Koli - National landscape of Finland The Koli hills are remain of the Karelids, a range of the Karelianfold mountains that were formed two billion years ago. As a tourist attraction the Koli Hills became wellknown at the turn of the 20th century. The breathtaking views that open up from the hills have also enchanted Finnish artists, including the composer Jean Sibelius. The highest peak of the Koli Hills, Ukko-Koli, rises 347 metres above sea level. The Temple of Silence (an uncovered natural shrine) is located on the Akka-Koli Hill. “Pirunkirkko” (the Devil’s Church) is a cave formation which was formerly believed to be the dwelling place of wizards and witches. It is probably one of the longest natural caves in Finland (33 m). Flashlight required. Koli National Park was founded in 1991. It encompasses an area of nearly 3,000 hectares. The Visitor Centre Ukko was completed in 2000.

CULTURAL EXCURSIONS ON LAKE PIELINEN in the footsteps of Jean Sibelius The unique cultural environment and milieu of Lake Pielinen in North Karelia, Eastern Finland, has been an inspiration for Finnish artists for over 100 years. In the 1890’s the area became a significant cultural heritage site, as many painters, writers, poets, photographers and composers sought inspiration for their art from Karelia and Kalevala, the roots of Finnish culture. Finland’s national composer, Jean Sibelius, spent his honeymoon in Lieksa in 1892, and returned to Pielinen in 1909 while visiting Koli with painter Eero Järnefelt. Sibelius described the experience in his diary: “At Koli! One of my life’s greatest experiences. Plans.” The shores of Pielinen in Lieksa were visited more than once by, for example,

Elias Lönnrot, the collector of the Finnish national epic, Kalevala. Cellist Jussi Makkonen and pianist Nazig Azezian have developed cultural excursion packages so that Finnish and foreign tourists can come to sense and experience the same atmosphere and inspiration that were felt by Jean Sibelius while visiting Pielinen. In 2015, Makkonen and Azezian hosted cultural excursions that had hundreds of participants from Finland, the United States and Japan.

In The Footsteps Of Sibelius On Lake Pielinen “Never have I felt as Finnish as in Vienna, Italy and Paris. Never have I felt as Parisian as on Lake Pielinen.” Jean Sibelius The cultural excursion In the Footsteps of Sibelius brings the visitor to Lieksa where Aino and Jean Sibelius spent their honeymoon in the summer of 1892. The journey’s another purpose for Sibelius was to seek inspiration from Kalevala and Karelia. The route taken by Sibelius via Lieksa to Viena Karelia was also once travelled by Elias Lönnrot while collecting runes for Kalevala in the early 19th century. Lieksa offers an opportunity to take a boat trip from the harbour to Monola on large rapid boats. The same route was taken by Aino and Jean Sibelius when they arrived to spend their honeymoon on the shores of Pielinen. The day culminates in the dinner concert at the restaurant of Break Sokos Hotel Koli with a grand view overlooking Lake Pielinen. Jean Sibelius wrote in his diary while visiting Koli in 1909: “At Koli. One of my life’s greatest experiences.” During the excursion, cellist Jussi Makkonen and pianist Nazig Azezian describe the background and tell compelling stories about Sibelius’ honeymoon on Pielinen. Their music video including Sibelius’ Impromptu Op. 5/5 of Sibelius’ honeymoon location was filmed on Lake Pielinen: www.youtube.com/cellistjussimakkonen. At the excursion day’s concerts, the artists perform Sibelius’ compositions that drew inspiration of nature and North Karelia.

Kalevalian Cultural Excursions North Karelia, situated in Eastern Finland, and Lake Pielinen are featured and present in many ways in the Finnish national epic, Kalevala. In his time, Elias Lönnrot travelled three times to Viena Karjala via Pielinen and Lieksa to collect Kalevalian songs. Many stories and lore on Lönnrot’s visits to Pielinen and Lieksa have been passed to our generations. The Lieksanjoki river flows to Lake Pielinen, and gets its water mostly from Russia behind the eastern border. The Lieksanjoki river has several rapids, 12 of which are situated in Russia, and 12 in Finland. Most of these rapids flow in Ruunaa, Lieksa. One of the three rapids mentioned in Kalevala is the Lieksanjoki river’s Pankakoski.

On the Kalevalian cultural excursions in Ruunaa, a Kalevalian boat trip on large rapid boats is taken to the Russian border where Väinämöinen, a legendary hero of the Finnish mythology, receives his quests, and offers them soot pot coffee. Kalevalian white water kayaking in Ruunaa is an alternative for the boat trip. The sounds of Finland’s national instrument, kantele can be heard in the cabin of the Pielinen museum, the second biggest outdoor museum in Finland. This excursion culminates with a Kaleva-inspired dinner at Bomba Karelian Village. During the excursion you will also hear Finnish rune songs from hundreds of years ago.

PROGRAM Day 1. A trip to the Russian border with a traditional wooden boat. Coffees around the campfire, where you will meet Väinämöinen, the central character of the Kalevala. Karelian wilderness lunch at Raunin Maja in Ruunaa. Kantele concert at Pielinen Museum. Kalevala-inspired dinner and concert at Bomba Karelian Village. Day 2. Breakfast in hotel. Chance to explore Bomba by yourself or with a guide.

Café-Restaurant Trapesa

Monastery Hotel

One of the monastery’s most important meeting places is Trapesa, the cosy café-restaurant with room for 260 people and a licence for serving alcoholic beverages. The name Trapesa has its origins in the Greek word for table or monastery refectory.

The peaceful Monastery Hotel offers 54 beds and 16 extra beds. The hotel has two rooms for disabled guests and two apartments. All rooms have a shower and a bathroom.

The daily meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – Buffet lunch/dinner 14 € / person (2017) are served from a home-made style buffet table. The warm options at both lunch and dinner are complimented by a salad bar, which always includes the monastery’s own sauerkraut. Many of the pastry products are produced in the monastery. In addition to the buffet meals, coffee, tea and small snacks are available throughout the day. The monastery’s doughnuts are known far and wide. In July, Trapesa’s atmosphere is complemented with the Valamo Tea Table which is laid out every evening from 6 to 9 pm. Special dinners are also available for groups on request. Vegetarian cuisine has traditionally played an important role in the monastery kitchen. However, fasting is not forced on anybody even in the monastery: fish, meat, eggs and dairy products are served throughout the year. For individual visitors and groups: minimum group size for special dinners is 10 people Languages of operation: Finnish, English & Russian
