THE MALTESE ISLANDS CALENDAR OF EVENTS 2017

-A DESTINATION FOR ALL SEASONS-

Welcome from the Chief Executive, Malta Tourism Authority

Dear Guest, Malta is an island destination like no other. It is a holiday destination that makes you fall in love with it at first sight! Whether you want to experience some quality relaxation time or else be active in exploring places of interest, you will be pleased to know that Malta has it all. Although it is the smallest island state in the Mediterranean, Malta is also surprisingly full of entertaining, cultural and fun events all year round. There is no season during which the Maltese islands take a break. Most of the events that take place in Malta and Gozo are created by the Maltese, for the Maltese and foreigners alike. Very few of the events presented here are explicitly staged for ‘tourists’ only. This gives each event an authentic touch. Yet, because many of these events contain a strong element of highly entertaining qualities that may well be appreciated by an international crowd, these are worth noting. To cite a few examples, throughout the year, no less than 50 events that include Maltese food and wine as their main attraction are organised in various towns and villages. One may also count some 120 musical events of all genres that are staged either indoors, in theatres, or else in outdoor venues. Moreover, there are dozens of re-enactments and pageants that are presented in surroundings of historical and architectural beauty. One may experience first-hand

the street band marches, the merrymaking and the religious activities connected with feasts of patron saints which every town and village honours yearly. Most feasts present their firework displays in the evening skies for all to marvel at. And as a bonus, most of the events are free of charge. Moreover, it is possible for one to enjoy as many as three different events on any given day, because distances are short and well connected by public transport. As our guest, you may rest assured that your visit will be complemented by an event that will match one or more of your preferences. Having chosen Malta as your destination, I augur that you enjoy your stay with us and that you will return home with happy and fond memories. You just have to choose your pick from any of the events scheduled in this publication. To keep yourself updated, I invite you to click on the link below and consult our calendar of events on the official MTA website, www.visitmalta.com/en/events. We also welcome your feedback any time - before, during or after your stay. We simply want to ensure that your visit will be an enjoyable one and that you will want to repeat your experience with another trip soon. Paul Bugeja Chief Executive Malta Tourism Authority

CARNIVAL (MALTA)

1st FEBRUARY

4th FEBRUARY

24th - 28th FEBRUARY

The Best of the Gozo Youth Wind Band is the title of this year’s edition of Don Bosco Grand Concert 2017. This year’s music excerpts will feature some of the best compostions that make up the vast repertoire of the band.

In the first concert of the ‘Russian Masters’ series, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra shall present works from Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. Highly acclaimed Russian pianist Pavel Kolesnikov joins the orchestra to perform in the first work.

These are accompanied by boisterous brass bands and revellers in colourful costumes. Apart from that, many towns and villages create their own particular carnival celebrations.

GAULITANA: A FESTIVAL OF MUSIC 2017

LE NOZZE DI FIGARO (OPERA)

24th - 28th FEBRUARY

25th FEBRUARY - 2nd MARCH

28th FEBRUARY - 6th MARCH

On the island of Gozo, carnival is celebrated in various localities. Similar to Malta, carnival floats, dance competitions and a lot of frolicking by individuals dressed in costume, take place. The village of Nadur in particular, organises a night of revelry on Carnival Saturday. This has become one of the main attractions of local carnival events which is attended by thousands of youths for its bizarre and outlandish character.

Amongst so many cultural events that shall take place, one may mention, Alexander Frey, a top international versatile musician as the artist-inresidence; There shall be many concerts held at lunchtime.

A brand new production of Mozart’s comic opera. The setting of the opera is somewhere in Europe of today, but it may also be set in the future. The continent is tottering on the brink of societal collapse. Popular movements are rallying people to their cause. This production of Le Nozze di Figaro will bring to life all of the charm, humanity and wit of Mozart and da Ponte’s classic while restoring the satirical bite of Beaumarchais’ original play.

GOOD FRIDAY PROCESSION

EASTER PROCESSION

14th APRIL

16th APRIL

15th - 16th APRIL

On Maundy Thursday, churches set up the ‘Altar of Repose’ for devotees to pray at throughout the evening. During the same evening, one will be able to visit numerous exhibitions which in one way or another evoke Christ’s Last Supper. On Good Friday, 17 localities each hold a procession with a number of statues, each representing a scene from the Passion of the Christ. Two of the Good Friday processions in Għaxaq and Rabat are held on the Sunday prior to Good Friday.

Easter Sunday (known in Maltese as L-Irxoxt), is a joyous occasion. The statue of the Risen Christ is paraded triumphantly through the streets of various localities. In some towns, pall-bearers, from time to time, lower the statue from their shoulders and run with it, pedestal and all, for a stretch of some 80 metres. This is a symbolic way to manifest joy at the ‘Risen Christ’.

Flying Superkids is a troupe from Denmark that provide its audience with a high tempo show of acrobatics, gymnastics, dancing, singing, comedy, tumbling and of course twists, double and triple somersaults on trampolines and other crazy equipment.

11th MECHANISED GROUND FIREWORKS FESTIVAL

22nd - 30th APRIL

29th - 30th APRIL

29th APRIL

The Malta International Music Festival and Competition aims to create a platform for young musicians to perform and at the same time learn from acclaimed professors. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will be featured in two of the festival’s concerts. The Malta International Music Festival is presented in collaboration with the European Foundation for Support of Culture.

Two days of re-enactments and pageantry that evoke Malta’s late medieval period (1200 - 1500 AD). Several re-enactment groups perform in various battle scenes and other actions in various points of the town.

Ground fireworks are a popular Maltese pyrotechnic tradition and form part of the festive celebrations of most localities. Malta’s best pyrotechnic companies compete with one another in a spectacular competition of mechanised fireworks on the second evening of the Feast of St Publius.

MUSSORGSKY: PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION

THE VALLETTA GREEN FESTIVAL

21st MAY

18th - 20th MAY

20th - 23rd MAY

A wonderful event for the whole family, which is complemented by entertainment and food stalls offering products prepared with ricotta.

In 1873, Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky composed a musical composition about the paintings of an exhibition which was previously held by the Russian architect and painter Viktor Hartmann. The orchestral performances will bring these pictures to life. Children are especially invited to join in this magical journey of stories, pictures and sounds.

The highlight of the festival is the Infiorata, itself a colourful floral display composed of thousands of flowering plants placed next to each other in St George’s Square, Valletta. The purpose of the festival is to inspire people to make good use of urban space by creating green oases.

PUBLIC AND NATIONAL HOLIDAYS Malta enjoys 14 annual public holidays, the second most generous holiday provision in the EU, after Cyprus. These include 5 national holidays reflecting key dates in the island’s modern history, as well as 7 Christian festivals plus New Year’s Day and Workers’ Day (1st May). All government offices, schools and most businesses are closed on these days. However, most bars and restaurants open as usual, while some convenience stores open for limited shopping hours.

NATIONAL HOLIDAYS FEAST OF ST PAUL’S SHIPWRECK (10th FEBRUARY) St Paul is the patron saint of the Maltese Islands and so the feast of this saint is marked as an ‘obligatory feast’ in the liturgical calendar and a bank holiday. The feast is celebrated with great pomp in the church dedicated to the Shipwreck of St Paul in Valletta. According to the Acts of the Apostles, Chapters 27 and 28, in 60 A.D., St Paul was travelling to Rome from Jerusalem, when the vessel he was on ran aground off the coast of Malta. St Paul remained on the island for three months and according to tradition he converted the Maltese to Christianity. There are other localities on the Maltese islands where this saint is greatly revered. The feast of this saint is celebrated on other days in Rabat and Ħal Safi in Malta and Marsalforn in Gozo.

FREEDOM DAY (31st MARCH) The last of the British troops stationed on the island departed from Malta on this day in 1979, following a final run-down of the British military services. This marked a turning point in modern Maltese history when, following hundreds of years of foreign military occupation, the Maltese islands were now to follow their own destiny without the military presence of a foreign power. Activities commemorating this day are held every year in Vittoriosa where a monument marking this event was erected. In the afternoon, a hotly contested regatta takes place in the Grand Harbour featuring traditional watercraft manned by teams from cities bordering the Grand Harbour as well as another team from Birżebbuġa, a locality situated on Malta’s southern coast.

73 SETTE GIUGNO (7th JUNE) The day commemorates the victims of the 1919 riots when 4 Maltese men died in the violent unrest against the establishment. Many sectors of society were in Valletta on that day protesting against various political issues, including the high prices of commodities that made their living conditions unbearable.

IL-VITORJA (8th SEPTEMBER) This commemorates the day when in 1565 the armies of the Ottoman Empire lifted their siege on the harbour towns of Malta and their military units embarked on their vessels to return back to Istanbul. The Order of St John and the Maltese rejoiced at this lucky escape. The day is also celebrated to honour the Nativity of Our Lady which happens to be celebrated on the same day. It was believed that it was due to the intervention of the Madonna that the siege was endured by the Maltese against such a gargantuan enemy.

INDEPENDENCE DAY (21st SEPTEMBER) In 1964 Malta obtained its independence from Great Britain. The first of the British administration in Malta had commenced in September of 1800 and in 1814 Malta became a British colony. Throughout this long occupation, the island served as a very important naval base as well as a forward station for troops that were needed in case of military intervention in the Mediterranean Sea and beyond. After 1964 the Maltese Islands were immediately recognized by the United Nations as an independent state.

REPUBLIC DAY (13th DECEMBER) Having become an independent state within the Commonwealth 10 years earlier, Malta became a republic on 13th December 1974. The first President of Malta, Sir Anthony Mamo replaced the last Governor General Sir Maurice Dorman. From now on Malta started to govern by its constitutional laws according to the norms of a republican state.

74

CARNIVAL The tradition of the Maltese carnival goes back hundreds of years, with records dating back to the 15th century. The Knights of St John and the Maltese always celebrated carnival together, as this was an important event that was tied to Ash Wednesday and therefore to the religious penitential days of Lent. Carnival festivities are enjoyed in various towns and villages in Malta and Gozo. During the carnival period one can experience a lively and jovial mood where many young and not-so-young revellers wear all sorts of fanciful costumes. Many individual carnival floats are driven along the streets of Valletta and Floriana amongst a rowdy crowd. Carnival also lends itself to spontaneous merriment, allowing individuals to let their hair down, as the saying goes. Arts Council Malta organises the official carnival festivities that generally take place in Valletta from Friday until Tuesday. In Gozo carnival is celebrated in various ways, both in Rabat (Victoria) as well as in the village of Nadur. Here a more bizarre carnival fĂŞte takes place on Saturday evening that lasts until the early hours of the following day.

75

GOOD FRIDAY AND EASTER Easter is the most important feast in the Christian liturgical calendar. The series of religious and traditional manifestations of this commemoration are still very much alive in the Maltese islands. Holy Week officially begins with Palm Sunday, to commemorate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. On the evening of Maundy Thursday, the Last Supper is commemorated during Mass when twelve persons from each locality take part in the symbolic washing of the feet. After mass, churches are stripped of their silver and damask in sign of mourning and thousands of people visit seven churches to pay their respects at the Altar of Repose. The incense infused altar is beautifully decorated with white flowers and vetch plants. That same evening many also visit the displays of miniature statues representing the Passion of Christ before His crucifixion. The next day, Good Friday, is a public holiday. Late in the afternoon, at around 5.30 pm, numerous churches in Malta and Gozo hold Good Friday processions, featuring numerous life size statues carried by pall bearers and dozens of actors who dress up as biblical characters and Roman soldiers. Some participants wear hooded cloaks and tow chains around their feet as they walk in the procession. Good Friday processions are held in these towns: Birgu (St Lawrence parish church) – Senglea – Cospicua – Naxxar – Mosta – Ħal Luqa – Rabat (Fransiscan Minors Church) – Paola – Valletta (Ta’ Ġieżu Church) – Żejtun – Ħal Qormi (St George’s Parish Church) – Żebbuġ. Three processions are held on Palm Sunday, one in Ħal Għargħur, one in Ħal Għaxaq and the third one from either one of the parish churches in Victoria, Gozo. In Gozo, on Good Friday, four processions are held: one in Victoria Rabat (either one from the two parishes, that is St George Basilica or The Assumption Cathedral); the others are held in Nadur, Xagħra and Żebbuġ. In contrast to the sombre mood of Good Friday, Easter Sunday’s jubilant celebrations are punctuated by the pealing of joyful bells and fireworks. The feast is known in Maltese as Kristu Rxoxt (the Risen Christ). Following exuberant processions in the streets with the statue of the Risen Christ, families gather to enjoy a rich Easter Sunday lunch, typically of lamb, followed by traditional figolli almond pastries.

76

L-IMNARJA - FEAST OF ST PETER AND ST PAUL – (29th JUNE) Named after the Latin word luminare, meaning ‘to light up’, this is one of Malta’s oldest feasts dating back to the time of the Knights of St John, when bonfires were lit up on the city walls of Mdina during the night between 28th and 29th June. Commemorating St Peter and St Paul, the celebrations centre around the town of Rabat just outside Mdina. In the afternoon of 29th June horse races are held in the country lane, situated just below Rabat. An agricultural show takes place at Buskett Grove where traditional rabbit dishes are served amid much music and merriment. In Nadur, Gozo, the feast of St Peter and St Paul is celebrated over three days. Here the feast follows the more traditional village festa with band marches, fireworks and processions of the statue of the two saints carried at shoulder-height.

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION SANTA MARIJA (15th AUGUST) The Maltese have great reverence towards the Holy Mother. Many churches are dedicated to her under various titles, the most popular being the Assumption of Our Lady. This recalls the dogma stated by Pope Pius XII in 1950 that established the Holy Virgin as being received in Heaven as body and soul. Thus the feast became an ‘obligatory’ one in the Catholic world and is celebrated on 15th August. The feast is celebrated in nine localities in Malta and Gozo, namely: Mosta, Ħal Għaxaq, Gudja, Mqabba, Qrendi, Ħ’Attard and Rabat in Gozo. The villages of Mġarr (Malta) and ĦadDingli celebrate the same feast on the Sunday immediately following that date.

77

CHRISTMAS THE MALTESE WAY The birth of Jesus is known in Maltese as il-Milied a celebration which the Maltese look forward to with great enthusiasm. The streets of many localities are decorated with festive lights while families get creative with their own decorations in and outside their homes. On Christmas Eve, members of the Society of Catholic Doctrine lead processions of children accompanying the small statue of Baby Jesus through the streets of the town. A small brass band accompanies the procession and children sing carols such as Ninni la Tibkix Izjed (1864), (Sleep, cry no longer) and Ninu Ninu tal-Milied. (Child, Child of Christmas). That night churches are packed for Midnight Mass where a child delivers the so called Christmas sermon. Following Mass, some opt for an early ‘breakfast’ in one of the cafeterias that remain open all night. Apart from the ubiquitous Christmas trees, many families set up their own Christmas Nativity Crib at home. Some of these Nativity Scenes are rather elaborate and are even open to the public to visit. Look out for signs saying Wirja tal-Presepju (Crib Display) or even Presepju Ħaj (Live Crib) featuring reenactors in full period costume.
