Maastricht Go Local:

INTERNATIONAL, ORIGINAL, DYNAMIC, HOSPITABLE, AND AUTHENTIC Maastricht is one of the Netherlands’ most European and international cities. You can feel it, see it, and taste it. It’s a place with an authentic energy and dynamism that you won’t experience anywhere else in the Netherlands. Its mix of cultures, languages, and flavours makes the city burst with creativity, research, enterprise, and culinary delights. Discover all these things together with your friends, family, colleagues, or business contacts. For centuries now, Maastricht has been a dynamic converging point of the two most significant European cultures, the Roman and the Germanic. Southern European-style vineyards and limestone quarries such as the ENCI quarry give Maastricht a beautiful an un-Dutch landscape. The international atmosphere reigns supreme throughout the city, not just due to the many different languages spoken in the streets but also the way of life – or savoir vivre – that is so typical of Southern Europe.

MUST DO! Maastricht is a compact city. All its hotspots are a short stroll away, are easy to find, and easy to get to, even for large groups. From snow-covered slopes, hikes through hill country, and wine tasting sessions to caves. There are plenty of opportunities, in both the city and surrounding area. Maastricht’s location in the heart of Europe means it is very easy to get to - by car or train, or by plane from various international airports forming a ring around Maastricht.

INTERNATIONAL ALLURE For years, Maastricht has been labelled the ‘Gastronomic capital’ of the Netherlands. You’re in the right place for a relaxed and mouth-watering dining experience. But Maastricht is so much more than this. The arrival of the university, some 40 years ago, gave the city its international charm. Whereas you’d previously hear mainly Flemish and German being spoken around you, it’s no longer surprising to hear four or five different languages on any given day. International students, business visitors, and tourists alike add colour and an energetic mix to the city. Furthermore, the university’s various faculties are housed in magnificent historic buildings which are carefully maintained in tiptop condition and are open for viewing during the Arts & Heritage tour. You can book a Dutch or foreign student or a local to give you a guided tour of the city, looking at it through their eyes. Would you prefer a little more history? Then opt for a highlights tour, a tour of buildings which have been converted for other purposes, or an architectural walk accompanied by a local guide. They will be happy to regale you with all their tales.

FROM INDUSTRIAL CITY TO CENTRE OF EXPERTISE Not only has the university given Maastricht international allure, it has also transformed it from an industrial city to a centre of expertise. There is good reason why Maastricht is becoming increasingly popular as a conference city and attracting a greater number of business visitors. The venues that can accommodate these business gatherings are capitalizing on this trend by offering groups, large or small, a tailor-made welcome. From the official conference and exhibition centre MECC Maastricht to compact châteaux, country houses, wine cellars, and everything in between.

MAASTRICHT REGION Spend the morning in Liège, the afternoon in Aachen, and the evening in Maastricht. You can do it all in a day. Similarly, you can swap the pistes of SnowWorld for a tour of Maastricht’s underground passageways and a wine tasting session on an estate in Limburg’s hill country. That, too, is possible. And all in a single day. Not only is Maastricht a city with plenty of activities and accommodation, it is also a region offering countless possibilities. Both in the Netherlands, against the backdrop of the South Limburg hills, and in the rest of the Euregion. The possibilities are boundless.

After Amsterdam, Maastricht has the most monuments of any city in the Netherlands. Thanks to its rich history and remnants of its industrial heritage, Maastricht has plenty of unusually charming venues where you can surprise your guests. From castles and country estates to caves and old industrial buildings. As it is the city with the greatest density of Michelin-starred restaurants, where culinary delights and local artisan producers are more than amply represented, you won’t have a problem finding a great place to eat.

The cultural heritage of Maastricht goes deeper than the eye can see. Underground, still more historical treasures await. Go back in time, enter the darkness, and let your imagination wander as you listen to the stories of Maastricht Underground. Maastricht Underground is the collective name for everything there is to see and experience in Fort Sint Pieter, the caves of Maastricht and South Limburg, the Kazematten, and the ENCI quarry.

21 — Maastricht — UNDERGROUND

TripAdvisor® Traveller Review

PURE NATURE Maastricht Underground brings history to life. From the Cretaceous Sea and the Mosasaurus, to the world of ‘block breakers’ and the three musketeers. Discover what it was like to sit in an air raid shelter during the Second World War and the Cold War, and experience being a soldier in a city under siege. Or experience total darkness and utter silence in the 10,000 corridors making up the South Limburg cave network. Maastricht Underground’s experienced guides will take you and your guests on a fascinating journey, passionately recounting thrilling stories that you’ll never have heard before. These memorable tales are full of interesting facts and they may even change your view of history! What makes Maastricht Underground really special is the authentic character of the locations. There’s no high-tech equipment or effects: everything you see is authentic and natural, created over the years and remaining the same as ever. And this is what makes the past so beautiful, so real, and so tangible.

NUMBER 1 ON TRIPADVISOR Children and grown-ups, adventure-seekers, sports enthusiasts, historians, and culture lovers: Maastricht Underground has something for everyone. And don’t just take our word for it, just ask TripAdvisor! For years, TripAdvisor has heralded Maastricht Underground as the number one attraction in Maastricht, and in 2017, its famous sites (caves of St. Pietersberg hill, Fort St. Pieter and Kazematten underground tunnels) were once again awarded the TripAdvisor ‘Certificate of Excellence’.

This Certificate of Excellence is awarded to accommodation, attractions, and restaurants that consistently receive high praise from travellers on the TripAdvisor travel-review website.

IMPRESSIVE INSIDE AND OUT When you hear about Maastricht Underground, the caves and its passageways are probably what first spring to mind. However, it offers much more, not only in the way of culture but also nature. With St. Pietersberg hill as an impressive and imposing icon and the ENCI quarry a true gem, there is still a hive of activity and environmental development taking place in and around the cement factory. Here, marl quarrying will cease in its entirety in 2018 after almost 100 years. More recently, the area has been increasingly transformed into a breathtaking nature reserve. Over the years, the area has proven to be of great historical significance. Large numbers of fossils (including the Mosasaurus) have been found in the quarry that give a glimpse of life in this area millions of years ago. Find out more during a special tour, which is often given by former employees of the ENCI factory. By the end of 2015, a viewing platform and downward steps will have been completed to transport you a million years into the past with every step you take! The underground treasures in the Maastricht region entice you to take part in all kinds of activities: treasure hunts, cycling, kick-scooter tours, walks, or however else you’d like to explore this hidden world that is unique in the Netherlands. From bare to richly coloured caves, from open quarries and forts to the Kazematten tunnels beneath the city.

Who’d have thought going underground could brighten your day! We live in the Netherlands and had visitors from the UK. The weather was typically cold and miserable for the start of December and going underground was really just to have something to do. What a wonderful hour it turned out to be! Our guide, Edwin L., was just brilliant. We learned so much, saw incredible sights and experienced true darkness too! Thank you, Maastricht Underground, for filling our heads with knowledge and happy memories, and for brightening our day! Carolinki S. | 22 December

TripAdvisor® Traveller Review

It really delivered! A tour you shouldn’t miss once you visit Maastricht! It was an hour full of interesting historical facts and inside stories. I tend to get bored very easily once tour guides start getting into dates and unnecessary details that no one will remember 5 minutes later but our tour guide Willy was something else! More like hanging around with a friend that tells you the story of a place rather than a boring tour. Willy managed to captivate our attention with this direct way of narrating and his nice jokes. I am sure he has told them a million times, but it sure felt like a first time to me! He was also more than knowledgeable in his field and he was able to answer all kinds of questions regarding not only the fort but also the city itself. Totally recommend it! Olia K. | 6 February

TIP The temperature in the caves is a constant 9 to 11 degrees Celsius, so we recommend that you bring along a cardigan, jumper, or jacket.

To mark 350 years since Rembrandt’s death, 2019 has been dedicated to the master himself. Innovative and provocative, Rembrandt turned the art world turned upside down in the Dutch Golden Age. In July 2019, the Rijksmuseum will start conservation work on Rembrandt’s The Night Watch under the watchful eye of the public. But did you know that Maastricht also offers a life-sized Night Watch by artist Jules Sondeijker, hidden in the Zonneberg caves? THIRD-TIME WINNER OF ZOOVER’S ‘BEST CITY TRIP’ Maastricht still draws many domestic tourists. And for the third time in a row, Limburg’s capital received the Zoover Award for Best City Trip Netherlands with an average score of 9. Last year, Maastricht also received the Zoover Award, scoring 8.8. We’re moving on up!

HEART OF EUROPE Maastricht is one of the most European cities in the Netherlands, as you can tell by the cultures and languages you see and hear on the streets. Located in the heart of Europe, Maastricht is also known as the ‘Good Life Capital of Europe’ – and the city certainly doesn’t hide that fact! Did you also know that the Maastricht Treaty was signed here in 1992? This was the birthplace of the European Union and the Euro currency in 1992.

VLAAI NIGHTMARE FOR HIGH HEELS Maastricht’s cobblestones are a charming sight to see. And they are in perfect keeping with the city’s historical character. However, ladies wearing high heels would be wise to heed caution. You know what they say...a little pain for beauty. Or just make sure you have a dashing partner by your side.

The sweetest souvenir from the south of the Netherlands: vlaai – a type of sweet tart! In Maastricht, you can taste some at the traditional artisanal bakeries both in the city centre and in the outer districts. Try Bakkerij Hermans, Patisserie Royal, Bakkerij Souren, De Bisschopsmolen, Patisserie Lemmens, or Bread & Delicious. They are the best vlaai bakeries in Maastricht. At one you can admire the old water mill and enjoy a cup of coffee with it, while at another you can take a vlaai home for later (or for the road).

TEFAF & THE CITY When TEFAF comes to town, the whole of Maastricht seems to get into the artistic spirit. This feeling is most evident in the MECC, which hosts the exclusive and striking art fair each year. The phrase ‘art fair’ doesn’t do the event justice, as what happens at and during TEFAF can scarcely be expressed in words. It seems as if the city is enchanted by the sense of extra elegance that TEFAF exudes. Join us and experience the extensive programme in the city.

Luxurious dining in style or a more informal ambiance. A tasting session or an extensive buffet. Dining in the caves, enjoying a meal in a traditional pub, or sampling tasty treats in a former fire service canteen. The culinary aspect of your visit calls for special attention. After all, you’re in Maastricht - the gastronomic capital of the Netherlands - where you don’t have to worry about finding a great place to eat.

OLD VERSUS NEW The best thing about eating out in Maastricht is that you can mix and match to your heart’s content between authentic bistros serving traditional regional dishes and trendy, industrial-style restaurants with innovative creations on the menu. Get your morning off to a good start with breakfast at a cosy coffee bar in the trendy district of Wyck (using freshly roasted coffee beans from Blanche Dael), enjoy a lazy lunch in the former fire service canteen which has been converted into a trendy hotspot with a lunch and evening menu full of unexpected, long-forgotten, and organic products. Or you could choose a small selection of dishes from the international cuisine offered by Marres Kitchen (the homemade humus is to die for!) Or go to the Tapijnkazerne where they are happy to serve large groups. And in the evening you can visit one of the old time favourites to enjoy an extensive seafood banquet on freshly pressed linen, or a game menu with wine or asparagus as you’ll only ever find in Limburg. Alternatively, opt for a more informal setting where you can enjoy a hearty portion of ‘Sjiek’ stewed meat (at Café Sjiek, where else?), Belgian-style prawn croquettes, or a mouth-watering hamburger. And coffee just wouldn’t be the same without pralines from one of Maastricht’s chocolatiers.

YOU CAN ARGUE ABOUT TASTE You can definitely argue about matters of taste. Because when one city offers you so many flavours, you’re bound to change your mind. Want to satisfy a sweet tooth? You can do so anywhere. Every district has its own favourite spots for sweet treats. From afternoon tea, coffee with delicious carrot cake or a slice of fresh tart from the Bisschopsmolen in the Jeker quarter. To real Maastricht grenache cake at Coffeelovers in Wyck and freshly-baked pastries and cupcakes in the centre. Or do you prefer savoury? To try on the spot or to take home with you to accompany drinks? How about the sourdough and fig bread from Le Salonard, where you can also put together a cheese board for home, including a slice of Maastricht’s ‘Rommedoe’ cheese. Or you may be tempted by black pudding with apple at ‘In den Ouden Vogelstruys’ (the city’s oldest café) after a busy day shopping or the increasingly popular meatballs from Saveurs delicatessen.

We could go on and on, but we secretly hope these suggestions have already made your mouth water. We did warn you: Maastricht leaves you wanting more.
