddings is done in the same way by gently binding the couple's opposite hands together using several cords to symbolise strength in unity.

For the unity candle ritual, two candles are lit at the start of the ceremony then, later, the couple use tapers lit from these flames to light a wedding candle. The ritual symbolises the coming together of two souls or two families. Friends or family members can be involved by lighting the tapers or original candles.

Sand Ritual While it’s unclear where this tradition originated, the sand ritual is fast becoming a favourite for couples, adding a symbolic and visually poignant element to the wedding. The sand ritual involves the blending of different coloured sands poured by the couple into an ornamental glass jar, a beautiful keepsake for the newlyweds. Family and/or friends and/or guests can also be involved in the ritual.

Love Letter Box A wonderful ritual that can be enjoyed for years to come is the love letter box or wine box ritual. Separately, the couple write heartfelt letters to one another encapsulating how they feel, then seal the letters in a box with wine or another drink that will stand the test of time. The box is opened on an anniversary or a meaningful occasion and, while enjoying your beverage of choice, the love letters are read either together, as a couple, or separately. | 0459 739 450 | 31

Heavenly hair

A feminine, windswept chignon bun (essentially a fancy low bun) pairs perfectly with halter or bateau necklines.

Coming in all shapes and sizes, the flower-crown can be delicate petals cascading into a traditional long wedding veil or a statement-making, bold coloured wreath for an ethereal vibe.

Gorgeous loose, half-up locks will bring a romantic look to shoulder-bearing, strapless silhouettes.

Loose braids swept over the shoulder are perfect for a relaxed bohemian beach wedding. Weaving through a string of dainty flowers will turn a simple loose braid into a dreamy bridal hairstyle.

Short hair welcomes statement necklines, jewelled earrings, bold lips and beautiful headpieces.

Whether sleek and sophisticated for a dramatic look or framed with a soft braid; the updo goes with just about any dress style.

Now is the time to decide what style you are going for. Collect images of all the colours you absolutely love, book an appointment with your stylist for a complimentary consultation. I usually recommend getting a treatment and blow wave together to leave you time to hit your stylist up with all your concerns. This way you can set the perfect treatment plan that suits your budget and schedule your appointments in advance.

At this stage you should be heading towards the colour you are trying to achieve. Review your plans to make sure nothing has changed and finalise your appointments. Book eight weekly appointments and make sure your last is at least a week before the big day to allow for any tweaks that may be required.

Book in for six weekly trims and treatments to ensure your hair is at it healthiest. If you are changing from dark to blonde this can take a long time, so start the process now.

Have an intensive treatment along with your last colour service. The team at Samantha Jones Hair & Co offer a revitalising hair ritual including a hot towel service and invigorating scalp massage. This treatment will leave you and your hair feeling and looking amazing. The perfect indulgence before your big day!

Style me pretty A quick and easy guide to the essential wedding gown silhouettes.

With a waist line falling just below the bust, the empire gown elongates the body. This style of wedding gown is popular amongst brides with an apple shaped figure.

Accentuating a bride’s beautiful curves, the mermaid gown is perfect for those who aren’t afraid to flaunt it! The slim shape hugs the figure and elegantly flares at the knee.

The popular A-line dress is a chic and classic gown, widely known as one of the most flattering bridal looks. The shape cinches the waist and balances the shoulders and hips.

Make a statement down the aisle and opt for a unique and modern bridal look. Pants or jumpsuits are a gorgeous outfit choice for brides looking for a fun yet equally elegant gown alternative.

Fitting for brides with a petite frame, a sheath gown elongates the figure. Hugging the bride’s frame, it creates a flattering and sleek bridal look.

Every bride wants to feel like a princess on their special day. The princess gown provides heavenly curves and defines the waist. Perfect for brides hoping to balance their figure and create that wow-factor down the aisle.

What to consider before hiring an audio supplier When planning your wedding, audio is often something overlooked or not given enough thought. We chat to Mike Cox from Ceremony Sound and get a better understanding of what you need to discuss with your audio supplier to ensure a seamless wedding.

Let your audio supplier know if you have a celebrant or an officiant and what kind of microphone they require. Ceremony Sound have a range of microphones including handsfree sets for celebrants needing to be hands on for rituals. Be sure to let them know what is involved in the ceremony, will there be readings, speeches, vows and so on? This information gives a better understanding of how many microphones are required.

It is becoming increasingly popular to move away from convention and get married in an exotic, outdoor location. When choosing a technician it is imperative to know if they have a sound system capable of working outdoors that delivers clear audio, especially if you’re on the beach with rolling waves and wind. This is also something to consider if there will be guests who can’t access the top of a mountain or a sandy beach side but still want to hear what is happening. Ceremony Sound can organise speakers to include all guests, no matter what their vantage point.

Music By letting your technician know about your choice of music prior to your wedding, they are given a chance to familiarise themselves with the songs. Once they know how long a track goes for, they can time it with your arrival, the walk down the aisle and other poignant moments to avoid any awkward silences during the ceremony. This also gives the technician a chance to download the music to their own devices so you don’t have to worry about taking a laptop or ipod on the day. All you have to do is get married. Guest List If you have a guest list of over 200 people, your sound technician needs to know so they can bring more speakers to ensure every guest at the ceremony, including those all the way at the back, can hear the vows being exchanged, or the best man’s speech at the reception.

Instruments and Musicians Whether you’re hiring a classical string quartet, an uncle is playing a flute or the groom is busting out a guitar solo, ask your technician if they have the ability to accommodate live music and when you want them to play during your ceremony or reception. The team at Ceremony Sound have all the equipment and expertise needed to put a package together for any wedding at any location at a reasonable price. Get in touch with Ceremony Sound and find out how they can provide all your auditory needs for your big day. | 07 3325 2433 | 0417 638 155 | 40
